Panel Proposal: *Choice Materialities*
Lucas Cassidy Crawford, University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta)
-‘Say my Name, Butch!’ A Literary Ethics of Transgender Name Change
Anthony Easton, independent scholar and artist (Toronto, Ontario)
-On the Lacunae of Choice
Jennifer E. Crawford, York University (Toronto, Ontario)
-Getting it on/off: Desire and the Fact of Orgasm
*Panel Motivation*
While eugenics discourse has all too many (industry- and normativity-inspired) reasons to prove that sexuality and gender are not a matter of choice, the question of choosing one’s styles of fucking, one’s gender, one’s politics and one’s family has been central to the various developments and de(con)structions of queer communities. On the other hand, many queers are eager to prove that nothing about their lifestyle is a choice, while many religious conservatives base their prejudice on the belief that ‘homosexuality’ is indeed a choice. In all cases, choice is taken for granted as the pivotal point. While different political aims underlie the many orientations to choice we see played out in popular, scientific, and academic discourse today, there is something else at stake in any argument about choice: the fraught role of matter. In many popular accounts of gender and sexuality, materiality – one’s body, in particular – either generates or reflects, motivates or inhibits, and ultimately, chooses or deals with a choice. To the end of moving beyond these binaries, the three papers on this panel struggle to problematize both the ostensible liberation of choice and also the ostensible captivity of being unable to choose. The indeterminate, stubborn, and inchoate matter of embodiment mars both of those easy projects and demands a much more nuanced account of how our queerness takes shape and how we shape it.
While Anthony Easton’s paper analyzes popular discourses of choice and asks what is at stake in perpetuating this trope, Lucas Cassidy Crawford’s paper analyzes a particular transgender choice – that of choosing a new name – and argues that this seemingly linguistic technology of gender is actually thoroughly material. Easton’s paper provides an overview of what seem to be ‘the’ choices facing queer and trans communities in this very particular age from his very particular perspective as an artist and activist, which provides a valuable frame to the incisive and detailed close readings of the other papers. Jennifer E. Crawford’s paper takes as its subject something that seems like a ‘no-brainer’ kind of choice: that everyone would surely choose the orgasm as the material culmination of sex. By imbuing the act of not coming with agency, this paper sets out a new ethics of sexual practice that questions the valorization of sex that has a decisive ending or obvious trajectory. Together, the papers point the way towards strategies and ethics for navigating not only the very difficult choices we make as queer people but also the dangerous and ubiquitous public discourses of ‘choice’ that seem impossible to avoid in our era.

the strangers, the horror film with liv tyler and scott speedman, is a weird ammaglation of manson and haake's(Sp) funny games. and it begins as a domestic melodrama, no violence for the first 45 minutes. (boring in places, really blank, but with a fantastic ending, that i won't reveal, and gemma ward is one of the muderers!!)

6 Women and 2 Men Who Would Sing Come on Over Better then Jessica Simpson
Women:
1) Miranda Lambert (the song does have a sort of out of control prarie fire quality, and Ms Lambert can deliver)
2) Trisha Yearwood (could work as a corrective/paratext to the slightly cryptic Garth Brooks single More then a Memory)
3) Faith Hill (because she does songs alike this in a way where southern politness infects public lust, and Simpson is playing up her southern charms here)
4) Tanya Tucker (because she needs a comeback single
5) Martina McBride (because it would have worked better as a torch song, and her last album attempted and failed at it)
6) Britney Spears (though her last album was genius, profoundly unhinged, the southern girl working thru the genres as an attempt towards redemption, fits Britney's narratives much then Simpson's)
Men:
1) Brad Paisley (because it doesn't have any of the creepy misogyny that is work is so infamous for)
2) Josh Turner (because he could make the song much sexier, much more desperate)
as it is, the song is weirdly sexless, and desperate.

Queer and Catholic examines the culture of how being raised catholic informs and influences, positively or negatively, our queerness and how our queerness affects our Catholicism, our vestigial catholic nature or even our flight from and continued struggle with the ‘the Church of Rome.’ Whether we embrace or reject our Catholic upbringings, they affect and shape who we are and bump up against our queer identities. Examining the culture of Catholicism, rather than the dogma or letter of it, these essays and short stories do not seek to address whether or not queers and the Catholic Church can reconcile or how and why the church should change, but instead explore the impact that growing up Catholic and queer has on us as individuals, writers, and political agents. Join editor Amie M. Evans, and contributors: Helen Boyd, Joseph de Marco, Anthony Easton, Stephen Greco, Vince Sgambati; Charlie Vazquez; and Emanuel Xavier as they read from their contributions to the anthology. Friday, September 5, 8PM at BlueStockings, 172 Allen St; New York, NY 10002 (212) 777-6028

Your sense of privacy is very different from Robert Rauschenberg's isn't it?" I asked, naming the artist with whom he was the most intimate when they were both young...according to Leo Castelli "Whebn they are with each other , they are amiable but there 's not much left for them to share. ORiginally Rauschenberg was the older man, more expereinced. And of course Bob is so ebulien. Whereas for JAsper , every stroke he paints is an effort" I remember once saying to Johns that he and Rauscnehnberg struck me as so different, Johns exclaimed "Thank God"!...From Arts and LEtters, a collection of Edmund White's essays on artists and writers, 270

wandering around a lot, getting used to the new city, miles and miles of walking, rachel and i today, thru the danforth, across suicide bridge, down the valley near the castle frank subway station, across the don valley park way, up thru the cemetary at st james, then up thru cabbage town.
me alone in the last few days, the south end of dundas, lake view, gerard street, danforth, queen, lots and lots of queen west.
me with d, little india.
done some work, got a show with rachel and laura at toronto free next june, a show at come as you are in sept., maybe some work shown at a university of toronto space for contact next year, but mostly it has been reenmeshing myself, calming down and slowing down and just being.
i am relaxed mostly, and oddly happy--sometimes i feel like i should be working more, but i have been working for years w/o much of a break, and so little half days are a good way of rencultrating myself.
