so i heard this story every day for a decade and a half when i grew up

but i went to the grove a few days ago

and it was a wood lot

of populars, lookign no more different, no more sacred

then any of the other copses on the road side

the videos and the paintings from childhood were these beautific images

of cathedrals in the wildnerness

dissapited here

but it was good

in the sense that it confirmed my idea that the church, even at it's most mystical or it's most weird

was plain

was banal, was about practicality

there was holiness in the plainness

some thots on oneida

• the bookstore had several books that were out of print, and cheap.
  
• one of them was special love/special sex a diary of one of the members
  
• there were 45k visitors to neida b./w 1862 and 1867, this was only mentioned in passing by the tour but thids must have been a huge source of money (cf similar numbers of visitors to the shaker community near by
• the culture of mutual criticism c/w est, etc in the 70s
• Victor Neyes, the son of the founder, was thought to have gone insane due to a combo of masturbation and certain texts, including goethe, he ended in a philly asylum

• all of the apartments focus on a central parlour, which functions as an example of the architechture of control, but a difuse, community one, sort of a paropticon set on its side. the parlour was supposed to control gossip, backbiting, and the like, but often failed--in fact the discourses of communalism that were encouraged and the discourses of communalism that were discouraged were often flowing from the same sources (cf eliza snow's diaries of plural marriage in utah, and how to lighten the community of sister wives)
• the refusal or inability to mainstream the practive was not that big a deal--the usual reasons for disalootiuon, hunger, backbiting, etc was less opernational then the natural dissoloution that marks the life span of these spaces
  
• the weirdest thing about the discourses of this space--is what caused its eventual downfall was the desire for single families and heterosexual pair bonding; the queerest thing about this place could be a "special" friendship (c/c the use of words like unusual or special friendship in satholci seiminaries to note male sms)
• much of the biblical discourse of the onedia centres on eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven as a singifer of sexual radicialism
• i still wonder what happened after the disovling--to the adults and children who had to leave this utopia, what does expuslsion mean in this context
• much of the deciding who would do which work was decided by an almost random combition of skill, mutal benifance, luck, and hard work
  
• in the library voulmes of the dial, on meserism, spiurtralism, fashonaible texts on the avant garde spiritual practices of the day; they visited and traded pracitical information with the shakers; and the mansion was based at least partially on deisgns by robert own, communalism was not only wiht in their own spaces but w/i an emerging community of these new spaces
  
• more research needed on the onedia's use of st paul
• there practice of spiritual eugenics versus personal or ethnic eugenics, as an excuse to have children
  
• prefectionism as a unique american way of sorting out the tension b/w work and grace, and is v calvinist.
  

i think the most powerful thing about the oneida community is that it chose to disband in 1851. it had a community meeting about it's own disoultion.

as well, it seems to be less about sex, the religious c ommunities here in genreal seem to be less about sex then their reputation has settled, and more about how to live amongst each other--even the titles for work against monogomy--plurarl in the lds, complex here, has a lingustic edge, we want to live lives of complexity, of pluralism, god calls us to live lives of complexity, and pluralism.

rochester art musuem was weird, mostly little old ladies bullshit, with half a dozen interesting works.

1. a fantastic rachel reyes flower painting, murky and muddy, exterior, with more frogs and snakes then bugs--is her work a criticism of the domestic, or an attempt to bring flower painting to the place of morality that still lives occupied
   
2. a dutch painting where translucent lace was overlayed with pattenred lace over hair

has this much care been taken to shoot parking lines the difference b/w spray paint and non, b/w those done carefully and those scattered, the odd cornos of paint in the sprayed lines is weirdly the only chaotic touch

• some of the more explicit theatrical stagings of cowboys and indians, including indians in full war bonnets, (and the indians are always caucasion, though there are latino, african american, and pacific islander subjects in these texts) are done by bruce of la, or other la area pohotographer,s which makes you wonder if this is a shadow culture of LA (cf introductury essay about tourists who did not get access to the men of venice beach, while mizer did, was about his understanding of how the culture of image works--so is bruce/la's success one of intertextuality?

Roberta SMith writes the Obit on Noland. I don't think she likes him v. much, but i think that the point she makes about his inheritance from matisse is why i like him, I think that Matisse is a problematic figure in 20th century art history, because most of his work is about pleasure, and the sensous over ranking colour over almost anything else--there is nothing political, nothing cross refential in the work of matisse, so the people who fall in love with him, paint from him, are risking being called decorative, or unimportant, or shallow. i am not making an arguement against politics in art, but i think that pleasure for pleasures sake has a place, and those who work from that have a place.

