arguing about art w. ryan again, i had a thot--i can read line and colour abstractly, i know what it is doing, and what it is intended to do, but i cannot read texture.there is a show at the fab gallery, i will go see--but much of it will be the new new painting stuff, that i think i would like better if it was self aware about it own luridness, if it was parodic or if there was less going on. i just think its aggressive in its material usage, so aggressive that it becomes isolating. graham peacock is like john wayne w/o the honour. (tho other work i find in similar viens, early german baroque (esp bavarian carving), spanish rococo, italian late mannerists, french academic sculpture from the 19th century, my interest has gone from hicamp adoration to thots on craft, to a sideward devotion, and i dont think that has happened with the abstractionists (well the gestural ones at least) and i wonder if extra-texutal work is preventing me from reading it.

was offered both drugs and sex at the york hotel today, then walked to a couple of book stores, filled with reading material for 25 yr olds. the average age of GP is 27. but an art gallery, a decent library, book stores, a perfect smokeshop/newsstand, gay porn at least 4 places, and the whole pick up truck/fag thing--i could imagine it as home.

thirty six small notes about grand prarie, beaverlodge, etc.
1) on the road up, somewhere north of glory hills, a fully operaitonal dairy farm is across the highway from 6 fake neo-california tuscan houses.
2) most of the gas stations up here, have fireworks for sale.
3) hiway sign: Live Alpaca
Ideal Livestock
4) kountry seems the perfered spelling everwhgere.
5) near onoway, a giant mural on the side of an atv dealership features swimming elk.
6) a storm almost started b/w onoway and fox creek, and we saw 6 horses, mares and foals, i was told, racing towards more comfortable houses, in something resembling terror.
7) on the road b/w fox creek and valleyview, on a small two lane divided, 12 logging trucks, racing the opposite direction.
8) have to piss an hour from edmonton, i say i have the bladder of a:
chelsea completes: a little girl
sheri completes: an old lady.
9) most of the farms have a kind of ersatz industralism, with qaunset huts and shipping containers being used as outbuildings, and industrial equipment being used as another way to make cash.
10) b/w black soil and almost new spring grass, white lines, claicum or lime deposiots?
11) one field looks purple, a trick of these depoists, and something else.
12) the soil type of broeal forrests is paticher, then the less think aspen prarie parkland.
13) three creeks in a row, near the reserve up here:
goose. woodpecker, chickadee
14) the government when giving land to first nations people, after treaty eight, would often put nations who had tradtional rviarlies in the same place, causing civil war, stories about one such place nearer to johns, called moose lake. discussion of crees as colonialists of truly native people in northern alberta, because they came with the fur traders from out east. (ontario)
15) great town names: gunn, bonazson, glory hills, valleyview,
16) at johns, the first nite: field wander, half watch americas got talent, shoot much, including photos that are as pastoral as anything ive shot
17) told stories of the americans using the local saskatoon hill (why cell phones and the net works out here) as a dewbase, and how that stripped important archelogical sites, only recently did they stop painting white the ovoid base, and i am not sure let it decay or tore it down.
18) i start asking questions about the land, and the ainmals on it, and john moves into teaching mode,. telling me stories unbidden about the local history of cats, cattle, chickens, peacocks, guinea hens. i dont have my notebook in the field, so i dont rember most of them.
19) im pretty good at calming and directing cattle. the first night i must have walked half a male, chasing a read and white piebald calf, his mother on the correct side of the fence, me trying to convince the calf to join the cow.
