walt whitman was born today, and if american poetry has a father and a mother, then walt and emily are them.
as for me, i follow the cruelty and concise beauty of emily, the slant rhymes and breath breaks of her almost sonnets- and this is to my chargin and shame.
whitman, that mad man, that prophet, that marvelous barbarian who ripped apart all that was proper and good, the old lecherous goat who worked forever on his poems, who wasnt sure what he was saying but said it was power. its like trying to harness 1000 horses, trying to get eagles to fly in formation, trying to find gold in the muck of a primordial swamp.
pound wrote this, b/c pound was whitmans son with an education and some time in europe but unable to escape the messy political democratic narratives that make some american poemsy (see ezras reluctance, and look at ginsbergs balls on yr chin capitulation to the whitmanic form-a lesson there)
I make a pact with you, Walt Whitman--
I have detested you long enough.
I come to you as a grown child
Who has had a pig-headed father;
I am old enough now to make friends.
It was you that broke the new wood,
Now is a time for carving.
We have one sap and one root--
Let there be commerce between us.

We are not alone,
we live in God's world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God's presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.
the united church has gone to the desert with its laity, and they are praying together for direction, for a way to change the creed above to something that is all things for all people, from the lesbian radicals to the conserative old gaurd, who have founded something called the united concern.
church with them on sunday was moving, thoughts of god as genderless, of the world of unjustice rooted out and brought to light, as inclusionary, as one who have lifted their sails to the winds of god, who have found a way to move between old and new.
i shouldnt have gone, it felt like home, more home then catholicism recently.

Seattle,
The art musuem with a '52 Martin (she destroyed everything before '60, or almost everything) a wonderful de Kooning with Krasner pink colours, a Burra, a Pierson I have wanted to see forever, and which I will write up later, a huge collection of African masls, including a small crucifix from this century that came from Kenya- it heartened me in some ways and made me think of cultures pillaging others, a few Benin ivory minitures, a decent north-west collection, some Celadon from the Song dyansty, a large terra cotta Tang horse, a rare cyclopean figure, Cornell boxes, the Worjancwiz text piece i have seen in repro for years, a v. ugly collection of Georgian silver, a series of sculptures carved from human bone, some late Egyptian religious pieces, and many more, a v. good collection closer to Kimballs culling then the Mets pilling.
Went to Left Bank Books, which reminded me of the far left labour tradition the town was known for, Confunded Books with some local 'zines and comix, Bahaus coffee shop with a show of half pop, half folk work inspired by Johnny Cash (foot by foot paintings of stars, targets, guns, cash for 100-large potratits and combos of these themes for more), a landform camera for 25 bucks from a hip modernist store (no i didnt get it, had 15 on me, FUCKSOCKS)
Vancouver
SFU went with a few snags, maybe there in Jan. or Sept. 2004, had an Anges Martin drawing- told him pretty and gave him the year- he was impressed.
Xtra West was a fucking disaster, gay vs queer and i didnt get the job.
Fish and chicken and potato salad and half a bottle of a v. good Merlot, conversation and gossip and amusement with Pat's realtions. A bit gender normed and his uncle kept talking about pretty girlz which was awkard at best, but eh, what do you do?
Also explained Erasmus to his 13 yr old cousin so maybe i am better at this than i thot i was.
Drag show and Buds at the Dufferin, which is what the Royal was. ie. a dive where suburban sweater queens, leather bears, trannies, uni type, working colass faggots, cute dykes all congerate-the show was really traditional, and i got up on stage and dirty jokes were made on my behalf.
2 am got home, up at 11 am.
Bryan and i are shorter with each other, less patient. Vancouver is my city, the place where i escape from Edmonton.
It's weird to have it follow me. (we have had brilliant converastions on EU, cities, Canuck politics, queer theory, aesthics, Africa, Pax Americana, etc, etc. so it has been good, and i think he and i are rubbing off on each other, its just we need a break which is what the trip to the States will be about, 2 weeks away from both of them when we haven't really spent a day apart for months, it will be weird).
Shrinks appt. when we get home, hmm.
Need to write two poems
one on the car
and one on kumqauts and choco milk.
Submit writing also the week when i get home.

