scott pilgrim the comic and scott pilgrim the movie, are a sort of post-indie, post apatow discussion of how to be an adult, and how to be masculine, in a world that recognizes the misogyny/homophobia of the world, and the exhaustion of modes of representation. You are not supposed to like Pilgrim, or at least the hatred of him is modulated by how he grows older, and who are considered villans, are now humans. The movie does this less then the books (Esp. w. the charachter of Envy), and the film is much more streamlined, and deals with knives and envy worse, but the point is sill present. This awl article argues that in the books, the pr esence of female narratives is much stronger, and that the movie disallows MAlley's femminism, which might actually have a point.
