In the Atlantic Monthly this month, there is an article on Condi Rice, that talks about her belief in neo-con foreign policy, and how it is called theology in the white house, i find it fascinating that her belief in jesus ahs moved to a progressive historicism, in some pretty classic transference. Lehman talks about a similar ideology conversion, with Hilary Clintons moving from Methodism to something else. Its a book review but the polticial discussion is really bright and needling.

i think i have mentioend charley harper before, the design maven, but the great thing about his v. modernist, v. hand crafted work frmo the 50s and 60s, is that ti often found its way into scientific journals, esp work by biolgists, including posters of insect diveristy, pond life, and images for t he cornell world birds orithonology project. the link is to an interview and images, including a v. charming serigraph of a crow in fields (its also good to see cheerful crows in ordinary endevours, it must be exhausting for them to be all portents of doom and death and myhtologies.)

Crows are black birds and blackbirds are also, but a crow in the snow is so much the more so. If you're pro-crow you proclaim his intellect, his resourcefulness, and the visual poetry of his somber silhouette on the calligraphy of the cornfield. But if it's your cornfield, you have good caws to compose creative crowfanities when he arrives. Think of it as sharecropping: he gets the grasshoppers, you get the corn, and the few ears missed in the harvest are held in, well--escrow.
