1) What was the last movie you saw, either in a theater or on DVD, and why?
Wicker Man, the remake, b/c I wanted to see if it was as awful as i thought it was--cryptic, with mild horror, and mostly dull, the orginal seemed to be a v. time and place thing, which is a shame, b/c the central message seems to be one of lebutes main wrestling venues, not quite gender, but what happens when men and women start realising they hate each other, what happens with power when the sexes have been found out (though the scene thru the woods, on the first chase, at night, looks oddly like a kinkade w. the lights turned out, which i find really funny) (and molly parker is really sexy in it)
2) Name the cinematographer whose work you most look forward to seeing, and an example of one of his/her finest achievements.
Tobias A. Schliessler, Friday Night Lights and Dream Girls, w. FNL, the scenes in between, of small towns, and the usual robert frank aesthetics, are made grainy, without that grainess being used to symbolize much at all, those scenes were so well shot, and slowed down the movie, into a gorgeous, syrupy utopia...i havent seen dream girls, but i can imagine he can do equal things there.
3) Joe Don Baker or Bo Svenson?
Bo Svenson, aside from doing a fantastic, grizzled frontier work on kill bill, he has this great white trash aesthetic, including television work.

im stuck on this one, but the first that came to mind was steel magnolias, because it seemed genuine and honest about life in the rural south, among women, and the pace, and the refusal to be anything but entertainment, seemed not to have any agenda but documenting that, it seems then, not to be current, but looking backwards (another answer--the best little whorehouse in texas, where easy and ready sex is cast as good clean fun, and that progress is attached to morality, is a sort of backwards lesson, but i like how sex for money is what is viewed w. rose coloured glasses, and intereference with that is viewed as problematic progress)

On December 20th, I ordered 19 8x12s and 10 4x6s, making prints from digital problems via uploading on Wal Mart's website. There were some significant problems.
1) Two of the 4x6s were printed in such a way that it was not representational of the original image. Elements were absent, or uncentered, i have no idea how this happened.
2) The orders of 8x12s, one of 13 prints and one of 6 prints, were not printed.
3) When I called the Ft Saskatchewan photo center, the clerk I talked to had no idea what I was talking about, and suggested that I resend the images. I am nervous about doing this, because

b) I still have 19 in the ether.

Ackerman is mostly known for his nudes, or his partial nudes, but his two night sieres are really pretty. There is a little too much of the decorative here, adn a bit too much of the 19th century, though digital, it could v. much be a daugertype or other chemical methods. The purity of the image, with the bridge providing a mirrored circle, infinte and lovely, preurban, in the center of urbanirty, and the lighting, and the crisp detailing, almost too romantic, with its aching for a lost world. all of this is cliche, adn i think what i am moved by is that willingness to be romantic, 19th century, parisian, formal, with out making any big deal about it. Unit E at a prison outside Newton Illinois, provided single bedrooms, porcelian toilets, doorknobs, and comfort beyond most american prisoners it was only available to christians. a couple of interestnig things about this, most peoplein the prision thought that this was so problematic, and refused to particpiate, and it wasnt good behaviour or religious virtue, muslims. though common, were excluded. a lawsuit just stopped them.

