Summer Wages
(Ian Tyson)

Never hit 17 when you play against the dealer
For you know that the odds won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone when your friends are out to steal her
Years are gambled and lost like summer wages.

And we'll keep rollin on'til we get to Vancouver
And the woman that I love who's living there
It's been 6 long months and more since I've seen her
She may be gambled and gone like summer wages.

And all the beer parlors all down along Main Street
The dreams of the seasons are all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber just waiting for falling
And the hustlers sitting watchfully as they wait there by the door.

So I'll work on the towboats In my slippery city shoes
Which I swore I would never do again
Through the worst fogbound straits where the cedars stand watching
I'll be far off and gone like summer wages.

Ah, she's a woman so fine I may never try to find her
For good memories of what we had before
They should never be changed for they're all that I'll take with me
Now I've gambled and lost my summer wages.

Years are gambled and lost like summer wages.

a great article on Louis Armstrong and hsi role in country-his work on Blue Yodel no 9, is so seminal, because it was the start of african music and western music, emerging itno somethign strange and fecund--not rock adn roll, and not blues based in the more traditional sense--its noiser, and yet controls that noise better, and they are almost egging each other on...and it was made in LA, in hollywood in fact, so there is this awarenss of its own theatrical qualities, its own fake cowboy aestyhetic that becomes spectacle, and thats really the beginning of country, the awareness that being a cowboy was as much about the vocal arcobatics as it was about being on a horse (roy rogers, adn gene autry, and the sons of the pioneer all were on tv, and all sang like tehy were tv, and thats cause of rodgers) (and bob willis, the master of western swing, who considered his work more jazz than country, and who has a boxset here, spent 40 years unfolding what he learnt listening to this track, in an almsot quantum level (im not making sense here, i know im not, and will think about the track more and write about it)

some things of note

i find john an impt corrective to my mythmaking of western culture (western as in cowboy), and i find his mind fecund, his manner genorous, and well hes assume

the show is much better seeing it a week later, im pleased with it, and i dont think that thei nterview i did with a journalist from see turned out badly at all (though she is obv attracted to ashley, and well it will be a 90/10 thing...

ashley called me his best friend, which makes a bit uncomfortable, although i love him--we are working on a seires of drawings about the apocolypse, and i feel like for a number of reasons, my ideas are being used, the give and take is something i view as realy impt, and he made new posters, which is even cooler.

had a meeting with marcus, who works as a curator for the AGA, he loved my fotos, liked the serialism of the ikons, listened to me bitch about edmonton, and asked odd questions, one of which was about who was my scene, im about to send an email explaining that, but how i define scene, who i show work to, and who i would work with, is fairly short, but international, it is not contained in one geogrpahical location (because of the web) and it is not limited to culture workers (a partial list: glenys, andrew, blair, ashley, ray, rachel, patrick, danielle, ed, frank, martin, mark, geoff, rainy) (theologian and post-cololinal worker, theologian, installtion artist, musican, graphic designer and collagist, writer, photog, and parts monkey, sculptor, installation artist, queer theorist, comics guru, painter, writer, writer, comics guru, japanese art expert, and writer, writer adn academic, installation artist, photographer) (victoria, vancouver, edmonton, toronto, nashville, detroit, london, toowoomba, dunedin)

four remington sculptures at the aga, and 12 baroque paintings--the 12 baroque paintings include a lage work from ulrecht around the time of the reformation, that was interesting for a few reasons

1) ulrecht is monthly catholic, but from what i understand, holland had as much or worse of an anti-catholic violence as england did, and the work was 12 feet high and 5 feet wide, it was an enoroumous thing....i dont know how it could be used in secretive home churches (english aesthetic objects at this time and place were by and large small, bookworks, etchings, other ephemera)

2) the work was of the annuncation of Marys DEATH, which was something that i never heard of, and didnt realise was possible

3) the work was pretty standard, in its composition, with the concentration in the bottom third, but there was a stream of flowers, in whites, pinks, and blues, oddly femmine, oddly decorative, that were emerging from one corner, in a straight diagonal line, down b/w the angel and the holy mother, thatwas so fascinting

4) remembering anncuations of pregancy, the angel of god is on the left, and mary is on the right, this is opposite...

