AnthonySEaston (1:17:51 AM): the thing is its going to seem perverse, but i like britney in a way i never liked jagger
pattismithsmense (1:19:11 AM): pseudo differentiation - same effect, different face - after all, britney went from virgin to hit me to hit up wot mamma, and that's just the last 5 years
pattismithsmense (1:19:39 AM): although i gotts say niehter micks nor birtney's lips have ever done a damn thing for my hose
AnthonySEaston (1:20:03 AM): i think satisfaction is the pivot, and well jagger never had one,
pattismithsmense (1:20:50 AM): no, it's all illusion, which britney does better - yes you may open my vagina with your massive artillery shell as opposed to i'm a horny british man will you suck me
AnthonySEaston (1:21:51 AM): i dont even think she has a vagina, she has something cleaner and more precise
pattismithsmense (1:22:06 AM): imaginable vagina
pattismithsmense (1:22:19 AM): without the blood, sweat and tears ;-)
AnthonySEaston (1:23:11 AM): thats why we hate her kid and her husband, she made the vagina real
pattismithsmense (1:24:14 AM): yeah exactly... although we don't seem to hate jessica simpson as much, but I guess she never claimed purity
AnthonySEaston (1:24:51 AM): well she dropped it quickly, and we are hating her--have you seen the nick news, hes weeping like the wronged woman, and posing like the cover of honcho
all shall be well all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well julian of norwich

more research on lyle lovett:
Stand by yr man orignally on the 1989 LL and the Large Band:
"a disarmingly earnest cover of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man,”
matt delinger, nyer, 2004-02-23
The singer, many of whose songs have a strain of misogyny, capped his set on a note of twisted humor by belting out the Tammy Wynette classic ''Stand By Your Man.''
Stephen Holden, NY Times, 1988
The most interesting thing about Houston's own Lyle Lovett is the way he's never quite what people assume he is. Even when people see past the surface of his laconic, gentlemanly demeanor, they seem to get it wrong. The Crying Game notwithstanding, the disturbing thing about his cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" doesn't lie in gender-bending or homosexual panic: It's the almost subliminal way the lyric goes from tearful female masochism to leering male sadism without changing a single word, just because of the gender of the singer. Lovett slips a lot of (perhaps ironic) sadism and misogyny into his lyrics, from the bedroom ropin'-and-ridin' imagery in "Cowboy Man" to the murderous husband of "Pontiac" ("And I might just leave her still / after the sun goes down"). The theoretically down-home Lovett is also a bit of a cosmopolitan sophisticate: He met ex-wife Julia Roberts while acting in a Robert Altman film, and on his latest CD, My Baby Don't Tolerate, he offhandedly boasts, "I've been to Paris / and I don't mean Texas / I met Wim Wenders / One time in London." Still, how many of Lovett's fans care to parse his layers of reference and irony is a moot issue: He remains a great, subtle jazz-via-country singer, and his Large Band is a force of musical nature.
Stephen Feingold, Houstan Press, Sept 15 2005
(That lyric is a refutation or a fuck you to WE Aint The Jet Set)
.. When critics accused him of misogyny, Lovett responded on his third album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, with a deadpan version of "Stand By Your Man."
Texas Monthly, Sept, 1992
If you've really listened, you appreciate the fact that his recordings are beautifully crafted. When I first heard his straight-as-an-arrow rendition of the Tammy Wynette classic "Stand By Your Man," I was knocked out by the perfection of the arrangement, and by how close his voice comes to the edge when he holds that note while singing "...give him all the love you ca-a-a-a-a-a-a-n." After spending years trying to figure out his angle, I've finally come to realize that there is no angle..