20) things i heard, that i wouldnt have in the city: bullfrogs, crickets, coyotes, the hum of the electric fence, meadowlarks. the coyotes howl, bark, and gruff up almost like the sounds of domestic animals. i learn that animal sounds are much more gutteral, and untranslateable, when i convince another cow to follow its injured calf. chelsea chases it, and i bellow in response to her calls. so it isnt moo, more like MEEAaaoMoMeh all from the gut
21) amusingly the goat sounds are closer to boing boing. i lead a nanny on a binder twine leash, and pick up a kid to move it, the kid nuzzles me, pretty close to my tits. i wonder if im going to lactate in symptahy.
22) other baby animals, a donkey (all ears and tail), a litter of kittens two weeks old, moved to the barn, sometimes in the barn, a tom kills kittens, to return a (female) cat into estrus. so he can breed again.
23) johns tour of the barnyard feature repairs and projects that needed to be done, narratives of ownership, and history, (he has had the house in the family for three generations?), often his storys are small moral tales of reclaiming what other people thru away as useless or not worth saving. thrift is a xian virture here.
24) im in the house yesterday, and oilmen/landmen come in and negoite for landrights. everyone is on edge, they view the presence of machines to be problematic to the animals, it will fuck up the ground water, the noise will be difficult, and the machines are ugly. no real choice in allowing them as the government has the mineral rights, and any attempts at arbitrating will be decided by a board owned by the oil companies. listening to half understood conversations, both plain talk and code, imn genuinely angry, and when asking sheri about it later, the anger is palatable.
25) follow john twice a day, except for today to complete water and feeding, try to do as much work as possible, so that i am not leeching off of limited resources.
26) i just finished o haras biography city poet, and when he talks about art historical surveys, the people upstairs talked about land surveys.
27) stop in grand prarie, peavy mart, to buy bull castators. rubber rings as tight as a rats assdhole, in bright green, that are pushed apart by pliers to castarate new bull calfs. i buy a bag for rachel.
28) the black and white markings on african guinea hens, look like masai body paint or decoration on dogon houses.
29) old craft is hidden in the broken sheds here (ferriers, hand crafted corners, wagons)
30) the one thing i didnt shoot, that i asked and didnt receive permission to shoot, was a dead calf. a twin, he was lost, and though found alive, died soon after. it will be burried in the manure pile to rot, and the message here seems to be muck to muck. john was visibly upset, he comforts calfs who were in pain, and ignored being pissed on when he carried a injured calf thru the fields.
31) kneeling next to a calf, holding it down, sometimes its legs open, when tagging and castrating, you can see the terror on the faces. i am wondering how i can eat meat sometimes, then i realise tis a sentimental, bullshit city boy reaction to an ancient process, one that has been humanized. john often comforts the calves after this procedure.
32) the photos of me doing work are for the sake of proving that i have done work, i feel a bit stalinist for this.
33) a conversation about xian sexual ethics in the car with johns mom was kind of more then awkard.
34) the food all tastes amazing. and is largely from 10 miles, reminding me of the recent local/slow food movement. i am hoping to take back canning.
35) took photos of the brethern church, a mennoite sect that has some difficult positions related to gender, and whos church front qoutes jonah.
36) the farm house reminds me of gramma conrads, esp the smell.
37) one of the cows last night had mastosis, an infection of the udders and milkchannels (really word please), john millked her for more then an hour, then gave her needles, was kicked in the kenee by the process.
38) he can tell almost every grass in the field here, and you can tell its a dry season by the large amounts of craked dirt, the field looked at in small places tells larger patterns.
39) im at home, because john and melvin are working on moving another farmers cattle, a cousin of johns, so i would be in the way.
40) i feel useful, the work is immediate, and the consquences are dire if the work is left undone. no profundity there, but impt.