Nashville Scene Poll
TOP TEN COUNTRY ALBUMS OF 2006:
1. This Old Road—Kris Kristofferson
In the Hebrew tradition, prophecy was not something either desired or sought after. I think of Kris Kristofferson, exhausted and hopeful, desperate that someone with more energy would take over, but no one ever comes. His is the closest that we have come to a Jeremiah.
2. Out of the Ashes—Jessi Colter
The interesting thing about the outlaw movement, was the inclusion of married couples or couples in relationships. Jessi Colter was on the first album that defined the genre, and has been singing since then. This could have been a broken mourning record, but she seems settled and happy, despite Waylon's loss. A wise piece of work, filled with hard fought sentiment. When she sings The Eye is On the Sparrow, for those 3 minutes, I am convinced that Jesus loves me.
3. Foothill Dandy—Cindy Bostle
I always wonder why the huge scene in Australia, folk, roots or country, hasn't really broken in America. Another example of an amazing singer and player, overlooked for the wrong geographical reasons.
4. These Animal Years—Josh Ritter
Calling him the next Dylan would be a horrible cliché, and anyways Frank Kogan has claimed that role for Ashley Simpson, but there is something cryptic, and real, and fractal here, that strikes me as close to Freewheeling as we are going to get. (Because every generation gets the Dylan he deserves) That said, Ritter can genuinely sing, and has a deep talent for couplets that tell the truth in plain speech, but is also capable of that allusion rich, difficult traps we have come to expect. Comforting, and calming, though it shouldn't be, considering how eschatological it is in places, or how much it is about losing his girlfriend in an unjust war, or any other examples of transcendent misery.
5. Someone Wrote Love-- George Canyon
He has a great voice, recorded this years great drinking song, can use the word Hoss properly, and loves his kid as much as his daddy—all of which would place him high on the list. But over and over, he mentions writing, and cleaning writing, the permanent and temporariness of writing, from carving on trees to paiting on water towers (in the albums great metaphor, he talks about how an old boyfriend wrote his lovers name on the water tower, and now he is going to have to clean it off, with turpentine and elbow grease.) I think that it might be too deep for Canyon, but the continued popping up, of that belief in the written word, and the recognizing of his fragility, made it for me.
6. Josh Turner—Your Man
Because his voice makes me melt
7. Black Cadillac—Roseanne Cash
Johnny Cash wasn't beneath any rhetorical trick, he could find, to make the story better, he was filled with cheap theatrics, and an alt-country queen talking about her dead daddy for an hour, shows that Roseanne has learned every one of her fathers lessons except humor and humility. So the album is leaden but unavoidable in its power.
8. Tom Waits—Orphans, etc.
Proving that the Silver Jew's David Berman was right, when he sang "all my favorite singers couldn't sing", this 3 CD set is an epic mess that proves Waites is a true American original, and one of the best interpretive singers in it's history. (It's sort of his Judy at Carnegie moment, when he collapses into cliché, and a performance so coded, it might as well be Kabuki, and it still works out rather amazingly, because its not the songs or the singer but the schtick that ever lasts. )

With all of this trendy obsession with Pirates being cute and ironic (see Pirates of the Caribbean, Pop Up Pete, Talk Like A Pirate Day, and Dave Eggers, for starter) one forgets important things about them—like how they raped, murdered, tortured and rogered there way through the centuries. This collection reminds us that folk songs come from somewhere, and pays attention to the context that is lost from cheapness.
10. We Shall Over Come: The Seeger Sessons- Bruce Springsteen
Because he managed to avoid this being a circle jerk of lefty banality, and actually rocked through a couple of numbers.

Whiny and entitled bitches, who are trying to make a career at art, after a career at commerce didn't fulfill them enough, all of this can be forgiven listening here. There is an intensity, an overwrought, gothic gravitas, that makes the tempest seem like a tsunami.
2. Running Block—Toby Keith
It's cheap but it isn't as nasty as Toby thinks it is. But it continues Toby's continued belief in pleasure. For the first time, this pleasure might be tempered by a bit of responsibility, forgoing a pump and dump for a solid night of bros before hos love making . Also, how he sings the line "co-eds swimming nekkid" is the sexiest white trash phrasing in recent memory.
3. Stealing Kisses—Faith Hill
The single was this year; the album was last year. My biggest surprise was that I found myself loving Faith. She has become accustomed to her instrument, the warmth, and full-throated commitment to melancholy and desire had an intensity that reminds me of Dionne Warwick.
4. Like Red on a Rose--Alan Jackson
Alan finally gives up any attempts at commercialism, and signs onto old school countrypolitian, like Lee Ann Womack last year. It's not nearly as good, and the album is filled with patronizing clichés, but the man believes his pure and unadulterated schmaltz. There is something be said for a singer who is willing to genuinely engage lines like "I love you like all little children love pennies" I want it to be sung as a torch song, by someone who has known other pleasures besides hetero-pairbonding, but one takes what one is given.
5. Like We Never Loved At All—Tim McGraw/Faith Hill
That aforementioned torch song, and one of the best, made more interesting by noticing that though they seem relatively happy, all the best duets by them feature breaking up.
6. Settle for A Slow Down—Dierks Bentley
7. Hold My Beer (While I Kiss Your Girlfriend)—Aaron Pritchett
Famous in Canada, this linebacker of a man has more urban slickness then most hicks north of the 49th. A one-line joke song that is genuinely funny.
8. On The Shores of Old Mexico--George Strait
Elegiac, and gorgeous, here because it is so confident that memory and history can be as much of an aphrodisiac as power and youth.
9. Josh Turner: Your Man
Turner is the best singer this year, hands down, and this song makes me hard just thinking about it.
10. Amarillo Morning--Jason Aldean
There is something to be said for rural verisimilitude, and I think Aldean has it, more then almost any other singer working today, and I think that the feelings are legitimate. I have had conversations with family, and friends still on farms, and they seem broken, in ways that my mother never remembers. The hope that is in play here is a lot more effective then the butch posturing of someone like Montgomery Gentry. Because sometimes Daddy has to sell the farm, or the bank takes the farm away from daddy. That said, it creates an overly simplified dialectic, refusing responsibility or political responsibility for a complicated situation.
TOP FIVE COUNTRY REISSUES OF 2006:
1 Bob Willis and The Texas Playboys
A well-constructed, decently curated best-of, which has all of the seminal texts needed, in a cheap and available package.
2. Reflected: Greatest Hits Vol. 2 Tim McGraw
It is rare, that a greatest hits package seems necessary, and even rarer that the new song is as strong as the albums that preceded it. The warmth, emotional complexity, the raw encounters…Tim McGraw, I think is underrated in his capability for negotiating the contemporary thicket of suburban ennui. And he gets better and better, nothing embarrassing, nothing out of place here.
3. Country Heat 2007
I think that these work so well as time capsules, immediate, and shiny, they will tell us what we listened to in 1997, or 2000. There is something then, immediate, but forward looking, that the best of pop should achieve, and the Heat collections do it much better than the Now collections.
4. Hillbilly Hot Rod and Automobile Songs—V/A
From the amazing British company Jasmine Records, who sends me a catalog twice a year, chock full of cheap CDs of jazz, nostalgic and country CDs, no sexy packaging, no long essays, just the music. The comps are really good, because they don't go for either the obvious or the obscure. This collection has great Hot Rod songs, but extends and embraces the rest of mid-century automobile culture from there. 24 songs you never thought yo needed, till you had the album in your hand. Great Fun.
5.Johnny Bond-I Like My Chicken Frying Size
This boogie-woogie master provides the missing link between rockabilly and just plain rock, plus the best title of the year. Produced by the same company as Hillbilly Hot Rod.

