to clean up from last night, queer artists problematic, xians inclusive, oddly.
odd day, long meeting, awkard as hell, its the queer thnig, and i just feel like im fucking up, constantly, i just dont get the structure, etc

and then verge of nervous breakdown, got lost, et al, but saw a good 90 minutes of aarons show, which was excelent, then drinks and stuff with him and his pals.

i noticed this at the bbq last sunday, and then today with aaron, in that it was abutting the queer thing...i think one of the reasons why im xian or why i feel comfortable w xians, is that they are sue to or kindly benevolent towarsd other peoples fuck ups. they are good at handling the fuck ups. & im a fuck up

some news

1) show at remedy from aug 1st to sept 1st. will be colourfield, and maybe texture work.
2) no show at axis, my work is too small.
3) sent edmonton modernist show to milner, tiny thing, 10 images and 6 pages of paper, i dont know if it will work or not, the artist statement manages to be both polemic and dense, so im not optomistic.
from AS Byatts 2000 Heywood Lecture at the National Portrait Gallery, qouting Hermione Lee:

Virginia made Vita pose as a voluptous Lely for the photographer Lenare ("I was miserable, draped in an inadequate bit of pink satin with all my clothes slipping off, but V was delighthed and kept diving under the black cloth of the camera to peep at the effect")...Vita was made to sit inside a huge frame when they took endless photographs...

(19)

Byatt goes on to mention that one of the peices of research she did for Orlanda, was visit Vita Sackville West at the ancestral Sackville home, Knole in Kent, and saw the portrait hall. She then took photos of Sackville not only as a Lely, but as her realtivies, both male and female. Then Orlando amongst other things becomes a pyschic reclaiming of materlineal lines, and a historgraphy of family aesthetics...

This is a list of possible connections, from a woolf seminar at the U of Utah (?!?)

speaking of localizing and the new topographers mark brautigam's work on wisconsin is isolated, rural, witty, brilliantly composed, deep, and has a kind of severity that is often lacking in similar work. he is a master of colour, but not the geewhizflashbang colour one expects , dark woods, bright snow, grey skies, he also manages to pack an enormous amount of visual information into relativley small peices, w/o making the work seem crowded or chaotic. hes really really good.

chavez shut down a tv station which disagreed w. him, what is left unwritten about esp in the states, is that this station has ben working (or had been working) on supporting a violent coup against chavez, the link says the coup has been recent, the problem with the whole thing, is that chavez is deeply paranoid, and the states have a tendency towards givnig money to far right orgs that do this sort of thing...i dont think that we will eevr get a full story on venezula

bill moyers interviews gary winnogrand, from 1982, just before he died (and a point in his life where gwynne dryer writes, he took too many images, shoot too much, dqyers book ends with teh digial era, doesnt write about the impliactions of a basically never ending supply of images, and what it means to craft narative, to edit, crop, cut, etc , when teh physical act of making prints disappears, winnogrand made about 2500 photos in the last year(s) of his life, and i make that in about 7 months, i took 265 yesterday) (the interview made me kep wondering, when he talks about the kind of artless framing, and subject oriented movement, and the taxonomizing he does in an esatz kind of way, makes me think that he would have been one of the few people who could have made the transition b/w film and digital w/o any problem) (like baltz, shore, they didnt know how to just shoot, so they had their two books each, and then fell apart, got to teaching, imparted the aesthetic, and teh vision to a new era of students, that aesthetic became localised and intensfied, also, i wonder, considering how eggleston both shoots and prints, why he hasnt moved to digital formatting yet?

thinking about geoffs talking about eakins about a month ago, and lucie smiths discussion of bellows/eakins in american realism, i had a couple of thots

1) the connections b/w eakins and the photo/painting split are v. well documented, eakins photos were formally, almost classically infulenced, not cold, but v. much about the poses of greece and rome, you could see in them the plaster casts and statues that were part of the academy, no matter how intimate the work was, there were boxers and apollos, discus throwers, adn atheletes not of america, but of the ancient world. he claims whitman, but when whitman wrote:

Twenty-eight young men bathe by the shore,
Twenty-eight young men and all so friendly;
Twenty-eight years of womanly life and all so lonesome.

She owns the fine house by the rise of the bank,
She hides handsome and richly drest aft the blinds of the window.

