also the west is one of the most absurdly photogenic places to film, just absurdly beautiful, and it is impossible to shoot it badly, the several long frames of cnayons and praries and deserts were image porn, and the shots inside with few exceptions did not have the same care--it is his first movie, and he should learn how to control that but this might be a quibble because of the interiors of ford and of 23 Quai De Commerce, so i might be worn out of cowboyed western shots.
five thots on a single man:

  1. colin firth was v. good
  2. the manic laughter to manic crying domestic desperation thing moore does is always awesome
  3. the art direction was exquisite but overwhelmed the rest of the film
  4. it was a not v coded, arthouse self congratulatory arguement in favour of gay marriage by way of aesthetics.
  5. dave p: first movie that i saw with a manic pixie boy.

five thots on crazy heart:

  1. the half a dozen scenes with colin ferrel as a keith urban charachter depending on a much better writer, and in general the parasitic rships that writers have with their artists was something unseen in hollywood.
  2. the scenes of bowling alley gigs and pick up bands, of the desperation of a working musician had a genuine working class feel, and jeff bridges as a fucked up drunk had a broken, ursine quality that he earned
  3. both of those make this the best movie about nashville since maybe apted's coal miners daughter--and the movie about that would have been well worth watching
  4. but the romantic scenes with gyllenhaal were predictable and boring, she was playing the same part she always does, and that he was redeemed by her grace felt horribly conventional and extranous.
  5. which means how do you make a movie about parasites, the broken, the wanderers and the like with a conventional hollywood expectations--can it be done or has it been done by the 70s--ever since the mechanics of film making has been democratized, i always want a working class cowboy to make a film like this, but it doesn't or hasn't happened...
five points for systematics:

  1. i am not sure that i have hope, and i am not sure that i am still xian
  2. i find something sustaining in the liturgical contexts of trad. xianity, i find even if they are rhetorical fictions, rhetorical fictions that still maintain a use function (cf rorty)
  3. so it moves back to the hardy/oxen connundrum, the mystic desire for the presence of the divine, the erotic longing, the lingering heartbreak, and also images of absentee fatherdom
  4. so it becomes a hope in the midst of an anihilating self--and so where do we go from there?
  5. what does god have to do with the above, i fundamentally don't know, but not knowing is legitmate? (beckett)

What do you think?” he says, “Do you think it’s going to take meeting someone who I admire more than I admire myself? But isn’t it also about a beautiful vagina? Aren’t we talking about a matrix of a couple different things here? Like, you need to have them be able to go toe-to-toe with you intellectually. But don’t they also have to have a vagina you could pitch a tent on and just camp out on for, like, a weekend? Doesn’t that have to be there, too? The Joshua Tree of vaginas?

Queen Elizabeth's Prayer at Bristol.

[August 15, 1574]

STRETCH forth, O Lord most mightie, Thy right hand over me, and defend me from mine enemys, that they never prevayle against me. Give me, O Lord, the assistance of Thy Spiritt, and comfort of Thy grace, truly to know Thee, intirely to love Thee, and assuredly to trust in Thee. And that as I do acknowledge to have received the government of this Church and Kingdom at Thy hand, and to hold the same of Thee, so grant me grace, O Lord, that in the end I may render up and present the same again unto Thee, a peaceable, quiett, and well-ordered State and Kingdome, as also a perfect reformed church, to the furtherance of Thy glory. And to my subjects, O Lord God, grant, I beseech Thee, faithful and obedient hearts, willingly to submit themselves to the obedience of Thy word and commandments, that we altogether being thankfull unto Thee for Thy benefitts received, may laud and magnifie Thy Holy Name world without end. Grant this, O merciful Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

QUEEN ELIZABETH. (1574.)

the story was that joesph smith went to the woods, and he prayed

as a result of this prayer

god came down and gave him the restored gospel

so i heard this story every day for a decade and a half when i grew up

but i went to the grove a few days ago

and it was a wood lot

of populars, lookign no more different, no more sacred

then any of the other copses on the road side

the videos and the paintings from childhood were these beautific images

of cathedrals in the wildnerness

dissapited here

but it was good

in the sense that it confirmed my idea that the church, even at it's most mystical or it's most weird

