dozens of behind hte scenes photos from twin peaks, including a hand full of lynch in a tux, that remind me of beckmans self portrait, in their borgie confidence, their unusal erotic magneticism, and how sinisterly common he seems.
the pacific soultion, which forces immigrants to australia to be cast aways on islands like narus for months or years, before they may or may not be repatriated, has been ended.
280 hand coloured, early printed alchemial and mystic drawings from the 15th to the 18th century--one of those attemtpts at the sacred that are genuinely beautiful, but also queer--not only the images of hermpahridites and sexual oddities, bu the insitinct towards change, towards transforming the self, and the refusal of biological. i find them inspirational, heretically so. i also like how they try to taxonomize the universe, trying to make a scientific system out of the nature of g-d, isnt arrogant as much as it is genuinely curious--and its combonition of real language, created language, visual elements, and code, the moving back and forth b/w layers of meaning... (unfortunately, it is just thumbnails) (also the colours, the emerald greens, the golds, pinks, variations of blue frmo indigo to krsna skin.)
Two translations of Bunyan's Pilgrim Progress into intuckitut exsit, one from a Moravian preacher ca 1901, and by an anglican ca 1956--you can see the traces of future cape dorset pritns, in the illustrations and how the illustrators construct ideas like "celestial city" to a still largely nomadic people, who have no pyschic memory of 16th century london. On that thot--qouting from the site:
Unlike the earlier 1901 translation, which borrowed generic “European” illustrations from other missionary translations, Flint’s version was supplied with original illustrations in which Bunyan’s characters appear in furs and sun goggles - all except Christian, who dons medieval armour at the point of his conversion.
this seems obvious to say, but it is a poignant example that to christianise first nations people was to westernise them, the idea that the immideately finding god is to find western culture, but also that you will be alien from yr culture, and inapproite for the culture--the people who illustrated must have known that, and there is a slyness to the pages in 1956, where Christian is standingi n his medevial armour and the inuk are still in the furs.
brian rose's photographs of the berlin walls remeants, throughout germany, are examples of culutral memory, and a symbol of the continued divide between the east and the west.
Bridget Riley, Red with Red 1, 2007, Oil on Linen, 67 x 89 3/4 inches, Shown at Basel this year (lovely, impt work)
kurt kauper is a great techincal painter--thats the first thing, i keep saying about people like John Currin, that we have forgotten what painting could be and so people like Currin are thot of as brilliant formalists (ie any salon painter from the 1870s, or whoever we comission to do leg portraits are better painters then Currin, places like the RCA were shoving them out) We dont need good techincal painting anymore, unless it services an idea. Kauper is a great techincal painter, and like Kauper he is a breeder who talks about what it means to be a man, but Kauper with his previous series of cary grant, and this collection of hockey painters espeically bobby orr, is slowly pulling apart both male desire and a culture of celebritiy worship, about how a boy becomes a man. It is not only the epic scale (though there are images here that are 9 feet long), but the care that it takes to make the images--they are filled with love, a love that i find inscrutable, but they are not designed for me--growing up in boston, where the whole city makes a saint of this man, and the man know living as a recluse, the drawings and paintings of them work as a kind of epic history of sports bars, arenas, locker rooms, places where secrets are told and where the smells, tastes, etc are often a cant that goes unspoken--that they make some hockey fans angry, suggests that loyalty has been breeched. (esp look at the almost french, almost neo-classical red chalk drawings, the neo-classicism of those drawings, reminds me of the neo-classicism of places like the forum or maple leaf gardens) this boston story's image slide show actually cuts off any penises
Hickory Cluster a Virginia suburb from 1961, is one of the best examples, of the optimism of modernism.
dozen photos of a 1933-1935 Aalto house, that is so tiny, human scaled, lovely, with great wood details, and amazing built ins. (note the bookshelves and his sinks--even his sinks are beautiful) more context here

One of the standard-issue tactics in Victorian religious warfare was to accuse every religion--other than yours, of course--of endangering the nuclear family. Protestants accused Catholics, Catholics accused Protestants, both of them accused the Jews, and everybody accused the Mormons. (It's a wonder the nuclear family has survived, really.) famous photographer mentoring a workshop in Tuscany: Does anyone have some photos they'd like to discuss?
Me: I have a few.
Famous photographer: Let's take a look...
Me: I think this one is my favorite from the trip so far.
Famous photographer: I see. What is it?
Me: It's the side of a van I spotted in Orvieto.
Famous photographer: It's...interesting. Do you have anything else?
Me: Well I like this one a lot too. It is a sign on the side of the road that was near the abandoned building everyone else was photographing. I was pretty pleased that I got the tip of the arrow to exactly touch the edge of the frame.
Famous photographer: Yes, it is quite symmetric. Did you shoot any of the abandoned building?
Me: No. But I got a good one of the side of our bus! Hold on, let me find it...
via JPG magazine, Grant Hamilton is the guy who does those amazing abstract polaroids.
Reading the Globe and Mail obit of Mosseua, it was mentioned in passing that he had the only solo show from an aborignal artist in 127 years--here are 10 living artists they should consider:
Brian Jungen, Dunne-Za(esp since the majestic, post minimal Vienna, from 2003 is in their national collection)
Annie Pootoogook, Inuk (esp since the CBC thot she was worth while of an hour doc)
Terrence Houle, Blood (esp since his work is so vitally interdisciplinary)
Jane Ash Poitras, Cree, (RCA)
Alex Janvier Dene Suline and Saulteaux (esp how he has twisted adn changed, and esp his responses to modernist tendencies, and he is a member of the order of canada, plus the retrospective in calgary could easily be expanded)
Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, Haida
Zacahry Long Boy, Dene (work already in the national gallery collection)
Peter B Jones, Iroquis
Joane Cardinal Schubert (mostly her installation art)
Ron Noganosh, Ojibway(national tour, 2002, didnt stop at the BGA)
i dont know how i feel about john zollers work from american colouring book--the military ones are kind of hot though, and i like how he makes something concise, and clear with kindergarden material, including glitter
Watchtower Illustration, Undated (I have a thing for Warrior Bears)
interesting review of future sapphic sailor classic Szymaszek’s emptying the boats
kennedy press makes gorgeous, multiple pullings, of letter press prints, lots of colours, almost chaotic, but never out of control. esp the afrocentric ones, and the ones from african slogans, that combine western practices and african aesthetics