Which of the young men does she like the best?
Ah the homeliest of them is beautiful to her.

Where are you off to, lady? for I see you,
You splash in the water there, yet stay stock still in your room.

Dancing and laughing along the beach came the twenty-ninth
bather,
The rest did not see her, but she saw them and loved them.

The beards of the young men glisten'd with wet, it ran from their
long hair,
Little streams pass'd all over their bodies.

An unseen hand also pass'd over their bodies,
It descended tremblingly from their temples and ribs.

The young men float on their backs, their white bellies bulge to the
sun, they do not ask who seizes fast to them,
They do not know who puffs and declines with pendant and bending
arch,
They do not think whom they souse with spray.
Song of MY Self 11

(and of course, there are only 6 men here, and the 6 men are nude, not stripped, polite, and the women is absent, the voyuer is gone, the intimacy of the details of the male form is gone, and yet, the tenderness in which the landscape is intergrated with the boys, makes it a v. explicitly homoerotic, queer, boyloving text...he returns all of the contexts to the greek model, which might have been the scandal in phildelphia)

i always thot that the bellows 42 kids was a pardoy of eakins (well it is a parody of eakins, but i was wondering why the hell he did it), and i think i figured it out, lucie called it a snap shot, and the stripping, the half dressed, the chaotic mess of bodies, and the brackish water, suggesting urban runoff, well its a snapshot versus a formed portrait, a brownie vs a albumen...so the parody is one of eakins classical arcadia, and also his use of photography (ie new techonlogy) to remake the bodies of greece, to classicise and formalise something radically new.

bellows then is a post industrial, almsot marxist critque of eakins wealth and privelege?

(i know that bellows was a print maker, did he take photogs?)

(smith calls it an informal paraphrase, and i do notice that one of them has too little of whitmans 28 men and one has too many)

the three images im talkign about:

George Bellows, 42 Kids, 1907, oils

Eakins, The Swimming Hole, 1884, Albumen print

Eakins, Photo Study, Albumen Print, date unkown

Eakins, The Swimming Hole, ca 1884

now for some real fun,
if eakins is daugertype, and bellows is brownie, is mcginley digi?

2) sjsa is buying huge bus ads on at least two major bus routes, both that went by my house.

the thing is i had the usual stomach dropped out, almost puked, almost cried, seized on the bus thing, but i didnt go home, im typing this on the computer before the queer fest board meeting. so i think thats progress (i wonder if one of the things that hospital did, was straighten the signifers, made the chaos of the triggers more clear and more linear in their narrative flow, and if that is the case, then maybe thats the first step to getting it out of the way)

justine kurland from this months artforum:
The celebration of motherhood hasnt been a favoured subject for artists since impressionaism, and the early-twentieth-century movements on which its influence is immediately discernble...Justine Kurland goest against the grain by taking up the subect of motherhood without any apparent ambivalence about maternity. Kurland gives her all to fashioning a female cosmology--a Garden of Eden without Adam--grounded in the fertillity of nature and modeled on communal matrical culture...Kurland weafves a visual fuction of a place before time.. (Jan Akivogas)

What i love about kurlands work, is it has that cult of femmine, mary daly, mid 70s vibe, the chalice and the blade stuff, but its also really uncanny, dark and magikal things in teh woods, filled with ghostly presence,s makes teh idea of birth, and the cult of birth, into a dangerous thing,. fertillity, or fertility cults, had a intimate connection between what was born and what would die, and the femminsit art that reclaimed those cults, thot all was kind and peaceful.the work is so strong because the work is so dark.

60 ooo pounds of free books given to british boys. the books are the usual reactionary collection of colonial and violent adventures, that sort of give children premission to engage in acts of destruction, it also means, like the dangerous books for boys, children are learning skilsl that are activley out of date, so instead of learning how to put up a wireless network, or get around on the subway, they learn this false arcadian vision of killing rabbits or making shelter. a kid is more likely to get lost in a strange enighbourhood then in the woods these days. (all of that said, the criculum at saint johns was filled with this shit, with the boys books, adn it was v, idelogical, but i learnt to love the old birtish adventures, but they put the adventure over the violence--so i had to learn on my own what haggard or kipling meant to people under the empire. (though i do like that comics, sf, fantasy, etc are much more common)