american mythic cryptic beat bullshit, with all the violence
derrida or lacan who talked about jacob

the work is more difficult to lsiten to, more angular, more spiky then the stones,
mac the finger, etc
1000 telephones that dont ring--the impossiblity of communication in an age of communicaiton, freshman, wank wank wank
61 is 66 is becuse its easier to rhyme
3rd daughter, 5th son, family, incest themes, etc, its all in here
the squelling, carnival, whirls and pulls again afetr the 3rd and fourth verse and again towards the end...
just go to the dylanologists, they do the hard work of unpacking

rolling stones (out of my element, cant write about it well)
the tambourine.
the instrumental orginal opening
i cant get no, i cant get no, i cant get no (the stutter start literalises shooting the wad--the whole song is about shooting yr wad b/4 the time that is approite.
cant be a man/cause he doesnt smoke/the same brand of cigarettes as me
the terror of unstable gender, or something like that?
its a criticism of capitalism, a conflation of sex and capital, a sort of commenting on women as sexual beings, and them as whores?
the half sentences, the constant repetion, the grinding guitars, the propuslive ryhthym meant to be a metonymy of coitus, but that metonyomy seems almost a parody? (5 years later, that same soundtrack becomes sexphobic, becomes afraid of pleasures and bodies, with punk)
is this proto punk
why c ant i read this?

woodie this land is yr land--
things to note
1) the abstraction of the locations, the iconic nature of the locations
2) how it really seems fairly costal (ie first verse: california/ny highland/redwood forrest/gulfstream water)
3) hiway/skyway/below me/valley
4) even from minnesota, its about the idea of america, as opposed to the reality of america, (but then, so is america the beautiful, my country tis of thee, et al et al, even battle hymn (vowells essay in briars and roses edited by marcus)
5) dustbowl, voices chanting may be less ideal, less progressive, the hints not stripped from populist usage.
6) the mythical sixth verse, and touch on that...
7) what the hell does sparkling sounds of diamond deserts mean, people forget how rhetorical, how constructed a singer guthrie is.
8) he also cant sing (ie all my favourite singers couldnt sing)

Lyle Lovett--Stand By Your Man
(note the self reflective irony, the wit of lovett, and his work as a sort of anti cowboy, and also note that the song was first recorded for the crying game soundtrack, its status in drag acts, and the political implications of that movie)
notes on it:
the song really does have a masculine superiority vibe to it, and if a man sings it, it would (could, more likely ot) sound phallocentric, imperial almost--its a song sung by women for women (in a domestic, secret knowledge kind of way, like sirks movies were performed by women for women)
this performance of the work, the strength of Lovetts prerformance, is how pitch perfect it is, it rises when Tammy rises, it lowers when tammy rises, and hte instrumentation are pitch perfect
then it is not an act of drag as much as it is an act of great tenderness and devotion, lovett loves this woman, loves this song as an artist and performer (find qoutes for this)

Britney Spears Satisfaction
electronic opening, effuslive, and shimmering, like the sound effects for a disney movie signifying magic--its all over this, the sparkle
the first time she says i cant get not satisfaction, its talk singing, in a ballad style, and it real does sound like shes signifying sex
there has to be a button somewhere, that says "start me up"
i like it, because its so glam, so robotic, so much about a sort of preprogrammed desire
is this pradoic, commentary on, or something else, how clever is this
really quite a standard (other covers include:
girly action can me:
some lesbiantronic thing (ie mtv movie awards thing, with the
a baptists belief in the impentrability of the text
a femminizing of desire--instead of girly action meaning action done by girls for mean, girly action could mean action done by girls for their own liberation (ie the girls are doing it for themselves)
"tight my skirts should be/white my shirts should be/my own idenitiy)"
white shirts=a borgie, 3 peice purity
tight skirts=an ambiguity towards being a good girl, the end of this spec. performance, perhaps?
she ends up singing to herself, in trios, trick of studio production, but the cloning , and multiplicity of self i think is impt towards something?
its an ugly song, and propulsive in ways that the four to the floor orignal isnt, but the sheeny, harm of the song, makes it different somehow)

