i blog therefore i am:
Randall Tobias, AIDS ambadassador for the Bush admin, and a fan of abstience only education for everyone, was named as a client of Pamela Marin Associates, the DC Madam. She had dropped Marin for a Central American firm, and i could point out the sexual colonism, and hyprocisy, but really its just too easy

Blaze Star, Arbus, 196?
she did several of these, this one is backage at the two o clock club at baltimore, and i lvoe how tired it, she looks like a professonial, and taking her clothes off, is as much work, and has as little glamour as anything else.
Charles Phoneix, Tour of Downtown LA and its pyschogeographic mapping w. disneyland, but better.
i find historical socities obsessed w. recliaming the history of long dead kings hysterically funny in their futilty, i thot the high light was the R3 society, but the arch conserative anglo catholic Society of King Charles The Martyr might trump. From the website: "The Society was founded in 1894 as ‘a Church Defence Union under the banner of the Martyr-King’ and its initial prime objective was ‘intercessory prayer for the defence of the Church of England against the attacks of her enemies" If you want to see examples of said intercessory prayers, please do check out the litrugical sample.
text of the commique for the primates in dar es saalem. the first five items sound like tourist postcards from blackpool. and more of the current unpleasentness
fantastic folk and protest songs from tom smith, who releases a song a week. (he be funny)

Studio Libertiny, 14k bees, one form (its all wax), and a few weeks, and a wax vase, from the dutch design company, who are friends of droog
the ogaden violent uprising that resulted in:
65 Ethopians Dead
9 Chinese Dead
7 Chinese Kidnapped. which will turn into a gong show
Ethopia has claimed that Eretia funds it, Ereteria has blamed somlia.
Ogaden is b/w Somalia and Ethopia, and this all ties into the recent slaugther in Somoalia. the bbc talks about that here. and the cfr provides context here. and even better Global Security dicusses it from the 70s onward. China's reaction to AFrica, is the great lost story, pure capital, and a certain amorality towards capital (uie they are the no 1 foriegn investors in both the Sudan and Zimbabwae, means that these adventures will be going for decades further
remeber thompsons eulogy on nixon, Matt Tiabbi, writing about Yeltsin, in Rolling Stone, exceeds that level of vitirol. An excellent lesson in russian history besides.
HighlightS:
warren ellis plays with publishers weekly, like a bored cat plays with a rat.

interview with larua bush, who manages to be one of the mean girls, highschool sentiment, pentagon disinformation, and pure contillon bullshit. at least hilary never pretended to be anything but a cagey, oppurtunistic bitch.
marc zoller saltz writes a cogent, adn quite clever formal and techincal analysis of the narrative/visual compoents of zodiac.
a minor narrative of spandex play, porn, and the US army.
if you arent reading Cartoon Modern, you are missing great posts, like the original colour studies of 101 Dalmations
I think that the political moralizing, and the hirealism matched by even higher camp, might make daniel edwards the new jeff koons--esp the almost reacationary moralism remade as postmodern spectacle.

HighlightS:
If Boris Yeltsin ever had a soul, it was not observable in his early biography. He sold out as soon as he could and was his whole life a human appendage of a rotting, corrupt state, a crook who would emerge even from the hottest bath still stinking of booze, concrete and sausage.
But while Gorbachev's childhood turned him into a pathologically self-hating wannabe, a scheming, two-faced party intellectual who privately lusted after French villas and foreign-tailored suits and would eventually be undone by his habit of parading in public with a wife who wore jewels and furs, Yeltsin never left the mud and never tried to. He remained a mean, thieving country drunk his whole life.
his "life" was, until today, just a biological technicality -- it is hard to kill what has, inside, been dead all along.
He likewise outlived the Petersburg Democrat Galina Starovoitova, the reporter Anna Politkovskaya, the muckraker Artyem Borovik, the Duma deputy Yuri Shekochikhin, the spy Alexander Litvinenko -- they were all too human in one way or another for today's Russia, and died of unnatural causes at young ages, but not Yeltsin. While all of those people were being murdered or dying in mysterious accidents, Yeltsin spent his golden years in an eerie state of half-preserved, perpetual almost-death.
This pattern repeated itself over and over again, and eventually I got so fed up with it that, when he got sick again in 1999, I ran a cover in my Moscow newspaper The eXile that showed a picture of a wobbling Yeltsin over the headline, "DIE, ALREADY!!!
"Inconsistent reformer" is exactly the kind of language the American media typically used when describing Yeltsin during a period when he and his friends were robbing the Russian state like a gang of New Jersey truck hijackers.
hat Americans missed during Yeltsin's presidency -- and they missed it because American reporters defiantly refused to report the truth of the matter -- was that under Boris Yeltsin the Russian state itself became little more than a cash factory for gangland interests.