st adians, sermon politcal, talk of god gender neutral, prayers of the people lurched into pagan/animism, music v. good and we sang my favourite hymn. moving and discomforting, esp. in context of the christians i have dealt with in the past year. radical i am not. will blog later about the politcal implactions of the new united church policies.
glenys's friends and brother and i hung out tonite. the love and comfort cristie and glenys have for each other makes me feel deeply lonely.
her friends though, oh her friends. (i laughed so hard my belly hurt, and thot so much about so many things.)
also here is a list of fleet street personals that craig list posted, aside from a taste for sailors (in the words of bryan on someone else the ping ping could bring her to orgasm), i think that it destroys the idiocy of the dont ask, dont tell policy

which raises an interesting question-how do you make monroe grotesque, she was young and everyone in the world wanted to fuck her, and every photo from birth to autopsyt was staged, she constructed her gender as banal and artifical, and genuine at the same time-so we have some good art, some great art and some masterpeices about marylin (as well as hi/lo/no brow shlock), but never anything ugly.
i think its impossible (thot about at the sherma show)

some galleries i saw today.
one point six:
The Anniversy Party, group show from photog grads from SFU, a great C-print of Warhol looking over LA like a bemused god, and a tiny black and white of three hollywood signs, both by susan bozic
A
Equinox:
Berneadette Phan does this lovely pop flowers that over whelm the picture plane, making them imex and goergous -- one of them small enough to fit in the palm of my land, one of them 6 feet tall. Upstairs the usual grab bag: some C-prints and silver gelatins of Lethbridge and surrounding countryside, a few tiny Rushca text peices, and a realistic still life of a particle deregualtor that Bryan loved.
B-
Bu Xi:
Casey McGlyn: wall paintings and a seires of sequentel and semi sequentel canvases, some with text, some verging on abstractions, really powerful. Upstairs a nice, stark kitchen scene still life, an awful Ryman rip off, and some moody potraits
A
Atiller:
Drawing grab bag show: some Dzama (which i should have bought two years ago at 80), some paintings of suburban paradises meant to be stark and evil, a mixed media piece that Ashley could have done if he was banal, and other odds and ends.
C
Tracey Lawerence:
Aside from being the nicest to me, they had a Vicky Chistou show that took me minutes to ID media, abstract and bizzare canvases, ropes of what looks like black and white paint or worms or snakes. Also a large and ironic twist on minimalism called passage: a whole canvas filed covered with tally marks (studio as prison?). Plus a Euan Macdonald work on paper, called Expolsion, that abstracted and asesthiczed the Chuck Jones school of madcap destruction.
A+
Contempary Art Gallery:
Digtial and artifical close-ups made up of Canadiana (torn quilt, cabins) complete with fake ad copy and design by McFarland, abstractions, and behind the studio c print nudes by Jemima Sthil (boring visually-conceptually interesting-brilliant catalog)
B+
I am missing about 10 galleries (including one downtown with lots of shit, but a portfolio of eary frankenthalers that were much more delineated then she usually does) -- forget to take notes or pick up copy for most. I can reconstruct it. Bought books as well, living on dolar pizza, having a grand time.
Other things: the galleriest at Attlier thot I was one of them, took 4 rolls of film, looked thru Gastown, downtown, Marine Building.
Really happy.
I am writing a poem about kumquauts and choco milk. Wait for it.
Off to the coast tomorrow, to see the grand Glenys.

josh's blog is homophobic again, and im sick of it.
he thinks the queer content is too obv, thinks we should all shut up about fucking and not thinking of all the times he talks about how he is lonely, and all of his women troubles.
being queer is not about cock for me.
and i will not stop writing about sex and love and desire and lonliness, and the culture that surrounds all those things.
stop being so repressed.