5) it had an amazing, sevre, egpytian revival frame, in blue black and patinaed gild, gorgeous.

talked to former mayor david crombie, who was kind and wise, and told me over he course of 20 minutes or so, powerful things about the nature and purpose of his kurelek's work , yesterday, with a bunch of juicy qoutes.

talked to art dealer david locke, who told me that it was not proper that he talk about ken thomsons art collection, for no real reason. i know that thomson is dead, but i dont understand why he bought this work over that work woulc be a state secret. he was also pompus.

Drink also featured heavily in the life of George Brown, a Labor foreign secretary in the 1960's, who is once said to have stumblingly invited a guest in flowing purple robes at a reception in Peru to dance. But it was not to be.

"First, you are drunk," the guest is said to have replied. "Second, this is not a waltz; it is the Peruvian national anthem. And third, I am not a woman; I am the Cardinal Archbishop of Lima."

there is a haunting, lovely few fotos of sontag, taken by annie lebowitz, their children, sontag lying in state, and others, in annie's new book and in this issue of newsweek i think
William Kurelek was an outsider artist: he had the mental illness, the geographical isolation, the ethnic worries, the religious obsessiveness, and the monastic, heremtic strangeness expected of people reclaimed as art brut after death. William Kurelek was an insider artist, he was collected by governments, musuems, corperate collections and the industrial elite, his gallerist was among the most famous in Canada, and he was cunning in matters of personae, cash flow, and networking. His work is both cloying and visionary, rural nostalgia and apocolyptic terror, tender and daring. Thinking about the tensions and delicacies of the negotions, and the ambigous efect, 30 years after his death, is to question the very core of outsider status. Writing about this ambigiuty, i am hoping to return him to his proper status: the most important religiosu painter of the 20th century (with the possible exception of Stephen Spenser), and the most improtant canadian artist since Kreigoff.
Thesis

WK is an artist, that by all standards should be considered outsider. He was mentally ill, rural, painted in a vernacular style, was a religous visionary obsessed with the world ending in a nuclear apocolyspe, and had a heremetic, obsessive qaulity that should have been isolating. But he gained wealth, promienece and cannonical status through most ofhis life. His cunning turned the outside, into one of the most important artists in Canadian history. The emergence of an insider fame through outsider methods, implicity critiques contemparary art practice, and ask questiosn about what it means to be an outsider artist.

sven nykist, who made beautiful imagryas a cintemographer for bergman, and then went on to do the hi/lo hollywood shuffle (his hollywood movies are so odd, he worked on the high trash of star 80, a seemy, brilliant, vaseline smeared decadent fosse film, and the quiet devotion of agnes of god, the silly sleepless in seattle, and the sublime oxen (which he also directed), and the unmentionably bad something to talk about)...i think that what he did was be the only egoless man in hollywood, taking his amaznig skill at making movies look good, and sublimated it under either studio or directors attention--his work for bergman looked like bergman should look,. his fosse out fossed fosse, his work on the unberable lightness of being, brought kundera to the front, and made the misogyny of the source text less impt, and he also allowed formans humanism to shine thru...even his work for sleepless made the town seem less desolate, more cozy, more romantic, and he made the empire state scene somehow uncheesy...

note: oxen is incredibly depressing, and difficult to describe, but it is basically abotu the injustice of every day life, about doing the right thing being unrewarded, and that life and death desicons are judged intesnely by civilissation, as bleak as bleak gets, its also one of the best films of the 90s

crombie was the mayor from 1972 onward, so the paitning is late, and he is now at the CUI in toronto
WK

why he is an outsider

1) the mental illness
questions:
spec diagnosis
continued belief
medical or ?
2) the apoclyptica
sales of said work
how late was this done
the bomb shelter, and its commonness, in TO
3) the visonary strangeness
4) the prolifagacy
exact number of paintings, public commisions, prints, tapestries, drawings, et. al
5) ethnic concerns
not really a prarie painter, but his toronto work kind of looks like the beaches?
6) the naive or folk aesthetic
how much of this wasa signuture style, marketable, and not changed?
hos close is this to other, really naive painters, or folk painters in WC or the ukraine?
really quite sophiscated, in formal matters?
7) the use of work as religious or political agit prop or as anti aesthetic, even when it might be better to be politic
david crombie (but then they didnt notice for 10 years?)
is david crombie still alive?
are there other examples, other controversies that emereged about his public commissions?

