30 Words on 30 Singles:
Colbie Callibat—Bubbly
It’s polite, kind of pretty, and lovely. I can imagine it sung better by people who have much more to prove, like maybe Jessica Simpson. It’s still too nice, though.
Justin Timberlake—Lovestoned.
He has such a talent for dirty rythym, and everything that he touches has turned to gold. This is just him coasting, the same sounds, the same grooves. It disappoints.
Kenny Chesney---Never Wanted More.
It’s a response to Tim McGraw’s Last Dollar as sentimental ode to fidelity, to both god and a good woman. I always find this shit more moving then I should.
Posh Spice feat. Nas—Full Stop.
It’s really awful isn’t it? All of those rumours of scrapping her last album as quality control seem completely accurate. Also she has never been a good girl. Fundamentally unlistenable.
Avril Lavigne—When You are Gone
Though tinkling piano’s will make everything better. The song lacks the proper falling apart theatrics for the listener to believe that she is in real pain. Give us the masochism.
Pitbull, etc—Go Girl.
I really love how he manages to draw out every word, the languorous pleasure of power becomes explicit. The lyrics don’t do anything for me, but the delivery sure does.
Akon—Blame it On.
I keep thinking that maybe he should quit apologizing and stand up and do the shit he has promised, but then I am white and in the suburbs, and hypocritical.
KEyisha Cole, Lil Kim and Missy—Let it Go.
I love the whole dump the motherfucker already message, but for these three, who have spent so much time articulating sexual power, they would do something less generic when together.
Blake Lewis—You Give Love A Bad Name
I find the Bon Jovi on the country charts an amusing thing, and American Idols attempt to move away from Ballads even funnier. Conflating the two is just a mess.
Sean Kingston—Beautiful Girl
This is a manipulative piece of psychopathology. You’re so beautiful that if you leave me, I will kill myself, but we can be together all the time, if you stay
Kayne West and John Meyer—Bittersweet
His ego’s engulfed anything that would have been interesting. She cut me like surgery? Is that the great lyric that has been promised? And calling women bitches is just tired?
Citzens for a Better America—Paris Hilton
Tabloid luridness meets old school punk class hatred. For something so played out and immediate, it’s fantastic little pop gem. It’s also more self aware then these things usually are.
Kelly Clarkson—Sober
Exhausting, and very sad, with an ambiguousness that seems very grown up. When she talks about being sober, and grieving, the enmeshment corrals the listener. Does what Avril failed at.
Leanne Rhimes—Nothin’ Better To Do.
The closest we have come to Bobbie Gentry or Jeanne C Riley in ages, no matter how much Gretchen Wilson tries to convince ourselves otherwise. Sexy as all get out.
Brick and Lace—Love is Wicked
They move so quickly, the words overlapping each other, then withdrawing. The percussion and that twee little flute detail all make it more interesting then a standard summer club banger.
Jordin Sparks—
I cant do this, the high falsetto and the theatrics/acrobatics seem not to be good singing as much as well trained academic exercises, the musical equivalent of the Barbizon school.
Amy Winehouse—Rehab (Jay Z Remix)
The verses he has added make the song into both celebrity cautionary tales, and an urbanized context. Some of his rhymes have a tight internal logic, but for what purpose?
Rihanna—Shut Up and Drive.
This is the summer’s single. Complicated aurally, with a wide variety of noisy mechanical detailing. The best thing might be how much control she exudes, and how ahistorical it is.
Lauryn Hill-Lose Myself
Who would have thought we would have found the new single from the queen of afro-centric hip-hop on the soundtrack to a mediocre kids summer movies. It’s desperate and clingy.
T-Pain and Piles- Shawnty
There is almost too much going on here, I think, too much shimmering sound effects and computer blips and beeps, sounds like samples from the tractor beam of Star Trek
Fergie—Barracuda:
The weird thing about Fergie is that we haven’t gotten the obligatory girl power anthem. This respectful cover of Heart’s masterpiece doesn’t have enough ovaries to make it her first.
Lil Mama—Girlfriend
Respectful of the original, without being obsequious, the track compresses the message in a careening and spinning carnival, while still (barely) maintaining control. Lil Mama’s thousand-mile-a- hour mouth, is fantastic.
R Kelly and Usher—Same Girl.
For someone so smooth in delivery (and he has a beautiful, intricate, and tender voice) the sheer chaos of his narratives, and the weirdness of metaphors, never seem to collapse.
Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson—Because of You.
This does sound like a second rate Martina single, and Reba is aging, so the whole powerhouse delivery thing seems to be failing her. Clarkson doesn’t know what to do.
Korn-Evolution
Not cookie monster apocalypse enough to be interesting as pure noise, not hooky enough to be as interesting as pop, will make a fortune on disenfranchised suburban white teenage boys.
Tim and Faith—I Need You
Featuring the latest and greatest in codependent metaphors (esp. drugs and Jesus) imprinted into the usual mentions of geography and cowboying, a tender and deeply erotic ode to married love.
T Pain—Bartender
For all of the fuck odes in hip-hop, I don’t believe that most have sex. This one about bartenders is similar to the ones about strippers, and it’s just silly.
Maroon 5—Can’t Stop.
Would be fairly innocuous MOR pop, if the lyrics weren’t so pathetic, including mentions of making love to a pillow, or how he touches himself like somebody else. Literally masturbatory.
50 Cent—Amusement Park
The same forced metaphors and bored delivery that he has on most albums, he isn’t even trying anymore, and at least Candy Shop was mildly fun to sign along with.
Ryan Adams—Two
Adams melancholy hand wringing keeps boring me. That he keeps falling into sub-Neil Young vocalisms makes things even worse. He had potential, but I miss Whiskeytown more each solo album.
Colbie Callibat—Bubbly