in vancouver, bought books and music, wandered round granville ,davies, furroud(sp)
at pams.
things that happened on the trip down.
bryan photoged a man and his wife getting married in fron of mckays ice cream palour in mckays.
the groom looked like kim jeung II and was named bryan anthony-one of his witnesses was named patrick.
i had a long talk, the longest most coherent, most fair- (the only talk in fact) about the lds church. for hours.
i have not reached any conclusions.
i am typing this on granville in a place where the front half is an arcade and the back half is a internet cafe, designed for blowing up bad guys.
ART DAY TOMORROW.
the last art day(s) managed to be 48 in 72.
this time its south granville to ubc, with some misc. pick up downtown-lucky to hit a dozen.
have to email thomas.

We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world - a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. George W Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world.

david and i talked, i admitted that i wanted to, and was falling in love with him, and he soothed me-telling me of his unsureness, his discomfort, his homophobic friends and family, his flirting with everyone.
i told him how sad, how isolating how distinctly unqueer the gay community,in edmonton is.

ive been keeping a notebook, commonplace book, scrapbook or varrations of that theme since i was 14- and always found one lacking-sometime in highschool i carried two arround, one ofr qautes and one for my own writing.
i did this off and on until i found my blog, and started there- i could post pictures, write about my life, sex or politics-easily, with no risk of losing who or what i wa, the physical object eps.
i have been a utopian about the inteweb, a belief that it was intended to communicate, and i still belive that is true-the problem of the blog being both private and pubic sapce however did not occur to me recently. or the contradiciton b/w being self directed and democratic.
i had felt that people were not reading it, until evidence piled up to the contrary, and having people read it, and comment on mechanics, as well as content is both comforting (think sally field at the oscars) and deeply worrying.
i have become less candid, less personal, less likely to talk about intimate things-i am writing for an audience instead of for me. it is no longer my writers workbook but a public document. something parts of me encourage and parts of me are frightened of.
so i have three options
i can shut this down (as an aspie, this wont happen-routine and ritual become hard to unset if done for a long enough time)
i take down my comment system (this would make me a hypocrite, as i have fought to have people post comments, and as i belive deeply that blogging allows voice to those disenfranchised)
i can be deeply honest and fuck the consquences(i think i will take that one)

i bought groceries today, and thot that for every red strawberry and bagged salad and roasted chicken and liter of milk, i was respsonsible for the destruction of enviroment, immigrants who worked for slaved labour, pesticides and hormones, and i realized that i knew this and i was not doing anything about it-i was complacent.
both from here

homophobia
a while back i was asked why being gay was more impt then being straight, or why i payed more attention to it, or talked about it more- it wasnt a shut up about yr degenerate lifestyle, it was more what makes x more different then y, esp. since you dislike and dont play the x y game.
i responded that every day i go thru homophobia or am at least reminded of the hatred in the world.

Scepticism before everything. I find myself often qualifying what I say, so I try to keep the qualification but leave out the hesitation and the appearance of circling around a subject. But always being sceptical. The writers I like most are not sermonisers or pronouncers of undying truths, but those who puncture other people's pronouncements - like Swift, who is a great favourite of mine, or, Conrad, where what seems to be clear really isn't so clear because it is surrounded by doubt and uncertainty about what you've seen. I like that very much.

Love, love, love -- all the wretched cant of it, masking egotism, lust, masochism, fantasy under a mythology of sentimental postures, a welter of self-induced miseries and joys, blinding and masking the essential personalities in the frozen gestures of courtship, in the kissing and the dating and the desire, the compliments and the quarrels which vivify its barrenness.