why he is not an outsider
1) the connections to capital
but he always begged for money, though only one record of grant making
there was tussles about money, that letter in the isaacs collection about drawings for only 700...
and the bank statements, up to the 70s, he was sellign out shows
does capital matter, romance of poverty, etc
2) the placement of his work in promient collections, public spaces, et. al
(from the top of my head AGO, U of A, Winnipeg, Edmonton Galleries, London collections, the national gallery of canada, the collection of the queen mother, moma in ny (and the story of that, about hwo it was the only work being sold there), the thomson collection (the rock, basillian, 12k/a doesnt seem very much)
3) his manipulation of personae
rube, hand written letters, clumsy ukranian, anti semetic, et al
4) his abilty to manipulate the market, his savvy about that
did he do this?
5) the use of biographical narrative to frame himself as naive
see personae, it depends on how much of this was public personae, but the two books for tundra, and the immigrant (polish, uke, irish, jewish) series of prints
6) the connecting to a spec, mostly anglo/northern european (ie not ukranian) tradition of painting and print making
(ie blake, brueghel, bosch, et al--all mentioned in auto bio, etc)

how much of the stonewalling is my inability to be good at this shit, and how much is other general weirdness?

The tribunal says that some pedophile is sane and has no mental
illness. The tribunal must not say that a rape is a
phisiological conduct, entailing no mental illness or disability, and
that pedophilia is not a insane behavior. Also crimes against the
patrimony are not physiological conducts.
A conduct can be pathological (biological group self destructive
activity), or non pathological (phisiological, genetic or non
genetic): no external or middle case is expected.

*****

Enemies and friends: of mental hygiene only. War is a condition
of pathology, a biological group self destructive activity :
doctors don't fight each other, in any conflict almost 1 fighter
is insane. If the police wouldn't chase the bank robbers,
economy of a planet would fall in few days, hospitals close,
children die : war is possible as a less pathological alternative.

Fighting with islam against the devil and mental illness : this
aptitude has no sane alternatives against lethal psychiatric epidemic :
for ignorance and unobservance, kamikaze bombers are enemies of
phisiology, they destroy the operate of their god for non
medical reason, they are agents of devil.

*****

Siegmund Freud lies not knowing to be lying: he is a conceptual
pedophile who says children has sexual attraction for parent
(edipus), and that mind is partitioned in 3 parts (ego superego
es). False premiss brings wrong result: like Freud says, cognitive
error is associated with pathological conduct.

"All fine at home? Do your parents act with you like with
friends? Is your parent clinically perfect? ": the medical doctor
must subministrate this or analogous enhanced suggestion to the
habitants for preventing or for healing, before programming any
other subministration. This is also a method the doctor can use to
investigate if a pathological behavior has environmental or genetic cause.

Earth's habitants kill gays but children arn't born gays,
habitants corrupt and kill children : this non genetic epidemic is
familiarly but not geneticaly transmitted.
Slapping child is a crime and a mania, evidently if child isn't
genetically stupid, handicapped, diseased, socially dangerous,
unable to understand words.

1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and
increase in number ; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the
fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living
creature that moves on the ground."

Christians priests are not fruitful and contradict god : they
are heretics and agents of devil. With baptism christians
forgive themselfs from god's death sentence.

1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the
face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed
in it. They will be yours for food.
1:30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of
the air and all the creatures that move on the ground,
everything that has the breath of life in it, I give every
green plant for food " And it was so.

Chirstians don't eat only green plant : they trust in god to
contradict god. Eating cadavers for non nutritional reason is a
pathological conduct. Like lion is parasite of gazelle, mankind
is parasite of cow, for antinutritional and anticulinary reason :
eating cadavers induce genetic reflex of vomiting.

notes

Pomedli, M., Kurelek’s Huronia Mission Paintings, Canadian Studies vol. 14, Millen Press, 1991.

Rene Goupil is Martyred

Teh paintings is fileld with symbols: goupil's arms stretched out as an a cross; huis innoncen and self surrender, his puleld hair, and hsi dragging the dlogs like Isaac in the Old Testament adn like Jesus carrying the cross to the place of his death his half naked body and leggings in light filled kinship with the slaying Irqouis. the menacing dark trees adn sparse vegetation speak of adobndomemnt. As his paints, Teh Passion of Christ, kurelek etches both innocen adn suffering in blunt and blold reliefg. the depticiton evokes feelings of horror and revealtion... (95)