From John Savage's Teenagers, 2007, Viking.
One of the most haunting moments in Peter Pan...occurs when Peter waits to be submerged in the Mermaids Lagoon. He hears a "drum beating within him" that repeats the phrase "To die will be an awfully big adventure"Although it was George Llewelyn Davies who actually uttered this famous epigram--in 1900 during the Boer War--it was Barrie who had planted the idea in his head, thanks to the relentless descriptions of dead children and the paradisaical Never Never land to which they flew...

One of Peter's most fervent fans was an unmarried man in his mid-forties. Robert Stephen Smyth Baden Powell was so taken with Barrie's play that he returned the next day to see it again, recommended it to his friends, and developed a relationship with the actress who played Mrs Darling...

The new war madness was defined by the pyschologist Charles Myers, who in Feb. 1905 called it shell shock. Doctors quickly noted a cluster of symptoms that "followed the shock of an exploding shell":paralysis, stupor, amnesia, an uncontrollable jerking of the limbs in a demented echo of Nijinsky's prewar dances. In July 1915, the professor of medicine at Oxford recorded an "orgy of neuroses and psychoses and gaits and paralyses. I cant imagine what has got into the central nervous system of the men...hysterical dumbness, blindness and anaesthesia galore."...

As part of the morality drive against the London's debauched nightlife, the young women of "West End Bohemia" were linked with drugs. In a January 1916 column, a journalist named Quex observed the prevalence of "that exciting drug cocaine": "It is so easy to take--just snuffed up the nose, and no one seems to know why the girls who suffer from this body and soul racking habit find the drug so easy to obtain. In the ladies cloakroom of a certain establishment two bucketfuls of thrown away small circular cardboard boxes were discovered by the cleaners the other day--discarded cocaine boxes"

The sect pursued both moral renament and pacifism as well as its four point doctrine of absolute honesty, absolute purity, absolute unselfishness and absolute love...

