jarhead trailer--really really good...jesus walks as soundtrack, gyllenhall was a good choice for this, more of a feeling rather then narrative.

jarhead the book, i need to read again, it convinced me towards pacisfism and ray towards war--which says something.
this is going to be a long one.
pink helmets in front of you....

new template--got sick of the green writing, i lost the links, so i will have to add that--archives on the bottom, which makes it cleaner.

anne truitt sentienal 1978

7 foot column, white on beige, with a band of blue and red on the bottom 6 inches.

blue and red being the tradtional colours for people who did sentinals, and truitt being really litearal in the connection b/w title and colour in the rest of her work...(ie cataylid is green, ocean wall is blue, picket is white, etc) so why the signifying colours so basically non essential? (i dont think i like truitt, brilliant writer, but i dont think i like her art, but then anything with dimensions so fucking large is (i mean its meant to tower over you, its size to almnost intimidate you...)

agnes martin rose 1964
acrylic, pencil, ink, canvas

its a busy one for her, which means the grid is really close and their are more colour then there usually are (four), and it hums--her work always hums, and its of course lovely, and spirtual, and the catalog entry on this work talks about her mediative holiness, and her work from the mid 60s, should be her best work (i make a point for mid90s, and the stuff done near her death--and i dont like her painted work as much as her prints and drawings--and she pretty much autmatically kicks me up to god)

the best thing about this one though, is that it reminds me so much of those super microscope close ups of clorphyll (sp) (i wonder if i am becoming bored of agnes or her critical reception) (i love her, and ive been in reveries before,,,)

met up with d, in from toronto--gave me new bag, comics, catalogs, air guitar, october, etc etc...we walked around, looked at galleries, bought comics...fun!

comics i bought
ed the happy clown--strange, surreal, freudian, obsessed with shit, and ritual humilation, i think that its some of the best work of brown, and i wish that it was more famous then the self serious HISTORICAL nonesense of louis reil, which i thot was basically a hagrogriphy done by someone who didnt understand god.

a (first name) ngui about a man giving birth to a pig, strange and transgressive, like robert munch gone all grim--good paper, well constructed, too expenisve.

Don James mosquito--BUY THIS NOW, NOT YESTERDAY, NOW. small, intense, abstract, non narrative, beautiful, well drawn, horribly noble, good if not great use of white space, beautiful, transcedently beautiful.

the cute manifesto--its werid that considering that this one was supposed to be about how drawing doesnt matter, jimmy k does his most formally innovative, emotially resonant, skilled, well crafted, drawing for drawings sake, sublime, anti cute work--and how the writing used to be so good, the best thing about the books, and now the writing is medicore, at best.

superfuckers--throw away jokes, kind of naughty, juvilenelle, but i lose myself in him drawing trees. (which was the best thing about cute--that and pansies, dandelions)

got a book out of the library about contempary art at moma, and there is some neat stuff there, including this:

not exactly this one, but one like this one, for droog, who does brilliant work anyways

so they are like this, but with a more circualr shape.

and a slew of brilliant louise borgeious drawings--which reminds me, do you know what they have done with hr giant sculptour of a spider mother, mamon:

made it a cafe canopy

saw dukes--well written, well acted, placed some obstructions, explained things that needed to be explained, good fun, some chaos--not brilliant but good fun, which most of the critics dint seem to understand.

talked to ray for about an hour which is something that i have not done in a long time,

been taking ltos of polorids lately--of:
garden house
tulip stalk and rock
pine cones and branches
condos
peeling paint
flowers
pick ups
chimeys
windows
firestone tire company sings
the brant hotel sign (red, w. a lark)
golf carts
wal mart carts (q: why are you taking a foto of that. a:b/c its beautiful)
telephone lines
road
Royal Canadian Legion, and flag
Hobo grafitti
garage
air stream
airplane weather vane
turqoise fringed umbrella
jonquils
more trees
etc

should i send todd 4k words on Brad Pasley.
go over to d's blog and look at the cloud pictures

(saw today, a purple and blue intense cloud portrait, they had this amazing colour, dusky indigoy blue, 4ft sq. and then the other a violety purple, 3x4--and they all had stirations, to indicate movement, so they were sort of comicy, but the colour was really amazing, unreproducable. the artist and the currators called them zen but the intensity of the colours, and the sheen (walnut oil varnish, a 500 yr old trick (cf stilllives from the low countries, ca 1490s) really thot of american sources--for example, warhol shadows, some of rauschenberg later collages, the ruscha's elephant/bison printpaintigns from the mid 80s, but all of thsese and none of these--almost unique)

also saw ashley, we will have lunch tomorrow i think, i miss him, lost this number and bought a bat puppet.

speaking of colour--tis harvest, and the colours are fucking popping--the canola, the skies, the wheat, the light on white, red or silver barns, flax in the fields, grass, whispering aspens, etc etc

Dear Anthony:  Thank you so much for this application. You are obviously a highly qualified candidate, and someone who it would be great to have involved in Rhizome. Unfortunately, we have filled the position at this point.  Please be in touch with me if you might be interested in writing for Rhizome in the future. All the best, Lauren

highly!