Kurelek sees the Iroquis, as some Jesuits and other Europeans did, in an oversimplifed manner, as animated soleby by demons. For kurlek, the misioanries are the only holy ones. Thus this terrible and freicous Iroquious is portrayed in the shadows, while an aura of lifht frames Jogues, whit amputed fingered hands, and arms outstretched. the sqaure, white, halo effect, was a common way of chartachtezing living saints in teh early church,. Here Jorgues is reminsecent of the suffered of Psalm 30:14-16 (qoute)
It is nto possible credibly to accept kureleks ocversimplifaction today. there was both virture adn vice on both sides. On the one hand, the Jesuits themselves wrote of the virtious qaulities the natives exhibited. On the other hand, evenio n the early ocntanct peroid, missionaries and other Europeans did native terrotires and cultural patterns... (?)

Kureleks central images, such as the one of Brebeuf here, are not dynamic figurs even though they mayb be portrayed in the stages of action Kuelek often outines his imagesi n black, freezing, and sexuring them as one does in a photogrpah. The artist wants no evancent image, no mixed messages, no greay areas. Kurelek has a persepctive which fixes his paossionite message within a boundary, but cannot delimit the intricaies of commic events nor the complexities of the chaachters involved. Brebeuf;s proporer jesuit training did not prepare him for the scurrilous language he encontred in Huronia...(37)

In 1959, he returned to Toronto and began to acheive commerical success in 1960, with ihs first one person show in the Isaacs Galelry. He married Jean Andrews in 1962, began a family, and completed his six year work on the sieres of 160 paintings: The passion of Chrsit According the St Matthew. Two major often interwoven autobiogrpahical strands predominate in Kureleks paintings, strangs which his Huronia Mission OPaintings share as well:
1) Un affecarted jotyful, playful and even joking themes;
2) Introspective, wistful, violent, unresolved adn seemingly unresovlable issues. Joan murrary charactizes thsi dualism as "innocent nostalgia, apcolyptic cisiion"
Kurelels prariing patings capture the first majoir strand of joyful innocnence. We get an expansive feeling for these fvast landscapesl we are amazed by their reality, by his fresh direct and authentic response...(5)

Kurelek: A Biography. Toronto: Macmillan Canada, 1986.

Cannon remembers:"there were peoids of darkness and...brokenness in him. Its a lifetime work. He personfied the comandment to lvoe God and your neigoubourt, he lived that, adn cant do without pain. Healing is al ifelong thing, not instantious. He touched the worlds pain with Christ. Ave told me hed men crying in front of Bills Paintings"...(12) (Helen Cannon was a friend of WK, before he married Jean Andrew)

Bills religous faith restored his feeling of personal worth and lef him into a community of caring indiviudals where hsi self confience began to grow. His concious mythology was entirely God-centered. He credited God with hsi healing, adn found in his Christian faith a reason for his previous suffering. He saw his paintg as a God-given talent and a means to preachi n the marketyplace. He also saw himself a a kind of eremiah, altohough he never used this term. Firmly expecting both a coming Holocouast and a coming heaven, he waned hsi adueince of aprroaching cataclysm.... (5)

bill was fortunate in having as his promter a young dealer whose own star was rising just as fate brought them together in 1959. For his extrodinaorly rapid rise to promeimnce in the 1960s and 70s., the artis was indeopeted in no small measure to the support of the Issacs Galllery...As for his protest paintings, Issaacs described them as a acant garde at a tiem when fashionable art was abstract adn value free. Such paitnings had their own qaulity of abstraction in the way in which they dissected the surface into som,ple plances. Isaacs stressed that a unifed vision underlies the entire work, no matter what the ubject. There is an itnensity in his paintings which concers all hsi work int a relgiosu act" Thjat intentsity suffeused everything he touched. (7)

Bill's feelign that he was marked for a high destiny is...throughout hsi writings. His strong reaction to reading the life of Van Gigh concludes with his state befielf that out of his suffering he was destined tro produce grweat art. It must have been important to him, his oncidants share that view. In Mexico, during his first trip abroad... (?)

in the rereitten version of hsi autobiography, Bill speaks of goign to to England with two conciosu aims, to further his art school (his phrase is to "complete" it) and to fnid through hositalaztion as for his chronic depression adn inexplicable eye pains. Here, as elsewhere, he oversimplfies. Perhaps he found it less admirable simply to admit that he very much enjoyed travelling...(?)

big interview with E Howard Hunt, a big player in central american anti commmunist activities for most of the 50s to the 70s, its almost nostaligic to read this now, the fear of communism seems almsot quaint. the american operations in gautlemea, among other places, were violent destabilzing, things, but listening to him say things like:

Slate: Some 200,000 civilians were killed in the civil war following the coup, which lasted for the next 40 years. Were all those deaths unforeseen?