Youth was at the sharp end of national breakdown, as the bellicose nationalism of the previous four years turned inward. German adolescents brought the war home, as they engaged in pitched street battles justified by extremist ideologies. ...the "wild clique of homeless youths were very much toughs. They had the depraved and troubled faces of hoodlums" they wore a bizarre costume of Chaplinesque bowler hats. "old women's hats with the brims turned up in Amazon fashion adorned with ostrich plumes and medals: with handkerchiefs or scarves in screaming colours: their ears were pierced with pendants or enormous rings, while their leather shorts with surmounted by immense triangular belts also of leather-both daubed with the colours of the rainbow, esoteric numbers, human profiles, and inscriptions such as wildfrei (wild and free) or Rauber (badnits)" The wild cliques had begun in the cahoots of the great war and multiplied with postwar inflation and post crash unemployment,. Completely without adult control, these "Ring Youth Gangs" ran wild in the outer Berlin districts linked by a concentric riming of avenues. As their numbers were swelled by thousands of homeless youths, these adolescents--mostly aged between sixteen and eighteen--organized themselves into a tribal society that completely rejected civilized morality. They turned their hatred the society that had abandoned them. The names that he Wild Cliques chose illustrated their "unbridled instinct": Blood of the tartars, Blood of the Indians, Blood of the Cossacks, Wild Crime Girls Terror, Red Apaches, Black Love, Bloody Carcasses, Pirates of the Forest, and Schnapps Guzzlers." With no legal earnings or state support these wildfrei lived by homosexual prostitution car theft and burglary. Comprised of both sexes...the cliques exacted regular financial contributions to support comrades in trouble with the police. Secrete initiation violent sadistic group orgies--exposed the true savagery of the Wild Cliques. Living totally outside society, they were able to give full rein to the rampant adolescent sexuality that successive generations of youth experts and warned against...

Denounced by the Vichy minister of Education, Abel Bonnard, as "the last vestiges of an individualistic society" The Zazous got their revenge by ridiculing his statement was that Joan of Arc was the perfect example to all young France. This was the perfect example of the crystallised perfume of stupidity: that sent them sourcing the Vichy newspapers for the latest nuggets that they passed around for fun. We got energy from the absurdity of the situation..."

In the Rhine-Ruhr area, resisters from the Socialist Worker Youth, the Red Falcons, the Bunde, and Catholic Youth Groups got together in large, ad hoc delinquent groups called the ... Kittlesback pirates. With size and local knowledge on their side, they openly defied the Hitler Youth, the the extent that the organization became "virtually defunct" in some areas. The most consistent irritant for the Nazis, were the Catholic youth org., which refused to integrate with the Hitler Youth even after they had expressly ordered to do so...

The names indicated the kind of life they wanted, freedom from the constant harassment of the Hitler Youth and the police, These wild Cliques and boys and girls traveled around the country, hitchhiking and walking as far as the Black Forest, Berlin or Vienna in direct contravention of police controls and travel restrictions...

Inspired "with the spirit of contradiction, we could not stomach the trinity of Travaiil-FamillePartie that they were trying to force upon France. We got energy from the absurdity of the situation..."

Video of Nina Simone playing Sea Line Women, the band has some problems in the beginning, and how she interacts, with a severity against error is as interesting, as how iconic, and almsot liturgical she makes the end of the performance-well not liturgical, but w. a definite respect w, how work songs become ritual songs. this is one of my favourite simone songs, and this is a great performance of it.

what i didnt know about johnsons glass house, is that it has a brick house behind it, an exact reversal of the aesthetic and emotional effects of the first, both working on the space as a modernist pull/tug. its also interesting that as part of the national landuse fund buying the property, they had to buy four acres around it to make sure asshole mcmansions dont fuck w. johnsons vision.

