Across the golden plains of Nebraska
In bounding glory drunk on wine and youth
Approach three lads, and An'thny in mask, a
small marsupial baring, just, a tooth
The boys, all strapping strong and bronze with sun,
Now loosed from labors turn with brightened eyes
Upon the prospects of night not begun
Aching of arms and breath, thrusting of thighs
In rows of corn, chest high and kernel rich,
And watched with furtive glee by faux wombat,
The trinity tumbles through hedge and ditch
A verse from some Midwestern Rubaiyat
Not ten miles from Omaha is this:
A masque of red state dappled farmboy bliss.

Police now say an argument caused a 21-year-old man to jump from a moving truck in South Jordan. Poulson, who recently returned from an LDS mission, threatened to get out of the truck if he continued. One of the men, not thinking he would, told Poulson to. Earlier police said the car was going about 35 miles an hour when Poulson opened the door and jumped. He was pronounced dead on scene. From The Salt Lake Tribune

this is what i want to say, in 20 words
1) there were a whole bunch of texts that analysed the myths of the west in the 70s (ie 1966 to 1977)
2) these myths realised the history of the western, and also realised the history of the west, and were interested in that disconnect
3) one of these texts was willie nelsons red headed stranger
willie nelsons red headed stranger is interesting in a number of ways
a) it is aware of the musical forms it uses, and those forms are historically connected to the west.
b) it ties to a wide variety of narrative forms popular in (north) america, esp. balladry
c) it is a refuting of his past life in nashville
d) it is part of a large crowd of musicians that talk about this sort of thing at the same time
4) how this group worked as a free floating collective fed into the album, and into that deconstruction, and has been overlooked by mainstream reportage.
5) The other thing that makes it about the deconstructed west, is the feelings it imparts--the restlessness, the lonlienss, the violence, the isolation, the temparory and rare comforts.
Defining Deconstructed West:
west vs d/c west:
the west is mannifest destiny, its unbridled oppurtinity (sp), its violence as a means to an end, a maintaning of heroics, a belief that this expriment would result in order.
the d/c west is isolation, failure, wrestlessness, random violence, anti heros or no heros, and chaos.
the red headed stranger even as a title works that perfectly. cain always in christian iconography has red hair, cain's curse was to wander thru the wilderness looking for family and order--he can never find it, his being a stranger is permanant (sp)

the proposal is kicking my ass, and the curratorial thing is on the line until until ashley/blair give me materials.

jones av. took tilda for publication next year
i think i have to wait till feb. for flak to talk to me about julians review
here is mine of the new chesney (which ended up on the front page finally--and is fairly strong wason the front page--i am feeling this weird rivally w. thomas inskeep, who also does country for stylus.
the shrink i was going to so i could be evaulated yesterday didnt bother showing up, b/c of some scheduling fuck up--which means i have to see them in the next little while...
i went for a walk yesterday, a long one, and when i got home mom had spent 45 or 50 minutes calling everyone she knew, afraid that i was missing.
shes doing the weird shit with money again--i have no idea where it goes, because i really dont spend that much of it, and there is this sense of constant guilt--i blew off an interview at mac's two days ago, but he hasnt rescheduled, and i havent had any other oppurtunity...
i am working on an essay comparing complusary hetrosexauality in mr/mrs smith and broke back mountain...which is a deep cliche but may get me something.
still 30 pts either direction for the ACT
i need a vacation