Hunt: Deaths? What deaths?

Slate: Well, the civil war that ensued for the next 40 years after the coup.

Hunt: Well, we should have done something we never do—we should have maintained a constant presence in Guatemala after getting rid of Arbenz.

are not the condi era brinksmanship idea, but the long game, pax americana, view of present neo-cons--deaths, what deaths can be framed with bushes torture what torture (esp his recent interview with matt lauer, where he refuses to go off policy points, and looks foolish pressed slightly)

footage of the bush interview

(this is also very funny:

Slate: Did you ever actually meet Jacobo Arbenz?

Hunt: They [he and his wife] were neighbors of mine—years later—on the same street in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Slate: What were you doing there?

Hunt: I was the CIA chief of station.

They had come from [exile in] Czechoslovakia, and nobody in Washington had told me they were coming and so it was a big surprise to me, to my wife and me. We went to the country club for dinner one evening and lo and behold, the Arbenzes were seated a few tables away.

Slate: What did you do?

Hunt: Well, nothing. I sent a cable to Washington saying, "In the future when we have important arrivals, please let me know." It's the least they could do.

eroticises terror, for vogue italia...great images, including this one:

problems with the seires, are the usual left liberal problems of making pretty things that are dangerous, and the femmisnt probelms of staging highly ritualised tabeloux that center around violating women...but the whole seires reminds me the most of Death of Marat, a terrified, despeate plea to make something calm ordered and beautiful otu of a world that seems barely in control...aesthetically framing terror is one more way (and perhaps a safer way) of taking our emotions back...

here is the Death of Marat:

the best thing about buck angel porn, is that he explodes any ideas of sexuality as concrete, he fucks straight men, gay men, straight women, lesbians, ftms, mtfs, post ops, pre ops...his polymorphus sexuality seems fairly common to the edges of performed gender adn sexuality, but he sells a fortune, been nominated for the avn awards, and is handsome, deeply handsome, without being parodic about it--he looks like any folsom street fair(y)...

susie bright talks about this in her blog this week:

the endless twolane blacktop of pain
The CIA calls this mostly innocous:

1. The Attention Grab: The interrogator forcefully grabs the shirt front of the prisoner and shakes him.
2. Attention Slap: An open-handed slap aimed at causing pain and triggering fear.
3. The Belly Slap: A hard open-handed slap to the stomach. The aim is to cause pain, but not internal injury. Doctors consulted advised against using a punch, which could cause lasting internal damage.
4. Long Time Standing: This technique is described as among the most effective. Prisoners are forced to stand, handcuffed and with their feet shackled to an eye bolt in the floor for more than 40 hours. Exhaustion and sleep deprivation are effective in yielding confessions.
5. The Cold Cell: The prisoner is left to stand naked in a cell kept near 50 degrees. Throughout the time in the cell the prisoner is doused with cold water.
6. Water Boarding: The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner’s face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt.

teh last ppgh on that link, about cops, is the core of the matter--and the recent acvitity in banning pseduo porn, written porn, unpleasent porn b.w consenting adults, and uppign obscenity requirements, and using duplicitous means to entrap and arrest people is the dark side of this coin...

and another:

dump, pump, rump, lump, krump, dump

an erotic epic of submission wrestling and gonch pulling

william garnett, a california photographer, who's arieal photographs of the new suburbs of los angeles, are beautiful and scientific discussions of population and how we live now, adn who ahve the same kind of energy as some of he new topographers 10 or 20 years before they did it, is oneof the more under rated american photographers, and one i feel tender towards. he died at the end of august.

here is his bio from the LA times

these three are from the lakewood seires, a narrative of photos of a suburb emerging, from trenching to landscape, now at the getty

Heavily armed men fired their guns in the air as they entered the bar in Uruapan in the central state of Michoacan, said Magdalena Guzman, spokeswoman for the state prosecutor's office. The gunmen ordered patrons to the ground before tossing the heads.