Is football playing: Along the river shore,;
With lads to chase the leather,: Now I stand up no more?

thats the hausman qoute--and there has to be a football image lost somewhere in someone archives--thats the thing with ephemeral/underground nature of material.
This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.
so i went to the library today, to get what ever was being shipped to me via ILL (small town libraries, ive read thru what i could in about 2 mos.)

and to greet me was out/lines:gay graphics before stonewall. which is basically porn--an impt, amazing, well constructed, beautiful book that compiles erotic emphermea that would have been lost otherwise--but sucking and fucking, ones, twos, threes, orgies, bdsm, rape fantasies, etc etc-from france, britian, canada, the us, germany, finland.

this is a small town--the woman who usally deals with these is amazing, incredibly cool.
1) she was asked by tim who requested it, in a way that made me sound like some kind of fag perve, and susan responded, that easton boy--which was such an arch way that it blew apart everything
2) there is a fellow librarian who is basically homophobic, and susan was tempted to allow her to process the book, which she should have done
3) she bitched about the mothers who would have had a coniption fit, and she used the word politically correct in a really withering, babbit harper valley pta kind of way.

the porn is fantastic, and as porn usually does, it indicates all sorts of politics--the standard id stuff, which i could talk about, but the best ones are by an anon. english artist. of sex in pubs, back rooms, confessionals, etc--really common places, which is neat anyways. But the absoulte best thing about them, is that all of them have these huge goofy grins, like they are having fun--you never see smiles in porn anymore--that and they all look like you or rugby players. there is something so ordinary and wonderful about the documentary aspect of it they also seem really timeless, like they could be done by anytime from chaucer onwards

i also finished my box of froot loops today. and was really looking forward to the prize, until i realised it was a pedometer--now im a 24 yr old man who should know better, but for a 6 yr old you can imagine a shittier prize. does everything have to be healthy and perscriptive.

some days i love america
so i had dinner with an lds friend, a new buddy, and i was trying to explain a few things,
a) that jesus was not a christian
b) that paul invented the category set "jesus"
c) that objective truth didnt matter
d) the idea of cauldron creation
e) the idea that it didnt matter about the book of mormon as actual history
f) the idea that asking questions about it didnt mean i was trying to debunk
g) the idea that fact and truth are different creatures

Things I have Been Thinking of Lately

1 Alex Katz is shit for people
2 Alex Katz not doing people is one of the most moving things ive encountered
3 Alex Katz doing trees is pure formal heaven,

1a

1b

(this might not be moving, i cannot explain it, but that spring kelly green of new grass is so fucking pretty, and i have seen it so few places, irl--it was one of those things i imagined as unreproducable)

(exreme close up of lake water)
1c
(im looking for my favourite katz, called Birches painted in 2002...but its good)

Salaman Rushdie calls for a consistent islamic reform. the writing is clean, clear, non polemical, and makes claims towards the autonomy of poetry. worth reading.

http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB68LI31CE.html
the world presbrytian council is refusing to support a huge number of war mongers---they have a rather large purse, so this is big.

culture jammer banksy puts graffiti on the berlin wall, good and clever images that wont really change a thing.
(nethenhayu resigned from the kessent (sp) today because of the withdrawl from gaza--the wall, and then this, one step forward and two steps back...i wonder what bush and the americans think of this, knowing that the position there is that the plo and company are terrorists/comparing w. the negoations that resulted in the withdrawl.

in defense of the moral ambiguity and musical innovation of the country charts

As Good As I Once Was, Toby Keith
rockabilly, southern rock, a bit of western swing, mainstream country. any song that advocates threesomes cannot really be considered upholding family values. toby keith workign the libertine angle.

Something More, Sugarland
girl pop, bluegrass, MOR

Mississippi Girl, Faith Hill
i have written about a ppgh on this on the country thread

Fast Cars And Freedom, Rascal Flatts
i have to think about this more, but i think the same arguements about the Flatts are covered by Gentry, they are almost gentry light.

Play Something Country, Brooks & Dunn
indicates the critically aware, self referential music that i dont think is conserative

Alcohol, Brad Paisley
the most tradtional,

Don't Worry 'Bout A Thing, SheDaisy

Do You Want Fries With That, Tim McGraw
tim is interesting, because i think that he has found his voice in a certain genre, but his politics are liberal, and he is aware of how he is using country. he is not politically conserative at all (this, drugs or jesus, red rag top)

A Real Fine Place To Start, Sara Evans
this actually rocks kind of, and has changed in her use of intstrumentation and voice, from something like suds in the bucket...and its call towards change, its call away from complaecney is something i find common in country--and a mark against the same old life of consterativism

Making Memories Of Us, Keith Urban
he is on ez rock more then he is on the country radio here, which makes him a mongrel, even if he is a bit white bred--he is also an aussie, which might mean something against the ubquity of nashville.