The democratization of media, with cheap digital cameras, memory sticks, small and portable cameras that are very durable, and a surveillance culture lead by the Internet have all lead to photos from war zones being sent by soldiers, insurgents, and others outsides of traditional photo-journalism. This leads to work that was considered too shocking, bloody, banal or amateurish is now among the central view of how we view violence committed to others.
There are a number of examples, of this kind of new publishing. For example, the creation and dissemination of the Abu Gharib photos: from the web, to mainstream magazines of every stripe, to CNN and then Congress. There are others, the forums on Now That’s Fucked Up, made for soldiers, that have images of either sex/nudity or violence/death, and the slippage between these two halves of the site—including free memberships for posting amateur nudes is as indicative of these patterns as GQ running a photo essay of military pictures taken by those serving, adding a forum on their website and then a book published by a prominent art house.
Though all of these examples are about those in war zones, it attaches itself to such varied phenomena as amateur footage broadcast on the nightly news, the popularity of non-professional and gonzo pornography, the yahoo owned photo upload site Flickr storing 100 million pictures, and the slow death of film manufactures like Minolta, Konica, Fuji and Kodak.
Tying economic reportage with cultural analysis, using military culture as a springboard, I want to deconstruct the implications of this digital ubiquity. There is something new here that invades modern/post-modern ways of looking, and this needs to be analyzed.

saw the first half of helen mirren playing Bess tonite, and i loved it, for the following reasons
1) her seductive qaulity, her wit, and her fury, made her seem more real to me, then for example the glacial coldness of cate blanchett or what ever the hell bette davis was doing (i havent seen glenda, yet)
2) the violence was really hard core, the double chop of queen marys head, the disembowleing
3) the sheer boredom of the court, the intriuge, and how limited it was--i keep being obsessed about the symbolic meanings of the minuet, the control of the body, the control of the state, etc
4) it made her hatred of catholics seemed to be an extension, a narrative, that came from natural sources, the intriuge of mary the scott, adn the armada, etc...
5) how it complicated the gender signifers of elizabeth, how she played femme when it suited, and man when it suited, and how she was something singualr and different...
6) how unpretty (ie unstylised) it was
we get the elizabeth we deserve, i think...the movie is remade every decade or so, like joan of arc or hamlet, as a way to put a mark into where our progess is eurocentrically at least...

& the lyrics--i think one of the things thats most impt in the whole queer struggle, is fucking, is fucking for all sorts of reasons, and i think one of our best weapons against homophobia, heteronormative behaviour, and heterosexism, is to realise that our culture fucks differently, and that (as a gay male) the goals of solidatary, fellowship, pleasure, tenderness and radical otherness can be centered in places where breeders fear to dwell...
what i like about rufus, is that hes not afraid of his history--of all his history, and gay messiah for me, is a fantastic text because it allows nostalgia but does not veer into the dangers of sentimentality...
he writes well.
here are the lyrics for gay messiah, the song that i linked to below:
(remember the gay jesus poem that got the english poet in trouble in the mid 70s, the last case of blasphemey that was successfully proscuted there--well this is a post queer, post colonial remix of that v. dull excercise in shock politics)
He will then be reborn
From 1970's porn
Wearing tubesocks with style
And such an innocent smile
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming
He will fall from the stars
Studio 54
And appear on the sand
Of Fire Island's shore
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming
No it will not be me
Rufus the baptist I be
No I won't be the one
Baptized in cum
What will happen instead
Someone will demand my head
And then I will kneel down
And give it to them looking down
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming

here are the lyrics for gay messiah, the song that i linked to below:
(remember the gay jesus poem that got the english poet in trouble in the mid 70s, the last case of blasphemey that was successfully proscuted there--well this is a post queer, post colonial remix of that v. dull excercise in shock politics)
He will then be reborn
From 1970's porn
Wearing tubesocks with style
And such an innocent smile
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming
He will fall from the stars
Studio 54
And appear on the sand
Of Fire Island's shore
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming
No it will not be me
Rufus the baptist I be
No I won't be the one
Baptized in cum
What will happen instead
Someone will demand my head
And then I will kneel down
And give it to them looking down
Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'Cuz the gay messiah's coming