From the top:
Eli Roth two page spread, from Guts, a book of nuhorror visual effects. i find the image really fascianting, because i find roth fascinating (in his personae and his unresolved, id ridden films) this image is fascinating because i am unsure if he is making fun or revelling in his gender construction, rachel points out the femme pose, and the cock is too big to be "real", the hyperreal phallic presentation is a mark of camp, burelesque, etc and his films seem as well to be burlesques of american foreign policy.
speaking of gender, where do i get one of those masks.
lohan and millano knife play, i always knew those two were kinky (i wonder what nick says)
no one told me that eames made the chairs in poodle pink. i want one

reading the studio savant blog, amy fungs work, going to two or three openings in the last two weeks, and being on the queer arts festival committee, i have realised that only is edmonton boring, its still really provinical, w. v. few exceptions, i just dont care what happens in this town. (& having ashley spend so much time angsting out about it, just drives me nuts)
saw greg hollingshead at blair's opening, and he introduced me as a writer, which made me feel like a dilletante. but we talked about kit smart, and how maybe his poetry was reprinted in the 60s and 70s because of artuard, and the anti pysch movement, etc, and the idea that the crazy can be visioanry seems out of date now, so we dont spend muhc time with it.
blairs show of drawings, a whole room of them, the term drawing used as loosely as humanly possible, are godly, filthy, smart, lingusitic, visually sophisticated, heart breaking, familal, and familair (in the witches cat, and the subconcious and the best friend sense). i am really glad he is keeping working, and the gutpunch, worddrunk glossalia doesnt really disappear, its present in the branding as much as its in this polysemic glorius mess. (show at snap, till mid july, go now)
arts hab opening too, saw peter (last name) photos, of pwa in africa, that had an honesty and regalness, which was nice, and the usual suspects, which i should have taken notes on, but i didnt.
elaine, who was going to be in the banff thing, just ignores me, and i am pretty sure she hates me, but i am unsure why. (amy from prarie artster kind of knowingly giggled when my name was mentioned last week, as well, and there in general is a difficulty finding new patterns when people remember yr fuck ups from high school onward, like seeing ross moroz drunk and sloppy at the black dog, saying you dont ever change, and thats what i love about you, and thinking, well i have changed, and yr an asshole, and quit digging and poking when yr sober, and hugging when yr drunk, its bullshit)
the work is going well though, and i think that i will spend time concentrating on non edmonton work, because i feel happier when i get foreign/toronto stuff then when i get edmonton stuff. (i over analyse edmonton stuff, when heather says passionite at the committee meetings, what does that mean, why do i feel so much tension with adam, do i really want to spend 6 mos with todd, is tedd genuinely that nice or is he playing being kind to the retard games, etc etc)
joe said v. nice things about me on his blog, which i appreciate, immensely. (which continues my jesus folks calming, queer/arts folks head expoldey)
has this burnt enough bridges, yet?

flickr set from a brazillian designer, plastics and cute anthropolgical labels, from the 1860s to the present.
disneyland pictures, from the earliest days.
Two Cher Videos from the mid 70s.
fentons fotos themselves arent that great, but how he works narratives by placing the images in diptychs are really fantastic formally.
the new surgeon general thinks gays and lesbians can be cured
weird intersection between amauter scholarship, musuem studies, old school capitalism, and selling catalogs, at the met.
rave of the new hirst show at the white cube in the guardian
mass grave from the nazi era, found in the ukraine.
stnd koons story, they can write these fuckers by template now, which only seems proper, the only new bit is this:
"there is a column of old-fashioned punchcards, with which the Koons employees clock on and off."
which charms me
soth writes about tim davis work as being not slick, and not digital, tanglible, though shooting paitnings to show the cracks, etc seems more slick then other digitial work, showing the flaws in painting using photographs seems a heirachal grab, mostly about perservation...and how painting falls apart, the aesthetics of decay, etc (basically then an art historical burtynsky)
i thot i was the only one who liked the london 2012 logo, which most people think is ugly, but i think is fun and dynamic. speak up agrees with me.
virtue the first spirtual perfume from the bible.
beth hollaway twitty and john ramsay are dating. fame begets fame, and they both have kiddie killign to discuss
great article on the history of sexualization of child stars.
a communitarian xian community in philly, that seems to be v. much connected to the 60s Jesus People work, with its commitment to social justice.
a lovely story of rape, humilitation, a group of people watching over, and fratboys. just sickens one.
images forthcoming.

photobucket pulled one of my images, i asked why, they said because they banned nudity. here is my email dialouge with them:
photobucket
okay, which service can i use that treats me like an adult?
ase
Dear Anthony Easton,
I would advice you first read the Terms of Service of any site you are
considering joining.
Doing so will inform you of what you are and are not to upload.
Sincerely,
Your Photobucket Support Team
Dear Photobucket
I would suggest that you stop censoring people who are engaging in legitimate discourse because of some puritan fear of sex. I would also suggest stop sending passive aggressive notes to people.