looking thru lebowitz's a photogs life, which is about a qauter hollywood, a qauter politicos, and half family snap shots, i realised that what lebowitz does best (ie gaudy, campy, self impt, ego ridden shit that requires costumes and cranes and a crew of 12) is worthwhile, that elegance and a sort of surface, reductive beauty, while hated or ignored by photo critics, has something going for it, even if it isnt kinky...i cant think of a photog who is a better flatterer of those in power, and of the state, and so in her best work, she is a court painter in the most classical sense of that term, and well court paniters are needed.
the political work is grainy, and behind the scenes, but badly composed, exhausting, and w/o focus (ie its blurry, grainy, and the eye has no place to settle. the campaign photos of clinton,et. al do not seem to be about the location, or where they are or about the history, or anything like that, they seem to be about recording the fact that lebowitz has the ultimate in access, she has a monstrous ego, and the most fascinating photos of the clinton campaign, was that for a person who was so photogenic, and who placed himself in the camera lens for everything and everyone (think of him on the cover of esquire, with his legs spread, the invitation of phallic obsession) these were the only photos that ignored his charisma, they proved that it was possible to make a boring photo of the man, his grotesquries, and his luridness the ultimate flash, its like making a bad photo of elvis, or james brown--& if i wasnt convinced that she was (is) a woman that requires a retinue, and isnt interested in the thinking as much as the action, i could say things about the dispersion of punctum, or the body poltic, or the clever deconstructing of her personae as a court photog and his persoane as americas great satyr, and how this was a clever refusal, or at least an analytical extension or something like that, but it just bad picture taking (which is frustrating, because her hollywood pictures are v. visually clever and have an instinctual animal hunger that hides under the staid convention of vanity fair and vogue work)
which brings me to the shots of susan, her parents, etc. it requires a whole bunch of back story. susan and annie as a couple was weird, the intelletual and the instinctual, the cold european and the worshipper of american excess, the woman who wrote for so long about the difficulties of photography, and didnt seem to like it v. much, and the person who made her living making some of the most shallow work ever. they broke up, got together, had kids (one named susan, and i keep thinking of the suragacy could be an extension of both of their professional lives), and then one left for a younger woman, annie was hurt. the book's photos are polysemic, are they to record the family, to place sontag as part of the extended lebowitz clan, the black and whtie, fairly ehremtic, and lonely photos of annies mothers and sisters, with or without sontag, suggest an oddly matriachal envolping, one that sontag seems to resist, and the more candid photos seem to be about control and humilation. they are too intimate to be interesting, and when you see photos (a sieres of 6 or 7) of sontag in paris at new years, in teh back of a limo, or in a group of family, all dressed as teddy bears, its bizzare, and almsot uncontextazible, and i cannot think of anything, except, this is to make the angualr, difficult, knife like analysis of sontag into a soft friendly thing, the fuck you scowl that she manages while doing this, ruptures the image. the photos of sontag dying, you take photos of the dead, for medical or religious photos, they make a reliqury of her dying, and also become autopsies, the thing is, that you would figure pictures of anyone dying, or snapshots in general, have a sort of universal feeling, and so the popularity of found photographs is that the stories are unnessceary--but knowing more and more about these two women, one thinks this is a violation of sontag, this is annie saying, i outlived the bitch or my photos have value, or that i can make you as iconic and famous as brad pitt, splayed on a motel room bed...i can own you, this image of you becomes a lebowitz, and is not a sontag--that wrestling of private signifers versus public audience is soemthing that we have tried to figure out, since taking pictures started, and the ethics of what to shoot where, become centered if you trust the audience (arbus' photos of the famous, of blaze star or james brown, for example, are so intimate, and so broken, because they are v. much abuot the quiet before the fury starts, and the two drag queens in the back of the cab by goldin, do the opposite, for similar results) but lebowitz doesnt knwo how to frame a snap shot, hasnt taken a snapshot in her life, so the sheen and the pretty that we expect of her fails to emerge, and it looks like we are staring on something improper (victorian morturary photography, comes to mind)--maybe it also has a resonance with the market---all of the questions sontag raised about image making, documentary, art, etc, that continue to remain unresolved, and the impherablity of the media, etc, have been hidden, because when someone pays 5m for something, it is art, no matter what the philosophers said, and the art critics, who dont like lebowitz spend time on how she is just a commerical photog, playing the hi/lo game for the same reasons--this book seems to be an act of revenge, and ironically, it works to continue sontags ideas about what photos mean, more then lebowitz glam of hollywood exchanges.