14 women, 4 minorites (which is the other thing, we read in schools to teach us about people around us, other voices and other rooms, i dont think that this list will do that)

here is the full list which i will write about more, i think

ray and i talked about this:

rneilson: The boys with the reading gap are the ones you have nothing in common with.
me: 16. King Solomon’s Mines by H Rider Haggard, Penguin
21. The Hobbit by J RR Tolkien, HarperCollins
rneilson: I don't know the significance of Haggard.
me: its actually not a bad list
Haggard we read in St Johns
rneilson: No, it's not.
me: i worry that it means that boys will be segrated, that gender norming will exist in larger qualities
rneilson: You're looking at the should, instead of the is. Again.
Boys are already segregated.
They don't read much.
me: why dont they?
rneilson: Girls read more, and get better marks to go with that.
That question si what they're trying to address.
me: is it because boys are normed to be "Acive" and they are activeley discouraged from reading by their peers?
honest question
rneilson: Depends, I think.
I don't know, and I don't think they know, if it's a question of discouragement or simply lack of opportunity.
me: cause i think that women are encouraged to read, and have been historically, because its passive, its "safe", like needlework
look at the regency discussions of novels
which i dont think has changed at all
rneilson: Okay, so are you asking about the larger trend of boys not reading, or this list?
Sent at 10:32 AM on Monday
me: the list isnt bad
but im not sure we can teach boys to read, by just giving them calvin and hobbes
rneilson: Yeah, but it's a start.
me: and in schools, reading is about socialisation and ideology, and i am worried about the subtext of this, in relation to women and visibie minorities
im esp worried about the rise of, in england, nostalgia for a false arcadia
like the success of the dangerous book for boys, etc
rneilson: Too high-level.
me: and i am wondering about if it matters if people read
what do you mean too high level

Access Denied, one of several similar interventions in and around London.

the cicumcellons from the 5th century, have become my new favourite xian heretics. they were so obssesed with the idea of martyrdom, that instead of hoping to get killed by preaching the good news, they went out into the areas around city, and started clubbing people, the idea was that people would club them back, tehy would die, adn then go to heaven. a proactive suicide for the lord.

Phillips, et al Contemparary.

1) phillips is really good at getting the maximum prices for conflicted, unstable, untested, emerging, etc artists, like almsot a million for a brown drawing, or 6 figures for richard phillips.
2) nothing really new here, the big items (a hirst, a peyton) seem the dregs of other auctions
3) even the warhols are late 80s, the judds are kind of lurid, the ryman is dreary, good prices for medicore work.
4) 466k for a Kawara, which means his entire ouevere is worth billions, how do you choose one over the others, how is a 1999 worth 150k less than a 1976? (is it the date, do you buy it accordinf to whats availble or to a date that is impt personally?)
Christies Afternoon

1) Sherman's prices seem to be in two categories (film stills=stratsopheric, everything else=not so stratsoprhic)
2) koons easy fun sieres is selling about as well as his vacuums, but not as well as his silver peices, and people like donkies more than walruses
3) jo baer cant sell, even at low 5 figures, this kind of makes me sad.
4) for basically what accounts to graphite on paper, martins drawings of grids from the late 60s radically change, i cant tell the difference b/w the one here sold for 110 an the one sold earlier for 800k or so
5) there gets to be a time, where the work drawings of conceptual sculptors become as valuable as the sculptures themselves, tehy become legitimatized as art, it happened to judd in the late 80s and it is happening ot Whiteread right now.
6) i like serras oil stick drawings much better than his sculptures and them selling for for a 1/4m or so, each, other people agree w. me
7) on kawara seems to epehermal and conceptual to be worth the prices people are paying for them, a drawing a day for the last 40 years means aprox 14 600 works, how the hell is one of them worth 600k?
8) baldeeassi will break 1m/image next season, i bet.
9) lawler, two at 50, per, some of her strongest work.
10) the sherman equation might be more bout how much tit shes showing, and less about the film still nto film still thing.
11) basquit, haring, prince, sherman, pettibone, who would have picked these 5 to last from the east village 80s?
12) less of the yale crowd that broke in the 90s, only one dana schutz, a handful of currins and yuskavages, for example, and they seem to be worth less then they were last season.
13) you should have bought and sold essenhigh 3 years ago, her prices have halved or worse, so have cottons.
14) god is there huge swaths of bad painting sold for cheap enough that it doesnt matter what sells or not (ie 10-50k), bread and butter of these auctions, pages of medicority.
15) same 6 chinese artists, going for huge prices, including Zhang Xiaogang for mid to high 6 figures. i dont get him.
16) buying a sugimoto theater or ocean, is a lot like buying a bmw, cold, formal, neoclassical, kind of boring, well constructed, about the same price point, regardless of the image.
christies morning

