After the exams finished, we were given free time. the exams were difficult, and high pressure, in the cafeteria, often 5 or 6 hour days, with huge amount of information that had to be recited back. the english exam we had to parse sentences, compose poetry adn two essays, write short, medium and long answers, do multiple choice, and true and false, it was overwhelming. i was sure that i failed and went outside to the most beautiful day, late may, snow melted, sun shining, and had this book in my back pocket--one of the great ones, designed with pop covers, again in bright blue. i read it behind the dorms, sitting on a strip of raised concrete, and later in the woods, on the lower quater, in the choir loft of the church, near the cows, we must have had 6 hours free, and it was one of my most pleasent moments about sjsa, the anarchic merry pranksters letting me escape.

i watched the harvey milk doc from 1984, and i love milk, but i keep wondering was he really a matyr because of his homosexuality, dan white, a lonley, overworked, broke, and mentally ill man, rashly resigned, and then tried to be rehired, milk and the mayor prevented that rehiring. after prison, an attempt to reintroduce himself into society resulted in killing himself, in the family station wagon, while an irish ballad first preformed by danny doyle in 1970 played.

But to think of it in context of the other four, it has a preciscion that the four horsemen purposely lack, which is part of it, but the two rings, one for a man and one for a woman, seems to work as a hetero-normative challenge to the queer discourses that were starting to emerge around pop. it makes me wonder how much Lstein's delibrate and carefully precise works were meant to be against the smears and slathers of the others painterly work? (ie John's False Start Lithos, Rberg's Brace from 1962) (though two of warhol's most mechanically precise works: Small Torn Campbell's Soup Can (Pepper Pot) was amde in 1962) (you could make the arguement about the pepper pot painting, is that it in how it strips the label off of teh can, it becomes a parody of warhol's other work, it is using the prececsion of craft as a sly meta-joke, but even that joke was v. tite) (also, the brillo and the del monte boxes were made in 63, were tehy influenced by this?

1) that she is posing with a camera, but not taking a shot, suggests the totemic power of fame the camera provided was as important as the creation of images.
2) that they are snapshots, indicates a casualness that Riefensthal never had
3) that she is posing as a hausfrau, and in the jagger photo looking up at him, underlies the rhetoric, or at least semiotics of denazifacation.
4) the images are really about how good she was at controlling her own image, of the power of her own fame, of everyone loving her as a master--just as the images of the nuba were claimed by her and her estate as her best work, to retain the facist obsession with bodies while denying it's genocidal racism.
5) the last one, is a masterpeice of tetuonic kitsch. (the seperation of kitsch nudes and art nudes, in the post nazi world, mostly centered around reifensthal, the work she did was art, the work others did continued to be kitsch, and dangerous at that--greenberg's essay avant garde adn kitsch, and i think greenbergs obsession with abstraction came from the worry about what bodies meant in germany)

The Untitled Image Folder project consists of every image that I right clicked and saved, for the year of 2007, excepting pornography, divided by colour. Each colour moves forward in a digital slide show shown on a digital picture frame , and then begins again, as a constant loop.

Living in a culture of constant image creation and dissemination, means that the creation of taxonomies becomes ad-hoc and immediate. To be part of a digital world, with the Internet resting more and more on photos and other images, means that trading visual information becomes part of a social life and a sorting of identities (esp. in terms of social networking sites like Flickr or Facebook or the creation of blogs)

Even without the social aspect, most people who surf have a folder on their desk of miscellaneous images, stuff they found visually arresting, or funny, or erotic or the like. I wanted to figure out how to formalize and by formalizing, domesticate this instinct. By dividing the work into colours, it is to concentrate on batches of images, to make a formal and processed narrative out of the accidental daily creation of surfing and blogging.

Also because colour is in our culture often thought of as only decorative or cosmetic, allow for the images to flow with little viewer intervention. By placing it on a dresser, and by using a digital picture frame, an internet full of mavericks become branded and placed in a paddock. The picture frame, once intended for pictures of family and friends, now contain images unsourced, untitled, but firmly as part of a quotidian process.

That process is also vital, to push an entire years of consumption, into a presentation that lasts a little over an hour, indicates a future where information is becoming more and more condensed. That it contains my images, means that identity can be constructed, that the patterns of my looking, of my obsessions, and as an artist/curator, my work, only through my information consumption. The combination of object based and process based work, using formal taxonomies, with autobiography, attempts to contextualize this new information age.