uiet about us, we have forgot thee our God, and refused to hearken to the still voice of thy word, and to obey thy commandments: But now we see, how terrible thou art in all thy works of wonder; the great God to be feared above all: And therefore we adore thy Divine Majesty, acknowledging thy power, and imploring thy goodness. Help, Lord, and save us for thy mercy's sake in Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

joe asked about when we saw the risen x, and i answered thusly:
i dont think i have ever met him, i think one of the reasons i keep w. xianity is the hope that maybe i will. i am having doubts that will happen
and i thot about seeing the holy spirit, which seems to be about the same. so here is where i felt the holy spirit (and listening to mahlia jackson last nite, in the rain, waiting for the bus, and how she talked about the spirit of god in terms that could only be martial, i mean she belted, and then the band started playing fucking marches, so dont assume this is mahlia, cause she and i dont hear god the same way)
1) sometimes at compline, the only calm and holy moment, at st johns, w. the moon full, the chill in the air, and the campfire, feeling safe that the spirits of the dark would be pushed back
2) the first mass i went to, before i was a catholic
looking at spring, by agnes martin, at the tate musuem, in london. (but not at st pauls)
3) my first orgasm
4) walking behind the beaver pond, and praying as hard as i had prayed before, across the hiway from gethsamani, and hearing the wind thru the rushes, and the traffic moan, at the same time... (i want to write more about that walk sometime, b/c i think almost all of my hangups about jc orignaite there)
5) on the bus from newmans seminary, about 8:30 am, killing time, and half reading sections of the book of common prayer, and having the words kind of swirl betwixt me...
5, and sometimes, the pleasure and the ambiguity comes, and it might not be the holy spirit, but it is sometimes divine?
walking thru the city, at midnite, half conversing with someone who is familal
the cabride from pearson to raymonds
sitting in english bay, on a cedar, beside glenys' house
sometimes, some food based rituals. (diner blts are always holy, eating at someones house for the first time sometimes, birthday dinner, hotcrossbuns/eggnog)
easter vigil, palm sunday, midnite mass...
some art, some artists (mostly abstract, and mostly minimal)
the smell of lillies.
the way certain boys do certain things
music, lots of music (aaron & i talked last nite about music, and we decided that every child should get a package when they are born, with the note, this is what we humans have done in the last 100 years, or even 1000...and it would have a digital card, and it would include things like louis armstrong's hot 5 and 7s, glen gould playing bach, hank williams being both meloncholy and amusing, byrds madigrals, madonna's like a prayer, britney's toxic, any version of to know him is to love him, norwegian wood, mozart's cosi fan tutti or don juan, etc etc, ymmv)
reading the hymnal in the choir loft
the mystery of communinon
sometimes passing of the peace, though v. rarely lately, and mostly at joes.
labyrinths, mandelas, et. al

