a great article on Louis Armstrong and hsi role in country-his work on Blue Yodel no 9, is so seminal, because it was the start of african music and western music, emerging itno somethign strange and fecund--not rock adn roll, and not blues based in the more traditional sense--its noiser, and yet controls that noise better, and they are almost egging each other on...and it was made in LA, in hollywood in fact, so there is this awarenss of its own theatrical qualities, its own fake cowboy aestyhetic that becomes spectacle, and thats really the beginning of country, the awareness that being a cowboy was as much about the vocal arcobatics as it was about being on a horse (roy rogers, adn gene autry, and the sons of the pioneer all were on tv, and all sang like tehy were tv, and thats cause of rodgers) (and bob willis, the master of western swing, who considered his work more jazz than country, and who has a boxset here, spent 40 years unfolding what he learnt listening to this track, in an almsot quantum level (im not making sense here, i know im not, and will think about the track more and write about it)

i find john an impt corrective to my mythmaking of western culture (western as in cowboy), and i find his mind fecund, his manner genorous, and well hes assume
the show is much better seeing it a week later, im pleased with it, and i dont think that thei nterview i did with a journalist from see turned out badly at all (though she is obv attracted to ashley, and well it will be a 90/10 thing...
ashley called me his best friend, which makes a bit uncomfortable, although i love him--we are working on a seires of drawings about the apocolypse, and i feel like for a number of reasons, my ideas are being used, the give and take is something i view as realy impt, and he made new posters, which is even cooler.
had a meeting with marcus, who works as a curator for the AGA, he loved my fotos, liked the serialism of the ikons, listened to me bitch about edmonton, and asked odd questions, one of which was about who was my scene, im about to send an email explaining that, but how i define scene, who i show work to, and who i would work with, is fairly short, but international, it is not contained in one geogrpahical location (because of the web) and it is not limited to culture workers (a partial list: glenys, andrew, blair, ashley, ray, rachel, patrick, danielle, ed, frank, martin, mark, geoff, rainy) (theologian and post-cololinal worker, theologian, installtion artist, musican, graphic designer and collagist, writer, photog, and parts monkey, sculptor, installation artist, queer theorist, comics guru, painter, writer, writer, comics guru, japanese art expert, and writer, writer adn academic, installation artist, photographer) (victoria, vancouver, edmonton, toronto, nashville, detroit, london, toowoomba, dunedin)
four remington sculptures at the aga, and 12 baroque paintings--the 12 baroque paintings include a lage work from ulrecht around the time of the reformation, that was interesting for a few reasons
1) ulrecht is monthly catholic, but from what i understand, holland had as much or worse of an anti-catholic violence as england did, and the work was 12 feet high and 5 feet wide, it was an enoroumous thing....i dont know how it could be used in secretive home churches (english aesthetic objects at this time and place were by and large small, bookworks, etchings, other ephemera)
2) the work was of the annuncation of Marys DEATH, which was something that i never heard of, and didnt realise was possible
3) the work was pretty standard, in its composition, with the concentration in the bottom third, but there was a stream of flowers, in whites, pinks, and blues, oddly femmine, oddly decorative, that were emerging from one corner, in a straight diagonal line, down b/w the angel and the holy mother, thatwas so fascinting
4) remembering anncuations of pregancy, the angel of god is on the left, and mary is on the right, this is opposite...
5) it had an amazing, sevre, egpytian revival frame, in blue black and patinaed gild, gorgeous.

talked to former mayor david crombie, who was kind and wise, and told me over he course of 20 minutes or so, powerful things about the nature and purpose of his kurelek's work , yesterday, with a bunch of juicy qoutes.
talked to art dealer david locke, who told me that it was not proper that he talk about ken thomsons art collection, for no real reason. i know that thomson is dead, but i dont understand why he bought this work over that work woulc be a state secret. he was also pompus.
so the 1 off 1 on pattern continues.
i also have a small peice (300 wds) on Eric Dorienger's bootleges published by Soma in November.