1) wessleman keeps going up in price, from auction to auction, a charcoal drawing from the great aemrican nudes went for 880k.
2) add Indianna to that list of 2nd tier popists.
3) lots of mid priced debuffet
4) de kooning still confuses me, with some drawings selling above market, and some work bought in, i think he is much more in flux then he ever has been before
5) lewis upward pattern continus
6) a really garish stella sqaure peice, and a bright green albers both sold high, which might make my simple chromophobic arguement moot.
7) i think that warhols gun and knives sieres from the 80s are one of v. few places where you might still get a bargin for him. (others include rosarch and his body building work, from about the same period)
8) the busier and more chaotic twomblies continue to sell better then the simpler ones.
9) i think there was only one hockney, in teh last 4 auctions, a nice but not fantastic landscape, which seems strange to me.
10) god, i love mel ramos, and w. wesselman prices eeking up into bluechip status, he might be the next craze
11) the photo realists continue to eek there way up into something resembling respectablity, i wonder who the next lost school will be

Christies Evening

1) This is really Balderssai's coming out as a major figure, with several fairly impt work going for more than 1/2m and one of his fantastic instructional text peices going for 4.4
2) Morris Louis for 2.9m ?!?!
3) Warhol Disaster Painting (Green Car Crash) hit Picasso prices, at 71.7, Lemon Marylin for 28.4, so those two paitnings, 100m.
4) are people buy 1980s martin because they work better in corperate offices, or because teh mid 60s ones are all in musuems. (66 drawing here for 4.84, another 65 one for 4.7, so it might be a price thing)
5) early johns i thot would go for 30 or 40 went for 17
6) totally wrong about de kooning, the sothebys auction was a minor blip.
7) hesse works on paper, for 4 or 5, several of them, seems to be because no one is shipping her latex work, for fear of losing it entirely.
8) more wesselman lips, god i love wesselman lips
9) a marlboro cowboy by prince went for 2.84, its better then the one that sold for a million three auctions ago, but they estimated it for 900k, which seems to be lowballing it, so i dont know why they did that.
sothebys contemp. day auctions:
(483 lots, ill wait to let someone do the totals)