I want to put it in the Plus 15 system, because I want it to be part of other people’s work and recreation life. To stop, and watch the images for a while, as a sort of home made tonic in cure of the more corporate, the more controlled and less formal work. I want them to find patterns in the images, to enjoy the work a little, and then to remember it in their mind’s eye. I want it to be an interior, personal, mirror to the larger walks and meaning seeking that we do in the city every day.

1. the assumption i had with regards to the market falling apart sort of collapsed with the most recent photo auctions, with work going for twice or three times its low estimates, even for work reprinted in larger editions for later work (ie avedon of bacall, shot in 1968, printed in 1980, edition of 50, 147k, 3x the estimate) (another avedon, his iconic photo of bardot, shot in the late 50s printed later, double the estimate) (less of an edition, but a penn photo of a cigarette in lips, shot in 61, printedin 1981, for 67000, more then 2x the estimate) (the 1984 print of Frozen Foods, edition of 33 is rising and rising and rising, low 6 figures here)
   
2. in the market, the former critical split b/w art and fashion work has basically disappeared
3. this collection, is all big names, not really famous photographers, glamour, high gloss, basic work, and even if it has a large collection of nudes, it doesn't even have the honour of a private porn stash
4. leni refienstahl's photos of massai warrors, two of which sold here, are weirldy, in their exoticizing power, and copereal fetish, more racist then the nazi work
5. in this context, it is curious how ironic ruff's work is meant, in with other nudes, it is a straight study, in wiht other conceptualists, it becomes an ironic detachment
6. two la chapelles for 27k and 29k about, respectivley, that the lower one is a nude of naomi campbell suggests the prices are low.
   
7. there arent any really great photos in this collection, iconic work, and pervy work, and occasinaly a pervy work that manages to be iconic, but nothing really strange, and the work that managed to play midas--that first lady of france tabloid thing, just proves that you can be vulgar even if you have bad tits.

2. again, most of the prints are the mid to late 70s editions, after the swaorkaski dictated rise in high market photo work (the complicated realtionship of collectors, and the new york graphic society, and that some of the portfolios come from there, strenghten this thesis. (and anyone who pays 481,000 for an edition from 75 shot in 44) (or 421k for an edition from 75 shot in 48) is a moron

4. ansel can shoot, even on the machine, his prints are luminous and his compositions are are extremely deliberate.

1. i always wonder what the implications are for conceptual or process work ending up as photographs, the taxonomy of it, esp with people like christo, where photos are part of a larger work, why are the drawings in the m/c auctions but the photos (ghettoized?) (also accocini)

Nan Goldin's formal work is really fantastic sometimes, her French Chris on the convertible, N.Y.C, sold for 12,5, uses the aqua teal of an open car hood, as a background for a v. pale man, ina white shirt and pants, laying on his back, across it. there is dark street behind the man and the car--the darkness, the whiteness, the colour of the car trunk, an almost perfect triangualr compositon (also, weirdly a peita, the car hood a virigin mary blue, the white of the flesh, marbelsque, the pose, etc)
3. i wonder if the high prices for sternfield's disaster photos, negativley impact his more prosiac work (ie a late printing of mclean virgina, the firefighter/pumpkin photo sold for 43k, while a better series of 8, including an almost perfect pick up truck photo, bought in)
4. if auctions work as a pedagogical tool, as both christies and sothebys suggest, what does it mean that the same 5 or 10 photographs show up at every photo session, often one or two images begin to define a photographer with a long career (the henry callahan photo of elenor in the lake, is the one that cuased this comment, cartier bresson's bike rider is the other one

1. a few unusal or rare works, including a coney island house of horror, but most of the common ones, disneyland's castle, midgets, nudists, the 1978 photos at the Down's community. (though Child selling plastic orchids at night, N.Y.C. sold for 163k)
2. though they are again, later impressions, the work from the mid 50s, not the magazine work, but the other work, is under selling, and exquisite, beautiful even. a qaulity that would corrupt over time. (thesis: arbus never lost her formal skill or the tenderness she felt for her subjects, but as she felt more and more like an outlier, the work took those classical skills, and merged it with this kind of populist freak sensiblity--sort of like what you see in velasquez's dwarf.)
3. she is also one of the great photographers of adolsecence, which might add evidence to the outlier philosophy, there is a narrative in this collection, of children smoking, selling flowers, in blackface,dancing, at a pro america rally, as a couple, that suggests teenages, that have an awkardness that destablizes the rock and roll rebel work done by other photogs of teens, the work were v. well chosen, well curated.