The Bathurst community is an inclusive, participatory and Affirming Congregation. We invite and use the gifts of all our members.
We seek to nourish the Spirit by strengthening our connectedness with one another and with all people, especially the poor and marginalized. We seek to strengthen our connectedness with the Earth and all creatures.
We understand the Spirit to be revealed not only in Jesus and in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures; but also in nature and in the spirituality of other traditions.
We recognize and celebrate a wide diversity of ability, gender, origin, age, income and sexual orientation. We welcome all those who wish to grow with us. We encourage people to live out their gifts in the life and work of our congregation.

We make a public welcome to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people as well as other marginalized groups

We believe that all people are created in the image of God and are unconditionally loved by God. All persons are free to enjoy God's gifts of love, joy and intimacy. We lament injustice done to gay, lesbian and bisexual persons in Church and society.
We, the people of Bloor Street United Church, are committed to creating a community where people of all ages, genders, races, sexual orientations, differing abilities, ethnic backgrounds, and economic circumstances are welcome. We seek to use the gifts of all persons, regardless of sexual orientation, in every aspect of congregational life, including designated ministry. We pray for God's spirit to guide us as we work for reconciliation and justice for all persons in both church and society.
Bloor United, Toronto
Centenary is an Affirming Congregation, one of approximately 30 such United Church congregations across Canada. We are a community of Christians who have chosen to make a public commitment, in the name of Jesus Christ, to being a safe and positive family of faith, which extends acceptance, offers support, and seeks divine justice for:
The marginalized in our society
Those with chronic illness
Those with extraordinary challenges, be they physical, emotional or mental and
Those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender
This does NOT mean that we are ONLY a congregation for the GLBT community.
It means that we are a Community of Welcome for anyone and especially for anyone who has not felt welcome elsewhere, whatever the reason.
We are committed to:
*Being a faith family of hope
* And a Spiritual home for anyone who is ready to have their spiritual woundedness healed
Cenetrary, Hamilton
We, the people of Glen Rhodes United Church, are determined that our life together will be fully inclusive for people of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, differing abilities, ethic origins and economic circumstances.
Therefore, we hope that God will work in us so that we will be a sensitive congregation, willing to share our faith and gifts in language and worship, in the life and work of our church and wherever God calls us to do justice in the wider community, with compassion, fun and laugher.

manuel is an "Affirming Congregation" committed to welcoming and supporting all people, regardless of race, class, gender, or sexual orientation.
Immanuel believes in an "open table".
When we gather around the communion table,
we gather as friends and neighbours,
as seekers and sojourners.
We gather, not with all the answers, but with our many questions,
our worries, our struggles, our hopes and our joys.
All are welcome at the table,
which belongs, not to us, but to our God.
It is open to all who seek to live as Jesus would have us live.
There is a place for you at this table,
whether you belong to this church,
or to another church, or to no church at all.
The will to ground your lives in the message and ministry of Jesus
and to receive the mercy offered at the table
is the only requirement for admission,
and even then, your will need not be perfect.
This table is a starting place for lives lived graciously in the world.

two ideas
my photos are queer, b/c they are about trying to place myself in patterns of mainstream existence, trying to make sure that i am safe and present in a world that might not be. (and b/c sometimes they feature naked men)
my photos are autistic because they work as a translating device b/w how i speak and what i see, and how i conceptualise and how i do.

dozens of eldon dedini's cartoons of satyrs and nymphs. this guy is one of my favourite cartoonists, pillowly and sensous, funny, self mocking, and also wickedly meta (the mythology of playboy and the mythology of greeks, as places of tension is remarkably fecund groun, plus i want to fuck every woman he draws.)

