I hate the word outsider when it is used to describe art, because it suggests a heriachy of approitness, and exoticises the ill, uneducated, ethnic or poor. That said, much of the art done in the basements and back yards, mental instutions, prisons and other non traditonal places deserves a larger look--as art not as ethnography or pyschology.