leo strauss is the philosopher that many neo cons find apropos to follow, including many from the eastern elite-including people in the white house-now he is a writer who is complex at best and obsufacting at worse, and i have only really read his students in depth, but thanks to a national post article, among other things, i had a few thoughts.
alan bloom was criticised as being a closet case who preached temperence for the masses, but lived a life of a well monied faggot, i thot that at first this was hipocarsy , but if straussian philosophy claims that the best way to deal with a system is through an elite, then this would make sense, ie bloom was one of the elite.
the problem with western liberalism is that all people are not created equal, and the best workers on that system try to make them equal, that was what the american constituition says, strauss recontextualizes this, saying that it is impossible-and that many of the failures of this kind of thinking were not abberations but extensions. (ie Heidegger and his nazis)
growing up in Weimar Germany as an orthodox jew, he saw the destruction of a society that respected diversity and was almost at the edges of proletariat revolt- he also saw the rise of the nazis, and the academics often accepting or at least kowtowing-which lead to a question-how do we preserve this kind of democratic system when it can be destroyed so quickly by force ( a logical corelation can be made to the question i am struggling with-how do you deal with warriors and psychopaths as a pacifist-the army or armies at least contain them)
the solution strauss came with is that you cannot-his books are glosses on greek philosophy, and you are unsure what exactly where his philosophy starts and where he ends (bloom also worked on the same sources, he called plato an american democrat, which is absurd)-his choice of sources is telling- plato, Machiavelli.
what do we do with the white house who accepts this gentleman, and implicitly rejects americas jeffersonian foundations, (karl rove in last weeks new yorker big upped madison, who has similar thoughts)-and cloaks itself in language of internationalist democracy ?

also read 2/3 of jar head, all of matthew collins book on modern art (a good, quick gossispy style, easy to understand, much for novice and expert alike, a decent reading into emin-who i will blog about soon), and gary indiana's book on andrew cunanan which is tabloidy and gossipy and campy and faggy and v. close to james ellroy-trash and camp of course being ghetto fab neighbours.
i told bryan that danielle wouldnt date him, he should fucking trust me.
i am confused and upset about how i am dealing with d, and do not know how to process it.
she is different coming back from toronto, her playing has become cutting, and her digs edged with malice.
ashley and geneve are too kind, too personal to me, too obsessed with making sure that i know my own genius, so it feels like every time i piss it should be applauded.
i spent 2 hours today driving arround in Jeffs car (uni, leg, downtown, whyte, capalano, bonnie doon,124th, vic, norwood) talking about romance, god, politics, art, pacficism. decided that boys and girls are eqaully complex. I also bitched about sarah who doesnt like me and showed up to b and p, she thinks that i had harrassed her at antioch and the canoe retreat-which i cannot think of why.
im alone for the first time in three days, and it feels good.

I also bitched about sarah who doesnt like me and showed up to b and p, she thinks that i had harrassed her at antioch and the canoe retreat-which i cannot think of why.
im alone for the first time in three days, and it feels good.

matrix reloaded, 10 minutes of diverting violence, 6 minutes of cecille b demille pagan orgy, 150 minutes of dialouge trying to prove that its more the anime/chop socky/american comics- the matrix is stupid, boring, shitfest and i was shocked that people bought it, laughed at the right times, displayed awe or shock or something inbetween.
danielle, bryan, david, patrick, ashley, ian and danielles friends.
i was awful, and was pissed off i wasted 11 bucks. i didnt want to see people, and today i have an opening, plus beer and pizza.
too many large crowds, too many people, too many favours.
i need some anthony time.

reposted that as the easiest way to show aaron.
spent three hours with him today, going over his essay line by line, he writes w. a clarity that astonishes.
tuesday bible study with the proddies led me to question the whole god is love, love is not easy or simple or wonderful, and gods love, the love of eternity, astonishes, it should fill us with awe, an awe that can be wrathful, and destructive.
to be crucified beside christ, to be subsumed into the body of christ is an act of violence, not something entered lightly.
he is the paschal lamb, he takes away the sins of the world-
and in the words that come after that in mass, have mercy.
we should beg for his mercy and grace, and still we do not deserve it.
i am a wretched fallen man.
the bible study got me thinking, and praying about these questions:
am i saved
are you saved
are we born again
what evil can i commit so that saving grace can be revoked
is the saving a process
does the struggle result in the saving, is the saving or comes afterwords
does it come the minute i say the sinners prayers
i am sinful and wretched, when god said to magdalene go out and sin no more, what was he really saying, was it a commandment, could it be kept ?
what does it mean when i let jesus into my heart
can he be let out again
if the pope says heaven is the presence of gods love, is it not a physical place ?
how can we translate this to the words of catholicism
talking to glenys, she didnt have any answers either.
im scared.