was plain

was banal, was about practicality

there was holiness in the plainness

some thots on oneida

  • the bookstore had several books that were out of print, and cheap.
  • one of them was special love/special sex a diary of one of the members
  • there were 45k visitors to neida b./w 1862 and 1867, this was only mentioned in passing by the tour but thids must have been a huge source of money (cf similar numbers of visitors to the shaker community near by
  • the culture of mutual criticism c/w est, etc in the 70s
  • Victor Neyes, the son of the founder, was thought to have gone insane due to a combo of masturbation and certain texts, including goethe, he ended in a philly asylum
  • prophibtion against masturbation as an example of selfish pleasure, and against the unitarian "biblical communinsm", but also the 19th century idea that it saps strength
  • little or no information in the material about the interventions b/w homosocial and homosexual, neweth diaries mention male friendship, and switching rooms, and the like, plus the idea that everyone is married, and the liminal space of same gendered friendship sin the 19th century new england (cf d michael quinn and the lds; boston marriages) but little or no work has been done about this in the oneida
  • all of the apartments focus on a central parlour, which functions as an example of the architechture of control, but a difuse, community one, sort of a paropticon set on its side. the parlour was supposed to control gossip, backbiting, and the like, but often failed--in fact the discourses of communalism that were encouraged and the discourses of communalism that were discouraged were often flowing from the same sources (cf eliza snow's diaries of plural marriage in utah, and how to lighten the community of sister wives)
  • the refusal or inability to mainstream the practive was not that big a deal--the usual reasons for disalootiuon, hunger, backbiting, etc was less opernational then the natural dissoloution that marks the life span of these spaces
  • the weirdest thing about the discourses of this space--is what caused its eventual downfall was the desire for single families and heterosexual pair bonding; the queerest thing about this place could be a "special" friendship (c/c the use of words like unusual or special friendship in satholci seiminaries to note male sms)
  • much of the biblical discourse of the onedia centres on eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven as a singifer of sexual radicialism
  • i still wonder what happened after the disovling--to the adults and children who had to leave this utopia, what does expuslsion mean in this context
  • much of the deciding who would do which work was decided by an almost random combition of skill, mutal benifance, luck, and hard work
  • in the library voulmes of the dial, on meserism, spiurtralism, fashonaible texts on the avant garde spiritual practices of the day; they visited and traded pracitical information with the shakers; and the mansion was based at least partially on deisgns by robert own, communalism was not only wiht in their own spaces but w/i an emerging community of these new spaces
  • more research needed on the onedia's use of st paul
  • there practice of spiritual eugenics versus personal or ethnic eugenics, as an excuse to have children
  • prefectionism as a unique american way of sorting out the tension b/w work and grace, and is v calvinist.
i think the most powerful thing about the oneida community is that it chose to disband in 1851. it had a community meeting about it's own disoultion.

as well, it seems to be less about sex, the religious c ommunities here in genreal seem to be less about sex then their reputation has settled, and more about how to live amongst each other--even the titles for work against monogomy--plurarl in the lds, complex here, has a lingustic edge, we want to live lives of complexity, of pluralism, god calls us to live lives of complexity, and pluralism.

rochester art musuem was weird, mostly little old ladies bullshit, with half a dozen interesting works.

  1. a fantastic rachel reyes flower painting, murky and muddy, exterior, with more frogs and snakes then bugs--is her work a criticism of the domestic, or an attempt to bring flower painting to the place of morality that still lives occupied
  2. a dutch painting where translucent lace was overlayed with pattenred lace over hair
  3. a really sexy black on black van dyck portrait
  4. some folk art, including a caraseoul goat and a penn dutch swan work
  5. a raven mask from the haida
  6. some american naive work
  7. some lawerences, a good stewart, a bright green on green frankenthaler, a crimsom reinhard that has gone pink with age, a decent stuart davis
mostly though it was shit, irrdeemable shit

tract homes:
tiny editions, no more then 11

14
subtitled showing actual damage, the only damage one sees is a slight hole in the wall, and an askew plate that attached to the plaster

15
landscape is not in, and occupation can only be told by t he shampoos bottles on the open window

9
the best thing about 9 is the small pipe for liquid run off, although the main thing one notices is the fake brick chimney

7
looks weirdly french, white stucco housem with pines and populars poking out the colours are great

8
looks like 9 but it has an oblique angle and no pipe

3
might be my favourite, with a large black screen door, and silver flashing. the brick detailing, and the dirty stucco places the cleaniness of the window in stark relief

2
is like 3 but it is a window and not a door, the flashing on the left is twisted, the window is slashed with white mud, it looks like a drawing and not a foto, it looks like twombly

1
is jammed next to the other ones, and looks claustrophibic

6
one plain wall, grass that is dark grey, provide a visual funnel to the background, where a white house wiht promient windows is

5
the two doors are almost out of the frame, the window is off centre, the stucco has much wider sweeps then the other work

4
is just after construction and the windows are smeared with dry wall daub, you see the whole house,,,,, and not detail work, and it is almost cinematic, like 2 and 3 were close ups, and the camera is backing up so you can see the whole shot

16
foregrounds the roof, which has an orderly pattern of ceader shakes, the pattern is interupted by a chimney

13
another blackc window, this one wiht three panes instead of the two panes in shots 2 and 3. full door, the diagonal of a roof as it reaches down before the front door, mostly recxtangles, a horinztal one, then the door which is vertical next to the vertical door a small black hole, ahnd the horizontal window

15
stucco wall, boring even for baltz

24
a high bathroom window, half lost in the top of the frame, then a variety of vents,