Dear Anthony Easton,
The Terms of Service is there for you to review. Nudity isn't allowed.
Continue to post it and your account will be banned and you will lose your
images. This is our final response to this issue.
Sincerely,
Your Photobucket Support Team
Photobucket:
Any nudity? Classical statues, Renniassnace Paintings, Icons from the Igbo nations, Corpus Christis, Marylin Monroe in Playboy? Cause that makes me sad, like that wouldnt be an acceptable guideline in Art History 101. Cancelling an account because of some clever nudity will get laughed at, it's bad PR to say the least...
Cheers

Cause that makes me sad, like that wouldnt be an acceptable guideline in Art History 101. Cancelling an account because of some clever nudity will get laughed at, it's bad PR to say the least...

Submitted a photo to PhotoSho Magazine, and this was the little blurb i wrote about it:
I took this photo, at the Farm Fair International in Edmonton, on the way to the Rodeo. I went with my friend John, who raises these creatures, and I was suprised at how glam it was. The cows would cost as much as a new car at times, and they each had a brand name, so it was looking at living, breathing, genetically perfect mercedes. I didnt want to think of it as exotic but in this large out building where I had seen punk shows, and carnivals, these giant photos of beautiful heifers had something new and exciting. I am interested in my photos, in documenting he intersections between people, categories, and constructions of identity. I think this one really talks abuot the aesthetics of image making and how it differs in rural and urban contexts.
D from Tx spruced it up.

In the Atlantic Monthly this month, there is an article on Condi Rice, that talks about her belief in neo-con foreign policy, and how it is called theology in the white house, i find it fascinating that her belief in jesus ahs moved to a progressive historicism, in some pretty classic transference. Lehman talks about a similar ideology conversion, with Hilary Clintons moving from Methodism to something else. Its a book review but the polticial discussion is really bright and needling.

Crows are black birds and blackbirds are also, but a crow in the snow is so much the more so. If you're pro-crow you proclaim his intellect, his resourcefulness, and the visual poetry of his somber silhouette on the calligraphy of the cornfield. But if it's your cornfield, you have good caws to compose creative crowfanities when he arrives. Think of it as sharecropping: he gets the grasshoppers, you get the corn, and the few ears missed in the harvest are held in, well--escrow.

