anyone who has paid any attention to pyschomedical research in the last decade will be able to tell you this, esp. the brilliant social history listening to prozac by Dr Peter Kramer--two interesting things

1) depression keeps being one of those intanglible strange things, where it might be biochemical, but most of the evidence suggests that it is heavily mediated by social and cultural factors, more then almost anything else depression is a cultural and social disorder. (i suspect the half a dozen or so books about depression that have come out in the last year or so agree with me, i know that the noonday demon does)
2) people assume that the placebo effect just means the asshole doctors are faking you, i like to think that the placebo effect is a useful triumphing of the spirit--the stupid little white pills i take, i dont know if they fuck with the sertanion in any significant way, but they make me feel better---the ritual of remembering, and the implications (call it pyscho-linguistic programming) of getting up every morning and saying, this pill will make me feel better...

i know that you are not a huge fan of freud and his children, but both of those thoughts above are heavily freudian, and i think that he was correct at least about neurosis and depression (and the primacy of wombats)

fairfield porter 1950 sketchbook (i loev that he uses one of those black and white marbled composition notebook). the images are really strong, as well, i never thought that he would be much of his sketcher, because his paintings have an immediacy that does not seem well planned, but the images here are in general, and sometimes specifically, preplanned objects for painting. even in sketch form, his landscapes are much better then his portraits (you can see it in the two tennis motion studies, and the 10 or so nudes from live models found here), the sketches of landscapes have an exactictude of form, and an economy of line, that strikes me as northern european, or comes from a tradition of new england image creation that can be traced back directly to holland and england.

Amy Arnson is a v. good painter, and her seascapes are sumptous in their material fetish, in their control of media, that they are water colour portraits of water, has a certain delicacy, that you have to use the medium to create pictures of the medium, that is clever w/o being overwheliming process orientated about it--she also makes me v. v. happy that someone can paint as well as bechtel or estes again. The peices are easel sized or smaller, making something as cosmically large, intimate and lovingly personalable.