William Kurelek was an outsider artist: he had the mental illness, the geographical isolation, the ethnic worries, the religious obsessiveness, and the monastic, heremtic strangeness expected of people reclaimed as art brut after death. William Kurelek was an insider artist, he was collected by governments, musuems, corperate collections and the industrial elite, his gallerist was among the most famous in Canada, and he was cunning in matters of personae, cash flow, and networking. His work is both cloying and visionary, rural nostalgia and apocolyptic terror, tender and daring. Thinking about the tensions and delicacies of the negotions, and the ambigous efect, 30 years after his death, is to question the very core of outsider status. Writing about this ambigiuty, i am hoping to return him to his proper status: the most important religiosu painter of the 20th century (with the possible exception of Stephen Spenser), and the most improtant canadian artist since Kreigoff.

sven nykist, who made beautiful imagryas a cintemographer for bergman, and then went on to do the hi/lo hollywood shuffle (his hollywood movies are so odd, he worked on the high trash of star 80, a seemy, brilliant, vaseline smeared decadent fosse film, and the quiet devotion of agnes of god, the silly sleepless in seattle, and the sublime oxen (which he also directed), and the unmentionably bad something to talk about)...i think that what he did was be the only egoless man in hollywood, taking his amaznig skill at making movies look good, and sublimated it under either studio or directors attention--his work for bergman looked like bergman should look,. his fosse out fossed fosse, his work on the unberable lightness of being, brought kundera to the front, and made the misogyny of the source text less impt, and he also allowed formans humanism to shine thru...even his work for sleepless made the town seem less desolate, more cozy, more romantic, and he made the empire state scene somehow uncheesy...

Rene Goupil is Martyred
Teh paintings is fileld with symbols: goupil's arms stretched out as an a cross; huis innoncen and self surrender, his puleld hair, and hsi dragging the dlogs like Isaac in the Old Testament adn like Jesus carrying the cross to the place of his death his half naked body and leggings in light filled kinship with the slaying Irqouis. the menacing dark trees adn sparse vegetation speak of adobndomemnt. As his paints, Teh Passion of Christ, kurelek etches both innocen adn suffering in blunt and blold reliefg. the depticiton evokes feelings of horror and revealtion... (95)
Kurelek sees the Iroquis, as some Jesuits and other Europeans did, in an oversimplifed manner, as animated soleby by demons. For kurlek, the misioanries are the only holy ones. Thus this terrible and freicous Iroquious is portrayed in the shadows, while an aura of lifht frames Jogues, whit amputed fingered hands, and arms outstretched. the sqaure, white, halo effect, was a common way of chartachtezing living saints in teh early church,. Here Jorgues is reminsecent of the suffered of Psalm 30:14-16 (qoute)
It is nto possible credibly to accept kureleks ocversimplifaction today. there was both virture adn vice on both sides. On the one hand, the Jesuits themselves wrote of the virtious qaulities the natives exhibited. On the other hand, evenio n the early ocntanct peroid, missionaries and other Europeans did native terrotires and cultural patterns... (?)
Kureleks central images, such as the one of Brebeuf here, are not dynamic figurs even though they mayb be portrayed in the stages of action Kuelek often outines his imagesi n black, freezing, and sexuring them as one does in a photogrpah. The artist wants no evancent image, no mixed messages, no greay areas. Kurelek has a persepctive which fixes his paossionite message within a boundary, but cannot delimit the intricaies of commic events nor the complexities of the chaachters involved. Brebeuf;s proporer jesuit training did not prepare him for the scurrilous language he encontred in Huronia...(37)
In 1959, he returned to Toronto and began to acheive commerical success in 1960, with ihs first one person show in the Isaacs Galelry. He married Jean Andrews in 1962, began a family, and completed his six year work on the sieres of 160 paintings: The passion of Chrsit According the St Matthew. Two major often interwoven autobiogrpahical strands predominate in Kureleks paintings, strangs which his Huronia Mission OPaintings share as well:
1) Un affecarted jotyful, playful and even joking themes;
2) Introspective, wistful, violent, unresolved adn seemingly unresovlable issues. Joan murrary charactizes thsi dualism as "innocent nostalgia, apcolyptic cisiion"
Kurelels prariing patings capture the first majoir strand of joyful innocnence. We get an expansive feeling for these fvast landscapesl we are amazed by their reality, by his fresh direct and authentic response...(5)