16th century last supper, from lima peru, forget the artist, but the meal in the center is a guinea pig, a tradtional meal of the first nations there. this image hits me, in the same way that our lady of gaudlope hits me, in that christ comes to us as we understand him, he transmorgifies his humanity adn hsi divinity to messages that can be absorbed (this is bullshit in many ways, and we have to be careful, because christ came on the edge of a sword, in the volley of firearms, and in the folds of smallpox ridden blankets, maybe positive examples of the reclamation of xian culture is sugar coating dangerous messages...) (and maybe our lady is a more sophiscated version of the doctorine of constatine)

it also proves that cultures absorb and change the xian message, and 20th century concerns about african masses, folk masses, masses in the vernacular, amsses with dancing, etc etc ar against tradition

1) Does film best tell the truth (Godard) or tell lies (De Palma) at 24 frames per second? (Thanks, Peet)

All fiction tells lies, in order to tell truths. Docs are a little different, but follow the same pattern (ie michael moore telling us bush is evil or errol morris crack at teh redemption of mcnamara)

2) Ideal pairing of actors/actresses to play on-screen siblings
Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds

3) Favorite special effects moment
the zombie mother giving birth to zombie baby in a high end kids clothing store, in the remake of dawn of the dead. (a scene of great perversity and horror, esp how it is shot so tenderly)

4) Matt Damon or George Clooney?
matt damon is the better actor, i think

5) What is the movie you’ve encouraged more people to see than any other?
imitation of life (people dont tend to lvoe it as much as i do)

6) Favorite film of 1934
thin man, cause ive seen it 5 or 6 times, and i have yet to figure out all the lines.

7) Your favorite movie theater
before it died, the paramount in edmonton, also fond of alliance atlantis, the fox, the royal, and the bloor, in toronto. all except AA have old sound, no stadium seating, and acres of plush velvet, my favourite seat, the middle row, center seat, in front of the balcony

8) Jean Arthur or Irene Dunne?
irene dunne, for her majesty in falling apart

9) Favorite film made for children
anything made by disney before 1940 (ie snow white, dumbo, fantasia, pinochio) spirited away, the gene wilder willy wonka, and the misudnerstood and easily forgotten candleshoe (for jodie foster, its comfort in cliches, and how she did all of these strange, difficult, adult work (ie taxi driver, the little girl who lived down the lane, etc etc), and then went back to make a great, fun, low key, and comforting disney movie)

10) Favorite Martin Scorsese Movie
i dont like scorese, as a general rule, adn the work i like of him is usually scenes featuring women. cybil shepered and jodie foster in taxi driver; liza minelli's subtle revealtions in new york new york; aida turtoru as nurse crupp in bringing out the dead; sharon stones white hot eroticism in casino, sandra berhnhard actually avoiding annoying people in king of comedy...

11) Favorite film about children
bully

12) Favorite film of 1954
carmen jones--the closest thing that racist hollywood could do to show how brilliant dorthy dandrige was, adn one of the best otto preminger films

13) Favorite screenplay written by a writer more famous for literature than screenplays
Sartes screenplay for the Freud biopic. An anti-freudian writes for a twisted homosexual, obsessed with his own masculinity, a role that has nothing much to do with the subject's real lfie

14) Walter Matthau or Jack Lemmon?
Lemmon, for some reason, i can forgive his sentimentality

15) Favorite character name
augustus gloop

16) Favorite screenplay adapted from a work of great literature, either by the author himself or by someone else
brokeback, i think--cause the lacuane, the edges of unreal, the long slow pace, and the sadness of geographical isolation all are mantained (also basil rathborne as sherlock)

17) Favorite film of 1974
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (i could talk about this using high theory terms, but sometimes goign to the movies is about dark things happening in dark places) (taking of pentham 1,2,3 is one of the better directed movies of the 70s, and its breakneck pace, and its claustrophobia belong here as well)

18) Joan Severance or Shannon Tweed?
Can i choose Steve Reeves?

19) jackass: the movie-- yes or no?
1970s body art stripped of abjection, restored to its proper hi/trash bdsm place, god yes

20) Favorite John Cassavetes Movie
The Killing of A Chinese Bookie or Gloria (though thats my favourite gena rowlands film)

21) First R-rated movie you ever saw
i dont even remember, maybe the birds?

