Alex Ross, the New Yorker Classical Music Critic, has a v. good blog. He is at Bayreuth, where the annual Wagner festival is taking place. The peice that is being played is a postmodern staging of parisfal, and he has written good things about it, and taken brilliant pictures as well. One of the pictures was this, http://www.therestisnoise.com/images/IMG_1494.JPG, the dog in question is Russ, Richards own. Apparently there are several bronzes all around town of this creature--the sculptours intent is to make Wagner more friendly.

Its not working. I still hate the overly long, violently teutonic, painfully noisy, obscure silliness that marks the worst excesses of his operas, esp. the ring cylce (where you cannot actually tell the charchters (sp) apart, because they all start the same way. (

This is why information needs to be free, because how you use, and fight againt, and play with texts is as creative and as important as making something "new", as if there is something new anyways.

I shouldnt say that, cause god knows it will.
The thing that the left needs to get from the far, theocratic right, is the ability to organiuze, we used to have that, think of the church networks that allowed the montgremy bus boycotts to happen.

The latest example is http://www.americansoffaith.org/, which leads me to two questions.

1) when did they get to take over god ?
2) why cant we be that earnest, is camp/irony/sarcasm so ineffective compared to people who believe something so deeply that they cannot joke about it ?

the article i have intended to write about media and god has been written, cjr does excellent work, and the recent links tht i have given here about kitsch and jesus should really be presented with more respect, if enough people find if vaulable then those who do not should look at where and why, examine it for flaws of course but also virtures--engage in honest and full discourse.

the problem i have w. the addiction model (and its my shit) is the problem that i have with being xian, ie i cannot concide giving up, surrendering--letting jacob break my hip, giving my burden to the higher power.
some of the pro ana sites that i have read talk about control, talk about how food is the only thing that can control, and that they want to do this, how can someone be so self aware, and so destructive...its like camus and his myth of sisphyus, where depression and sucide is consdiered an existental choice, one that needs to be kept as the ultimate possiblity in the back of ones head, except that in this case it is not kept in the back of the head, but kept in (unhealthy)  permanat tension--a tension one will lose.

they think its pseduo seizures, the evidence is piling up, and i think to myself, these lacuane, and frueds case studies of neurotic women, they are eeriley similar--and reading the stories of wwi shell shocked soilders in the recent hisoptry of m,ilitary pysch ive finished (fucked if i can remember the title), its like my mind has dredged up 100 yr old conditions, before it was cannonized into the medical model.

i wonder if my distrust of the medical model has devolped its own kind of nostaliga.
(aside from any/everything else)
do women make themselves thinner to take up less space
do women make themselves fatter b/c its easier to get food then love

two poppysch reasons to explain eating disorders
how much truth in each one.

reading diary of a fat housewife, stolen from my mothers book shelf when i was 15 or 16, disgusted and horrorfied by the self loathing .

how do i view my body, how do i view my food.

talking today to c and her friend dave and pat, about jesus etc (it was a complicated conversation, in tactics as well as subject) but they both saw the divine, and the divine save there lives--and when i was in the hospital or in bed, wanting to slice my wrists to ribbon, prayer seemed really not to function, not to work, not to do anything for me.

are the stories effective--do they cradle you and let you sleep when its dark, do they let you wake in the morning, does the smoke rise in the way you need it to rise ?

then pray the way you need to pray.

should forefront sacred, more background maybe...not exactly sure what the editor wants.

(dave leiger(sp)--if you are are still reading this, can you give me an email ?)
second draft of ana peice, not spell checked, not grammar checked, 300 words too long, not enough facts, but i wrote it like a blog peice

First hearing about eating disorders seems to come from popular culture--from the one episode of Degrassi Junior High with scinece prohect that acciudently turned into melodramatic biography, or the cable movie of the week, with the pretty starlet playing the role she had been practicing for in real life--or the cover of the tabs, Karen Carpenter, Tracey Gold, Mary Kate Olsen--depending on the decade. Then there are the sidebarred story in publications like Cosmopolitan, sandwhiched between dressing for the proper size and how tos on how to please a lover--almost like an act of ritual pennance. What these examples do not show is how popular the problem is, how epdemic is, and how to fix it.