i dont think that jake and ennis are closeted, and i think their wives know--and i think that figuring out what is allowed and what isnt, what is adultery is and what it isnt, and what sex b/w men means is the impotant thing here--eve kolsvosky sedgewick talked about the transparent closet, adn how being closeted, was not a dichtomoy, but like everything else w. untraditional sexuality a series of rituals of disclosure...the rituals now are codifired, then they were not.
reading some recent things about broke back mountain
this comes from esquire this week
...the movie, for all its candor and pignacy, isnt fundamentally abut a gay realtionship ; its about teh absence of one ....Ledger and Gyellenhall cowpokes wind up deeply closeted, married with children, loenly and miserable, meeting only every few years for "fishing experditions" Their love affair remians tragically unfufillied..." M ike D' Angelo
From ABC Australia
"Like, these aren't, in my belief, these aren't two, like gay guys. These are two people who fall in love. And, you know, from the environment that they're in, which is incredibly lonely, and, you know, they find each other." Jake
From Details, next month:
"My character could have been played by a woman and it would have made just as much sense," he says), but I'm astonished when he says that he doesn't believe Ennis and Jack are gay. "I approached the story believing that these are actually straight guys who fall in love," he says. "That's how I related to the material. These are two straight guys who develop this love, this bond. Love binds you, and you see these guys pulling and pulling and tugging and trying to figure out what they want, and what they will allow themselves to have." Both via Andy Towel
from Andy himself
I think he's probably not articulating his point very well in either interview, that this is a universal love story. For anyone who has read the book or seen the film can tell you, it's unabashedly gay whether that was the way they chose to define it back then or not.
From Commentator Lieland
Oh, Jesus Fucking Christ! Snap out of it! You pathetic Marys, willing to overlook any stupid ass thing a pretty boy says. It doesn't matter what the CHARACTERS thought it was in terms of labels. We're talking about what JG said about them and it's a crock of shit to say they're not at least bisexual. Millions of straight men over the ages have been stuck temporarily in lonely circumstances and they didn't even touch each other let alone kiss, suck, fuck, or whatever else we're to imagine these two did. It's not like they're in prison for life or trapped together on a desert island with no pussy in site. I'll withdraw "sad" and submit PATHETIC. Pathetic that a young, politically liberal actor in 2005 is obviously so worried about catching something from a FICTIONAL character that he was PAID to PRETEND to be--despite the crap about being flattered that some think he's bi--BI!! He can't even say "think I'm gay"--which we all know is the rumor/fantasy. Mother of God, who gossips about somebody being "bi" except sorority girls from low rent colleges? Applaud him for doing the role, but don't excuse him for effectively trying to rewrite it post facto--the linguistic equivalent of "Boy, was I drunk last night!"
From Me:
There are three eqautions here: Jake and Ennis, Jake and His Wife, Ennis and his wife. They both have children. They both have desires, for each other, for their wives, for their children. The film and the story are about negotioing and navagating what happens in realtionships. They are not deteremined, they are not fufilled, we learn to settle for what we have,, instead of what we want--and the sexuaility in the movies are all about that, are all about what happens in those negitions, the power, the struggles and the desires. It is about how marriages work, and adultery work, and how sex between men works, and its about at the heart what we do to those with whom we love.
Jake Gyllenhall is right here--and i am not making it universal, because men fucking each other will always be queer (except in the movie, and in the book, there is the line b/w them:i dont want you to think im queer or nothing") What is strong about it is that we dont live with the labels, we live in the or nothing and not the queer.
Like Mr and Mrs Smith, the movie is about the anxiety of the heterosexual man, about negoting ever limiting and califcing masculitny, about finding gender and sex roles that work, as opposed to what is perscribed--and it isnt about Jakes personal life--though he does suggest that he is as ambigous as his charachter, which is nice.

its mostly been links here, and qoutes, and vapidness, some art stuff, some celeb, little politics. what do you say about pictures like this:

see dozens more here: as evi
or video like this :
that is white phoshrous, banned before vietnam as a cruel chemical weapon, one that makes people BURN ALIVE
Or
PUT PEOPLE IN LITERAL LION'S DENS or pretend to kill them in firing lines
or have secret prisions in at least three contients...and fly people secrety there--so they can be tortured...
and sometimes actually crucify people--i can find the link in a second.
and then on the other side--we have people blowing up churches, markets, subways, mosques--people stoning women who are not dressed correctly, throwing walls on homosexuals, saying all of the old dangerous lies about the jews, and i can find links for all of them but they are on the front of yr paper--
and the worst thing, the worst fuckign thing (aside from the fact that i can not due anything about it at all) is that the muslims call on allah, through momahmmed, who was supposed to bring enlightenment and peace, and the christians commit the same violence that was committed on them 2000 years ago--we have not made any progress SINCE THE ROMANS.
i understand i think, for the first time in my life, the idea of breads and circuses, the idea that reading about matt damon and roni horn actually means i can get out of bed in the morning...and thinking of myself is of course selfish

I'm staying on my knees as I relate another kind of body-part symphony, one involving more ritualistic wee-wee-ing than at the old Mineshaft. At Bronx Community College, they recently filmed a "Skull and Bones" fraternity initiation scene for The Good Shepherd, which is about the early (and apparently very earthy) days of the CIA. According to an extra, MATT DAMON ended up in a giant pit of mud with five other actors, who dropped their flesh-colored thongs, though Matt discreetly (and probably contractually) kept his on. A high point came when Matt wrestled one of the naked men in the muck as the paid extras egged them on. When things couldn't get any more extraordinary, an assistant director yelled, "Cue the pee!"—no, I have no idea—which led to a yellowish flow from the rafters, complete with much behind-the-scenes fussing about the velocity and trajectory of the liquid (coming from plastic bottles, thankfully) onto the moshpit. I hear Bronx Community is now officially called Pee U.