49 Johnathon Lethem--5 short stories, forget the title, i think that Lethem is one of those writers that talks about the ennui of middle class boyhood, extended past natural limits, about men who are moorless, after femminism and queer rights left...his use of magic realism, and pop culture bricolouge, to the very core of his work, makes the peices more problematic, like springbound traps, but nessc. i loved two stories in this collection, the first, which uses a childhood game of murder adn then i never, to talk about the id, in a really coded way, and super goat man, the others didnt work quite as well, but an excellent volume

fiction ahoy
six: a volume of mr paul, i bought this, but not sure why, the art is fantastic, with some really sweet and gentle line work, and the story moves along alright, and aside tom a few examples of casual racism, its inoffensive, but mostly its kind of dull
five where the truth lies--rupert holmes, a fantastic example of his hollywood trash, i took it out after watching the egoyan movie, egyons adpatation was much more clever, he made it closer, more paronid, and v. much about the aesthetic implicaitons of modernism, with the scenes in deco miami hotel rooms and LA glass block mansions working together to push a story of murder/desire (an essay is to be written about his use of third spaces, egoyans, in this film the hotel, tv studio, casino, parks, offices, as compared with the private spaces, homes and such, that seem more open. anyways, the novel was pretty close to the film for the first third, then holmes became less economic and more conventional, and moved into a standard ellroy lite dective story...i dont want to give away any more of the plot, but the main differencee b/w the film and the book was two set peices in disneyland, which made the plasticity appealing...
four the push broom man, one of the better drawn, better constructed, books i have read, brilliant paced, but almost all of the stories feature various desperate men raping and murdering their lovers, who tend to be geishas, or whores or something in b/w...the vile misogyny should be noted.

in calgary, spent the last few days (friday, sat. sun) actually relaxing, i did no work, and only sent half a dozen emails.
notes:
bus ride down, saw two people get drunk on cheap, hidden beer.
walking out, saw a kid get manhandled, cuffed, for narcotics, while a buddhist monk waited on the sidelines
found castles brilliant anthology of lesbianism for 35 bux, at mcnally robinson, then went over and spent way to much for dinner (saltlik: aspargus in guyere, blue cheese crumbled small porterhouse, baked alaska (!), a manhattan (much discussion at the bar over this, but they got it right, first time the mixer mixed it, but brilliant and the two cheeries in the bottom of the glass might be my favourite pleasue), a strong glass of fairly undry chilean cabernat, and a glass of tawny sherry (20 years old) but the best was the alaska, melty, icey, warm, gooey, the textures, and the narrative of the textures (as things melted, or thawed, etc they changed) the center was pistachio ice cream, and the base was a really thick, choclate torte
staying with thomas, huge house on the very edge of calgary, basically the suburbs, but realtivley nice.