There are as many Bulimics, Anoreixics and Compulsive Eaters in Canada as there are schizophrenics, but it might be said that these are the shock troops for the millions who's eating is essentially disordered.
It used to be that other people saw how painfully thin these people were, saw them go to bathrooms to puke after meals, called plumbers for toilets stuck with vomit, watched a months groceries disappaer and called the doctors on thyose who were suspect, called the doctors like someone called the cops. The doctors would hospitalize the patient, renoursih and refeed them by force, suggest they go to group therapy, give them valium or other addictive sedatives, and push them into chosing meal plans as early as possible--but the thinking can still be there, these patients in their lonely hospital rooms, chosing chicken over pork--not because they love chicken, they get joy from chicken, but because there is less calories in chicken--they might be gaining weight, but they are still playing the same games.

There is another, new and more controversial way to fight these disorders, and a method that is coming into its own, that is the addiction model. It shouldnt be a suprise, every thing is an addiction these days--from fucking to gambling to drinking to coke, but there are advantages to thinking of this as a compulsive sereis of behaviours that can be treated Bill W's twelve steps. There is a collective responsibility, a realztion that one cannot make food choices because one is too sick to, that one canot make many choices, and that the first thing to do is surrender all of the deisres for that obsessive contorl of family, time, energy, and food.

One of the way's that this addiction model is being implemented is the Society for Assisted Co-Operative Recovery from Eating Disorders, held in the same building as a retreat center and a retirement home for the Sisters of Charity (fact check). The first time I walked in the front doors I saw a group of Lutherans speaking German and the second there were berobed buddhist monks on silent walks--it is a place filled with spiritual resonace.

Aside from the Higher Power stuff, how does Sacred differ-. There are the meetings (pre and post meetings for every meal, a group therapy session at 2:00, biweekly twelve step meetings at Sacred Heart Church downtown, weekly weigh ins with a medical doctor, individual meetings with private pyshcatrists and pyshcologists). Each meeting is infused with an us mentatlity, there are no indvidual problems in SACRED, only a group of addicts trying to get better together. They are a true collection of addicts too, no heirachies, every staff member there has been an addict, and most of them have had eating disorders themselves.

The meetings I saw were painfully cathertic, much crying, intense revealtion, all of the emotional nakedness that heals, and seems to only be able to be done when someone who knows what you are going through is there to call bullshit. There was also another language, a cant that those who were in treatment spoke that those who were outside did not seem to, mostly i think by how much self help books passed each other--there was nothing poltical, not even something like Susie Orbach's ovular tract Fat is a Femminist Issue

6-12 women spend there days at SACRED, talking, kvetching, working together and eating meals plus snacks. The eating is the big part,  intended to show how much one can love food, and reteaching how to properly consume food, something so basic has to be done again. The cook seems to have done most of the teaching, a woman who grew up in South Texas, who talked to me about how much she loves the food of her childhood, becoming rapturous about fatback bacon. She cooks food with explicit joy--singing and dancing around the kitchen.  This excitement the residents don't have. Towards the end of the program  the residents have more and more autonomy towards their meal choices. They learn that joy.

From what I have seen here, from the dinners that celebrate 30, 60, 90 days of soberity, from tthe meetings, the coffee and the meals that I have eaten both out of the center and in it, i can imagine the program working. There is the solidaratary of people who have gone through massive trauma, and there is the joy of people who are going through new life. They have been open to me, answering my questions with lengthy interviews, being as self aware as they are self critical. I wonder if this is a new way out and I hope it is.

George W. Bush as Presidential Simulacrum (title says it all)
What I like about Fernwood investments is that they get the most obvious objection out of the way, right off the bat.

