I am unsure of how I feel about McQueens new collection--it is beautiful, dramatic, and the historical signifers are top notch, and it does continue his difficult and ever present arguing wiht english aesthetics and history. Pae White, from the seires Smoke Matters, large tapestries. (i have been thinking lately of several tapestries that Motherwell did in the early 70s, where the idea of gestural, human based abstraction was remade as much larger red and white wall hangings with the thickness of broadloom carpet---there is something to note in the temporality and ephemerability of performative gesture as something so time intensive, much more time intensive then other means of production--it also reminds me of the rot that underpins sometimes literally, sometimes symbolically, the memento mori dutch paintings. (and in the case of Motherwell, with the red on white, it actually looks like a crime scene)