i think this nyt article on the collusion of private galleries and public musuems, esp wrt Blum and Poe's connection to the recent LAMoCA's Murakami show, but who doesnt know that the art world is a circle jerk that uses T-Bills for lube.
via Riot Clit Shave, unknown event and photog, obv. some kind of pentecostal event at a hotel ballroom in middle america, which i find moving and holy. (the ability to lay prostrate and find god everywhere)
Dan Hillier does Victorian Kitsch Redone, which would be cliches, but they often feature tentecales, and who doesnt love cephlapods.
Josh Homme's desert rockers' plan to perform a six-song show for in-patients at an unnamed Los Angeles drying out clinic came to an abrupt and chaotic end when the band were cut off before the end of the first song and manhandled out of the building by heavy security, NME.COM has learned.
The rehab show was intended as a light-hearted, intimate performance in their home city of Los Angeles .
But a spokesman for the band informed NME.COM that when the band opened the show with classic 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer', staff at the clinic were so unimpressed that they pulled the plugs and had security remove them straight away without negotiation.
The song's lyrics famously run: "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol... c-c-c-c-c-cocaine".

Prints and Multiples, SOthebys, London:
Still a way to get among the best work for cheap (including a great tuymans hotel scene for 600 and a Yuskavage for the same)
Six Sean Scully Aquatints for 12, 500, i think aquatints work really well for him, because they encourage a depth and luminoisity in colour
The dozen or so murakimi's that go for under a grand, would better be handled by ebay, i think
Emin never really left her student phase, did she
Are photos proper here--photos are almost always multiple, and multpiple suggests a deliberate strategy of dissemantion
Paranoia man in cheap shit room by Cecily Brown, suggests that she might have a career in single panel gag strips
same warhols, a soup can, a mao, the lincoln center ticket, etc nothing really strong\
2000 and 2002 Rileys, for 1000 or so, are the strongest and loveliest in her career, she keeps getting stronger--and the pinks, the teals, the salmons, all would be insipid, with out a balls out belief in patterning and abstraction
Asher John is making the cash
i wish hockney did more lithos
some of hodgkins indian views look like albers (his print work is under rated, its less gestural then his painting work, like he understands that it is impossible to make a spontenuas gesture in the heavily modulated mechinchal processes of litho or aqua tinting) hodgkin also might be one of the last english for the english painters possible
christo wrapped horse, is just funny
lots of random shit that was pulled out to pad an already medicore auction, work for a couple of hundred pounds bought in
also the usual late neo classical picassos, some medicore miro works, two roulat clowns, etc
there are a handful of lovely renoir prints that look like drawings
a dozen whistlers!
for rouge makeovers from holts--so i went out on a limb, perfect circles of bright pink blush, lips the colour of dried blood, pasty white face, perfectly plucked kohl darkened eye brows and eyes that combined the best of liz taylor playing cleopatra, priscilla on her wedding day, joel grey in cabaret and hibuscus queen of the mid 70s sf underground--ted even said i looked like liza (w. beard) and it all lasted thru eating, thru kissing and thru dancing
the problem with weariing kohl and two colours of liner to yr ear, three kinds of shadow, including the upper lid, up to the eyebrow, the eye brow itself, and the lower lid, and glitter, is that it takes forever and ever to take off.
but i LOOKED FABULOUS (silk slip in royal purple, with black lace, and froot of the loom y fronts)
white face done via foundation, powder, more foundation, and then white eye shadow presed hard into the flesh

i was dancing last night, with boys, and girls, with myself, and listening to the horns, and seeing that fabric banner, about how we should welcome the grace of god, and thinking about the sally ann bands, and also, how the band leader quoted Wesley, and also how context, the visible context of the every day, of being in a church, regardless of the pyschogeographic ghosts of that specific church, and how that was holy as well...
the rest of the night was amazing, but the bands and the dancing, i felt the spirit of the holy Booths, of the holy ghost, and maybe this is the mystic bullshit jesus freak that occasionally pops up in me, like an inconveienent hard on in the middle of math class, but yeah, the queerness and the holiness merged into bodies, crashed smashed banged and collided into bodies.

Artist Statement for Time Raiser: These 6 images, based on Jacques Lacan's pyschoanalytical concept of the mirror stage, continue my ideas of photography as a tool that allows for intervention of personhood in found spaces. Lacan has written "the mirror stage is a phenomenon to which I assign a twofold value. In the first place, it has historical value as it marks a decisive turning-point in the mental development of the child. In the second place, it typifies an essential libidinal relationship with the body image" In these images, I work through the idea, that not only is the mirror stage unlimited to childhood but it is an ever renewing presence. Every time a subject moves past a mirror, he or she uncovers themselves, as beings who are part of a community, and as corporeal beings. As someone who rarely works through their body, and who lives in a culture that distorts ideas of both libido and flesh, I find that this project extends and literalises the metaphor, that documents the explicit moving through the invisible and visible patterns of cities.