Medina, who claims to be the Anti Christ, makes millions from his TV studios in Miami, admits to wantign to deal coke, and attacks Catholicism and Catholic Ritual, both poltiically (claiming that central america is owned by rome) and sexually (calling the pope a faggot who should wear pants), is a fascinating ammalgation of folk relgiion, mass media spectacle, and shock tactics. i dont know if hes going to be the new che or the new jim jones.

i dont know who took this photo, or what her name is, or when the photo was taken, but that adds to the punctum, im in love.

the microcompact home is a prefab so fab, it was designed by areonautics engineers (i was talking to chelsea about how as a photog everything i wanted to do, was done already, by atget, and then the newtopos, and there was only varriations of it, like jazz, or something, i asked her if the same was for engineers, did they think it was all built already, and she said that her work no, but the conversations she had with aeronautic workers, v. much so--so i like that they are now getting into housing.
this boston show about conceptual craft, was close to the banff show that i wanted to do, abuot transgressive craft, i wonder if it means that it will be less or more likely that portland will take it.

I think that the rape and gore in modern horror films celebrated violence against women in a really galling way. that this image was considered public enough that it went up on the sunset strip, is really disturbing.

Edwin, who stood near at this rite of generous enthusiasm, softly whispered to Wallace as he turned towards his troops; "But amongst all these brothers, cease not to remember that Edwin was your first. Ah, my beloved general, what Jonathan was to David I would be to thee!"
Wallace looked on him with penetrating tenderness, his heart was suddenly wrung by a recollection which the words of Edwin had recalled. "But thy love, Edwin! passes not the love of woman!"--"But it equals it," replied he; "what has been done for thee, I would do; only love me as David did Jonathan, and I shall be the happiest of the happy." "Be happy then, my dear boy," answered Wallace, "for all that ever beat in human heart for friend or brother, lives in my heart for thee." Janet Porter, The Scottish Cheifs, 1810, pg 186, qouted by The Little Professor

on grindhouse:
i keep thinking about the second one, tarintinos, and remember seeing vanishing point and celluiod closet about the same time, and i dont remember which one i saw first, but vanishing point, i could never apperciate because of the explicit violence towards queers, and one of the problems i have w. the grindhouse genres is that one of the things they grind is women.
so having four women being killed in the usual way, and then having a similar set of women, refuse to be killed, and to have both sets be african american, or hispanic as well--i think that it was a corrective to the genres that tarintino has been playing w. all of his career--& i think his half of this, plus kill bill are essays about the history of culture, i dont think they nessc. work as cinema as much as deconstructions of cinema, or of the aesthetics of the real, so when you have people genuinely frightened, when the danger seems real (ie when they are going over the overpass, and they keep, almost praying no dead end no dead end no dead end, or when one has to be coaxed into playing sailors mast, etc) it seems to me that he is, well not refuting, but reworking what he thot about film in works like pulp fiction.
so i didnt think it worked as a double feature, i thot rodiguez(sp) work was subpar, and the best bits of it were v. close to tarintino anyways, but i think that death car, was fascinating, in its construction.
(or as my friend ashley said as he walked out of the theater--who knew that godards weekend and the duke of hazzards went so well together)
(and i saw maybe 20/5 people leaving after the first half, so they missed the second movie, but i cant imagine an interest in grindhouse as a genre is that large)

Proving again that Joe Esterhauz is a prophet.
more proof that the millons spent on airport secuirty is theater.
joe keeps claiming anglican bishops work againt queer folx is about other things, the bishop of york denying for resurection comes immediately to mind as an example, i figuring not hiring people b/c they are queer (as the bishop of herfortshidire is accused of) counts pretty clearly in the hatintg fags camp.
shayne ehamns seires of photos of mushrooms have a directness and a clairty that reaches somewhere past point and click documentation and into the alice adams kind of scientific processing.
the college lefT continues to treat the 60s as a courting zombie, and i dont think it is taken seriously b/c the tactics, etc have changed, they want SDS, but they dont want the weatherman, for example. i like the port huron statement, my parents were members, i understand the seductive appeal, and i understand the need to find ones own history, but come on guys, push harder.
Funny and Hip anti AIDS, pro condom ads

