i was dancing last night, with boys, and girls, with myself, and listening to the horns, and seeing that fabric banner, about how we should welcome the grace of god, and thinking about the sally ann bands, and also, how the band leader quoted Wesley, and also how context, the visible context of the every day, of being in a church, regardless of the pyschogeographic ghosts of that specific church, and how that was holy as well...

the rest of the night was amazing, but the bands and the dancing, i felt the spirit of the holy Booths, of the holy ghost, and maybe this is the mystic bullshit jesus freak that occasionally pops up in me, like an inconveienent hard on in the middle of math class, but yeah, the queerness and the holiness merged into bodies, crashed smashed banged and collided into bodies.

Artist Statement for Time Raiser: These 6 images, based on Jacques Lacan's pyschoanalytical concept of the mirror stage, continue my ideas of photography as a tool that allows for intervention of personhood in found spaces. Lacan has written "the mirror stage is a phenomenon to which I assign a twofold value. In the first place, it has historical value as it marks a decisive turning-point in the mental development of the child. In the second place, it typifies an essential libidinal relationship with the body image" In these images, I work through the idea, that not only is the mirror stage unlimited to childhood but it is an ever renewing presence. Every time a subject moves past a mirror, he or she uncovers themselves, as beings who are part of a community, and as corporeal beings. As someone who rarely works through their body, and who lives in a culture that distorts ideas of both libido and flesh, I find that this project extends and literalises the metaphor, that documents the explicit moving through the invisible and visible patterns of cities.

I mean its work, but its not labor. You have professional obligation like any adult, but it's fun to solve problems. It's fun to sit there by yourself with no one telling you what to do. They're just gone and those dead guys from the 80s should be writing most of what I'm writing now, and I should be left to play blackjack...

You just go up and and up and up, and all of a sudden you've got three e-husbands, a broken down Porsche, a bunch of leather clothes, some haute coture accesories, and no prospects at all...

I think Don Judd, Dan Flavin, and Andy Warhol... conceived of themselves as the Augustan artists of the American empire. The Vietnam War ruined the moment, but they did it. They created this steady-state, history-less, past-less, future-less moment in art with no prescient and really no consequences--it's just this stuff--purely American stuff, totally abstract and totally bland. and I Like that. I don't like too much blood or too many explosions I like bland. I like blank.

10 things about the new lund album, a small outline

1. four songs in the middle do not fit into the general themes (Hard on Equipment, Tough on the Job), Family Reunion (not a Hank Jr track much to my sadness), Especially A Paint, and Ciselas Revenge)
   
2. those themes being history, the West, war, honour, violence, and masculinity
3. the general theme was supposed to be about horses, and it has a great, epic song about the history of horses, from the hussars to the mounties, a sort of cowboy reworking of sympathy for the devil, a song about the calvary, and a mournful ballad called my saddle horse has died (he has done horse songs before, including the lovely and reverent She Won't Come to Me) (c/c w. Dylan's all the pretty horses)
   
4. history from the general (horse solider) to the v. spec (brother brigham, brother young (one of the few works about the mormons that actually groks the argot, which is almost impossible unless one is born into the culture, growing up in southern alberta, this is not difficult, as my other says everyone has at least a cousin and he writes about them in several songs, including one on this album "the mormons and the drinkers and the mormons who either) and the tale of reagon era contra's student visa
5. takes work that has been incredibly controversial (ie LDS history or the Contras), and makes them into self contained tragic narratives, as an attempt to sort things down the middle
   
6. the work is v. well written
   
7. aside from the writing, the music works, from the fifes and drum of calvary, onwards, it pulses, regimented, quick, and inelegant, not quite rough
8. he calls it his serious album, it does seem more ambitious then it was, but he cannot give up his masterful, choruses, not quite hook laden, because hook laden suggests something more modern then he invokes here, ear worms of the golden age
   
9. in this sense, the (rollicking?) instrumentation, the cleverness of the words etc, are placed in relief against the tragedies of the words, of the narratives, sometimes not for the good (compare student vistas, with its soon to be iconic chorus, w. the anti pop drudgery of Bear/Eagle by Kristofferson, written not as history but as news)
   
10. all of that said, his ability to make both (unfashionable?) retrograde values, history, and complicated ethical situations into basically pop, well constructed commercial music, is a weird kind of dark magic, a kind of masonic alchemy, a gift i appreciate immensely.