Dan Flavin and Roni Horn Untitled (Yes) installation view, Pulitizer Soc. Of Contemparary Arts, St Louis.
i know Horn mostly by the photo conceptual works, but her minimalist sculptures and innovation in material intriuge (she has an 8 foot by 4 foot by 4 foot one in bright red shown in NY at the moment..) Having both of these works feel each other out in Ando's concerete musuem, both estranges and contextualizes materialism

heres a link, cause the photo doesnt seem to work
its awesome

A long-awaited Vatican document says practicing gays, those with "deeply rooted" homosexual tendencies or those who support gay culture cannot be admitted to the priesthood, an Italian newspaper reported Friday.
story here so, they are getting rid of any dissent what-so-ever...as well as any fags. i havent read the document yet.
Transcript of Scott McEllen's press conference about Tortue--i saw this live, and its amazing, he kept being asked the same question and kept not answering them, more then two dozen times they bobbed and weaved, read the transcript.
an article about one of those operations that kidnaps children and sends them away, in a tough love way to teach them to be better. Not only does it not make anything better, they are filled with facists who cause as much harm as they can, phyiscally, pyschologically, and personally. Tough Love is Bad Parenting. This spec. example features a man who "He has chased kids down. He has dragged teens to the car in their underwear. He has used a choke hold, learned as a cop, to render a few others unconscious. He has taken suicidal kids from hospital treatment to reform school." for staying out past 9, for smoking some dope, for not doing well in school, normal rebellious teenage shit.

Eric Doeringer is a m,ulti media artist working on themes of authourship, celebertiy and claiming...one of his projects is making 4x4 copies of much hyped and famous paintgs--then selling those paintings in sites close to the art machine (on the street near galleries, outside the entrance to art fairs, etc.) His work has gotten him a fair amount of succuess, but also some jelousy. He recently got arrested after a (v. medicore) chelsea galleriest called the police on him...
here is james wagner on the mess : from his blog
here is eric doeringer on the mess look thru the site for the work on question
here is the gallery that caused the mess i would recommend emailing mr weiss and suggest what he can do with his lake of taste...(Gasogian, Andrea Rosen, Barbra Gladstone and Metro Pictures--all bigger and more important then Mike Weiss encourage and enjoy Doeringer's work.)

At one charismatic megachurch, staff pastors successfully convinced all their wives and female staff members to get breast implants. (I wonder: Was this discussed at a staff meeting?)
A church in California (known for its revival meetings and prophetic ministry) recently imploded after members learned that several men in the church had been having homosexual affairs with the pastor, who was married.
A leader with an international following (who wears the label of “apostle”) recently informed his leaders that men of God who reach his level of anointing are allowed to have more than one sexual partner. Then his own son offered his wife to his father out of a sense of spiritual obligation.
From Charisma Time magazine for Pentecostals..if anyone knows the churches, send em along... (the article is the usual sex negative homophobia, devil made me do it shit, not concentrating on the power imbalances found in these churches that extend to the lay(pun intended)

From Modern Art Notes (Saltz is a VV critic, Tyler Green is the blogger at MAN)
Jerry Saltz: Very few artists have 30-year careers. Tyler Green: Way few. Partial list of American artists with consistent, ongoing 30-year careers: Johns, Rauschenberg, Twombly, Stella, Celmins, Eggleston, Thiebaud, Andre... (from Modern Art Notes)
I disagree with his choices:
Johns--we can exclude the 10 years of hatch work paintings from the 70s--his work is not consistent at all.
Rauschenberg--For Sure.
Twombly--Of Course.
Celmins--not on my list, but u nderstandable.
Eggleston--could i argue with this one...
Ones hes missing (since almost everyone on that list is a white male...)
Ed Ruscha
Richard Prince
Paul McCarthy
Jenny Holzer
Robert Bechtle
Kiki Smith
Faith Ringgold
David Hockney
Nam Jain Paik
Yoko Ono
I realise that some of these could not be considered american, and the time line might be a bit funny, and i agree wtih his central point, but the ones he left out seem political.

It reminds me of Meret Oppienheims x ray self portraits from the mid 60s...there is a whole page of them here:
including two films
NASCAR Harlequin
The CIA has been hiding and interrogating some of its most important al Qaeda captives at a Soviet-era compound in Eastern Europe, according to U.S. and foreign officials familiar with the arrangement. (washington post)
the good money is that these prisons are either in Rumania or Poland--I was talking to ray last night, and it was weird, hte question we approached was what would the effects on the EU be, no worry about the horror of secret prisions, tortue, etc etc esp. in countries outside american laws and pervues---for me the horror is so assumed that i guess the realpolitik consquences are more worth sorting, but i worry that idont spend enough time outraged and too much time playing other games...
the anger doesnt stay though and what else can be said about american imperial tendecies...
speaking of that---these photos from a Seattle Area Womens Correctional Facilty are about an innovative program that allows Mothers to parent their children inside the prisions, some of the captions are too friendly, and some of it downplays the difficluties and hardness of the prisoners lives, but they are there, as mothers and as prisoners, and to document that, needs to be done...what would be better i think, is giving the cameras to the prisoners themselves, and the print them in colour . but it is v. much worth it.
on the same note juvies at facilities throught the US ...done by a long frame 8x10, the pictures are more effective in their juxtoposition of tradtional studo portratiriue and locational veritee. The other interesting thing is how they name the correctional faccilities (Oakridge School, Green Hill, Maple Lane) most of these prisoners are urban, these are not schools they are jails, why are they naming after the pastoralism of middle class suburbs?
and Mike Schvartz from Tyco, about to go to prison...i bet more worthy of it then most of the people in the above two links..,
One of the things we need to understand about Genocide is that it is not about the killing of bodies but about the elimanting of cultures--Turks arresting Kurds for disobeying a langague law in Street Protests continues the explicitness of the destructon of Kurd Culture story here
Speaking of Langauge--an article from the Central European Review about swearing in Yugoslav (favourites include Jebem vam boga (Fuck Yr God) and Ni vreden pol kurca! (you ain't worth half a cock) and any number of them that feature communists.
Matthew Mullins, teaches philosophy, and is a pretentious ass--yes this is a Wittengenstein JAck o Lattern