1. its a shame when cornell is so under valued that you can get one of his best collages for under 60k and he still rarely breaks a million for the boxes. i keep thinking why but the usual reasons (prolifgacy, unpleasent personal life, sweetness, tendency towards self mythology, kitsch, etc) cover a number of other artists whos work regularlly breaks the 10m celling.
2) kline works on paper, one bought in, several b/w 80 and 120, two excellent ones for thrice that bought in, he will be quickly sought by people looking for bargains quickly.
3) watching karel appels market go up is doing nothing for european abstraction in general.
4) all the albers look the same, and watching what sells and what doesnt is an amusing act in colour choice (the less or more auestre he colours the better the work seems to do, a grey and white one going for 448k, a bright green and yellow one bought in) (see also the 2.4m paid for the early Stella Black and White Maze)
5) i was wrong about the dekooning market in the last auction, as a really subpar mid 60s nude almost broke 1m
6) two or three really nice nevelsons in the mid 6 figure range, and a new survey at one of the big new york musuems in the fal, means that her rise is upcoming, ive waited almost a decade for this. (though an almost perfect white box construction from the mid 60s is criminally underpriced at 66k)
7) the twomblies where he shows less control are much more saleable then the more chaotic ones, and like a locker room, bigger is always better.
8) is it wrong that all gotliebs look the same to me?
9) who the hell is paying 254k for four wrapped magazines by christo, are christos inflated prices a way t patronize large public projects, making clients seem like patrons?
10) i wonder if the really ugly goopy early riopelle was sold to udell, does he have high six figures to throw around?(esp when other similar examples didnt sell at 40k)
11) warhol is still a lisc. to print money. perierr bottles for 390k, gretzky for 369, 4 paintings over a million.
12) lichenstien, ruscha, wesselman, wesley, theibaud, etc are doing really well, for people priced out of the warhol, johns, rauscenberg trio i think, a really gorgeous theibaud landscape breaking 1m suggests that he is not viewed as just the pie/deli guy.
13) is pettibones presence at auctions just a way to get a bargin warhol or stella, do people who buy them try to pass them off for warhols, does this say something deep about his tendencies at approrition (and do the bootleg sieres suffer teh same fate?)
14) frankenthaler and lewis doing well, w. gemma (a large stripe painting by louis, breaking mid 6 figures), but noland at 60k or 150k were both bought in, one was sold at 84k and another at 96k noland seems to be the last one to be pulled up by the colourfield revival, any reason why? (noland, i think, is the strongest painter of this crew, and should be making albers or stella numbers)
15) martin drawings from the mid 60s are doing what her paintings were doing 5 years ago.
16) my thing about ryman and surfaces might only apply to the work done in the 70s.
17) ramos' tits are one of the great pleasures of 20th arts
18) estes and surfaces is the other one, no longer are either being udner rated
19) kusuma is taking crazy all the way to the bank (one of the few success stories of femminist recliamation)
20) is the olfili market softening, w. the entire yba mess, because a fantastic afro queen drawing should go for more than 27k, adn a chapman bros being bought in at an estimate for 90, and tim/sue webster losing 200k over night?
21) madonna buying the untitled film stills for 1m might have been the great deal, if individual stills are going for a 10th of that
22) what happens in 5 years when all those asprisn fall off the tomaselli collages
23) i really want kiki smiths deer drawings for the show, but im scared of her gallerist, but not her prices 60k for 6 is a fucking bargin.
23) the chinese market is still "shit hot", and i have no idea what to look at and what to see, its like he east village in the 80s, americans are even outsourcing their art markets, i dont know whats good whats bad whats hype and whats genuinely interestnig work (same w. the new japanese artists, i think i like mr, murakami, i dont like nara at all, and achebe(sp) is fantastic, but the prices seem inflated, which might make me a racist)
24) mccraken reaching 6 figures is fantastic, tuttle steady at 5 is more than okay.
25) more photogs are being less and less ghettoized.

post war sotheby thots: (a little over a 1/4 billion total sales)

1) no pollocks sold (3 went unsold, two gaurenteed, one that sothebys had a stake in)
2) one of three big rothkos upcoming didnt break 100 (i mean 72 and change is still huge, but i wonder if this is the first auction season in half a decade when a most expensive painting ever doesnt happen (irises, picasso, then de kooning, if a really nice johns flag or target comes up, the narrative would be complete)
3) koons has now become a blue chip, as has cecily brown
4) next year its going to be impossible to find a prince for under 2 or a balderssai for under one, for post mondernist photogs obsessed with the epehemeral, this says something interesting, im just not sure what
5) w. warhols worst work overpriced, and the same w. johns&rauschenberg, 2nd teir pop artists (including, in this auction lichenstien and wessleman (best example of this is his smokign manquette from 75, an impossibly glam, deeply fetishitic work, that went for 5.84 now and would ahve gone for less then 1 5 years ago) are going to go thru the roof. (dietch bought the really silly/vapid 1965 girl in a mirror for like 4.08, which is crazy; even crazier is the 1972 green vase by roy going for 4.2)
6) you can still get a nice kline for realtivley cheap, the two de kooning women sold for under market, and pollock is in the middle of a correction, i wonder if the death of modernism, at least in a capital sense will finally be completeld this season. (or maybe they arent buying shit, the pollocks are subpar, and the dekoonings are the melted barbies he did when drinking robbed him of his colourist skills)
7) half completed ryman canvases for 784k, there is an essay to be written abuot the fact that the mroe itneresting his surfaces/tensions are, the less marketable they are--the work that goes for millions is the really slick, plasticy stuff. (i wonder if the same thing is happening with the late 80s, early 90s brassy martins, as opposed to her really gentle work from the mid 60s, but then a lot of teh mid 60s stuff isnt coming to market.
8) all the pro colourfield agit prop thats gone on in the last couple of years has pushed morris' canvases high, not thru the roof, but they are jacknifing
9)an early, polite currin went unsold, which might mean that he is stuck in a signture style, and that he isnt iconic enough to let work that is on the edges of that style to be sold to musuems as teachign tools (like the 1959 Martin at Seattle, or the abex canvases of lichenstien in LA)
10) warhol is still a lisc. to print money
finished impeerial grunts last night, and the thing is, the usual arguements could apply, about how he doesnt treat women well, he is not critically disengaged with what he is reporting on, that he ignores, or overglosses the history of the ameriacn interventions in the sites he chooses (esp the phillipines), how he is uncritical of what the soilders tell him, how he refuses to engage in history (for example the united fruit wars and its relation to current activites in columbia) and current policies (ie drug policy and how it relates to the taliban or farc) , or how his views of the levant are v. much informed by an orientalist reading--the dude needs to read said, stat. all of that is legitmate, and i can cite text if i need to, and its a standard leftist critique of texts that are supportive of military forces.