A fantastic blog post, where a guy writes smart, short commentaries on the American Demographic maps of Religion--most of which I knew already, but well worth having an image in yr head:
here
(the quirks are the best bit, the large sections of lutherans in texas, the differences b.w the missouri and ecla synods in the midwest, the counties in the dakotas and arizona/new mexico, where they seem areligious, until you realise there is a first nation thing going on, the absence of methodists in the western half of the country, the persians of LA counties, and the general islamicism of Dearborn Michigan, etc and the unclaimedness of oregan
speaking of God--The Opus Dei's anti muslim cartoons are ony with a working knowledge of Dante and they want a little disclaimer on how the da vinci code is being mean to them, note
the hypocrisy but dont spend too much time on it
this guy paints people in custom mao posters the latest in commie chic, infused with western captialism,

John Brosio

He only paints pictures of Tornados, hes good.
Marc Quinn on Kate Moss (a working out of similar issues, wrt classicism and the grotesuqe, the opposite of his sculptures of living torso alison lechtel

Kirk Cameron witnesses to fags in WeHo and the Castro--like going into the Warsaw Ghetto to prosethise to the jews (esp. hilarous b/c he views his hamhanded attempts at tact as christian love

We can quantify the deaths caused by both communism and fascism, but we will never know how many deaths have been the result of capitalism; of nothing more noble than a rich man wanting to be even richer, and sacrificing the health and lives of millions of workers to achieve this. Don't even try to count how many people capitalism has killed, because not only will you not know where to begin, but also it will never end.

From This Weeks Us Magazine:
American IDol judge Simon Cowell, 47, dissed host Ryan Seacrest's romance with Teri Hatcher 41,on the April 4 ox Show. "Im not the one trying to look like someone out of Desperate Housewives. Lose The Beard!" the British bully scolded Seacrest, 31, who had recently grown facial hair similar to that of James Denton, 43, who playes Hatcher's long time crush on the ABC soap.
Note:
Beard is common homosexual slang for a female used to pass as a heterosexual. Simon Cowell was obliquely commenting on the rumours of Seacrests homosexuality

As for the business reasons for the change in emphasis, I doubt that there are any. I think this is all about Lacey's self-image, his compensating for his intellectual insecurity by imposing a big blustery capital J "We go out and get the stories" journalism bullshit on everything. That's based on how he comes across in the few interviews I've seen. I could be wrong. But if Westword is any indication, the man actually has no interest in getting the poop on how "the deal went down," despite what he says. Westword's office is six blocks from both the Colorado state capitol and the Denver city hall and has rarely covered either (I was going to say "never," but I really don't read the thing enough anymore to say this for sure). So there's been little attempt to probe into how power and authority actually work anywhere, though Michael Roberts has reported on Clear Channel's attempts to bully their way into dominance of the local concert scene. Basically, Westword is lifestyle, consumer guides, and human-interest stories, none of which I have any objection to in principle and none of which preclude actual ideas, if only the writers had any; the artist profiles end up as puff pieces, mostly.

thots on elvis' and big mama thortons hound dog
1) he adds the rabbit metaphor (ie you never caught a rabbit and you aint no friend of mine, which confuses me, what does the rabbit signify
2) its nastier, meaner then hortons
3) its louder, faster, it snarls, its more propulsive--its the start of elvis the pelvis
4) there is a distinction b/w pelvis and phallus, pelvic is most often signified female or queer (ie: gillian welch elvis presley blues (also useful for the resuerction motiff), anyways the pelvis qoute "shook like a chorus girl/and he shook it like a harlem queen/he shook it like a midnight rambler/like he never seen/like he never seen (notice the almost statacato shifts b/w gender, race and sexuality) also shook like a hurricane/shook like to make it rain/shook like a holy roller/baby/w. his soul at stake, his soul at stake) he shook it and it rained like silver, he shook it and it rang like gold/he shook it and it beat that steam drill.baby/bless my soul/bless my soul/whats wrong with me (conflating john henry and elvis--we dont need to talk about drills) like a chorus girl/harlem queen/midnight ramble/baby/like he never seen/never seen (the only chorus repeated)