Cannon remembers:"there were peoids of darkness and...brokenness in him. Its a lifetime work. He personfied the comandment to lvoe God and your neigoubourt, he lived that, adn cant do without pain. Ave told me hed men crying in front of Bills Paintings"...(12) (Helen Cannon was a friend of WK, before he married Jean Andrew)
Bills religous faith restored his feeling of personal worth and lef him into a community of caring indiviudals where hsi self confience began to grow. His concious mythology was entirely God-centered. He credited God with hsi healing, adn found in his Christian faith a reason for his previous suffering. He saw his paintg as a God-given talent and a means to preachi n the marketyplace. He also saw himself a a kind of eremiah, altohough he never used this term. Firmly expecting both a coming Holocouast and a coming heaven, he waned hsi adueince of aprroaching cataclysm.... (5)
bill was fortunate in having as his promter a young dealer whose own star was rising just as fate brought them together in 1959. For his extrodinaorly rapid rise to promeimnce in the 1960s and 70s., the artis was indeopeted in no small measure to the support of the Issacs Galllery...As for his protest paintings, Issaacs described them as a acant garde at a tiem when fashionable art was abstract adn value free. Such paitnings had their own qaulity of abstraction in the way in which they dissected the surface into som,ple plances. Isaacs stressed that a unifed vision underlies the entire work, no matter what the ubject. There is an itnensity in his paintings which concers all hsi work int a relgiosu act" Thjat intentsity suffeused everything he touched. (7)
Bill's feelign that he was marked for a high destiny is...throughout hsi writings. His strong reaction to reading the life of Van Gigh concludes with his state befielf that out of his suffering he was destined tro produce grweat art. It must have been important to him, his oncidants share that view. In Mexico, during his first trip abroad... (?)
in the rereitten version of hsi autobiography, Bill speaks of goign to to England with two conciosu aims, to further his art school (his phrase is to "complete" it) and to fnid through hositalaztion as for his chronic depression adn inexplicable eye pains. Here, as elsewhere, he oversimplfies. Perhaps he found it less admirable simply to admit that he very much enjoyed travelling...(?)

(i also wept at any of the sirk films in school, and todd haynes far from heaven, in addition to the prize winner of defiance ohio, and any larger amount of trash...i overemote in cinemas)

i would assume violence for the sake of violence, the porongraphic violence kael wrote against in dirty hairy, but i have found my self liking it's more slick forms, in hong kong, and neo hong kongs that ive watched in the last year or so means that if its pretty enough ill gobble it up...which worries me. (american procedual television, ugly, vapid, with a sour belief in the glories of the states, and performances that are somewhere left of automatic, where all sex is punished by death, is the work that i often dismiss immidately though)

Dave Itzkoff’s review of Julie Phillips’s “James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon” (Aug. 20) has shown your readers a fragment of the conundrum that was Alice Sheldon, but could have shed far more light on that enigmatic author. Perhaps I can help. I was a friend of Sheldon and her second husband for the last 13 years of their lives (dating from well before the truth about James Tiptree was exposed).
Itzkoff correctly notes that Sheldon was a C.I.A. agent (though he neglects to mention that Huntington Sheldon, her husband, was with the agency as well). In fact, it was during her three years there that Sheldon learned how to create a false identity, including how to acquire the Social Security number she used as “James Tiptree,” thus ensuring that Tiptree’s royalty checks could never be traced to her.
Itzkoff’s review implies that Alice’s suicide was mandated by the mercy killing of her husband; she was technically guilty of Huntington’s murder. The truth is more complicated. Ting Sheldon was in constant pain, but with no imminent hope of natural death when Alice shot him dead, phoned her lawyer with instructions to notify the police, then shot herself while holding hands with her beloved husband. In a 1980 interview (published in Charles Platt’s “Dream Makers”), Sheldon revealed that she had struggled against suicidal urges since her childhood. The handwritten suicide note found beside her corpse in 1987 had been written years earlier; she had carefully saved it until she was ready to use it.