the thing that (& i think this is the nature of the project) it did for me, was to actually listen to the soilders as they spoke. the chapter on mongolia, where the residents of teh country discussed gladness for the army there, because it protected them from both china and russia, or how unlike most anarachist and marxist critics of the us interactions in south america, farc's position is related much more to capital and power then it is to liberating indigenous people, or how the forces in afghanistan are slippery, growing beards and giving out power bars...

he doesnt answer the centreal paradox of the interventionist army for me, how can you bomb the fuck out of a country, and still help them, how can you set out bombs and candy, and consider it a moral equal (but then, i think that the arab gulf states building temples in badran or east africa is the same as americans selling levis, elvis, jesus and coca-cola, but im a cynical sob like that.), but i dont think the text was intended to answer that question, or to put it another way, his point of view is so strange and alien to me, that all of that other side, diveristy of opinon shit, present, and the sympathy i got from the us military aside, there was so radical a split in the way we think, that i dont think that the book would have ever given me all the answers to all the questions i had.

sidenote:
i was esp. curious about his reaction to ethopia/eritera. which was the only section that struck me as wrong-headed, so when Hareare has time, i want to talk to him about it.

One of the Many Reasons the New York Post should continue to prosper.

watching paul wolfowitZ lose it beyond losing it, has been a pleasure. harpers discusses the verdict.

ben alper is a photographer, whos website features three categories, one called color, one called polaorids. his polaroids are fantastic, subtle, wavering, qautidian things, mananging to avoid the luridness expected of the genre, and his colour shots are really subtle, slightly decaying blues and greens. he has that new urbanism, kind of look, and its not unique work, but excellent examples of the genre. (his bio isnt working, and he says hes from the new england school of photog, but his work looks western, almost prarie, colorado or nebraska, so i dont know where hes from)

fallwell dead, and just for him, a gospel passage:

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

the zacheus link comes from joe, who i think is back from isreal, which means if god is good, im going to get tranny pop.