This is the next step in making sure that all work, regardless of intent is commercailsed to the nth degree, and also the last one to say that consumer goods (paintings, sculpture, tables, chairs, toys, comics) will always be worth more then you paid for them , if you take care of them and there is enough time in the midst.

What they do, if you are insanely rich, the word right now is about 250m, is to buy art like one is buying a mutual fund--qouting from there website:
Quantitative Econometric Research and Analysis: Fernwood employs a range of quantitative techniques such as repeat sales performance, artist-specific index and cohort index to interpret various sources of publicly available data for valuation and forecasting purposes.
Market Intelligence Gathering: Through the Fernwood network of dealers and professionals in the art community as well as the regular monitoring of publicly available information, Fernwood systematically captures intelligence that informs our buying and selling strategies.
Collector Behavior Analysis: Fernwood has identified a number of discreet collecting segments that behave in disparate ways according to key variables, and is engaged in ongoing analysis of buying and selling decisions in various sectors to inform our decision making.
Economic Analysis and Forecasting: Drawing on macro-economic data and research, Fernwood analyzes the information described above in context to make predictions about future developments.
I don't really have time for this shit, but its worth a look to see what the enemy is doing. Also he writes a long peice and links to it on the front page, about why the Picasso mess was a good thing.

Jerry Stahl might have done it.
Most of all, we need to see that the landscape of reality is altered. In the past, we've fought ideological movements that took control of states. Our foreign policy apparatus is geared toward relations with states: negotiating with states, confronting states. Now we are faced with a belief system that is inimical to the state system, and aims at theological rule and the restoration of the caliphate. We'll need a new set of institutions to grapple with this reality, and a new training method to understand people who are uninterested in national self-interest, traditionally defined.
Last week I met with a leading military officer stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq, whose observations dovetailed remarkably with the 9/11 commissioners. He said the experience of the last few years is misleading; only 10 percent of our efforts from now on will be military. The rest will be ideological. He observed that we are in the fight against Islamic extremism now where we were in the fight against communism in 1980.

the girl that i love loves another, and the other loves another, and the girl thinks i cant love girls, and anyways the girl is hurt and sad and lonely and broken, so she isnt even really looking for love, except maybe for the boy that she loves, the boy who loves another.

and my best friend loves the same girl, and every time i talk to this girl, spent time with her, go for coffee or drive around, i love her just a little bit more.

and it hurts.

bourne supremcy today, and it was excellent.

aside from its untradtional narrative (task rather then charchter based), its short cut, dark colour, murkly light, paranoid pacing and almost manic editing. it also did not have the hollywood endings, the geewhiz spy shit was kept to a bare minimum and the acting was first rate (joan allen and matt damon)

the interesting thing was how much of  it was a current  meaphor of intellgenice, w. allen tying to find the truth about governments secerts and another, ugly, fat, white, bad suited, (obv. republican) agent got money from russian oil, said things like i am a patroit and wanted to "liquidate" the assisan because he might have know things about said dirty deals.

the actor looked like dick cheney with hair, and the oil company was called pukev (shades of yukov--sp)

the ethical nature of the cia, what they did to bourne and the implications of that was not approached in the movie directly, but hinted at thru the obv. ptsd amensia that bourne had, and julia stiles having a line about the mental health effects of the work.

(speaking of stiles--there was a scene w. him and stiles in a train utility room, which looked standard man beating up standard women, action movie misogyny, until he loses it, on the cusp of sanity, and you have no which way to tell how he will react)

car chase in moscow that ends the movie, catastrophic and true, no fancy balachine with buicks, just a hard death to the end of a hard movie)
In the last little while, i have tried to write to conserative xian orgs, using personal anecdotes, in order to further discourse about subjects that i care about, in a way that leads me to understand them better.

this is what i wrote to the hip pomo anti porn site xxxchurch:

I want to tell a story before my question, and since the bible is fullof stories, i don't imagine that you would object. (It's allanecdotal, we can do hermeneutics and bible studies and stats, if you want, but right now all i want to do is tell a little story.)