Some Thoughts on the Aesthetics of Dead Babies
Yesterday, 2 am or so, and two friends of mine both artists, were gathered around the computer, watching kitsch videos on you tube. A perfect postmodern evening of fan created entertainment. Rosie and Elizabeth destroying each other, Martha Stewart consuming Lindsay Lohan like Grendel redone by Donna Karan, that Atlanta woman who likes to talk about her vagina, the bitch please queen, etc. I thought I was moving from camp atrocity to camp atrocity, so I moved in for the killer, one of two videos made for John Michael Cameron’s Alyssa Lies.
These videos, features images culled of childhood abuse, from crim. manuals, records of abuse, illustrations, just a general grasp and insert job made easier by google image search. Like God’s Will by Martina McBride or that Tim McGraw story about angels protecting orphaned children, I find Cameron’s song really funny. There is a magnificent and obvious heart pulling that is so lurid that it comes kitsch. The death of Alyssa, even the abuse of Alyssa does not remind me of how awful innocent children are, but of how much I don’t really like kids and how sentiment can be used to sell records. I am reminded of how people would gather on the docks of New York, begging for any news about Little Nell, and how still in England Wilde cut through Dickens moralizing with: “One must have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without laughing.” Like in the Victorian populist fiction that it sprung from, kids die with an alarming regularity in country music. I keep thinking about songs about he deaths of children in the last 20 years are continuing a tradition that lost its usefulness. Like those pretty blonde kids that show up dead every few months on the cover of the tabloids, that are written about with an almost religious devotion.
The thing is, in the Victorian era, kids actually died, often before infancy. They did so in certain regions where country music was popular well into the second half of the 20th century. We can make fun of musicians who wrote and performed about death with such goopy melodrama, or we can give them a pass, because the songs are sad. They move us. I keep thinking about Dolly, because she manages the severity of the dead kid genre with the slick production of pop. She manages to make her songs, well legitimately earnest. This should be reason for some kind of camp reclaiming, and there has been an attempt or two. Like the punk band the Goblins, whose EP Songs of Child Abuse and Mortality made Famous by Dolly Patron anthologizes and recasts the best of them, as examples of populist theater that should be mocked: "Down From Dover," "I Get Lonesome By Myself," "Bloody Bones," "Malana," "Jeannie's Afraid Of The Dark," "Me And Little Andy," "The Party," "Letter To Heaven.” Listening to the EP, I keep being reminded of the Sex Pistols remake of My Way. The sneer was a fuck you to the fat corpse of Frank Sinatra and his weepy self-reliance, but it were also a reclaiming, a punk colonizing of rotary lunches and martinis at 5.
The songs they covered were the most mawkish. They had child singsong choruses, ghosts, the uncanny, elements of folk legends, but also of the countrypolitian sound, of Nashville and television, it does something else. The Goblins do the most damage to Down From Dover, with its plain speaking; quotidian details and childe ballad narrative form were interrupted with hesitancies, quietness, lacunae and discussions of weather. Alyssa Lies has some similarities, but it is told in third instead of first, it names the child victim, and the details of the death are left unspoken. Dolly tells every detail of every death in those songs, she sings like she has had people die in front of her, and like she grew up with it. Reading Eric Wesibands essay on the song from Gruel Marcus’ book on balladry: …”a list of folk songs the siblings absorbed growing up…Barbry Allen, Eastbound Train, The Letter Edged in Black, Two Little Babes, Little Bessie, Letter to Heaven and Little Son Hugh”. He goes on to talk about how Little Man Hugh was a storysong about gypsies or Jews coming to kidnap and kill a child. It becomes the myth of explaining the unfairness of God by scapegoating the other.
I think, that the dead child stories that are sung in traditional ballads, are used to explain death. Those fan videos of the child abuse pictures and stats, could be considered in the same tradition, except the mystery comes through with Dolly, the death becomes an example of the cruelty of everyday life. There is no thought that by singing the song, Dolly would prevent anything from happening. There is an idea in Alyssa dies so others don’t have to. She becomes this weird redemptive force, like how the suffering of Will in Gods Will provides a way to cohere and save a usual heterosexual family. I think this might be why I am moved, though I recognize the instinct of the Goblins, when listening to Dolly, and sometimes I find the death of children hysterical, I think the more hard-handed the approach, the more I find it more ripe for that postmodern youtube rib kicking.
A couple of side notes:
I wonder if the kitsch that surrounds the anti abortion movement in the states: the tiny fetuses, the lapel pins of baby feet, performances like Lil' Markie (the creepy kid singing the lines “why did you kill me mommy”, a perennial favourite of the hyper aware, hyper ironic WFMU), are a way of attaching that Victorian sentiment to a political energy. I also wonder if one of the reasons why we have fewer mothers and less children dying is the expediency and safety of abortion. I wonder if the recent spate of Children’s trauma songs is about that.
If you want to see a really good example of spaces and lacunae in song that is used to talk about grief, McGraw’s Red Rag Top is fairly close to the methodology used by Dolly.
I wonder if this personal as well. My mother lost several children, and cannot listen to songs or read books that deal with violence towards Children. I find my instinct to mock songs about Divorce, even at the glurgy height (i.e. Dottie Smiths “Mommy, Can I still Call him Daddy”) much lessened, most likely because I am a child of a single mother.

# john and i wrote out an agreement for the apartment, from may 1st to august 1st
# i am paying john
# we notified the land lord about this verbally, ca May 24th
# i have been paying rent to john, directly
# it is a two bedroom basement suite, the other room is empty, but the cheques are still being offered.
# my share of the rent is 465.
# i got a phone call at around 1:00 pm on June 2.
# the landlord informed me he had advertised the suite for rent, that my lease was not valid, that if i wanted to rent the place, i would have to find first and last by the 30th of June, that he was raising my rent to 500 dollars a month, that he did not need to inform of any of this in writing, and that people would be coming to see the apartment in the next three weeks, but not when and who will be here, and what my obligations to those people are.
# i am unsure of my status as a renter.
# i owe t he landlord 24 dollars for two months of improved cable, and yet to pay Junes Rent, but John and I have arranged a time for that payment to be made.
# the suite is in abysmal condition, with insects found, celling tiles absent, mould in the bathroom, problems with the bathtub cladding, windows leaking, smoke alarms not connected, and other problems.