AnthonySEaston (11:48:07 PM): zaccheus
AnthonySEaston (11:48:12 PM): what do you make of these guys
AnthonySEaston (11:48:23 PM): they want to talk at the synod for the anglicans
theminorthirds (11:48:30 PM): oh hang on. i'm writing something.
theminorthirds (11:58:49 PM): uh
AnthonySEaston (12:00:03 AM): if queer is a sieres of actions...should they be allowed to talk
theminorthirds (12:00:38 AM): well, first off, they don't seem to have a good grasp on the bible.
AnthonySEaston (12:01:50 AM): no they dont
AnthonySEaston (12:02:00 AM): but then neither does spong or bawer
theminorthirds (12:02:20 AM): When Jesus spoke to the woman caught in adultery, he told her, "I do not condemn you. Go and leave your life of sin" (John 8:11). God's message to us is likewise balanced. Unfortunately, in our experience, the full truth of the Gospel has too often been reduced by its human interpreters to either compassion without righteousness or righteousness without compassion.
theminorthirds (12:02:49 AM): i mean that seems like a total misreading of that passage
theminorthirds (12:02:54 AM): though i don't remember the entire passage
AnthonySEaston (12:03:13 AM): im not sure it is
theminorthirds (12:03:28 AM): it presents jesus
theminorthirds (12:03:33 AM): not condemning someone
theminorthirds (12:03:43 AM): and changing their life
theminorthirds (12:03:48 AM): and they want to
theminorthirds (12:03:53 AM): condemn someone
theminorthirds (12:03:55 AM): and change their life
theminorthirds (12:04:02 AM): without jesus's say-so
theminorthirds (12:04:28 AM): it seems like "going away from sin" there happens when jesus wants it to
theminorthirds (12:04:40 AM): but there is no condemning those he does not divert from "sin"
AnthonySEaston (12:04:53 AM): that said, i think that most people underestimates christs wrath
theminorthirds (12:05:22 AM): well, sure.
theminorthirds (12:05:28 AM): and why is that?
AnthonySEaston (12:05:38 AM): im suprised that they didnt mention the eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven line
theminorthirds (12:05:41 AM): because that isn't an interesting jesus.
AnthonySEaston (12:06:02 AM): i think a morally complicated jesus is an interesting jesus
theminorthirds (12:06:18 AM): sure
theminorthirds (12:06:30 AM): but then you have to sorta give up
theminorthirds (12:06:40 AM): because you get serious mixed messages from him
AnthonySEaston (12:06:50 AM): well, thats crossons point, isnt it
theminorthirds (12:06:50 AM): so you have to stop worrying about it and trust in him
AnthonySEaston (12:06:59 AM): and not giev up, but live in the anxious mystery
theminorthirds (12:07:07 AM): well... that's up to you.
AnthonySEaston (12:07:43 AM): up to xians
theminorthirds (12:08:02 AM): well, individually yes
theminorthirds (12:08:07 AM): jesus clearly goes case by case
theminorthirds (12:08:10 AM): in the bible
theminorthirds (12:08:33 AM): also the entire narrative of the bible is god/jesus learning how to deal with a) fallible people and b) his own temper
theminorthirds (12:09:11 AM): esp as organized
AnthonySEaston (12:09:21 AM): thats the problem, is that the assumption is, that a deeply morally complicated man, who refuses to engage in one law, but is w.i his own tradition, is assumed to give standard council
theminorthirds (12:09:23 AM): or at least up to the gospels
theminorthirds (12:09:38 AM): right
AnthonySEaston (12:09:46 AM): im reading acts, and im wondering how paul did it
theminorthirds (12:10:02 AM): frequent flyer miles up the wazoo
AnthonySEaston (12:10:08 AM): how the missionaries in acts stripped the nuance to make a cohesive mmessage.
AnthonySEaston (12:11:24 AM): maybe thats my problem with it
AnthonySEaston (12:11:27 AM): but eevn paul
AnthonySEaston (12:11:50 AM): the eunuch and phyillis versus its better to be married then burned
AnthonySEaston (12:14:12 AM): so i dont know if there is a choesive message of sexuality in the gospels, and if there isnt, then isnt celibacy another lifestyle option that should be discussed
theminorthirds (12:14:38 AM): it's fine if they want to witness that god turned them away from their whatever
theminorthirds (12:14:48 AM): it's not fine for them to play god and condemn
theminorthirds (12:15:01 AM): it's not fine for them to insist that anyone can be touched by god to turn away from their whatever
AnthonySEaston (12:16:15 AM): but in their experience, they were touched by god to turn away, from what they consider sins, emperically, that is as legitimate as god embraced my cocksucking, no?
theminorthirds (12:18:17 AM): well, yes
AnthonySEaston (12:18:37 AM): and hat narrative should be shared
theminorthirds (12:18:49 AM): god is in that mysterious force that made them no longer interested in cocksucking just like god is in that mysterious force that made you realize it was great to be cocksucking
AnthonySEaston (12:18:50 AM): no matter how much it makes us feel uncofomfortable
AnthonySEaston (12:19:06 AM): well i wouldnt say great...
theminorthirds (12:19:17 AM): megawexxome?!
AnthonySEaston (12:20:16 AM): i would say holy
AnthonySEaston (12:20:23 AM): like ginsberg level holy.
theminorthirds (12:22:08 AM): set apart?
AnthonySEaston (12:23:40 AM): that, and about footnote to howl as well
theminorthirds (12:24:44 AM): oh

