these four new prints from edition copenhagen, by ryan mcginness, have a great colour sense, and are much more literal/linear then his earier work, but still ask questions like:
is it graphic design
is it art
what the fuck is the difference.
the colour seperation, with the fourth print, taking over elements of pritns one-three, is really clever as well.

cara phillips still lives of medical instruments work really well. they are not clinical, but elegant, and not reductive but taxonomic. her photos of medical carts are singular, i havent seen anything like them, and i think that their odd lighting and off composition work against the expectation of the viewer. the problem, by adding clunky titles, obvious portraits, and not knowing when to end (ie dont include the lipo book with the picasso repro in the middle of a tour of surgical instruments, it doesnt work) she completely undermines her skills.

kisok is a store of vernacular finnish design, a little over priced for actually buying anything, but with some really gorgeous things that you might really really want. the best thing though is the quirky, charming and often amusing paragraph long descriptions of the objects

at last a bredder evagenical sex scandal, richard roberts wife likes to dirty text young boys, adn over spend (the problem with her over spending is its so obsessive and pedestrian (a red apaprently she spent 39k for clothes at chico where a jacket goes for $100. i mean if you were going to spend 39k a year for clothes--go to nordstroms.) Rayner Banham Loves Los Angeles, a seminal bbc doc that renovated the idea of LA from disaster zone to fantasia, well worth looking at.

pat hobaugh's still lives are delicately and carefully painted, with open light, and carefully crafted details. the attention she pays to surfaces, and the compositon that are not crowded, but have a luxury of sparseness, amuse and delight. knowing that she is dutch, and that she is making fun of the history of dutch still lives, the politeness of dutch ornament, and the reputation that the dutch have for a kind of sexual wantoness, make the paintings even better.