who saw christs penis ?
his mother , his father, the rabbi who circumcised him,
the jeering crowd, the women who buried him, the soilders who saw him raised
maybe the disciple he loved
maybe magadelene.
II
i slip his body under my tounge
once a week
does that body have a penis, testicles ?
arms, hands, eyes ?
the foreskin is found as relic
but the body renews,
and so we have Him all.
III
every time he enters my tounge
it is through the hands of a eunuch,
to whom christ promised the kingdom heaven
IV
As notice at adoration,
a red candle is lit
like a ships signal.
like that penis becoming
the light to the world
V
Every moan of Theresa refutes
every word of Jerome.
VI
To take the robe off,
as he hangs in torture
from every church in christendom.
means praying to christ's penis
is this heresey ?
bryan and i were chattering when he worked on his car, the one we are taking down to seattle and he asked who the patron saint of mechanics was so i went to the patron saint page, and looked it up and it turned out to be catherine of alexandria, the woman who was killed on a wheel, and then splintered it so it could kill legions of roman soilders so i went out and told bryan this and he started muttering prayers about getting the bolts out, and all this other mechanics stuff.

i am writing something about andy warhol right now, and how he is viewed as
pill popper, faggot, shallow and bored and pretty ugly. he continued to work
through out his life on themes of god, casting marylin as mary, keeping
diary and screen tests as confession, obessing about crosses, saints, going
to mass, all of it.
people didnt see it until very late or until after he died because they
didnt want to.
he also had aspergers.

PinkMoosePearl: (its about the anihlation of self, the obsession with voyeurism turning into the ultimate refusual of person, its about it being theory light, its about how hot lou reed looks and how fuckable and tender candy darling is)
PinkMoosePearl: good
jazzyjordan42: sounds like it writes itself ;-)
PinkMoosePearl: sort of
PinkMoosePearl: its practice shit
jazzyjordan42: so voyeurism is post-modernist then?
PinkMoosePearl: no
PinkMoosePearl: its an affect of technology that eases it
PinkMoosePearl: but its a theme of art world wide for time immeorial (sp)
jazzyjordan42: gotcha. perhaps it has been adopted by as a postmodernist act for its association with technology, commodification/objectification, and annihilation of self
PinkMoosePearl: all of that is pomo
jazzyjordan42: but probably not
PinkMoosePearl: but i think in many ways warhol was old school
PinkMoosePearl: and i dont mean dada
PinkMoosePearl: i mean catholic,
PinkMoosePearl: and confession has a deeply voyueristic element, and also is about commodification/objectification, and annihilation of self
PinkMoosePearl: so the screen tests, for me are confessional booths, are highly ritualized and deeply personal recasting
PinkMoosePearl: of holy rites he knew since childhood

Realize that I am doing this so that I am not a hypocrite.
Understand that I am doing this because I believe it is necessary.
Notice the difference between Canada's army and foreign policy and
America's or Britain's, which you often confuse them for.
Believe that I know what I'm doing.
Accept that morality is so personal, so private, that it is beyond
real criticism; ethics may be analyzed, morals cannot.
Please don't run away from me just because I don't make the same
choices you do. It's not fair in the least.

realize that violence is not fun
realize that which is evil is to be destroyed
realize that i view the nation state as destructive
realize that if i suppourt you i will be a hypocrite
realize that i am ashamed of my violence, that i use violence as a tactic
and this sickens me
realize that war kills, that guns kill, that shooting is not fun.
realize that it is not a rite of passage.
realize that fucking for peace is like raping for virginity
realize that you will be fucking with 1000s of yrs of history, and people
will view you as a colonial.

matrydom makes saints, and makes public more aware of what is happening, and it is good to know that a man loves his god and his people enough to die.
i am sad today, and hope that people read this and care.