AnthonySEaston (8:48:54 AM): and youve seen when attack lately
PreCurWV (8:49:10 AM): Oh, yeah.
AnthonySEaston (8:49:29 AM): about the mary jane statue
PreCurWV (8:49:38 AM): I worry that the inherent ugliness of the object and the sadness of the fact that someone might actually find it sexually appealing has been lost.
AnthonySEaston (8:50:39 AM): i go thru previews every month, and i see shit thats as offensive, every time.
AnthonySEaston (8:50:41 AM): or worse
AnthonySEaston (8:50:50 AM): rape imagery, less clothes, abuse,
AnthonySEaston (8:51:01 AM): and i am wondering why this one pissed everyone off
AnthonySEaston (8:51:04 AM): honest question
PreCurWV (8:53:14 AM): Well... it's a little difficult for me to say exactly. I thought it was kind of a hideous, witless affront to what could be and have been sort of witty approaches to the same subject matter.
PreCurWV (8:53:37 AM): It's not conceptually all that offensive, but it's really tone-deaf, so maybe that's it.
AnthonySEaston (8:54:11 AM): its pretty fucking offensive
AnthonySEaston (8:54:34 AM): but tone deaf misogyny and sexualised violence is what i expect from marvel
PreCurWV (8:55:17 AM): Well, yeah, especially when it comes to licensed items.
AnthonySEaston (8:55:29 AM): or DC
PreCurWV (8:56:28 AM): Oh, for sure.
AnthonySEaston (8:57:42 AM): or large chunks of indie comics or Dark Horse or or or
PreCurWV (8:58:01 AM): Exactly.
AnthonySEaston (8:58:24 AM): so its pretty fucking offensive, but it maitnains a stnd
PreCurWV (8:59:16 AM): And it is kind of odd to attack the object, which is garden-variety hideous and tacky, instead of the standard.
AnthonySEaston (8:59:54 AM): thats the point im making
AnthonySEaston (9:00:08 AM): lets look at previews this month
PreCurWV (9:00:46 AM): Do I have to? I always want to blind myself when I flip through certain pubs' stuff.
AnthonySEaston (9:01:17 AM): sorry
AnthonySEaston (9:01:28 AM): i want to see if this is any more egergeious3
AnthonySEaston (9:01:51 AM): http://previews.diamondcomics.com/public/news_images/40480_85192_1.jpg
PreCurWV (9:02:36 AM): Too run-of-the-mill. It has no attempt at satirical intent.
AnthonySEaston (9:02:58 AM): true, i didnt pick up the real previews this month
PreCurWV (9:03:24 AM): I did. I'll have to go through and see how much horrible Lady Death crap is in there.

Flickr, with millions of members, provides an amorphous borderless environment for social interaction. People in London or New York or Montana are the same, and a kind of specific aesthetic emerges. This aesthetic is tied into a sense of very specific place. A tension and kind of irony emerges. It provides an opportunity for very local and intimate discourses to emerge.

The French urbanist Debord used to make these maps of Paris, where he lived. The maps would be his personal depictions of where he went on his daily trips. They provided a personal history of the city. His history. We are all now making that map, and making that map explicitly public. What I want to do is track what that pattern means. The photographers here have an aching desire for specific aesthetics or narratives. The land comes up through pixels and electrons.

How the photographers negotiate the tension between an audience of millions, and a specific reality of one, is what I find fascinating. Sometimes it is of the quotidian documentation of work (The shots of Moos farm in Montana) or the effects of capital in working class neighborhoods (Lost in Van Nuys) or an interest in local histories both ancient (Simon K’s exhaustive documenting of English Parish Churches) and modern (The fading glories of rust belt America, as taken by Toledo’s Joey Harrison). The point is, that what was formerly a local, and personal act has become an interaction of global meeting points. Nothing and Everything is local. By presenting it in real life, as a tangible object, in a traditional gallery space, there is a hope to mark this new movement.

isabella blow killed heself last week, and its fucking me up, isabella was one of my heros, not for discovering mcqueen and tracey and dahl (though thank her for that), but for the fuck money, raw eccentricity and willingness to take aesthetic risks, the willingness to make her life explicity about aesthetics for their own sake. its part of my personal mythology that a willingness to do this, will mean that you would surrive longer than most, the uncomprising self awareness is a salve against the world. i know this isnt true, but i need it to be. blow drinking bleach just shatters it.