Now, the organization of the paper is being changed. Much of the front of the book is being overhauled. Mr. Ridgeway’s column has been killed, and so has Mr. Schanberg’s Press Clips column and Toni Schlesinger’s Shelter column, which provided quirky interactions with apartment and loft dwellers. The film-review budget has been cut by two-thirds, according to a source, and some film reviews are now being contributed by freelance writers from other New Times papers. According to Voice staffers, New Times has also dismissed The Voice’s three-person fact-checking department and laid off two of the five copy editors. Last month, Mr. Lacey killed interim editor Ward Harkavy’s blog, the Bush Beat. The end-page essay has been discontinued. Voice writers now have to use the New Times stylebook, and according to a source, there are words—including “meta” and “subversive”—that are now banned from the paper.

easter vigil yesterday, he is risen, etc
three hours, and then dinner afterwards, and it was lovely.
saw jeff, who isnt happy, and val who is...
seeing val is always a revealing force, and her friend meredith of the same tendencies, a fondness for heresey, a desire to move beyond gender, a nascent femminism, an affection, slight bitterness, and a fuck you kind of energy, eating and almost cuddling with her, made me realize how much i missed her.
graham lettner, i think i like and its weird, hes touchy feely, more the hugs, rubbing shoulders and touching of great tenderness and intimacy--and it doesnt mean anything of course, its just graham, but i wonder if my cancelling and my inability to keep appointments is a combo of the ambiguity of my feelings for him (ie hes fuckable), and my fear about taking advantage of him (ie hes the SU president, he will be politically useful)...
trayce, gerads fiancee is a fantastic person, great for jacob, beautiful company, and gerards family lets me have a weekend, and i feel less and less anxious about offending...
(other things: its 7 years since my baptism, and i think that my enmeshment with mother church is complete, and my ambiguity, and gaurdedness about what i exactly believe--in the easter vigil there is a moment after everyone is confirmed that the priest asks will you defend the church and all it does, and well i cant do that, even with the wrestling, even with just the basics, that was what was so revelatory about really sitting with the apostles creed, and meditating on it, and praying on it, is that i am not even sure i can defend the basics expected of me as a xian, and some people it doesnt bother, i mean spong says no virgin birth, no resuerction, lets move on--and it bothers me...deeply. and i mean, as a poltical radical, i think that the reseruction is a bit of mcguffin--30 years of lets fuck shit up, and then dying for it, as treasounous, and then well isnt that an ignoble end, lets fix it--and that fixing i mean organic folk mythologies, how many people see elvis in kalamazoo 7-11s, etc its all too neat, too polite...and arguing about it, gives a convienet rheotorical place, and well im all about maintaining convient rhetorical places)
(rewrite: i dont believe in the reseruction, mostly because it cements my role as a heretic and because of my cynicism of the poltics of the early church. The more orthodox my company, the more radical my denials are--much of the intellectualism for that disbelieving is whole stealing from radical 20th century theologians, because their exgesis makes it easier for me to be comfortable, and comfort is not one of the goals of xian thot)
three hours, and then dinner afterwards, and it was lovely.

muriel spark just died.
i think as a writer she matched my world view the best, and her subtle, wrathful, asp on the worlds breast approach to life, and how small and slight her novels were, but how wise they were to the human condition.
she was bitter, and angry, but refused to spew, constructing traps for all our sins, traps of great skill and astonishing effectivness.
abess of crewe, her allegory on nixon, was the best book on power and responsiblity written perhaps ever, but no one paid attention to it, 100 pages, about nuns and abbies, how could it say something significant.
that she failed to win the nobel is still a mark that writers prizes are dick measuring contests, the bigger, and more epic in scoipe the book the better, and small artifacts of our own darkness, will never be rewarded.
in many ways, it reminds me of w, how little seriousness people took highsmith's ripleys novels as works of literture, as medtations on desire and how it makes pychopaths of us all...(also note the love for zadie smiths white teeth, a brilliant mess versus on beauty, perhaps the first perfect novel of the 21st)
