much of the narrative of the finical collapse in recent months has been this idea of people buying things that they cannot afford, and the moralist attachment of self worth to capital--what has been hidden, and what is quickly coming to light, is much of the foreclosure mess is dark magic and fraud.

Twombly's letters of resignation are a poetic realization that all language will eventually fall into entropy--the entropy of the written form an inability to communicate, the worn off printing press, the erasure, the black mark, the word forgotten or never known, it is a rueful and elegiac formalist discourse on that which can never be fully or properly had. His use of both industrial paint and domestic materials (graphite, coloured pencils) also suggests a pre fall, pre lingustic state that he postions near a neo-classicism (& not the hygenic neo-classicism of mies/co) and a babbling of buerocatic interests. Done really early, they also work as impt transiton peices b/w the abexers and the more conceptual language workers. on now at Zwiner and Worth, 12 of the 38 are online. 25 is my favourite. reading drummer magazine at the leather archiveas this year, i was impressed by a lot of thigns, its grpahic design, the caliber of the writing, the amusing awarensess of strangeness, the devotion to a radical queer aesthetic and how sexual practice and aesthetic practice were often olne, it was well written, horribly filthy, a great time, and a vital political document. Merkel something is only a failure if you actually try it and find it does not work--the guestworker program is nto a failure of multiculturalism, it is a success of the parochial and racist attiude that europe has to racialised others (cf Algerians in France, Carribeans and Indians in England, Somalis and SEnegalse in Holland) This is not their problem in not intergrating, it is yr problem in refusing to acknowledge their personhood.

four culture things that are haunting me of late:
a) sarah kane's blasted--pat and i left the theater, thinking to ourselves, well that was a formal excercise in shoving as much offensiveness as possible into 90 minutes--and that was part of it, but it was also a formal discussion of compactness, and the difficulties of describing the horror of our everyday life, of making violence less rhetorical and more emobodied--imagine john webster and harold pinter rewriting no exit.
b) el antusi's peak mountain set at rom. first thing--why this show isn't at the ago, and the ethnographic history of that is a problem, but this one peice, a group of mountains constructed out of the gold lids of peak canned milk, has everything. it is beautiful, and it is redemptive, and it is easy enough for a five yr old to say shiny (& one did), but it is also about how ghana was once an empire of gold, and ghana was the place where gold was made from slaves--the push and pull of commerce, acculmated into carefully constructed piles of detrius, has an intensity that rises and falls, like an undertow, never breaking the surface.
c) david hutton at mocca, the room is black, and there is a set of diaramas, of common places, exquisite, slightly gimmicky, but at the end of the show, i was genuinely afraid of the dark.
d) pae white's two peices, one of smoke, which i wrote of before on this blog, but which also has a connection between digital media and new history. there is also a v. funny, v. big, one on one translation of a 1970s macrame and green yarn peice that was printed onto a white field, complete wtih auction tags. whites work is exactly about what it means to translate the empeheral into the tangible, but the addition of digital complicaitons made it much more complicated and kind of ravishing.

Matching Text and Tune
Praise to God, Immortal Praise (VU 521) sung to Forty Days and Forty Nights. (VU 114)
The French folk melody used for Hymn 521, in Voices United, was originally used as a part of a satricial cycle of songs for advent. This tune, specifically, was intended as a song that was intended to greet the donkey that delivered the Christ child. This transference of something that was intended to mock sentimentality, into something explicitly sentimental is a problem. 1 One of the ways of solving the problem is to move the tune away from its history and into something more discreet. The Martin Herbst' tune that is used with the hymn Forty Days and Forty Nights has a sensuality, and a sophistication, that is musically rich enough to simultaneously under-gird notions of bounty, and notions of love, without moving the tune into historical traps.
O God of all the Many Lands (VU 523) sung to Kingsfold.
Kingsfold is thought to be an archetypal English tune, though ironically it is the exact tune as the Irish folk tune Stars of the Country Town, which suggests that borders might be more pliable then we like to think of. It would be a bit of an inside joke, but for a hymn about the failures of national borders, it is one that fits. There are also less insidery reasons to make this switch. Kingsfold is a rousing anthem , whose energy matches the wonder and awe of the natural world found in the lyrics. As well, t here is a modesty, and an ease to singing that provides a useful correction to some of the other options triumphalism.

Derrida...who sees, interestingly, for the present purpose, a much more probleamtic reationship between speech and writing than that proposed by the anthropologists idea of writing as n insufficent and super imposed substuite for natural speech. Derridas skepticism, which places both speech and writing in the the position of insufficency, where the signs are not just different from one other (as in Saussure) but lead to endlessly deferred meanings, is in strong controst to Rosseua's romanticism, with its belief in the supoerity of the natural. In the writing/singing of hymns, however, Derrida's idea of 'the unstable realtionship between couples such as speech/writing is one which correpssonds to the protean adapbility and changeability of a hymn text...