Help Somebody, Van Zant
Somebody's Hero, Jamie O'Neal
these two i am downloading as we speak

Something To Be Proud Of, Montgomery Gentry
the gentry has been talked about as genre shattering over and over again, by dozens of people, google them.

Redneck Yacht Club, Craig Morgan
this is the one t hat comes closest to his arguement, and one could make the same arguements that one does about brooks and dunn, but i think its too lazy even to make those. (its damn good fun though)

Arlington, Trace Adkins
actually mentioning the dead in iraq, as real people, is not something that the conserative elite in this country do (yeah its jingoistic, but it complicates the war--it isnt chely wright, remember the bush whitehouse refuses to allow people to photograph coffins)

Georgia Rain, Trisha Yearwood
this one is almost the exact same song as the new faith hill, but like faith hill's the audience is well aware of the explicit making of biography into art, i think yearwood's is the better sung and better written, but i find it less direct.

Keg In The Closet, Kenny Chesney
fantastic song, and about the sunbelt, about nostalgic, of course--but nostalgic in the way that is expected. its weird to call a song about fratboys progressive--but they put away childish things, they put away the college stuff, and go forward. it is much closer to the populist folk of jcm then it is anything like hank either.

Stay With Me (Brass Bed), Josh Gracin
(i havent listened to this one yet)

Hicktown, Jason Aldean
its a monster rock track

http://mcgtruckin.blogspot.com/2005/06/how-to-fuck-donkey-by-daddy-2005.html

step by step instructions--but unlike most fiction and most how-tos on the web, its brilliantly written, poetic, and emotionally open--the preversity becomes genuinely transgressive, and sublimated to high qauality writing.
Hey Anthony:

This review clocks in at about 350 words.  Please make it a bit longer if
you can.

Thanks.
Todd.
so i wrote this 4000 words or so on Brad Paisley's new album and neo tradtionalism, sexually, religouslly and politically, and went back to eddys email saying he might take a short side bar on how Paisley hates women--so i sat down and slowly ruthlessly cut 3600 words.

how short is short--is 420 short ?

nitsuh on an old ilx thread called bakers checkpoint his attempt at legacy--and not immediatelyt political, and its a weird thing to say about a book that was sold on being about two men in a hotel room, one of them trying to convince the other not to shoot bush.

its a hard book, and one that marks a bitter and explicit turn against the american culture of violence on both the left and right--it is shockingly pro life, in the most literal sense of the word, against murder, against abortion. it tells us we lost wwii, that our work in hiroshima and dresden was the death of civilization, but so was abortion. its not cloying, its strangely not polemical, its human--with the details of a dropped life.

i think that it was misunderstood, too firey when it was released, but baker is a (i was going to write brilliant, but hes not--hes earthy, mundane, broken, and quiet--his obv. talents are the exact opposite of brilliant: i think that he might be the best writer working today, but that might be because he has published so small and so little, nothing over 200 or so pages) (this might also be why he is less respected then he should be)

ive also read a volume of shaker hymns, which have much in common (work, zion, mother god, simplicity, alt. family structures, new jersulem, craft) with much of the other burnt over regions, and i wonder about smiths (talent/skill) as a bricolouer, and wonder if it has been written about.

and an ed ruscha, which i am going to qoute text prints from the mid 70s for a while.
romance with liquids
made with onion juice on onion paper, and it has that white on white translucent glow
various miracles
(with a milton averyesque god descending from heaven to accompony it (also catholic comics, the rays behind moroni, the halo shines from Griffith King of Kings, etc)
sloberin' drunk at the palamino
(black field white text)
three darvons and two valiums
(valley of the dolls/san fernado valley (mottled pale pale pink and white text)
i was gasping for contact
(sickly greygreen, orange hole in the center) letters on the diagonal
I Plead Insanity BEcause I'M Just Crazy About That Little Girl
(dark to light red, top to bottom, v. v. subtle newmanesque transition) (its obv. a qoute from somewhere (rockabilly/country im thinking--elvis?!?!)
sea of desire
the letters are all over the place, tipping drunkenly left or right, and look like they were cut from tinfoil. feild right to left, mango to black)
find contact lenses at the bottom of a swimming pool
i love this one, its an update almost of i once was blind but now i see, and the feild is this grainy, sunny, aqua and white, like being in a pool and seeing light almost--and its almost an impossible task anyways) (and rauschenberg collected it to!)
He Walks into a meeting hall full of workers and yells out, "O.K, What Is it You Guys Want, Pontiac Catalinas?"
marrianne moore, the poet, was asked once to write 1000 names for ford cars, the edsel i think among others--but pontiac catalina is pretty poetic--the spit of the p, the harsh t, no space left, then the k, like two kicks, a nother two hard consanats, and the feather bed of lina...is it any wonder that silliman loves ruscha?