went today to toms church, alliance on the end of town, blank, communion was welshes and a ritz cracker, and the sermon qouted as much narnia as jesus (it had a powerpoint side show, too---to jesus thru powerpoint), then we went to lunch and the zoo, mcdicks for lunch, which wasnt my choice, though the zoo was completely revived , with massive new buildings, and more intergrative experinces for the animals, saw many, my favourite being the african land snails the size of ones fist...though i note with much sadness and mourning, the lack of llamas and wombats. though they had wallabies. we must vanquish cedrics forces.
im tired, exhausted really, but happy.

walking out, saw a kid get manhandled, cuffed, for narcotics, while a buddhist monk waited on the sidelines
found castles brilliant anthology of lesbianism for 35 bux, at mcnally robinson, then went over and spent way to much for dinner (saltlik: aspargus in guyere, blue cheese crumbled small porterhouse, baked alaska (!), a manhattan (much discussion at the bar over this, but they got it right, first time the mixer mixed it, but brilliant and the two cheeries in the bottom of the glass might be my favourite pleasue), a strong glass of fairly undry chilean cabernat, and a glass of tawny sherry (20 years old) but the best was the alaska, melty, icey, warm, gooey, the textures, and the narrative of the textures (as things melted, or thawed, etc they changed) the center was pistachio ice cream, and the base was a really thick, choclate torte

this review of the tiptree bio by farah mendelhson postulates that triptree might have been transsexual, but uses the word transgendered and spends a fair amount of time talking about bodies and phyiscal acts related to those bodies...i think that it is fair to call mr tiptree transgendered b/c of how he both claimed a male nomenclature, and constructed a life of comfort in traditioanlly masculine fields, including SF and the CIA. got the seqaul to waugh's gay graphix b4 stonewall today, and it had more happyface, among other work, and though i am glad to have the extra drawings, esp for 10 bucks, and the writing is the personal, catty, queer, and academic melange that i have come to expect, the work is clearly second rate, as for the happyface drawings, they had a definite working drawing for larger compoistion feeling, and the briliance of staging, and graphic narrative building was absent. the other work was charming in its incompetence, though i might fix this opinon when i spend more time with the book.

Ruscha Package:
In 1977 Ed Ruscha made a drawing that consisted solely of the text: Will 100 Artists Draw A 1950 Ford From Memory. In the summer of 2006, The Gagosian gallery advertised a show in Art Forum, using this drawing. A week after I saw that ad, I contacted Gagosion in New York City, and asked permission to use the drawing for a show. I wanted to actualize the drawing, work on finding 100 artists to draw that Ford. Ed Ruscha gave me permission; I started to find my artists.
I want to figure out what each of those words mean, can memory be about what you saw in a movie, or stories of your parents first car, or whatever the cultural platonic ideal of this machine is? (Is it even a car? I have seen plenty of trucks)
I also want to extend the identity of the category “artist”. Here I include graffiti workers, comics creators, illustrators of all kinds, in addition to those in the gallery system.
Lastly, I am asking what drawing means. Drawing has become popular, because the defining characteristics have become more ambiguous, mostly because it never maintained the historical supremacy of painting of sculpture. So even the most ardent minimalists, the people who considered painting dead, drew. In this way, Ruscha, with his conceptual/linguistic heritage, makes an all American koan.
The show is a challenge to Ruscha as well, he asked for 100 artists to be asked, he did not require the work itself. By completing the task to a degree farther then expected I want to return to the importance of mark making, to out-conceptualize the conceptualists.
Note on Installation:
I want a room as close to the white cube as possible. On two facing walls, I want one of them to have the 100 drawings pinned to the wall, unframed and unmated. On the opposite wall, facing the 100 drawings, I want Ruscha’s work to be framed, matted, and centered. I want the installation to be passive aggressive, an aesthetic facing off.