23
is the only one i can imagine selling real estate, glorious white tones, vertical junipers, a immacualte conrete driveway, little extranous detailing, real estate porn but more helmut newton then anything

24
some of these are so close togehter, they abut and they are what my mother said of sherwoood park elephants on postage stamps, if suburban architechtual photography in the west was about space, about the accumlation of space, even in a cvernacular sense, then having photos like this one, with buildings abutting each other, in a monumental way sort of takes the piss out of that tendency--monumental in their colouring, in how they are presented in the frame, in how they are lit and how the photos are constructed themselves

19
another detail shot, but the black dirt in the lower eighth of the photo makes the first organic apperance (orangic as in mess, the trees in 23 and the grass in other shots is too artifical, too well constructed, the tendency is to work against the organic instinct

23
5 vertical rectangles, one vertical rectangle, three verticale sqaures, one circle

10
more dirt, same position as 19, but the large central instinct in 19 is decortaive, and central to the frame, this is to the far left, and is functional. as well, the colour (white wall for about two thirds of the frame, grey strip, black dirt is to be noted)

20
one of the few diagonals similar to the other utitlity shotys

21
white wall, dark grey set of vertical stripes, black plain window, recessed, smaller and tighter

11
the drywallers daub in the window looks like flowers,

18
dark grey to white from the top right corner, plain wall, wiht a small grey box atop a grey line atop a black line in the very bottom

  • south wall plast x 350 costa mesa

  • exquisite printing,

    • north wall master speicalist company 1640 monovria costa mesa

    • wet wall

    • and a strip of windows,

    • two long, one slightly shorter with white curtains, and one smaller with a grey window, and then a black window half covered by a white shade

  • construction detail, east wall, xerox, 1821 dryer road santa anna

    • far left a wall with three shades of grey and half painted

    • the grey transitions into a concrete wall

    • foreground of cinder blocks (andre?)

    • large wall

    • fire escape

    • photographic historical

sand dunes

  • ruscha

some of the windows have reflections, of palm trees and the like, reminiscent of stnd landscapes, but the best ones are the ones that have no back ground, no reflection, heavily minimal

smack in the middle of a composition that features a sqaure on a rectangle, two slightly oblong circles, furniture show room, mod couch in black leather and white plastic, reflection of gas stations—pure compostion on the outside, less pureo n the inside ; only depiction of a person is in one reflection, on the inside of a tract home, with a palm tree and a poster of a woman, my second favourite foto of a califonrian palm tree, after adams

has this much care been taken to shoot parking lines the difference b/w spray paint and non, b/w those done carefully and those scattered, the odd cornos of paint in the sprayed lines is weirdly the only chaotic touch

other perfect examples of form

two doors with vertical lines inset in a dark grey almost black cinderblock wall, the cinderblock wall a grid

a vertical white ramp, abuting a white wall, adjacent to a black door with clear vertical liens, above three long rectangles

a full wall of breezeway brick, the only foto in this seires whose interest seems to be about patterns, about the minimal repeating of patterns rather then the rejecting of them—the argument could be made that baltz is a minimalist, or he is talking in the language of late 70s minimalism, but the interest in patterns that are oblique, interupted, do not exist in the traditional ways, suggests that though he may not be an ironist, he was working against fine art patterning in work outside of photographic practice

language of sublimity

what is unusal or remarkable is placed outside the context, for example one of two greyed out doors straight in the middle of the composition against the rule of thirds, a snaller door with a grid on the far left, and on the right, a triple circles, half out of the frame

or one that has a collection of rubber pilled pell mell but we only see a spare inch of it

grey on grey, black on black, white on white

vertical grey band about 6/10th of thee way up, with a fire escape bisecting it near the edge of the frame

two bare tree

such creamy greys, sumptoousness, materiality

atget?

Compare park city 83 interoir, unfinished dry wall, window dusty, fire place with plastic stuffed in it, absent of even the remakrs of people, with the implicit colonialism of owens

a garage with two small windows, high up showign just floruscents, then a larger windows, with a car, some tools, a trampoline

question of the ironist, and aesthetic purity

should these be connected b/c they are beautiful?

Shadows and patterns of trees on walls

the trees seem so absent, spindly, and out of place, like pearls on a pig

three juniperrrs at the edge of a parking lot

assumption of emptiness, but like the circle.furniture show room one above, there is work that is extremely busy, one with two grage doors, four pillars, a electric box, a garabage conatier, a fume chimney, and 9 meters with two fuse boxes

but one with just three large black squares

little or no text:

sand dunes hand painted

raad and no addmitance on another

one with two garage doors half out of the frame and then two regualr doors, the left one labelled d, the right one c

783 milla road shipping and reciving barely visible

little or no weather

only one has a remeant of snow

little or no odd angles or artistic angles, only two on an oblique

the irony of post modernism: by not making art, one makes art