I grew up LDS, which is a little like growing up baptist. Every Sundayschool i was told that sex was wrong, that it was immoral, that itshould not be done. I was told not to masturbate and that if i didthat i would become addicted. I was told t hat god hated those whojerked off. When I was struggling with coming out, i was told  that Ineeded to change or I would be miserable and unhappy. I was,i hated mybody, my sexuality, my self and my god.

When I discovered porn, esp.  gay porn something split inside of me.Not the bad kind of splitting that you are talking about, but a sortof renewal. I started to masturbate without guilt, i did not become addicted to sex or porn or jerking off. I settled into a rather banalschedule. It did not disrupt school, work, a social life or evenfalling in love. When I fell in love for the first time, i knew whatto do and we had a moment that was bonding and holy. I am pleased thatI am queer, I don't hate my body as much as I used to or even my self.Me and god aren't hanging out anymore, but thats a different kind ofstory, that has a lot to do with politics and not much to do with my penis.

I am concerned with the commercialization of our culture, and howambiguous and complicated sexualities are being torn down and replacedwith a banging and crashing lack of respect and love. I grok that, andif you are working on that--thats fantastic. But what I am worriedabout is that what is positive about sex and porn is lost.

I am terrified that you will see this, and you will say to me thatbeing queer is immoral, and that i will be condemned for that, andthat my view that learning about sex, and viewing sex as a positive least, and try to explain to me that there was not something that was opened here. I also know that you are really busy, and that I will most likely not get the kind of answer that I would like, but I wanted to put this on the table. (also, you will hate the book, but for a larger and more complicated study of the positive forces that porn has on gender, sex, class, theother, and people in general, you should look at Laura Kipnis 's book Bound and Gagged.)

There was an interesting string of comments about outing on crooked timber after this blog, which started outing people:

http://www.blogactive.blogspot.com/

There was the usual handwringing about how unethical and how problematic it all is, and how not very nice it is to talk about peoples secerts, and how sexuailty has no place in the popular discourse of a nation, i made two comments, this one is the least contextual and the most concise.

The only way to stop homophobia is to recognize that their are queer folk around, in impt positions doing impt things.
The vital thing is to make sure that instutions will become open to all sorts, and by having some people being willing to hide and make polite makes it impossible for the rest of us to have those jobs and be those people.
Those in power will chose those in closet over those in the streets, unless we make it impossible for them to be in the closet.

buwlyer lytton prize this year is announced--two problems i still have

a) lytton was actually a pretty solid and interesting writer, in that edwardian firbank overwrought kind of way, and his work really should be looked at more solidly.
b) bad good writing is good writing, the care and attention to how it is constructed, the vigour and innovation in imagery, the solid comic timing, all marks this as pretty high qaulity...bad writing is accidental writing (look at annual reports, some pornography, television sitcoms, summer blockbusters, most american news magazines and papers, superhero comics, the stuff you can write without paying attention to writing it)

maybe even this blog.

(of course the idea that no one is invincible to aids is here, and even america cannot escape from it, something that has been said over and over again at the worlds aids conference, from protestors who ask for 1 billion dollors and no abstience red tape, to the president of uganda, who said this:
"It is wrong to tell us to remain married 'for better or for worse', since couples whose marriage has failed will have no alternative but to seek sex elsewhere, fuelling the spread of the HIV."I think time has come for us to evaluate African marriages by synthesising our cultures and coming up with home-grown solutions."
and then talked that condoms were a stopgap measure, a " a good improvisation". Which is an important thing to notice, and a vital way to realize how much colonial practice is still working w/i africa.

Even brilliant critics who write for publications like this http://mostlyafrica.blogspot.com/ assumed it was mbeki redux, instead of a deconstruction of what is being done for aids in africa and what needs to be done.

