3. the art direction was exquisite but overwhelmed the rest of the film
4. it was a not v coded, arthouse self congratulatory arguement in favour of gay marriage by way of aesthetics.

five thots on crazy heart:

1. the half a dozen scenes with colin ferrel as a keith urban charachter depending on a much better writer, and in general the parasitic rships that writers have with their artists was something unseen in hollywood.
   
2. the scenes of bowling alley gigs and pick up bands, of the desperation of a working musician had a genuine working class feel, and jeff bridges as a fucked up drunk had a broken, ursine quality that he earned
3. both of those make this the best movie about nashville since maybe apted's coal miners daughter--and the movie about that would have been well worth watching
   
4. but the romantic scenes with gyllenhaal were predictable and boring, she was playing the same part she always does, and that he was redeemed by her grace felt horribly conventional and extranous.
5. which means how do you make a movie about parasites, the broken, the wanderers and the like with a conventional hollywood expectations--can it be done or has it been done by the 70s--ever since the mechanics of film making has been democratized, i always want a working class cowboy to make a film like this, but it doesn't or hasn't happened...
