thinking about geoffs talking about eakins about a month ago, and lucie smiths discussion of bellows/eakins in american realism, i had a couple of thots

1) the connections b/w eakins and the photo/painting split are v. well documented, eakins photos were formally, almost classically infulenced, not cold, but v. much about the poses of greece and rome, you could see in them the plaster casts and statues that were part of the academy, no matter how intimate the work was, there were boxers and apollos, discus throwers, adn atheletes not of america, but of the ancient world. he claims whitman, but when whitman wrote:

Twenty-eight years of womanly life and all so lonesome.

She owns the fine house by the rise of the bank,

(and of course, there are only 6 men here, and the 6 men are nude, not stripped, polite, and the women is absent, the voyuer is gone, the intimacy of the details of the male form is gone, and yet, the tenderness in which the landscape is intergrated with the boys, makes it a v. explicitly homoerotic, queer, boyloving text...he returns all of the contexts to the greek model, which might have been the scandal in phildelphia)

i always thot that the bellows 42 kids was a pardoy of eakins (well it is a parody of eakins, but i was wondering why the hell he did it), and i think i figured it out, lucie called it a snap shot, and the stripping, the half dressed, the chaotic mess of bodies, and the brackish water, suggesting urban runoff, well its a snapshot versus a formed portrait, a brownie vs a albumen...so the parody is one of eakins classical arcadia, and also his use of photography (ie new techonlogy) to remake the bodies of greece, to classicise and formalise something radically new.

bellows then is a post industrial, almsot marxist critque of eakins wealth and privelege?

(i know that bellows was a print maker, did he take photogs?)

What i love about kurlands work, is it has that cult of femmine, mary daly, mid 70s vibe, the chalice and the blade stuff, but its also really uncanny, dark and magikal things in teh woods, filled with ghostly presence,s makes teh idea of birth, and the cult of birth, into a dangerous thing,. fertillity, or fertility cults, had a intimate connection between what was born and what would die, and the femminsit art that reclaimed those cults, thot all was kind and peaceful.the work is so strong because the work is so dark.



60 ooo pounds of free books given to british boys. the books are the usual reactionary collection of colonial and violent adventures, that sort of give children premission to engage in acts of destruction, it also means, like the dangerous books for boys, children are learning skilsl that are activley out of date, so instead of learning how to put up a wireless network, or get around on the subway, they learn this false arcadian vision of killing rabbits or making shelter. a kid is more likely to get lost in a strange enighbourhood then in the woods these days. (all of that said, the criculum at saint johns was filled with this shit, with the boys books, adn it was v, idelogical, but i learnt to love the old birtish adventures, but they put the adventure over the violence--so i had to learn on my own what haggard or kipling meant to people under the empire. (though i do like that comics, sf, fantasy, etc are much more common)
