out the dangers of Foucault’s gender blindness in his insistence that
sexuality and power are coextensive: “But to deny gender, first of all, is to
deny the social relations of gender that constitute and validate the sexual
oppression of women; and second, to deny gender is to remain in
‘ideology’—an ideology which is manifestly self-serving to the male-
gendered subject” (de Lauretis 1987.15)
