I am stuck in a small town that hates me. I am called faggot from the windows of moving pickups, I have trouble finding work, and everyone knows my family and me. I have been sick this year, depressed, and have seizures as well. It has been cold and extremely lonely. I grew up in this town, and every time it gets bad, I go back to my mother's house. Listening to the Mountain Goats' The Sunset Tree once a week for a year has been inspiring. It feels strange to say this, but it has given me hope and a reason for living. John Darnielle's rampant optimism, tempered by a hard realism, reminds me to put one foot in front of the other.

Alec Soth takes photos of the pyschosexual implications of Niagra falls--modernist comments on the motels, portraits of the people who marry them (in clothes, out of clothes, documentary pix of weddings), scans of found love notes, tourist kitsch snapshots of the falls. They work indvidually as aesthetic objects, but even better as a seires that plumbs the poltical implications of middle/working class desire.

Here is my last review for Stylus. Its a good one, I am going to miss the rigour of Todd's editing.Page France

This is the Sotheby Provence note, on a catalog entry, selling a Soutine painting, estimated at about 9 million canadian:

Henri Bing, Paris.
Jos. Hessel, Paris.
Colle collection, Paris.
Private collection, by February 1943 and thence by descent to the present owner.

(here) The coyness of this entry is really angering, not noting what happenend in 1943, a good example of the convient lacunae of captial.

“Those deficiencies were so significant that we were precluded from accomplishing our stated objectives,” the auditors said of US officials in Hillah being unable to account for US$97 million of the US$120 million in Iraqi oil revenues earmarked for rebuilding projects. What it was spent on is here I could talk about the corruption here, but frankly, its too easy.

amputation rates for american troops are twice that of past wars.

The hazing of some russian soilders lead to gangrene and amputations, brutal.

The Southern Baptists are taking the view of Ratzinger in the sense that explicit ideological purity is more important then dissent, or individual congerations, or religous traditon. They have committed a schism against the liberals on issues of biblical inerrancy, are now demanding loyalty on other issues of poltics. We are going to have these pure armies, who's refusal at dissent makes plowing the oppostion, much easier.

Naomi Wolf Jewish femministspent some time in upstate new york, entered a "light mystical state" , and had a vision of Jesus, an actual visitation of the divine. Was it disrespectful of me to laugh at this deeply?

I really like the colours here, the abstraction, the domesticity, the rigour, how minimal they are, and how uncozy. I also think that they would be much better as polaroids, but maybe i am just seeing there square shapes. (Martina Mulllaney, from the Turn In Series, C Prints, 2002, shown in New York, until the end of May)

This Story about soilders in Fayeteville, NC, having m2m sex on camera leads to the interesting question, how does gay for pay interact w. dont ask dont tell--what makes that policy unworkable is not core issues of justice/fairness in relating to identity, but these kind of slippages, when they might not self id as gay, does fucking men make you gay? (esp. w. the rise of straight boy fucking/soilder sailor porn on the www, Steve Zealend is really useful on this, and should be read more fully)

music video of planes landing in oakland, on a grainy super 8, really realyl pretty.

This is George W Bush, on the national sancitty to life day I am no longer planning on parsing or deconstructing the ironies of these texts, just posting them.

i saw this in vancouver once, w/o its cctv apparatus, and with it. it reminded me of prayer wheels and prayer flags. , and the arthur c clarke short story 1000 names of god. there is something eastern, i guess, in the idea of technological interventions and prayer--how machines, not operated by human hands, can still do the work of god. there is something of the rule of st benedict in it too, in the idea that work is prayer, and that work (by extenstion, prayer as well) is an extenstion of the spirtual need to abase the self

the ancient buddha (literally ancient, its an antique, a found object), looking at the noise/snow of the dead television, the narrative of history and humanity interupted, of what happens when banal things like televisions and vcrs interupt (and lasers, prisms, mirrors, neon) affect our gopspace.

his other work, the wicker men made out of tvs; the red, white, blue flag made of stacked 70s philcos (like phils discount house of electronics), but in a high art context are funny, sexy, cute, decadent and decaying. It is funny to think that he never really updated his materials, I wonder what that means? Even in the most recent sculptures, he ddi not move onto anything sci-fi sleek. He is cyberpunk in that way, the future is not the wombs of kubrick but the slagheap banality (brutality?) of Burning Chrome.

I wish I had seen more of his work IRT. He died on Sunday at the age of 79.

(is this more readable?)

i Anthony:

We will be posting your review of Page France today on the site and I
would prefer if it was your last piece that you write for the site.
Your reviews are just too time-consuming for me to edit into a condition
that I feel comfortable posting on the site.

