modernism in asia has a couple of really interesting stories lately--the first is the critical re-evualton of van molyvann, a cambodian born creator of gorgeously verancualr, epicly scaled modernist buildings, mostly of concrete--he was only capable of creating three or four works, in his native land, before exile to Paris at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Many of his buildings were subsquently destroyed. There are attempts to recreate the work.

The second is the scandal that is occuring in the Corbu designed buildings of Chandigarh, India, where french and american collectors are buying or taking everything that isnt nailed down--a cane chair bought for 100 ruppees, after being restored goes for 10k, a polished manhole cover 26k--like agnes b's colonial explotation of Keita and the reprinting of his fotograps to european standards, or the odd history of the congolese houses by Pouve'' indepedent uk story here.outlook india peice here

And for a Mormon who is an ardent believer, that is a kind of death. ... Well, the problem was that -- well, actually, it was a double problem. I was getting reports back from people who had read and heard the things that I'd say that that, in fact, was how they were understanding it. They were saying: "Oh, thank you. This makes it understandable for me." ...

On the other hand, I was hearing officially from apostles, whom I regarded as God's chosen prophets and apostles on earth, that this kind of approach to history was not faith-promoting; that it was contrary to what God wanted. ...

Jack Bush, Dive, 1969.

The thing with the Late 60s Bushes (and i saw an amazing one at Miriam Sellnik today), is that one assumes that tthey are like noland or early stella, in their flatness, but their use of thin washes and subtle underpainting, combines a variety of modes of abstraction--here, with the underpainting of light purple on violet, then the impositon of a hot pink element, grounded onto a obliqued angle/tower of decortative colour--decorative colour that could be on couches or pillows or wallpaper, assumes a number of competing narratives of how to paint non-represenational them, and makes an anthology, that transitions b/w extreme comfort to jarring discord. The one at Sellnik, which is not on their website, does the same thing, but intsead of a collection of disparte elements, was 6 stripes in colours that were both clear and muddy, muted and bright, natural and fake, almost a dilaectic (a less sucessful one from the mid 70s had a swampy mudgreen ground with three bright swatches of colour, which indicates that the high risk/high reward compoenet of this kind of work)

is it time for a major critical revival of the painters eleven, and if so, some questions:
a) does their lack of reception outside of limited canadian spheres connect to a general dislike or distrust of hard edged abstraction
b) should it have come out of the wave made by nasgaard's book?
c) are they better liked in Edmonton, with its complicated history of modernism and montreal with its two nationalisms
d) what are the implications that major nationalist collectors (i.e. Thompson) never really purchased it large qauntities, but corporations (TD Bank, Great West Insurance Co., HBC, etc did?)
e) Bush is the one that has the most fame from the 11, is that because he is the best of the painters, the one with the most identifable, easily reproducable style, or something else?
f) Is Bush like Noland (and perhaps Truitt) in the sense that he is caught b/w the gestural abstraction and minimalism, with no safe space b/w them
g) IS Bush like Morris or Frankenthaler in his use of blank canvas or empty space as a compositonal element, and if that is the case is that small formal element enough to seperate them?
h) Morris is making a bit of a comeback, but his place is always ambigious
i) does any of this have to do with the sheer swooning colour drunk pleasure of much of this work, and if that is the case, then
j) IS there trans-national energy here or am i being to spec.

its a pulp illustration, mid 50s,. aside from the pretty fantastic use of colour, and the excellent anatomy, it has that slightly seedy pre/postfellatio vibe that is pretty hot.

these new bechtles, are pastels and not oils, the colours are faded, the light is autumunal and of dusk, the cars are not the objects of suburban devotion and familal pride, but covered in such a way that they resemble shrouds or lost in car parks and garages--even the full shot, alemda, obv. remembering his giant masterpeice of the late 60s, seems melted and faded with time, and with sun. . it is late work, small, intimate, deeply personal, and meloncholic to its core, a summing up of his lifes work, and his soon death. profoundly moving, and perhpas the strongest work in his career, even online.
