Vintage interview with Jim Jones son, recently unearthed. (like all great american journalism, it begins with guns and money, and then gets strange)

the birth and death of a realtionship, told via embrodied text messages by ginger anyhow.

I have always thot that Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe was one of the only shows about working class values and culture on American Television, and though it was subtle about how it worked thru those issues, with good humour and a delicacy, it was a strangely political text--Rowe talking to Flora TV, confirms it (watch this)

40 years after greenbergs death, and the triumph of pop, there has been a number of attempts to re/deconstruct the narratives of modernism, this year it is the sardines and oranges show at the hammer, and a show of colourfield/shaped painting/decorative artist from the 60s called the Park Place crowd, at Blanton in Austin. link to the orange and sardine show here, with a mind blowing early hesse.

a dozen photos by heidi silmane of ysl's estate, formal and cold, and v. v. beautiful, in lovely b&w, the one of the glasses on carpet, moved me strangely and mournfully.

Jan Kaplinky visionary, futurist, and freak, making some of the most ball grabbingly weird buildings in the 20th Century, a sort of postmodern gaudi died last week.

I remember being in London, about 7 years ago, after a few hours in the british musuem, and in the book stores around there, and walking to the oxford circus, with its commerical noise, and having his storefront there, with its fracturing and its rigid patterning, provide a concise amagulation of both instincts. Plus his Selfridges for Brimingham is all spacey, plus its covered with giant sequins!

Balderassi Prime FAcie, funny and v. LA. (i keep trying to write about Balderassi, and i mean it plays the same game as Ruscha does, in that it does v. formal, v. high wire/lingustic work, but also makes these sexy/campy/funny pop peices, so it's a joke, and it is a deep lingustic joke, and it is an immediate joke, but it is also a joke w/o the freudian anxiety of people like well, Warhol or Prince. I think that the difference b/w LA pop and NY pop ius that LA pop is unafraid of the sunshine, there is nothing ceberal about it--& the assumption is that if one is not ceberal one is not thinking--Balderassi says lots of really interesting things about the way bodies or minds or desire or informaiton or media work/travel--what words mean, what formalism does in art, but also, sometimes its animal house jokes in latin. smart w/o being cebereal, formal w/o being cold, internal w/o being insidery, decadent w/o decay (like the legendary flash fronzen corpse of disney)

There is a reason Chuck Eddy wrote about this in his metal book:

marian cottillod does that old fashion trick of trying to look decadent in dead european hotels, almost succedes.

1. Given that I was raised mostly working class, you've given me a good reason to try out "Dirty Jobs". I've never seen that show before but heard it's really entertaining, so I must try it out.

2. Texas Monthly always has these really interesting covers. I got turned off by the actual content long ago when I realized they were more interested in the Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston areas than any other parts of the state, but their covers have always been interesting, and their Bum Steer Awards edition is pretty entertaining.

3. I like that Alice Bullard quote about Prozac. I think what happens to the abyss is that it just becomes a water table that gets pushed further down with time until the land is like North America's, with a water table that exists far below the surface.

4. And I like Salman Rushdie because he's very equal opportunity about the slagging off he does. He appeals to me much more than the hypocrite Noam Chomsky, who should be forced to live the rest of his days in totalitarian North Korea (Cuba would be far too good for him). I respect Rushdie because he makes *everyone* think; Chomsky's just a bitter and ungrateful hack who's been living in the Ivory Tower too long.
