scene by scene visual comparasions of the movie and the comic sin city--which actually makes me a bit nervous--as film is an interpertive medium and requires a different sort of context then the source material, but w. the connections b/w image and words comix are the closeset to film, and rodifuez has a brilliant visceral visual sense.
icp is giving larry clarke a mid career r etrospective, and i cannot help but think though he makes amazzing, complicated, taboo shattering and erotically resonant fotos, he has led to the boring, isnt in naughty, explotive and arrogant fotos of people like richardson...and he is really quite dishonest and manipulitive.

(placing him w/i a context there is a thot related to gednis and clarke--in that i see in the fotos of gednis normal things being done--fixing a car for one--in the fotos of larry clarke i find abnormal things desperatly normalized.
(placing him in another context--is there a difference between phil mcgraw saying all these 14 year olds have sex, they call it hooking up, there are braclets even and larry clarke directing the virgin sturgeon, there is a biographical and moralist explotation--and law and order svu/katie couric/etc all say the same thing.)

so i am sitting at rutherford reading about how to end jerking off w. the power of jesus, and this farm boy hottness comes and sits across from me, and i look up, then read, and suddenly realize the ontolgolical power of my hard on.

ruscha on photography, really dry, almost dull--with just a history of various foto books, etc--but really worth reading, because even droll catalog essays by ruscha are really great.
sontags on the suffering of others, sontags small and tight last book on the politics of viewing, i think i disagree with her, but its so hard, when it is filled with a brilliant compactness. the examples are dazzling, one after the otherm piling up until we collpase under the weight of arguments. shes too tradtional though.
first book of y the last man, which i found strangely conserative--the people who talk about the patricahy all become dangerous amazons (literally--w. one breast and everything.) who violently oppose women now that they cannot oppose men. there is also a retrenching of a gender essentalism, with bilogical women surrving, and men disappearing--there is the assumption that there are only two category sets--its a fanastic book aesthtically and politically, well written and well panelled, worth picking up the second volume, but i was disappoitned.

four pages of stephen shore fotos here; martin doesnt like him---and i think my love for it is so fucking visceral, that i have trouble explaing why--i mean part of it is v. formal, the one on the first page with the two paddles on a ping pong table, and that sheer concentration of colour--or the font of the payway that pops from the beige of winnipeg, almost pink--or the odd sticky slickness of resturant meals.
there is the isolation of sky, and buildings--the old cliche of presence and absence--centered around people (there is a foto journal that had a call for submissions that centered arond portraits w/o people--and that was what i felt there.)
there is the last picture show/john ford momunetalism of the pictures of regina/palmdale/gull lake (the gull lake shot really connects w, me and chris and i were trying to figure out the word, its not isolation of course, and its not opression, but its this everpresent landscape, that never changes and is constant--like the mag fields line--"i treated you like radio/i treated you like god--i could and maybe will write a 1000 words on this one foto) /charelston.
there is redeeming of the post card tourist shot (esp in the amazing shot of miami, the palm trees, etc) and snapshots of people we kind of now(ginger siepel) by the brick wall in miami, and the meals in hotels, and the fish in kenora ontario (the fish in kenora, is the most ideally touristy, and how it centeres the fish, how it makes the flowers obv,the trees banal, the background water(?) blankness (what does that word mean, why do i use that word so much, why is that word so omnipresent in my crit--what does it mean in the case of shore) and the shaker simple courthouse of piano--even yankee fields.

also a foto proposal for work featuring ray, which martin thot was rather ordinary and rather pretentious—but does quote leslie fielder, the shangri las, etc. I did notes for it a while back, and i was hoping to show it to Rachel wrt her sort of offer to make an artists book that art metropole might take on commission (also thinking a collection of fotos of letters, and a collection of flowers, common and ugly flowers)
watched alfie—and it had this really isolating, silent, difficult and complicated (emotionally raw) abortion scene—its an adult movie in the oldest sense of the word, with drinking and fucking, but also with the consequences that occur in relationships, the abortion the most obv.---but broken hearts and broken children, an d hangovers---it’s a dark movie, w. a false glibness, it reminded me for all the world of eyes wide shut—shot gorgeously, but the emotions were literally broadcast via billboards—im still digesting it--they didnt use the word abortion either.
(got sky captain and young adam too—i love my emac, i can watch dvds and have 6 windows open and t he speakers play music, someone email me on how to work slsk, that would be super awesome.)
jeff bowes & i had an hour conversation about mom, about putting her in a home, about my anger for the church, about aj, about everything lately—he has a stoic no nonsense frankness, and it was helpful---talked to mom afterwards and i think that might actually happen, the list---but its like me not asking for help until the most absoulate limit.
he also gave me a priesthood blessing, put my hands on my head, said the right words, a weird combo of the pseudo olde/kjv english of the BoM, and the beurcratic effiency of modern health care. w. some sort of company man dow chemical thing split---it was useful, though—any port in a storm, no consercreated oil, and there was some drama with one of the families, so i had to leave the room for a while.
worried about too much time w. drew, too much gravitas. must work on that.