McDarrah was the first major village voice photog, and took lots of the photos of the beats/new york school you remember, i didnt know him until his recent death, and i think that this photo, well composed, but obvious Kennedy as Christ, Christ deposed, the hope in the slums, is one of the sentimental peices--but i like it, because i like remembering sometimes people used to believe in curing poverty, and that their used to be slums on the lower east side.

Post War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale, Christies, Yankee Dollars

1. 50 out of 61 lots sold for more than a million, 9 for over 10m, highest, 35m for Untilted (Blue Yellow and Orange from 55, Rothko), a signifiant amount sold for more than their estimates, with only A late 70s Richter Abstraction, two Calder wire sculpture, a Judd stacking object, an early quite muted Ryman, going unsold.
   
2. Two Warhol works went under estimate, including an iconic teal liz, but the low estimate was 25 and it went for 23, so don't feel too bad (Warhol had 10 lots sold, from the early 60s to the late 80s, totally 64, 214, 700)
3. Yoshimito Nara's prices keep rising to rather absurd rates
   
4. Piney Woods Nurse, one of the most contempary of the works in question, was high estimated at 2.2, and went for over 6.

as a man thinketh a seires of paintings by andrew brandou, about jim jones, are unsettling, combining lo fi aesthetics, mexican graphics, golden books style illustration styles, and funny animal comics into a narrative about jim jones. it seems an obvious way of presenting the narrative, but it really seems to be an updating, of the instincts of people like hicks, imn a deeply critical, cynical way, saying that the formal/aesthetic choices of american outsider faiths lead to disaster as much as the theological choices.

2. this is the first album where she is not credited as a song writer, only as a producer, and much of the album is about the creation and destruction of images--combined with dated ellen van unworth photographs, it suggests the common wisdom, that she is not listening to anyone who can help her, is wrong. the opposite is true here--even with out writing any of the songs at all, she has too many people to listen to. the more people surrounding her, the less control she has. which means the album is an anthology of late post millennial trends in popular music, an inadvertent, already dated time capsule.
   
3. she mentions her self twice or three times a song in the third person, and the first words are this is britney bitch (the only swear in the britney corpus, the only swear in the harry potter novels---btw). all of this third personing does not provide much needed critical distance, it makes her sound dissociative.
   
4. its also an album of paranoia--but the weird thing, is that everyone is looking at her, attacking her, so the paranoia is the wrong word, its more of an accurate example of her life, her chaos, her mental health, etc, but most importantly, her pleasure. addictive personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, its the first album made crazy not by coke or booze but an over dose of fame.
   
5. but the going out is documented, the songs careen wildly, crash into each other, change tempo, vocals, and instrumentation, producers and what is produced. harmonies are dropped, added, mixed in and mixed out, it becomes polyphonic and then singularlly driving in a matter of seconds. it is almost a folk work--like what harold finster would do if he had a capacity for clubbing and a taste for bisexual tail. (which is my round about way of saying, it is intended as an album, a statement, a document that is 60 minutes long, ambitious for someone who's genius came previously in 3 minute bites)
   

i think its a brilliant album, unhinged, strange, pleasure seeking, and throughly crazy--i also don't think its traditionally good.

emory douglass, a poster artist for the black panthers, from the late 60s until the early 80s, has a commmon, south american inspired radical style, and a rhetoric that now seems quaint. he has a new show at musuem of contemparary art in LA, as a designer--one of the things that moca has done v. well in the last few years is the historicise the contributions their city has made not only to political but cutlural discourse. this is part of that project.