Sometimes i want to be initated into the dark cult of the machine, this is one of those times: the bugatti veyron at its top speed of 253 mph.
vintage photos from boston radical events in the mid 70s. man did those middle class hippies know how to dress.
i feel about julie christie, the way i feel about rampling or denuve, except rampling found orzon, and denuve, has worked steadily. please give the woman more work, as this gaurdian interview suggests she can handle it.
Dusan Sitak who has found every way of devolping photography in the last 150 years, and is trying to persever and catalog them, mantains the vitality of both regualr snapshots, and "art", his refusal to split the difference makes his sisphyian quest heroic. (
i was also shocked, with photogs history of bathroom chemists, how few perocesses there were.
some yalies burnt the american flag, one of those yalies was a member of skull and bones.
speaking of skull and bones, i think both Cheney and Bush have completely lost the plot.
from an ilxor, i forgot who, but its a great photo.

things i want to write about:
Tim McGraw's Latest
1) aware of the genres history
2) sometimes the vocals fail, or arent nearly as swinging as they need to be
3) his work w. faith hill, aesthetic direction, but also how its kind of played out
4) how he tells stories
5) the gorgeousness of his voice
6) the moral ambiguity, and the willingness to be (at least) slightly edgy w. the lyrics
7)how it drags, and how its an obv singles album.
8) country as a singles medium? (and how hooky some of the work is, esp the supercheesy/super effective flyway)
Amy Winehouse Back to Black
1) Apple, Amos, Phair, Power, and that history (ie image vs work, maturing)
2) Anglo History (ie jagger/diddley)
3) how she really isnt that bluesy
4) the awareness, the wry wit
5) anihlating self in a completely unsexy way, but how that destruction of self is supposed to be sexy
6) how critics, esp. indie oriented male critics, emphasize a kind of wounded girlhood.
7) the album as an effective aesthetic object.
8) the album as a femminist working thru
9) how those three things are concurrent but against each other, how they work together and apart.
10) the awesome way she says fuckery.
Spring Awakening
1) Kander/Ebb
2) The Future Belongs to Me Scene as erotic locus, in the film
3) Teen Pop
4) how the absence of desire becomes overwhelmingly sexual, the cult of abseince.
5) how this album manages to work all of these things using clever aural pastiches
6) History of the Story, Young Wether, and The Weimar
7) How it works as a pop album, because the staging is impossible to see really (except maybe in youtube?)
8) intellectual excercise of great amusement
9) religious context, and attempts to prevent decadence
10) oblique queerness.
Tracey Lawerence
1) For such a bad boy, its a really soppy album
2) cheap production
3) kenny/tim doesnt really save the album
4) no real singles.

'A person's identity is not to be found in behaviour, nor - important though this is - in the reactions of others, but in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going. The individual's biography, if she is to maintain regular interaction with others in the day-to-day world, cannot be wholly fictive. It must continually integrate events which occur in the external world, and sort them into the ongoing 'story' about the self.' (Giddens 1991: 54).

I felt a clearing in my mind
As if my brain had split;
I tried to match it, seam by seam,
But could not make them fit.
The thought behind I strove to join
Unto the thought before,
But sequence ravelled out of reach
Like balls upon the floor.
(i dont know why i said frigate, thats the dickinson i was talking about)