Since Neil Tennant is there, let's remember something he said in an interview once. It's important to hate pop music to make great pop music.
It's important that people be bored by art. That's what keeps art interesting.
You go to a thrift store. 90% of the clothes there are horrible and manky. But if you persist, you just know that there's one garment somewhere which is going to change your life.
You need to be bored with sex (those long stretches of boredom between orgasm and the next tingle) to get interested in sex again. Oh wow, this!
Art is junk-treasure you can ransack for ideas-pleasure. But pleasure can never be guaranteed.
Last night I went to five gallery openings in Kreuzberg and saw only boring work. Then I came home, went online, and read an essay about 80s conceptual pop band Sudden Sway and got extremely excited, immediately planning to make their career into a West End musical.
Who knows from which direction the tiger of excitement will pounce out at your boredom, tearing it to pieces? All we can say is that it probably will happen.

i was helping on a hutterite farm when i was 14, for a couple of weeks, good neighbour thing (this was when i was away at school)
and after the evenings work this young fellow pulled me aside and said, i need to show you something, so he pulled me to his room,: and started taking his braces down and his shirt off i was like dude, yr attractive and all but not now and he had a rolling stones t shirt on he then proceeded to show me his radio, and headphones
twp62yo: I once delivered pizza to a house full of Hutterite guys (all between 18 an 24 or so) who had left whatever colony, sitting around watching porn together. There were about 10 of them in a very small room. IT WAS NOT HOTT.

for it: the last novel i liked by hers was handmaids, i like it when sh is bitter and angry, i agree with her postions on sci and tech, the aspergers angle touches me on a personal level, it has gotten good press.
agaisnt it: i usually do not like her prose, it seems over the top,she has expressed contempt for sf before, i am not sure i will like the charachters, when has she not gotten good press.

Walton Ford, with his illustrative style, and sense of colour would seem to be from la, working out of long island his work is informed by both ethnographic and zoological practice from the 18th and 19th Century. He then takes those, and tweaks them with elements of modern power politics.
Think of english explorer Richard Burton, who is name checked in the painting Dirty Dick Burton's Aide de Camp- who played gr8 colonial tourist, doing studies of mens cock size based on race, faking his way into mecca, translating both the koran and the arabian nights- that strange mix between the holy and the blasphemous is a ready metonymy for larger post colonial excercises both at home and abroad.
The monkey in art history terms is used to symbolize whoring, infiedilty, and in jungian symbolism our baser animal selves-to have a monkey portayed in a zoological style, and titled venucalarly, is to suggest that all of europes adventures were nothing more then slutting and beshitting through history.
aide de campe- as in camp.

a dubious if not downright slutty reputation.
atwood on sf, new york times by the way of ew
ok atwoods a snob, but she is talking of reputation, an aspect of interior vs exterior which is one of her major themes. the reviews (including a v. good one by oliver morton at ew) says this is a messy, confused and intellectual take on the shiny apocolypse, as opposed to a handmaids tale, which was high lit, was never sf, was always denied by the authour as sf.
i for one am looking forwards to this new atwood, one who deigns to fall into the muck.
i love atwood but she always seemed to be ivory tower.
also, playoff beards are fucking hot.