22) Favorite X-rated film (remember that, while your answer may well be a famous or not-so-famous hard-core film, the "X" rating was once also a legitimate rating that did not necessarily connote pornography)
midnight cowboy, pink narcissus, beyond the green door

23) Best film of 1994
either the lion king or the professional (ive decided i really like the lion king, mostly for its violence, and genuine menance, and its lack of misogyny, i could do without large swathes of it, but certain segments, the stampede, mufasa, the hyenas, keep getting to me) (i thot heavenly creatures was released in 1993, but it wasnt, and the two performances make the folie a deux shockingly real, without being voyueristic)

24) Describe a moment in a movie that made you weep
bunch of toronto hipsters, my friends and i, broke back mountain, im albertan, and i try to keep it together, despeately, but it gets worse and worse, i start sniffling, no kleenex, go to the bathroom, come back, and than the last 15 mintues, im jsut weeping, racked with tears, like someone in my family had died, and than the lgiths come up, and all of these queens come and stare at me, like i had done something gauche. growing up queer in the west, and dealing with the violence there in, combined with my lasting fear of being alone, and of being isolated in general, adn ahving to go back there though my family was in toronto, due to money and the complications of geography, hit it way to close home...

(i also wept at any of the sirk films in school, and todd haynes far from heaven, in addition to the prize winner of defiance ohio, and any larger amount of trash...i overemote in cinemas)

25) Ewan McGregor or Ewan Bremner?
McGregor

26) One of your favorite line readings (not necessarily one of your favorite lines) from this or any year
this year, jeremey stratham in the transporter two, playing the riddle game with the main tyke, before the action starts, or the last line of the film has that brsque butch masculinity, analysed and restored, that i enjoyed immensley.
any year--liz taylor in cleopatra (christ, liz taylor anywhere)

27) What, if any, element in a film, upon your hearing of its inclusion beforehand, would most likely prejudice you against seeing that film or keeping an open mind about it?
i would assume violence for the sake of violence, the porongraphic violence kael wrote against in dirty hairy, but i have found my self liking it's more slick forms, in hong kong, and neo hong kongs that ive watched in the last year or so means that if its pretty enough ill gobble it up...which worries me. (american procedual television, ugly, vapid, with a sour belief in the glories of the states, and performances that are somewhere left of automatic, where all sex is punished by death, is the work that i often dismiss immidately though)

28) Favorite Terry Gilliam Movie
The documentary abotu his failure to direct Quixote

29) Jean Smart or Annie Potts?
Jean Smart (for that scene, about astronauts and ballerieas, in the god awful kid movie with bruce willis)

30) Is it possible to know with any certainty if you could like or love someone based partially on their taste in movies? If so, what film might be a potential relationship deal-breaker for you, or the one that might just seal that deal?
they gotta love trash and art and hollywood and france and everywhere else--thats the thing, an unwillingness to see crank the same weekend as cache would be a deal breaker

To the Editor:

Dave Itzkoff’s review of Julie Phillips’s “James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon” (Aug. 20) has shown your readers a fragment of the conundrum that was Alice Sheldon, but could have shed far more light on that enigmatic author. Perhaps I can help. I was a friend of Sheldon and her second husband for the last 13 years of their lives (dating from well before the truth about James Tiptree was exposed).

Itzkoff correctly notes that Sheldon was a C.I.A. agent (though he neglects to mention that Huntington Sheldon, her husband, was with the agency as well). In fact, it was during her three years there that Sheldon learned how to create a false identity, including how to acquire the Social Security number she used as “James Tiptree,” thus ensuring that Tiptree’s royalty checks could never be traced to her.

Itzkoff’s review implies that Alice’s suicide was mandated by the mercy killing of her husband; she was technically guilty of Huntington’s murder. The truth is more complicated. Ting Sheldon was in constant pain, but with no imminent hope of natural death when Alice shot him dead, phoned her lawyer with instructions to notify the police, then shot herself while holding hands with her beloved husband. In a 1980 interview (published in Charles Platt’s “Dream Makers”), Sheldon revealed that she had struggled against suicidal urges since her childhood. The handwritten suicide note found beside her corpse in 1987 had been written years earlier; she had carefully saved it until she was ready to use it.

From the NY Times
There is something so incredible about these two stories, so difficult to parse, the instabilty of personal idenitity. the construction of self, and sheer self control, that one chooses the time of ones death, with careful precision

(the new bio looks amazing, and its getting ltos of buzz, first sf book to be on the cover, notices in book forum, publishers weekly, etc--story too good for it to be true, maybe we will get more tiptree in print)
