101 photos of spirit photography from the 19th century, there is a narrative to be written, that talks about how photography from its beginning, has been used not to tell the docmunetary truth, but to create narratives of belief, of myth and falsehood, to extend the stories told by drawing and painting, this would be the first chapter. (note that these double exposures were intended against the tendenices of versmillitude---that the idea of photographs as narrative constructions was well printed from the 19th century onward, and the idea now that with the rise of digital photographs make us suspsicious of image creation is obviously false (cf stalinist disappearences, the crimean photographs, matthew brady moving bodies, the recent iranian bomb images, hand painted colour prints, and the conan scandal around fairy photos)(also, note this, and the victorian love of mortuary photography, including photos of dead babies)

Alexie: We're not the appropriate kind of stories. If you write about Lakota Indians or horse cultures, you have a better chance of a bestseller. If you write about pre-twentieth century Indians; if you use a "corn pollen, four directions, Mother Earth, Father Sky" sort of language; or if you write about the wonderful relationship between an Indian and a white person: love affair, friendship, mentoring relationship, you have a better chance of selling a lot of books.

If you are of -- now I'm not saying these people aren't Indian -- if you are of a very mixed-blood, you have a better chance of selling a lot of books. It's a particular kind of Indian experience. They have more access to the educational and publishing channels. If you write the appropriate kind of material, you have a better chance. The second you don't, your chances decrease.

I'm very fortunate. I'm writing these highly political books about reservation Indians. I'm telling rez jokes in my books. I think most non-Indians don't have a clue about half the jokes in there. I'm selling a lot of copies and doing well. I'm an anomaly.

Other writers are writing stories that aren't getting told and not because of their writing ability. Ninety percent of the books in any bookstore are not written very well. It's the approach. Any non-Indian writer writing about Indians is going to automatically get a better critical and commercial reception than any Indian. Tony Hillerman, for instance, any one of his novels, has sold more copies than all the books written by Indians, ever.

Do you resent the fact that he writes about Indians?

Alexie: Yes. I resent that he's made a career off Indians, and as far as I know, has not given much back. I'm on the Board of Trustees of the American Indian College Fund -- I haven't heard his name mentioned. I'm resentful that there are many writers out there making careers off Indians and doing absolutely nothing in return. There's a guy I'm reading with tomorrow evening -- Mr. Kinsella -- who's making a career writing books about Indians, and as far as I know -- he's doing nothing for Indians. People ask me and I give hard-core answers. You're making money, give it back. Donate 10% of your royalties to the Native College Fund. How about giving 10% of your royalties to the tribe you're writing about?

joyce cambells horticultural daugertypes continue the recent attempts to remake the form, the composition, and how they suggest rotting, makes them less historically obsessed and more formally inclined then most.

splendid pleasent a folk art gallery in sheffield mass has lovely things for sale.

i love how brittle and grotesque these stan bitter's pots and cermaics are, all slab work, with minimal decoration, they have a brutality, and an anti funcitonal qaulity, that is sort of fuck you, but not on the scale of the larger of the steel sculptours. he apparently wrote a really impt book called enviromental cermaics, and also designed all of the work for the nut tree resturants, the modernist design haven in southern california, so hes not all raw. He also did these two great monliths, in 1969:

beautiful and well controlled website for a show at st thomas university, about type and national identity, mostly in europe, mostly in the first half of the 20th century, though the discussions of hebrew and welsh, updating basically ancient languages for current ideological usage was fascinating.

Like Louise


Louise Lawler, with her perfectly constructed combinations of money and taste, with an acid wit, is a woman after my own heart. How she creates artifacts that are the results of casual relations, capital, devotion to the temple of aesthetics, and an intellectual rigor. Her work combines the best of documentary and meta-analysis into a tight and explicit ball of ice. The work is so careful, though—so well printed, so aestheticised, so heavily formalized, that they are almost inaccessible.