three am tenderness with bryan- i dont know what i want to do with myself, why am i writing little poems, and art crit when the world is starving. i am wotking for other people, my review work is not directed enough.
im smart and i think academically, so why is the academia so hard for me.
maybe im not smart, i dont think im smart, but people keep telling me i am.
aaron wants to see my poems, and thats nonesense, i cant see myself showing them, but i will, because i suck up praise like a vampire.
what is good about my poetry i think, is how i mix the high and low, like the poem below-which is the first ive written about kevin, and im not sure is good, or i think has problems, when i show bryan my poems he has all these pretty words of praise.
we took photos in the dark yesterday, night photogging is a pain in the arse, and much more difficult, and i am not v. good at it-it took me a year and a half to be passable on the composition with the point and shoot, and its going to take some time to work out light and all that techincal shit on an slr.
at dennys last night with bryan and pat and danielle, i realized that i wasnt really a fanboy-or my fanboydom was clowes and crumb, argento and lewis-ie once again im a white tower snob, realizing that in dennys is a humbling experience.
today i said my morning prayers, and couldnt find myself past the line concerning trespasses, the attack shattered who i am as a christian, made me come into full awareness that a life like christ ends in crucifixion. im meeting fthr stephen-i had a panic attack with the bible study, calling and then cancelling, and then calling back and rescheduling, i went and felt uncomfortoble until i was there long enough-i am finding that i disagree with much of all of their theology, but like them as people.
matthew 3:8 was brought up again, read it.
i realized today that everyone had direction, and i was lost.
i realized everyone thot they would die when they were old, i cant imagine living after 50.

It's no go the Yogi-man, it's no go Blavatsky,
All we want is a bank balance and a bit of skirt in a taxi.
macniece
son of america,
who came north
to spread love of god and self
california blonde
all that compact loveliness
sun tanned earnestness
that fun loving
yet highly fuckable
seriousness
you loved me
or played
beholden boyscout
we were found out
and you begged
forgiveness
I shrugged shoulder
and turned back
what came from there ?
someone got two kids
a wife, a split ranch
in clovis, ca

got queer theory

I was angry,
thought I got the

but now I forgive you
and realize how little
you taught me about god

I often wish I had the strength to commit suicide, but on the other hand, if I had, I probably wouldn't feel the need. God! Can't you let us win once in a while?

bhangra, two step, dancehall-love it all, all this shit influenced by hip hop, but not hip hop
i dont like hip hop, can deal with ashanti but not j rule-wonder why, is it my love of texture, maybe i should try to listen to hip hop w/o hearing the words.
thats like hearing robert johnson singing hell hound on my tail and not realizing the immensity of the actual pain. he called it devoicing black people.
am i a tourist when it comes to bhangra, can i deal with two step cause im an anglophile ?
how do i get into hip hops words ?
(hip hop is praised as a verbal genre, another similarty to country, what happens when i ignore the words ?)

HOWARD DEAN'S STATEMENT IN COLUMBIA, SC
In the closing remarks of tonight's debate in Columbia, South Carolina, Howard Dean said:
We can't win this election if we worry so much about electability that the American people can't tell the difference between us and the Republicans.
The great unspoken political lie, which comes from stages like this, is elect me and I’ll solve all of your problems.
The great unspoken truth is that the future of this country rests in your hands, not mine.
You have the power to rise up and take this country back. You have the power to give this party the backbone to challenge this President, and all of the harm he has done to our country. You have the power to create jobs, balance the budget, and bring us our dream, which Harry Truman put in our platform in 1948 – health care for every American.
The reason people don’t vote in this country is that we don’t give them a reason to vote. This campaign is about giving all of you a reason to vote.
Abraham Lincoln said, "A government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth." President Bush has forgotten the ordinary people of this country.
It’s time to take our party back and it’s time to take our country back.

with patrick
we are closed set
and from outside
the ambiguity seems hostile.
here is love,
coming with out desire.
we have tenderness,
talk that roars as fast as fire,
and things more tangible
bread, milk, oatmeal
gin, film, television
and denny's ice cream
at 3 am, we still
converse, and that conversation clings.