"Colm Tóibín reminded me of a favourite joke (LRB, 19 August). Terence Cardinal Cooke of New York convened his bishops and ordered that in accordance with new austerity measures all clergy at Mass would henceforth be required to limit their number of attending altar boys to one and also to wear simple black robes rather than the usual colourful garb. All agreed. Mass the following Sunday began with a parade of obedient clergy: one boy per bishop, all black. But when Terence Cardinal Cooke entered the church, he was preceded and followed by no fewer than eight handsome boys and was dressed, head to toe, in beautiful robes of purple, red and gold. After he took his seat, the bishop seated in the row behind him leaned forward and whispered in his ear: ‘Terence, you bitch.’

I am against Hadopi [the French internet-copyright law, or its attendant agency], of course. There is no such thing as intellectual property. I'm against the inheritance [of works], for example. An artist's children could benefit from the copyright of their parents' works, say, until they reach the age of majority... But afterward, it's not clear to me why Ravel's children should get any income from Bolero...

The movie does this less then the books (Esp. w. the charachter of Envy), and the film is much more streamlined, and deals with knives and envy worse, but the point is sill present. It also just boils down to this: authenticity is gossip. Courtney wasn’t authentic because she did this or slept with him. But gossip fades away. No one cares about old arguments. When they aren’t being nostalgic, what people care about in old songs is hooks and emotion. Listen to “Olympia” again, and that’s all you’ll hear: hooks and emotion.

a) he uses old fashioned words, homosexual, hermphradite, as opposed to the new ones, even the old new ones.
b) he started the class wiht his bonofides, wiht being in berkley from the 70s, and mentioning friends dying of aids and the sexual revoutlion's problems with women. one of his readings, hays did the same thing.
then we spent most of the rest of the class talking about the bible, old follows new, and epistles following gospels, a solid list of themes on the board.

With one steamy reference to the homosexual underworld, any writer transformed his or her novel, no matter how conventional its shape, into something outré and avant-garde. But with liberation, the subject was effectively normalized. So began the age of the traditionally plotted, realistic, worldly gay novel in which likeable gay characters dealt likeably with traditional everyday traumas.

I went to Saint Johns School of Alberta for two years, grades 7 and 8. This year I have been thinking about the school this year because it shut down, because I have become Anglican, because I am ready to handle what it gave me. All of this is personal, the trauma and the ruptures that happened in that school were the expected ones, and those traumas are personal. I could tell you them, and you would not be surprised.
The personal is political, and the church is responsible for its history. I thought about these ideas when making this work. I thought about other things too: I thought about how grace can be transferred, about how to make the heft of guilt and mourning tangible, about corporate responsibility. I thought about the ephemera of religiosity, how we carry ceremonies in breviaries and prayerbooks or how we carry our temporal history. I thought about Felix Gonzales-Torres, who expressed his mourning, his uniquely catholic mourning, in rituals of transference. He would create posters to carry away, or piles of candy the exact weight of the combined bodies of his weight, and his lovers body.
The project I have proposed has three parts. There will be three piles of posters, smaller then Torres' work (11x17 or so) recreated through analog sources, scanned and made digital in order to be disseminated.
One of the posters will have two images from a homme d'nor ceremony. Cribbed from Canadian history, remade to be vaguely Christian, it was what happened when we went half way through the year's final canoe trip. Stripped to our waist, we said prayers, were beaten with pine or spruce branches. Afterwards in a parody of the Eucharist, we would have a shot of rum. The photos here are photos that have a specific time and place, with the bright orange time stamp, but are repeated, historically—they become a simulacrum of an event that might or might not have never happened.
One of the posters will be a enlargement of a information card from the Alberta Report, a paleo-conservative, and very pious magazine founded in Saint Johns and which later determined Western Canadian religious politics for a decade. This is part of the public response to Saint Johns—what the school wanted to be thought of, and what it was thought of.
The last poster is a photograph I took, the only photograph I took, when the show was shut down, a year ago. I brought a friend, and we wandered around the deserted campus, in early spring. The snow is melting—formally connecting the water in the Homme D'Nor photos, with the melted snow, and extending the metaphor of temporariness.
Though this is my history—the continued issues of trauma, masculinity, the construction of identity, the use of history to construct narratives of cohesion, the textual interventions that mark Christian lives, and what it means to make and keep pictures. I think that because this is about Anglican history, and much of my practice is about vernacular and unusual placements I think that it would deepen and complicate the matrice of meaning that are inherent in the work, if it is present in an ecclesiastical context.