freebergs photos of chelsea galleries have a frisson of security theater kitsch, they arent boring enough to be truly interesting though. (though the top of the head and the mostly lack of art is interesting)
i put off talking about bernd belcher dying, because i find his infulence difficult to talk about, and i wonder if it will be his role as educator (he founded the dusseldorf school which gave us ruff, struth, gursky, hoefer, amongst others)...or how he managed to quietly and w/o ego work on the same project with the same person for decades. i think that maybe that is the most powerful, not the work but the process. that said, the photos are handsome, imposing, and severe. how they scale up and down, how you can have a wall of them or just two, and it works is kind of amazing...im going to have to think about this for a while, but he was one of my heros, for sure. here is another story. this tate article talk about the dusseldorf school and their involvement
this story is like Flannery O Connor and Dennis Cooper together:
A former employee at Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede dinner theater pleaded guilty Wednesday to reduced charges stemming from allegations that he molested four child performers during a Christmas show.
Armando Gonzalez, 33, was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for his first of four aggravated sexual battery trials based on accusations of inappropriate sexual contact from four children who worked with Gonzalez at the 2004 Christmas at Dixie show in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Instead, Gonzalez, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, pleaded guilty to 12 counts of attempt to commit aggravated sexual battery upon all four victims in a plea deal with Sevier County, Tenn., prosecutors that netted him a nine-year prison sentence.

reading john savage's teenagers and watching boys in the band in the same week as the anglican ssb i have a thesis.
tradtionally when same gendered sexual behaviour is in fasion, ideas of polymorphus, free floating sexual and gender roles are in fashion. (cf florence, 1490s; london,1660s,1890s;berlin, 1920s; new york; 1890s, 1920s, 1970s; los angeles, 1940s). now, in the west, homosexaulity is again in fashion but it isnt the polymorphus, unfettered sexuality. it has engaged with the structures of both clegy and the state--so it has to be defined as tangible as possible. that said, the tangibility means that there are two problems
1) the idea of sexuality as a stable and explicit thing, as opposed to a seires of neogitions or processes as it has been historically, means that the enlightment rhetoric of personhood is dragged into it, and im not sure it belongs.
2) queer folx (ie people who think of sexuality as instable, or time/place orientated)are unfairly forced to engage in fights for liberation using other peoples terms and conditions.
to explicitly make this about same gendered marriage/blessings--instead of radically decentralizing the conversation, and talking about how sexuality can be viewed as a blessing and a gift from god, we have placed (and imho created/punished) an other.

jim iserman takes modernist aesthetics, adn moves them into postmodern craft, w. grids knit, and giant rainbow albers ripoffs, but in foam. brilliant work. (the best work is the fabric wallhangings, which make objects out of the american history of geometric abstraction, from amish quilts to 60s textiles to actual paintings, and the stained glass work, which reminds me of the severe and lovely examples on vernacular protestant chapels and churches)
patrick de brock a belgian gallery, has a large selection of candida hoefer work, but only work shot in belgium. i wonder if bought them or comissioned them.
someone stop me from renting an old fashioned black and white photo booth.
shore kept a diary while doing one of his all american road trips, and the diary features mostly incredibly practical information, money spent, places stayed, reciepts kept, postcards delievered, photos shot, et. al. its a record for the taxmen, with the only perhaps aesthetically vital thing in it, the postcards he bought, but even those have been bested by Parr. Tillmans article, for art forum, is hysterical though, becaue she writes w. such depth about how impt this work is, mostly i think b/c phiadon is publishing it, and they have to justify it somehow (that said, i will most likely buy the volume) (also, from tillmans ntoes and the pages reproduced here, he only seemed to eat pancakes for breakfast, and almost always steaks for dinner)

everytime i read kipnis on porn, i believe the world will be okay for a while.
you know max hardcore is really hard to defend, and i really would like to see him go away, his personae, and his films i find digusting, often phyiscally. he has been charged with obscenity in flordia, and the problem seems to be his fisting videos mostly. fisting isnt everybodies taste, but i do worry that if ti is outlawed as obscene, then useful resources like hand in the bush, will be banned as well, we know this from the butler desc. in canada, where the extreme edges of bdsm culture mean that the middle will not be able to be seen.
enrico baj whose combos of naked kitsch and sloppy monsters broke something in me v. young, and whos work still confounds, frightens, amuses and arouses me, a sort of combo b/w KOBRA (he was aware of this, naming one of his works hommage d asger john) and debuffet, but better then both of them, was making sculptures and collages into this millenium, which is awesome. the link goes to his galleriest, and the large sculpture from mechhanos is well worth seeing.