SvnRgdTgr:
I know, hon.  I'm just telling you that *I* personally dislike her.  It's okay.  I dislike her because she furthers the stereotype of the dumb blonde, which intelligent blondes have been struggling to overcome for decades.  I dislike her because she represents everything giggly jiggle girl, which by nature is anti- whatever I am (even though I've shed my glasses, I'm still a geek at heart).  I dislike her because she's one of those people who's become successful in music without having any talent at all.  I dislike her because her crispy brown tan and gleaming super-white teeth tells me she'd rather be dolling herself up than doing anything music-related, which I realize is also what Liz Phair looks like these days but at least I *know* that she's earned the right to look however the hell she wants to look like.  I dislike her (Jessica) because she's one of those people who seems to have made it big without struggle, because her life seems without struggle, because she never had to work a day job in her life while she struggled to make it as a singer or some other creative endeavor (I can think back to the Madonna story here and remember that she actually paid her dues in little-known bands before she made it big), I dislike her because she sets the example to little girls that they need to have a handsome hubby in order to be happy, and I dislike her because she's a living, breathing Barbie doll, and I always beheaded any of the Barbie dolls I got because I just could not stand Barbie.SvnRgdTgr: Hmmm.  Good question.  I guess Andrew will plug the forum back in whenever.  It's okay, though.  He should call the shots here
its not about the voice
i think that she is the only pop star of the last little while that statyed the course and let herself be managed
i think that she continues a dumb blonde as career that has been a 20th century american archtype (marylin, mansfield, et. al)
I think she is evnagical to a new kind of explicit baptist sexual ethic, or at least conserative christan one (ie until married virigin, after that sexually obesseive but only w. the husband) ie true love waits, silver ring thing
Shes all american, started at churches, moved onto state fairs (which she is still doing) and then went on television, her uso work fitrs in here
she is devoid of self reflexisve irony
she teases w/o letting us be a voyuer

tiny unicorn genius keeps calling stephin merritt souless, and white...and forgets how gay he is, how queer he is...how camp and irony have led to the truth of emotions, and how ambiougous and dark that truth is.

how little do we get the wit that gay men used to have, how little do we keep the gifts of gilt edged satire, and the destruction of enemies to stupid to understand our grief and pain.

the last lines of his new one, that marry me, as a question and a begging is more soulful then any number of nihilst punk/bling bling hip hop.  how quiet and how subtle the options are, how much he wants that old fashioned nonesense of marriage, and even nature (b/c fags arent natural, you know) cannot  change is mind---there is something transgressive.

he makes fun of his own people too, the ones who fight against marriage, who talk about it permanace wioth fear, and about how constricting and chaining it is--how meanigless time is when you love a boy.

That sense of liberation is abundant on the album's first single "Sweetest Sin." Written by hit maker Diane Warren and produced by Ric Wake, "Sweetest Sin" is unabashedly carnal and, as Jessica notes, a marked change from the giddy teen pop that launched her career. "I'm not dancing around this time," she laughs. "I'm not wearing that head set mic ever again in my life!"
A celebration of love, her marriage, and making love, "Sweetest Sin" signals a new artistic direction for Jessica. "You'll definitely know I'm a woman after hearing this song," she offers. "It's a deeply sensual song but it's also romantic and recording it was one of the most natural things I've done

the lights perfect...everything is all blue and holy. got the new daniel clowes instead of the new

its like reading the best american erotica 2003 (which i think i sold--dammit) and wanting for once a nice penis/vagina married couple missionary love story to cleanse the palate--and i get one, but its too late, and im stuck forever in the mire of filth my sunday school teachers warned me about.
moores exhaustive treatment of the facts and sourcing does not address my central problem with the contexutalaztion of his facts.

but its good to know how well researched the fucking things are.

Larry Clarke teenage lust, kids 15, clarkes 30 at the time of the photo.

exploitive, filthy, pornographic and sexy as all get out.