on jean richie's ballads
a burnished, young sounding, ky accented, woman sings the hits of 18th century applachia, with no instrumenation what so ever.
themes:
woman leaves comfort for romance, gets neither (gypsy laddie-the third or version i have heard of this, the only one with the miserable coda)
man betrays his lover (false sir john)
man on the gallows begs everyone he knows to give him ransom (hangman-which is different then the version i learnt round the campire, and which is sung a tad too jaunty for me)
a sailor "the old salt sea", and is imprisoned for life by the turks, later is tied to giant tree and dies (lord bateman-maybe christian)
a woman falls in love with a sailor, turns out to be a demon, they all go to hell (lord thomas and fair offender)
a woman falls in love with a lord, but he is married to another, she follows, and is killed by the bride when the groom chooses her instead. (lord thomas and fair ellender-also when a women in these ballads dresses in white and/or green-they are fucked)
a ballad concerning a shipwreck (the merry golden tree)
a nonesense ballad, contains the lines "he found the bones of 1000 men" (old bangum)
a man, on his death bed, begs for his lover, and she turns out to be a cruel bitch (barbara allen, one of my favourite childe ballades, and the way this women moans the vowels is haunting)
a man loves a women so much, he takes her as a ghost (the unquiet grave, morbid and almost necrophillic)
a woman leaves when her lover marries someone else, she comes back and haunts the married couple(margaret and sir william, with dobro and guitar)
an eldery man courts a young women with gold and fur, (there lived an old lord, bling bling baby)
The Cherry Carol, which i will write about at length on nyplm tomorrow
a man tries to tell his lover that the blood on his sleeve is a mare, hound, and then found to be his brother in law (edward, also a new varration)
a man is too stupid to realize the bitch he loves has killed him. (randall, though not her legendary 20 minute version)
and the almost too long alduters tale little musgrave which i like because it is told almost all in a womens tone.

some thoughts
it was one of the prettist movies i have seen in a long time.
the queer content was wise and funny.
(side thought, the sex seemed human, confusing, dangerous, tender, all of what sex really is)
the concepts of idenity as it relates to private and personal spheres intrigued me.
the acting was subtle when it needed to be subtle and ott when it needed to be ott.
the death of jean grey was sad.
nightcrawlers catholicism was one of the most honest depictions of faith in everyday life, as comfort and as balm, as i have seen-when most religous types are mocked or condemened this was really cool.
magneto as helper, magneto as harm.
what did everyone else think.

so, the american drug policy is dangerous, unproductive, and really about issues of class, race and social control. It also works well as an excuse to fuck with other nations right of self determation. Canada wants to decriminalize weed-a wise manourve- this was the american response.

The way that the Edmonton Journal has dealt with the twenty something demographic is invent a new section - "ed", short for Edmonton. The writers are young, as is the editor, a Sean Ohler.
I have written for them, as have many of the Gateway crew, and his mandate seems to be new writers and new ideas. Many times this works, but often it seems patronizing, with the slightly risque top ten lists, a new comic by Mike Winters, who has been known for dick jokes up to that point, a profile of a twenty something, a well photographed design what to buy section etc.
He has done some innovative things though, it is called a magazine, and is a broadsheet section inside the main papers similar to "the alternative weeklies", he had a graphic novel about crime in the last two issues, when I wrote a first person peice, i think i was the first man to use the word shit in that daily and he let me compare my laughter to copulating donkeys.
The Sun just intergrates seasoned hipsters into their entertainment copy, like Steve Tilley and Fish Griwkowsky, but they may not be twenty somethings anymore, and have the stench of people who stayed too long at the party.
In many ways, it feels like youth are being patronized or ghettoized, the news and hard issues that are vital are swept under the carpet or allowed to be taken up by inserts and campus paper.
I read the Journal daily, and have been since i was old enough to read. I do it now out of force of habit, not because it is telling me anything new or exciting. It bores me, most of the content designed for a demographic above me.
Maybe it cannot keep up with the cynicism, if we assume that the news refuses to tell the truth because of money, and many of us 20somethings do, what can a paper do to convince us otherwise.
As a writer, they are already cutting staff, amalgmatiing editorials under a common banner, letting idiot boomers write reviews and ignore any of the events we go to. The only youthful entertainment writers, Sandra Sperounes, is stuck reviewing Avril instead of hall shows and the equivlant at the Sun (whose name i forget), gets to review punk 7 inches, but doesnt get to see anything live.
Thats the other thing, this is all entertainment stuff, this is all breads and circuses, why arent we getting news or opinon or anything but the fluff. I feel disenfranchised.