This Hippo Roller is the reason why designers should exist--i'll jsut read the catalog copy:
Millions of people worldwide are forced to walk long distances on a daily basis to collect their water requirements for the day. Traditional methods of collecting water include the use of 20-liter (5-gallon) buckets, which are laboriously carried on the head. Extensive suffering occurs in the process. This method is very time and energy consuming and is also the cause of many serious health problems. The Hippo Water Roller was specifically designed to alleviate the suffering caused by a lack of access to water. The Hippo Water Roller is a barrel-shaped container designed to transport 90 liters (20 gallons) of water. It comprises of a drum with a large screw-on cap and a clip-on steel handle. The drum is manufactured from UV stabilized Polyethylene and has been designed to withstand typical rural conditions such as uneven footpaths, rocks and even broken bottles. The large opening (135 mm / 5.3 inch diameter) allows for easy filling and cleaning of the interior. The sealed lid ensures hygienic storage of water and the steel handle provides firm control over difficult terrain while pushing or pulling the roller. Simple, Ingenious solution, to prevent harm and provide clean water--fucking amazing.
The New Yorker writes about Scooter Libby doing bad historical erotica, which seems to be a republican habit (buckley, ginghrich, lynne cheney...) story here
Aussie John Walker Lindh type talks of his abuse at the hands of Americans in Cuba--including various anal games (there is an essay to be written about the recent obsession for anal sex in america these days)
These are images
from a large, surreal, mural about utopia and dystopia, done by the Japanese Super Flatter Chiho Aoshima, the utopia and dystopia work as a sort of narrative reflection on the rise and fall of empires, and of the aesthetic nature of cities, its beautiful, wounding, difficult and all encompassing, having them in the NY Subway System makes them metacontextual as well, analyisis and creation in the place of insipration. it took balls, but im glad they did it (see the wall panels, in the last image, they have large chunx of text explaining it all as well !!) (also note that the panels are of paper and panel, easily transferable and easily put up, wheat glue graifftiable in its history)
(see all of them here and the rest of nyc subway art as well
Lesbian Methodist defroked by a national council last week.
five things to say about this:
1) almost none of this sort of thing goes to a national council--the real consquence(s) of the fight about gay marriage and gay clergy in protestant sects are not about letting fags in, but of making a central authority powerful, which seems to be a violation of the central protestant ethic of decentralaztaion.
2) it was not entirely decided, some of the national council were suposicouly absent, and some voted in favour of her, this is not a runaway desciion against queer clergy
3) it saddens me that even playing the game, even basically marrying and living with the same partner will not save you when the worst comes.
4) the way the rule came down from the conference a few years ago "self-avowed, practicing homosexual" is pretty common way of phrasing these things (ie LDS, Southern Baptist, Anglicans, Presprtyians(sp), The AOG) have almost exact langauge saying the same thing and prevents interperation. it also provides a weird double bind, can you be out and not practive, is self avowing always practicing, is practicing sexuality all about practicing sex?
5) It also means that if they did not want to defrock her, they would have had to say that the rule was unjust (and by extenstion) unchrist like), which is outside of their prevue.

i need to do the install tonite, and i have no idea how and i think that jeff will help me. Terry was going to, but he has kids and other commitments. Jeff apparently is my home teacher, according to Terry. I did ask Jeff, but the weird thing is, that i didnt mind asking terry at all b/c hes a buddy, and weve hung out, and i like him, and so its cool...but though i have known for Jeff for more then a decade, i dont feel like i know him, and he isnt my home teacher at all, i am no longer in the church. asking him to do things that home teachers usually do, is so strange, so isolating in a bunch of ways...but i need it done ,and i cant fucking do construction (jeff called back and said it wasnt going to work out)
there is a reason why lots of artists dont install their own shows--im not sure that blutaking them to the wall will work at all...