I don't know what I think about clarke--but this article from pavement has some interesting things to say about it
how do terry richardson/nan goldin/ryan mcginley/larry clarke manage to take such initimate photographs--clarke talked about letting everyoine see that you have a camera, but what happens after that, how do you respect the subject/photographer ethic. what is the subject/photographer ethic in this new age where everything and anything can be photographed (by assuming personae/by moving into fiction/by making sure everyone in yr life is exploited/exploiting ?)

i find myself more interested in richardson lately...in his balance between stage and not stage, between portrait and street shot; b/w party shot and porn shot;b/w high fashion and low art)

i figure, maybe if i made 700 a month or so, maybe i could do it, maybe even less.

200 or so a week, i think is what i am saying. thats one or two features, or 5 or 6 reviews.

the journal turned down my piece, but thats cause i didnt follow my pitch...i'm good at writing pitches, but not v. good at following them.

also, this is the firs time in 2 months where i have started pitching, started writing, started hustling on a more serious level (life modelling at bioware this week or next, for one)

what i am most worried about is what pat is worried about, and what shea is worried about is being too close, being more of an emotional vampire then i already am.

im not really finically secure or independent right now, or emotionally or personally or in an other way. i am complacent in the most obv. way about my future, full of pipe dreams...the only way to move on i think is to push myself out of the womb, move far away and start again.

i just dont know if it will work.

the globe and mail had some asshole do a hackjob on joan roughgreens new book on sexual selection--mostly calling the book impossible to judge b/c roughgreen used to be a man, and is now a woman (god the politics of that sentence are awful, she is a post op mtf transexual, fully transtioned as a woman...is that better?)

anyways ms roughgreen says that sexual selection has been misunderstood and that it can explain the commonness of same gendered sexual attraction and activity among non humans (i am working from tertairy sources here)

namely, that sex is not only reproductive for everything, and that is is used for things like pair bonding, child raising, recreation, etc. sexual selection then can be about who is the best x to do x job rather then who is the best to breed.

also she claims that our views of gender (ie socially selected rather then biologically determined) could posibbly apply other places.

had to read b/w the lines in the review though, cause it was all about how a tranny cant be objective in these things, and how the soft social sciences are over taking the hard biological ones (note the language)

also, harpers had a throw away line in a review of passolini and givson about aztecs and the spanish that i have been thinking for a couple of days, and actually made me put the aztecs ahead ethically:

namely they happened at the same time and the same place, and they were both ritualized, publicsed, spectacles of blood shed:

there was more respect for the victim in the aztec cermony
it was not shrouded in other things, like good laws or punishing heresey
there was more silence and more ritual
it was quieter, more witnesses, less hoopla
it was more beautiful (can we make an aesthic arguement--can we say something is ethically or morally superior because it is better designed ?)

the thing w. me and cops, is that i cant control my reactions--when i am dealing with something as simple as a jaywalking ticket, i act so horribly (abusive, inapproite, often phyiscally intimidating) that i escaltes to being in the back of a cop car with silver bracelts around my wrists.

i cant deal with them, this hate, this visceral feeling that they have betrayed me, the belief that b/c they chose the uniform they chose my sterotypes all comes to the surface.