little live thing blog of a vancouver photog, has interesting things to say about marine biology, photography, and leftist poltiics, the blog is excellent and his insights are well worth reading from the beginning. this entry on winnogrand's last years, living in los angeles, and shooting w/o either devopling or porcessing, and the images that he did take being so badly constructed, is something that i hve been thinkign about for a long time. there is an arguement in my head b/w wether he completely lost his shit or he almost became a concemptualist. all the little live things makes the arguement that by the ritual of shooting taking over the other skills of shooting, that by taking photos of his child at the bus stop before his child left for school for example, that there was something conceptual there. ray says that was just his way of saying hey, kid, i love you have a good day. both arguements are really strong. looking thru other photogs, who do the point and click aesthetic, snapshotters, they all still use film, i think even mcginley uses film, and i know that friedlander, sternfeild, eggleston, shore, goldin, parr, frank, etc all did as well, all do as well. they havent changed. i wonder if the 300 000 photos left in the dark room, abandonded, would have changed if he had a digital camera. hes the only photog i can imagine saying fuck it, and buying a 200 dollar fuji finepix, and just pushing it all thru. maybe thats why i feel so protective about winnogrand, is that this seems to be a cautionary tale about the failings of point and shoot. daune michaels new burlesque on the market and the canon of photogs seems to be getting some real press lately, he says this about gary winnogrand:
Gary Winogrand was a snapshooter. A snapshooter is a voyeur who loves the act of taking pictures but doesn't necessarily care about the photographs. He left seven thousand rolls of undeveloped films.
this is what the self taught critic joe sarzaowkisi (sp) says about him:
"The technical decline of the last work was perhaps accelerated by Winogrand's acquisition, in 1982, of a motor-driven film advance for his Leicas, which enabled him to make more exposures with less thought. On the same day he acquired an eight-by-ten-inch view camera, an instrument that proposes a diametrically different approach to photography. The new camera was perhaps an acknowledgment that his old line of thought was nearing the breaking point. He did not use the eight-by-ten, but he talked about using it..."
and i cant find the qoute, but in the ongoing moment by geoff dyer, he talks about winogrand as a negative eaxmple of the ease of picture makingi n the digital era, he kind of thinks that photography died when cheap digitals began. this blog entry talks about the problems of winogrand in realtion to dyer.

ive been praying about the anglican synod for a week now, and kept quiet, becaue i dont know how to balance xian unity and radical inclusive justice. the st michaels report didnt pass, and i dont know how the history works, but i wonder how we dealt with women priests and bishops, or vernacular lirturgy, or radical ecunemial energies, from the 60s and 70s, pacifism as well, and how those tools have seemed to be lost or adonded.

saw the first trailers of captivity, which will be the real test for the ongoing market for westernized/hollywoodized xtreeeeeem horror. the difference b/w roth adn the dudes who made captivity is that roth has an elegance to his decay. the captivity folx just cant shoot. how long can i keep making visual arguements to displace moral ones?
A few months ago, an art critic asked me about my "signature style." Well, this question startled me. I've never thought in those terms. My work from the seventies, which to this critic exemplified my "signature style," was made by me in response to certain questions and problems I needed to pursue. I never thought in terms of style. The style was a result of my exploration."

I keep thinking about art for arts sake, and my own way of approching these things. i view my work as solving problems. so what ever the best way of solving a paticular problem, or sorting a paticular set, is the tool i will use. sometimes thats words, sometimes thats pictures, sometimes thats taxonomies, and sometimes thats something else.