reba's special
when whoever is in new england is thru w. you--martina mcbride
rebas first big hit, and its so passive, no agression at all, no anger, just a weak, deseparion--whenever you quit fucking that broad, come back ome, and i will make everything okay. the only thing that redeems it, i think is the hope and strength of will, the confidence that Reba is a better catch then anyone else, and also the regionalism, the tension b/w oklahama and the east. i dont think that mcbrides version of this has either that regionalism, or the will. the song always reminds me of Jolene, too--but Dolly can get angry, and Jolene while similar in theme, lacks the anger
why havent i heard from you--kelly clarkson
clarkson moving from AA to country, and she does it so well. a honky tonk number, and i love the step down vocals that she does to get to the chorus, that and the refrain of why havent i heard from you, vamps just this side of torch...she also seems to have dropped the oversinging required by american idol
vince gill talks about her as a farm girl, i keep forgetting that she branded cattle, and barrell raced, and all of that work...and that she has been here for 34 years, i mean the sitcom is shit, and her songs have become more and more formualic, but for example, why isnt she in the hall of fame?
speaking of the sitcom, genuinely awkard...just liters of goop, really a roast would have been better, and they are qauting websters, this must have taken 20 minutes (is there anything salicious about her, any rumours--i mean i know about the plain crashes...)
the greatest man i never knew--leann rimes
i cant accurately judge daddy songs it makes me melt uncritically when country singers talk about the taciturn man who softens...Rimes does a workable version of this
trisha yearwood natters on, a bit, but i like the reclaiming of girl singers, and the acknowledgement that record company often screwed over women--i wonder if her moving into acting, producing, etc is about not being able to negioate a career in music
loretta lynn asks reba macentire to "go and get on a drunk", yearwood offers top drive
the night the lights went out in georgia--jennifer nettles
i dont know who she is, but this is my favourite performance so far, dar, dramatic, with a fierce, richness--and she roars it up so its barely in control, geniunely angry, there are a couple of reba songs, the fancy cover, this song, that talk about the south, small towns--the line dont trust a soul to a backwood southern man, because the judge has got blood on his hands, is an angry corrective to the mayberry kitsch that wanders in
she talks about how her mother told her it took twice as much effort then men...
is there life out there--wynonna
cause i grew up in a house where all women worked, in various versions, i dont consdier this as much as i should, my mother is moved deeply by it, and she considers it to be a femminist touch stone, wynonna has lost the deep blues power, the controlled shouting of her other work
keith urban talks of reba as being part of a "pratical compassion", plugs wal mart, i didnt realise that she was responsible for mammograms in rural communities though...
faith hill, im not exactly sure what she is singing, but she sure knows how to wring every drop of melodrama out of it (she makes the word lie, last literally, 18 syllables)

dolly makes fun of reba shilling for dillards, then breaks out the blue grass, making how blue sound so tennous and lovely, etheral and almost fleeting, less angry then it should have been, i think that dollys move to this kind of singing is a really clever way of working past a tired voice, and then she says it wasnt that good--it was excellent, and i think the umilty is geniune
reba and dolly then sing the last verse together
Miss Baraba Mandrell
it is my goal in life to be refered to as Miss Anthony Easton. They talk about the colour aqua, and uses the line "those personal places that we share as women" and then miss mandrell talks about jesus, and is the first person to actually mention the plane crash, and she is crying, and its moving, oddly enough, and all of that is in order to introduce tricia yearwood
trisha sings, and shes excellent, and i think shes feeling it, but its almost too perfect, and the piano/strings/melissima is so cinematic
we can safely ignore andy mcdowell, right
it gets really weird, megan mullaly does annie oakley, making the queerest song in the show even queerer (and well reba made it unqueer) (ie you cant get a man with a gun)
and god do i hate dakota fanning
and then george the first (one of the most fascinating aspects of the redstate and bluestate books was how geniune george ones love for coutnry was, and how it struck me as the one thing that he and his son had in common, but his son was capable of using the music as a way of connecting to an audience (and they travelled to greece together, thats just bizarre, can you imagine reba and barabara bush together?)
and alec baldwin, they are just dragging shit out of thin air in the last 20 minutes, though the victory, hunting dog story is really funny (they were in south pacific together on broadway, that i needed to see)
she has sold 50m albums (are we sure that she isnt in the hall of fame?)
james denton mentions the infamous red dress at the cma awards...
i really love the sogn does he love you, but i am not really sure that martina macbride has the power to complete it...and i dont think clarksons work on the song matches the original in sheer bitchery
adn then it continuies to meander, reba has the last word, and i think shes going to sing fancy, i hope shes going to sing fancy (she does end up saying that she hasnt finished singing, i hope thats the case)