Talking to dr mills today, he basically said that they didn’t have a diagnosis, and that they were just treating symptoms, I didn’t bother asking symptoms of what, I keep thinking that im too fucked up to fix, or at least the fixing that could be done, has been done, for aspies, etc.
so im stuck with where im at, and ive known this for a while, but coded, or personal discoursing fleeing into unofficial discourse is impt. And it was kind of freaking me out, making me sad what ever, I got really upset about ity, but im slowly realizing its almost as if I have defeated the medical model, I have conquered the pysch system…I should get a badge with uncle michaels fist on it.
my status in groups has been in jeopardy, b/c I have been having more fall down and go booms, chair flying, etc, and they are worried about the safety of the group, and I have destablised too quickly, the thing is that I am never stable, I keep being asked my thereputic goals, and I don’t know what they are (except maybe to get one straight answer from one of my therapists, and not have them pawn me off on another nurse or another doctor or whatever), and I wonder if this lack of therputic goals, and then spending a month picking on every scab extant was really the best way of going about things.
thats maybe the other thing, being too fucked up to fix can be compared to the radical decentering, the post bear or post queer discourses that surround my sexuality or the sort of catholic sort of anglican linguistic/power games w. jesus that I am settling around my head, in the sense that my personhood, for the last few years has been radical fractured, and that fracturing has become a fecund, thing…maybe this is the last step in my mental health, if I can view my sex, my gender, my god, my family as ambigious and detached to personhood, maybe there is nothing wrong w. who I am as a person, that the depression or the anxiety or the sucidial ideation will come, or it will go, like dickinsons poem about frigates, and to expect their arrival is futile…maybe going onto another program will be futile
& so the best thing about group then, is figuring out other people, hearing other peoples stories, finding sympathy and love for the other (because everyone has an other) and having that fracturing be able to anchor others. That dialectic is the hard part, or not dialectic, but the negation b/w the constant fracturing of self and keeping everyone together.

my status in groups has been in jeopardy, b/c I have been having more fall down and go booms, chair flying, etc, and they are worried about the safety of the group, and I have destablised too quickly, the thing is that I am never stable, I keep being asked my thereputic goals, and I don’t know what they are (except maybe to get one straight answer from one of my therapists, and not have them pawn me off on another nurse or another doctor or whatever), and I wonder if this lack of therputic goals, and then spending a month picking on every scab extant was really the best way of going about things.
thats maybe the other thing, being too fucked up to fix can be compared to the radical decentering, the post bear or post queer discourses that surround my sexuality or the sort of catholic sort of anglican linguistic/power games w. jesus that I am settling around my head, in the sense that my personhood, for the last few years has been radical fractured, and that fracturing has become a fecund, thing…maybe this is the last step in my mental health, if I can view my sex, my gender, my god, my family as ambigious and detached to personhood, maybe there is nothing wrong w. who I am as a person, that the depression or the anxiety or the sucidial ideation will come, or it will go, like dickinsons poem about frigates, and to expect their arrival is futile…maybe going onto another program will be futile
Brad Paisley
Ticks
He was interviewed in EW this week, and Paisley talked about how important this song was, because Country talked about being outdoors. Now, this song is about the eternal joys of having sex outside (and it has some real naughty lines, esp. for someone who proclaims his class and from someone whose last great hit was about Mama and Jesus.)
The problem is that country rarely talks about the outdoors anymore, except as a playground, and ideas of nature have become a playground for the suburban. The song then, is kind of creepy--he wants to take a woman from the bar, and bring her to a secluded "moonlit" meadow, where he will strip her, and "crawl all over her". The checking for ticks sounds like a cute cover for something sinister.
I never really got Paisley, his realtionship to women has been courtly in that suburban megachurch kind of way, and this is the first time that he has ever sung something explicit in its eroticism, and done another way, it could have destabilised the outdoors/suburban;bar/moonlight dialectic that infuses much country.
But the way he sings it, it has a serial killer vibe.

rev joe was talking to his steel sculpture friends, and he said they said that 3D art was mostly eclipsed in the 20th century by 2D, esp. print work, and i thot about that for a while...the problem is that it wasnt a 2D vs 3D thing, just that the most impt or interesting 3D objects in the 20th century were something else:
ie
readymade:

r mutt, fountain, urinal, 1913, remade 1967

man ray, Cadeau (Gift), c. 1958 (replica of lost 1921 original)
painted flat iron with row of tacks, heads glued to bottom

Picasso, Bullhead, i dont remember the date

Giovanni Anselmo, Untitled, 1968, Lettuce, Copper Wire, Granite
(when the lettuce rots, the granite block falls)

Carl Andre, Suculus, Western Red Cedar, 1980 (this was a bit of a cheat, because he cut and compiled these)

Koons, New Hoover Convertibles, 1987

Hirst, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living
1991
Tiger shark, glass, steel, 5% formaldehyde solution
assemblage:

Meret Oppenhiem, 1936, My Nursemaid

Cornell, Hotel Eden, Assemblage, 1945

Jasper Johns, Target with Plaster Casts, 1955
(same year as Rbergs infamous goat)

Louise Nevelson, Dawns Wedding I, Painted Found Wood, 1959

R Rberg, Pilgrim, Combine, 1960

Ed Kienholz, Portable War Memorial, 1968
(this might be my favourite material list ever:
Edward Kienholz. 1968. The portable war memorial. Plaster casts, tombstone, blackboard, flag poster, restaurant furniture, photographs, working Coca-Cola vending machine, stuffed dog, wood, metal, fiberglass)

Sarah Lucas, Au Nauteral, 1994
reclamation:

Warhol, Silkscreened, assembled plywood, 1969 (also see piles)(is this a goof on minimalism?)

Koons, Jackson and Bubbles, 1989 (which is a reclamation of craft, kitsch, the baroque, pop, and gild/guilt, and which cannot work as a single entry, Robert Rosenblausm essay about Koons and his mirror work, has a lesser impact, b/c RR is unwilling to engage the formal implications of the 3rd form) (also, the moral severity of the made in heaven sieres would be lessened if it didnt recall/reclaim catholic polychromed sts as ikons of new protestant morality)

My Lonesome Cowboy, Murakami, 1998
From the Walker: "Dave Hickey, writing for Artforum in December 1998, compared the baroque extravagance of My Lonesome Cowboy to Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Theresa." (hes talking about how bernini uses space, how he commans the centrality of a large architechtual overwhelming, and returns it to one ecstatic figure, whos' vertical movement suggests xtc, its also obv a referent to anime, and western exoticism of oreintalism

Michael Graves, Team Disney Building Burbank, 1991

4 of 8, Dwarf Head, Sillicon, 2003, Paul McCarthy

Phillip Stark, gnome stools

Rachel Whiteread, Untitled, 16 Spaces (again, a reclaiming of minimalism, and also extending a neuman idea, these are sillicone, nauman was plaster)
Pile:

Eva Hesse, Right After,” 1969
more floating then piling, but like fred sandblack, the implication of falling and then piling is vital (and that the 3rd dimension is implied via the absence of object, the presence of space, light, etc, that its hinted at)

Richard Serra, 1968, Untitled, Rubber

Andre, Equivalent VIII 1966, Firebrick
(this one is interesting, b/c it is the same as his copper/steel floor peices, but the 3d means something, i just cant quite figure it out) (and placing it w. the serra, it has a really interesting discusion of the movement of the late 60s avant, because serra went from humble, almost impercetiple peices on the floor or as drippings, etc, performance/installation works to something else)

Felix Gonzales Torres, Public Opinon, Untitled (Public Opinion), 1991.
Black rod licorice candy, individually
wrapped in cellophane (endless supply), ideal weight, 700 pounds,
dimensions variable. (i want to talk about this peice a bit more on easter)
others:

John McCraken, Painted Planks, conintuing (the postioning of the planks are the only thing that maek the work 3d, hung on the wall, traditionally as paintings, they would be minimalist releifs)

Thisi nstallation shot, of three colourfields, with Ann Truitts Summerfiled, in the foregrond makes my point for me, her realtionship to the washington colourfield school, her work moreo n painting then sculpting, even her banal shapes, make her a painter, or an anthologist of colour'sfunction rather then smoeone who caresabout shape in a space (perhaps?)
judd
there could be a million i could qoute here, if you read this blog, you should know what a judd looks like, that judd refused to call his work sclupture, that he placed them on walls, or made the sides the same, that he sabotoged and constructed his 3 dimensionality at the same time, suggests the radical displacement most 3d work had in the history of the 20th century
notes:
i know i cherry picked here, and i could have made as much of a 20th century list, of people who sculptued in more traditional ways, and surrived (ie but not limited to jacob epstein, hans jean arp, hepworth, moore, caro, smith, etc) but i think the point is, that it wasnt that 3d was eclipsed by 2d but 3d refused the label of sculpture, or at elast bucked under it