Taylor Swift could do with a bit more self-awareness, but there is something tender about her songs that makes them seem so real. I know her problems with authenticity and pop, but there is something so lovely, so intensely broken about how she realizes she was told a lie. On the other hand, you do not want to get Miranda Lambert angry -you wouldn't like her when she's angry. Revolution is not the masterpiece of the last album, but enough of a new direction, with the same kind of pop instincts grafted onto a desire for Opry legitimacy. There is something so lovely, so exacting and so emotionally wrought about Lyle Lovett's Natural Forces. Filled with a swing that is only sometimes melancholy which sets the place with an exactitude that is effortless. It is also one of the most charmingly filthy albums of the year -including a cover of the Doughboys' epic food = fucking opus "Pantry," and perhaps the catchiest song about masturbation ever ("Choke My Chicken"). That he does this while covering Van Zandt's heartbreaking "Loretta" or "Bayou Song," the harshest text about Louisiana since Randy Newman, is even better.

Kenneth Noland, the best pure painter since 1950, the most under rated abstractionist of the 20th century, the post minimalist who had the rigour and the creamy love of hand applicaiton, a colourist of such subtlety and skill that to look at his work had an earthbound, american spirtualism, but mediated by a profound work ethic, the creator of important masterpeices in every decade of the 20th century, and a man whose stripes outclassed, outworked, and overmanouvered his rivals, is not the best living painting working as of yesterday.

(i love noland, i am a noland evangelist, last year i said this about him:
My favourite living painter, and this year I saw a dozen examples of his best work, not only a couple at the usual places in Edmonton, but 4 at the Abstract show at the Jewish Museum, one of his chevron stained paintings next to NE Thing's velvet ribbon riff on it at the AGO, and the joyous, cosmically humming 20 foot long stripe painting from 1967 to 1970. Can we please have a decent retrospective , please? )

from this year:
Greenberg had to expunge Johns from the canon for a number of reaons, most pointedly because it was obvious that Kenneth Noland==who Greenberg celebrated--had pilfered the format of his concentric circle painting directly from John's targets. Even more troubling was the fact that if Johns were allowed into the ranks of the chose, the keystone of Greenberg's argument that painterliness was dead would crumble. Greenberg had to admit that Johns had a nice hand. But he dimissed this talent wit h a brash as minor, implying that Johns was nothing more than a hand, ignoring the multitude of new issues that John's paintings placed at the centre of contemporary aesthetic practice. (146)

Noland is a better controlled painter then Johns, Noland's concentric circles were doing different work then John's targets, but she is right, that the four horsemen are still unappreciated for their painterly skills or their draughtsmenship, because critics like greenberg would lose if he admitted it, and because critics post greenberg were not interested in textual authority.

All of what we go to Newman for, but better, because he is decorative, and the lack of taking oneself seriously while still making paintings that ravish at 22 feet seems a high wire act (seeing him live, seeing those pencil lines, and how he makes the colour straight, ie his techinique is almost process oriented)

four thots on the feast of the circumcision:

a) previously i have written about the importance of this feast as a discussion of the sexualisation of the holy. the embodiment of flesh that has sexual thots and feelings. i still think this is true.
b) the thing that i have avoided, is that the circumcision marks the male body. the incarnaiton of the divine is one in a male body. the foreskin is holy, the original sin lies in the foreskin, the church rests on christ, the erection of the cross an erection of the body.
c) what do we do with the sex of christ (sex in the elizabtethan sense, sex in the victorian sense, sex in the biological sense, and sex in the cultural sense). there are an infinitie number of ways to gender the divine, but to worship a male body. for those who the male body has done damage, for those whose male bodies are unstable, for those who never learnt how to embody their maleness, how do we construct that worship? to put it another way: if christ is us and we are christ, if we are the body of the christ, what does it mean that the incarnation, the foundaitonal miracle of our community is a miracle of the penis. it is not only a miracle of the penis, but it does feature promiently. how do we, who have complicated realtionships to their penis, are required to intergrate one into our understanding of the divine.
d) the unruly body, the body of collapsing, of unrealiblity, of being on this earth and therefore not perfected, this body impressed into the flesh of the divine, how do we embody its maleness w/o being reactionary, while still working for liberation?