Like Louise is a set of photos, taken quick and dirty, that mucks up the sterile glassiness of Lawler’s surfaces. Unlike her large prints, that occur in high end museums and galleries, the photos are small (4x7 or 8x11) , and not only taken in prominent galleries, but in private houses, museums of national or international reputation, on the street, and in hotels. They are of original works, reproductions of European masterpieces, photographs of reproductions, and even photographs of photographs of photographs.

Some of them are meant as art historical notes, or to point out previously unseen details, or notes for future writing, or as tourist souvenirs, as comments on work it self, and as a meta critical attachment to the Lawler, and as a discussion of the differences between the old school film and the new school digital proliferation.

the canadian parliemnt buildings are ugly, badly placed, blackened, hulking masses that are dull and slavering to the british, completley full of grimcracks and googaws, the canadian supreme court buidling is elegant and gorgeous.

1)my truck book carefully repackaged and archived, for someone who has spent so much time on the ephermeal, having something last forever, was humbling, and made me feel v modest, a general feeling i get when i am treated as a professional.

4) the joyce weiland text peice : man has reached out and touched the tranquil moon, puffy letters, crafting, a wry nationalism, and a charming looseness.
5) that algonquin and assoniboe work were included along with the thomsons, v. little of that work, and the work was put into a side gallery, which are problems, but the beading and felt work were impresive
6) W Blair Bruce's Les Naied, 1896 dozens of fat and happy naked women frolic in a white foam, with a rainbow overhead, sometimes the foam is so thick that only hints of flesh emerge, it looks so bright and so lively, a pornographic joie d vie that i thot was invented in california 50 years after the painting was done
7) louis reil's hand beaded coat, from moose leather, in amongst the other first nations stuff, in an almost random assortment, at the musuem of civ, it almost brought me to tears, and for someone who was so mystical, it should have been in a reliqury.
8) a cranach nude, where all that covers her is a diaphonous draping, and two thick gold chains, matched with the one i saw in berkley last year, where the woman was wearing nothing but a giant fur stole, that started with her genitals and moved past both shoulders, cranach's celebration of the erotic, and the sly critiques of previous painters, who kept trying to convince us that a white sheet over the important bits kept both the subjects and the viewers deceny in check--cranach's nudes remind me of titans venus and the olympia, in how they look straight at us, that the models know why they are there.
9) a big, juicy noland, in its own room. with varriations of yellow (ochre, butter); pink (hot, fuschia), purple (lavendar, mauve) and blue (cornflower powder), in alternating stripes, to suggest a logical conclusion
10) agnes 1985 white rose, not a peroid i like from her, but it combined the brassy instinct of the other work in the 80s, with the slight, humming/wavering of the work earlier. most likely (and i will have to research this) a transition peice.
11) Guston, Room, 1970, which struck me as castratey
12) Hans Building Greins Death, The Maiden and The Serpent, where death is portayed as a man whose flesh is peeling.
13)Niagra Region Covlets, hand weaved and vegetable dyed from 1825-1870
14 A big Glenn Gould Show, including original scores, collections of his petula clark records, two of his pianos, a lot of new media work, and videos at the musuem of civ--the videos of him in studio, kvethcing and joking with engineers, sort of reminded me of Stritch at the Sondhiem reheaserls for Company, with the same me against the world collectively, and they sort of blew away the thesis of crank/lone genius that haunts him, there were also some minor discussions, hints and accusations of his queerness, but nothing explicit, which was a little disappointing.
15) Holy Spirit, 1900, Carving of the Dove for a Gateinua Quebec Church, looks vaguely Brazillian and Vaguley like a pigeon, but i love polychrome abstractions like that.
16) hand beaded work by anon lakota, northern plains, cree, slavey, sioux, blackfoot, mohawk, and ivey crafts people, not enough space to see them individually, and an amazing assinobie war horse mask, in an all over zig zag pattern of grass green and pearl white beads, which was not shown two d, sadly.

20) a couple of half way decent cezanne works, including a v. late mt st victorie that was all gash and slash

22) a poussin landscape that was inscrutable as ever
23) fuseli dream of belinda, that had all of his creatures climb out from under and over and on top of the drame, including a nightmarish little homonclous literally hiding under the bed.
