The Ascension of Jesus is the reigning symbol in the Christian West of the triumph over the temporal, a victory of the spirit over the doomed flesh, a resurrection of life in the face of death. The conflation of martyrdom, redemption, and eternal life in Christianity most certainly provided the powerful element of the messianic in the colonial impulse.