they scare me, they over react, they need to have their authority respected (and i refuse to do that), the ask questions that are none of their business (what does it matter if im working, if i have pysch problems), they have fucked up priorties.
Aubade1984: what do you think would be an effective way for MM to make an anti-war documentary?
PinkMoosePearl: define effective
Aubade1984: "demonstrates to people why the bush administration is corrupt and the war is wrong"
Aubade1984: because i don't see how it could be any more effective in doing that
Aubade1984: you can argue that it's exploitative or patronizing or whatever
PinkMoosePearl: do you know what
Aubade1984: but i don't think "we already know all this" is a good argument against it, because a lot of ppl DON'T know all this
PinkMoosePearl: youve done that to those who will listen
PinkMoosePearl: that work is done
PinkMoosePearl: i mean look at the new york times best seller
PinkMoosePearl: half of america thinks this war is nessc. and half of america thinks this war is evil
PinkMoosePearl: and it wont win
PinkMoosePearl: no side will budge
PinkMoosePearl: what will it take for you to be convinced that this war is right
Aubade1984: i don't think it's that simple
Aubade1984: i think it's possible to convince people that the war is wrong because there are good reasons that it is wrong
Aubade1984: i don't think there are any strong arguments in favor of it
PinkMoosePearl: there are good reasons for it
PinkMoosePearl: sadaam hussien is a genocidal maniac
Aubade1984: like?
PinkMoosePearl: see above
PinkMoosePearl: america belives in the concept of liberty
PinkMoosePearl: it is in our economic self interest to mantain free flow of oil
PinkMoosePearl: i mean thats three
Aubade1984: i've heard those reasons before
Aubade1984: for like the last year now
PinkMoosePearl: but they are reasons that are legit
Aubade1984: actually the third one isn't a bad reason
PinkMoosePearl: now we can deconstruct them, except for the third, they have precedent in the jsut war tradition
Aubade1984: the odd thing is that's the one argument i didn't hear anyone make before the war started
PinkMoosePearl: grotius onward
Aubade1984: the second reason is very vague
PinkMoosePearl: ok
Aubade1984: it was used to justify vietnam, after all
PinkMoosePearl: yeah of course
Aubade1984: but i see what you're saying
PinkMoosePearl: and domino is coming back, cf hutcinson and clash of civ. (wrong name)
Aubade1984: that these appear reasonable to half of america
PinkMoosePearl: they are resaonable
PinkMoosePearl: we balance differently then they do though
PinkMoosePearl: x is legit, but y is more legit
PinkMoosePearl: namely
PinkMoosePearl: what pisses me off about moore, mostly
PinkMoosePearl: is that he denies the first half of that equation
Aubade1984: that's a good point
Aubade1984: can you imagine him supporting any president at any time?
Aubade1984: it's that "if we can't have ralph nader, we might as well just say to hell with everything" mentality
PinkMoosePearl: nader is a bully though
Aubade1984: well so is moore
PinkMoosePearl: of course. (do you mind if i post this on my blog ?)
Aubade1984: yeah that's okay
Aubade1984: actually debord was kind of a bully too
Aubade1984: most important public figures seem to have that trait
met hotel; edmonton: perfect marcel bruer/le courbsier/van der rohe chairs; in perfect three point settings, between them a large laminated tree hunk to express how nature can never be conquered, and to aesthically contrast machine and nature, set apart in pods, the distance enough to mean that all were really alone--v. modern, v. sexy--except the carpet resembled a tawdry casino somewhere b/w reno and tahoe--a cheap one that gets you lost and hides bodily fluids, might be there from the beginning. “In a slowed-down, depressed world economy, America’s propensity to consume more than it produces ends up being viewed by the rest of the planet as something positive, even meritorious…
“We behave toward the United States like Keynesian global citizens who are expecting the state to jumpstart the economy. Indeed, according to Keynes, one of the purposes of the state is to support demand through consumption. In his General Theory Keynes has a kind word for the pharaohs who built the pyramids, big spenders who thereby regulated economic activity. Our pyramid is America—kept intact by the work of the entire planet…

“From an economic point of view American society has become the ‘state’ of the entire planet. It often expresses its own hostility to the state, however, an attitude that it puts into practice through efforts to limit the state’s role in the national economy… Paradoxically, the negation of the state in the society has ended up making a ‘state’ of the society. Moreover, it is an entity that has, on the one hand, the negative characteristics that classical or neoclassical economists attribute to the state (namely nonproductivity and financial irresponsibility); and on the other, the positive potential the Keynesian economists concede to the state, namely the capacity to stimulate demand in times of depression.”
