Slim Arons is a really interesting case in the rise and fall of reputations, he made his career with a couple of coffee table books from the 70s, of parties and estates of the ruling american classes, often in miami, palm beach, and the like. the aspirational tendecy of the work, and the casual composition, made him popular in work like harpers bazaar for about 5 years, after the end of Studio 54, and before the hard edges of 80s capitalism. A number of professional nostaglists revived him in the late 90s, his work being an example of the anti avant garde. he was one of the few examples of ease, in both senses of the world, of ease in terms of money and ease in terms of composition. when one wanted the snapshoot look, but also wanted jackie o or cz guest instead of heroin addicts. the other thing was the colour, if you look at the other photo workers who emerged in the 70s, were washed out, ugly, or vulgar. slim arons was a master of light, bright, free, and handsome. the emergence of him in the late 90s, and the selling of his two books in the secondary market, before they were reissued then, is a narrative of class and taste, and i dont think its been written about in that sense. he died this weekend at the age of 89.