so it made me really happy that , who heads the company won it, and that a collective won--the pritzker is one of the more adventourus prizes, and tends to use its power to push or prod architechture in a certain direction--like hadid last year (archidose is usually pretty good about this, but his accusation that hadid win smells of pc rankles--i wrote his about it:

This is bullshit--it wasn't because zaha hadid was a woman--if anything it was a discussion of an artchitechts promience over the client, and the lack of adventorous clients. It was an attempt to make the theoritiical and conceptual ideas of architechture as impt as the actual buildings. It also let her build things--and consdering how brilliant she is, how well the buildings work practically, asethetically and intellecutally--it was a brave and proper choice.its disiengious to assume it was because of race and gender. )

I think postmodernity is really part of the reconfiguration of the idea of
unity across the planet ... meaning a greater homogeneity. Postmodernism has

dave thomsons big book on hollywood--i wish i ahd taken notes on this, but it is a weird overly literal anaysis of scandal (it wasnt because clarke ahted fags that he quit gone with the wind, it was that he wasnt big enough to cary it) , good on the history of fiances (sometimes too good--there are a dozen charts of box office, return , etc) a little too much of a love in for the hollywood system (but makes the arguement that movies were better when directors were in charge as opposed to actors--which actually is too auterish for me to feel comfortable; maybe the arguement could be made that when movies were created by groups of people they were better then when they were created by one ego--be it speilberg or kidman--he uses kidman, kidman is the wrong example, because she makes both well--roberts would be better.) i think this is bullshit, but im not sure why---because the movies i tend to like dont have a strong autuer energy (sirk maybe the exception)

4 more books--which makes it 29. 2.9 a week....need to pick up the pace.
double targets---atwoods book of nonfiction, compulsviey readable, tenedr and kind in the right places (to marian engel, mavis gallant,carol sheilds--can lit as convent); w/o the bitchyness that invades those places) wickedly funny, bone stupid on sci fi (absurdist taxanomic somersaults mostly); wise on the nature of place and lit (including a really thorough gutting of wordsworth's view of nature)
a collection of 20th century potraits--mostly english actually, with a really bizzare basquit drawing near the back, mostly useless except it reminded me of format for 100/100 and it had a good couple of qoutes.
nick hornby song book--he is really good in places (its about the songs and labums that made his life---and its anecdotal power is strong (what he says about his son with autism, esp.) and he actually tries a critical revival of rod stewart--but its mostly too sentimental.
and a strange, fractured, unfettered alberto manguel, the master anthologist and critic--who recorded his reading for a year--tangetial, chatty, deep, funny and sexy---and it has the best lists ive read in a long time (of dectivtive fiction, of what he finds beautiful in argentina, it was like best of blog writing (nb: blog precedents:letter collections, epherma, broadsheets, diaries, common place books, horn books, pillow books, samplers)--i have some long notes on teh book---one of the best ive read so far this year:

penguin released 20 great idea books, in cheap, accesable and well designed formats--2 women, no people of colour, i picked up freud--civialastion and its discontents, b/c i hadnt read it and the uncles (jaques/michel) were born from it.
they had a contest, that asked in a 100 wds or less, which of the ones changed the world the most, this was my entry:
Freud, because he ended Descartes...made us consider our brains, cocks, hearts--made us reconside how we tell stories, how we interact with those we love, those we hate and those we see on the subway.
They gave us more hard theory, more hard science, more poetry and more popular culture--it was Moses (w/o meloncholia) splitting the rock of the victorian desert--he flooded us.
(that flood--to extend the metaphor ad absurdum--was the woman in orgasm, was the woman at menses, was the mucus plug of the birth of the 20th century, and the breast milk to continue us through the weaning. It was the piss, and the shit and they glory of the end of Lawerence's Anglo watery spunk.