he enjoys the co. of women (love the co. there)
they called her styerene (the colour of a tequila sunrise, title of book)
honey, i twisted through more damn traffic today
dirty baby (more tin cut outs)
i dont want/ no retro/ spective
n'dinette sets
1/2 starved/1/2 crocked/1/2 insane
a squid eating dough in a polyetheylene bag is fast and bublous...got me? (brilliant sentence)
industrial village (new font, the i in industry is covered, and the whole thing floats over a thick black sludge)
hollywood is a verb (perfect red rothko)
areosal particles suspended in haze
is it overcast, radiation fog or scud

and dozens more...

on jenny holzers lustbord. (writing on skin, steel clipped to bone bracelets, etc)

blood bone and the usualy poetic cryptic statements, thinkign mostly about the 3 main colours of ballpoint ink, and the soft yeilding sensousness of it pressing on skin.

the sentences are moving haunting koanic --and like the rest of holzers work deeply public and deeply personal (more personal then public--more intimate then billboards, as close to flesh as the t shirts)

it reminds me of a couple of personal anecdotes

i used to ahve a fetish about lovers writing on me--long complicated sentences, grocery lsits, poems, obsecenities, ink, crayon, paint, etc. i wrote a poem about it and it was rejected as bad teenage nonesense, adn it was my first rejection and i dropped the fetish (this was a time when i had people who i could actually call lovers, i havent had one of those in years)

also it reminds me of the things i write on my hands, call numbers for library books, addresses, phone numbers--immediate things to retrive before the next washing, that arent really worth the scurrying arround for a notebook.

the peice also reminded me of how close tru crime and porn where(article in this weeks ew--about how the bush crackdown on sexuality has resulted in a blossoming of hard core rape and sexual sadism as entertainment on television...chilling qoute from the article:"since the american broadcasting system has more restrictions against sexuality , you can get away with amplyfying sexuality, it resuklts in this weird sadistic element. putting women in these sexual situtations is a back door way of getting more flesh in" (cf sin city and their portyral of whores)

holzer did this peice in the mid90s:here are two qoutes from it

"I want to fukc her where she has too much hair"(blue ink on the palm of a man with hair creeping towards the text)
"Her gore is in a ball of cleaning rags. i carry out the dumping left from my mother. ive turned to hide her jewellery. (women long arm, red ink)

Poetry is no use whatever. The whole notion of usefulness is irrelevant to what are called the fine arts, as it is to many other things, perhaps to most of the things that really matter. We who call ourselves "The West," now that we've stopped calling ourselves Christians, are so imbued with the zeal for usefulness that was left us by Jeremy Benthem that we find it difficult to escape from utilitarianism into a real world.
Basil Bunting

one about friedlander at the (whitney?)
two things you need to know about this one
1) 500 images in the show/842 images in the catalog--is his inability to edit a photo similar to his inability to edit a show, is this huge size a sort of overwhelming cataloging bullying?
2)'I only wanted Uncle Vern standing by his new car (a Hudson) on a clear day. I got him and the car. I also got a bit of Aunt Mary's laundry, and Beau Jack, the dog, peeing on a fence, and a row of potted tuberous begonias on the porch and 78 trees and a million pebbles in the driveway and more. It's a generous medium, photography (friedlander himself)
that visual noise is most likely his power, and i need to spend more t ime w. him.

this one on the new lds cinema--not napeloan dynamite (which im ignoring, though i should see b/c of the usual reasons) or lebute, but mormon film for mormons that is making real money and is spilling into the protestant underground.
in a theory course last year i made the arguement that the last subversive culture left in america is a xian one, this furthers that belief.
i havent seen any of the films made by the directors mentioned, but i have seen the one from 1917 and its hott. ray and i should sit down and watch this.

rob pruitt--he did carpet that had the panda motiff as well.

big part of the essay, want to include the picture for future reference (tim gardner)

its walton ford

one of d's favourites--not mentioned in the essay, but have been thinking about it for a long time.

usually hate longo, but the sea and graphite changes my mind

he does drawing centered perfomances, john meese.

i like the strange decadent minialism of late lewitt, the kind that looks like carnival flags and crazy quilts. esp. effective in this german musuem

fred sandback, four strings and the world changes (how do you buy these--have they been at auction of late?)

ruth root, a poppier, less ceberal sean scully.

gallery in new york does these plates, like franklin mint for the hipster set.