Thank you for all of the effort that you have expended in writing for
our site and good luck in all of your future endeavors.

The problem with your writing?

It's full of run-on sentences, sentence fragments, "its" "it's" "there"
"their" issues, and it doesn't flow very well oftentimes.  Your ability
to construct a coherent narrative throughout a review seemed to be a
problem with most of the things that you sent to us: obviously this
stuff made sense in your head and you wrote it out, but it seemed like
your mind was moving way too fast for your fingers.  Most of the things
that you turned in were struck by a lightning-quick intellect hampered
by not being able to clearly identify or explain the ideas that you were
presenting.

for some reason the world of warcraft bans any clans from identifying as glbtq b/c they want to avoid meanness or homophobia or something, strange.

A bunch of ads from the 50s (plan 59)

I am always suprised how social realist these look, how the ideological set of both soviet communism and american capitalism require the same aesthetic sense (cult of machines, cult of bodies, information conveyed with utter simplicity, primary colours, heavy shadows, etc)

This one is the one i think is the strangest, one of those better living thru chemistry dupont monstroities, betrayed in 20 years by Carson, Bhopal, Three Mile Island, The Love Canal--it has a religious look, the great fair/wrathful hand of god, stripping away the coperal nature of man--(god here is the same white god of watchtower magazines, the baptist bed time stories of uncle arthur, the christ in america of freiberg, all done roughly the same time) but its not religous, the hand is ambigous, is it the invisible hand of adam smith, the metyonomy of duponts chemist, or something else (and on a much stranger note, what it really reminds me of, is that chemistry was really good at stripping skin, incedrary bombs, then the atom bomb, then napalm, there are earlier examples, of course--dalton trumbos johnny get yr gun comes t o mind) but that may be going to far--it really is a phophetically strange image.

For the first time all papal documents, including encyclicals, will be governed by copyright invested in the official Vatican publishing house, the Libreria Editrice Vaticana.

The edict covers Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical, which is to be issued this week amid huge international interest. The edict is retroactive, covering not only the writings of the present pontiff — as Pope and as cardinal — but also those of his predecessors over the past 50 years. It therefore includes anything written by John Paul II, John Paul I, Paul VI and John XXIII.

The decision was denounced yesterday for treating the Pope’s words as “saleable merchandise” and endangering the Church’s mission to “spread the Christian message”.

A Milanese publishing house that had issued an anthology containing 30 lines from Pope Benedict’s speech to the conclave that elected him and an extract from his enthronement speech is reported to have been sent a bill for €15,000 (£10,000). This was made up of 15 per cent of the cover price of each copy sold plus “legal expenses” of €3,500.

Playground by Jennifer Sagnior, its trash, pure trash, nothing redeeming, nothing liberating, nothing transgressive...its about her childhood in the playboy mansion and its the end point of both the brett easton ellis and jacquliene suzanne schools, there is a scene about half way through, where a playboy playmate fucks a 15 yr old school girl in the back of a limo some where on sunset, which may be the best "the decadence of our fucking is the decadence of america", but clean, like physique pictorials (or early playboys, really),

there is also some really awesome food fetish stuff, a weird choosing between heff and her father moment, some wonderful incest subtext, a dead european model who gets dumped after a coke overdose at an LA partyt, some whores, some fashion name dropping, an enormous amount of drugs, all slightly off (she talks about brands too early (prada in the 80s? and drugs too late (quallades in the 80s?)

i dont think its real (what ever that means, call it a postmodern excercise in personae building), i mean its written as a memoir of her and her dad (who was a plastic surgeon/internist/pharmacist/hefs private physican/drugdealer) but its like shes downloaded all possible texts about LA's horrors (boogie nights, valley of the dolls, rules of attraction, ms lonelyhearts, a diamond as big as the ritz, any number of lifetime movies of the week, every memoir, kenneth angers hollywood babylon)

the best thing is that it is written in this really blank, purposfully bad, warholian prose. both larry king and ben affleck

The thing that people forget about cheating is that it's so much fun. When I Think About Cheating? may not be the best example on Womack's album, but it's the most contained and the best sung. The aching, arching voices here remind me of aching, arching bodies.

Brad Paisley's explicit traditionalism works against him. His songs with women are often misogynist, his political work is often retrograde, and his humor is borscht belt stale, but his God work is astonishing. A song like When I Get Where I'm Going features his simplest playing and his deepest singing. There is nothing new here, but because it lacks evangelism and does not tie God to the flag, its holiness moves slowly and earnestly. In this age of Bush and Blair, of fake churchgoing and bad pseudo-metal in churches the size of small towns, which look architecturally like Wal-Marts, having something that sounds like this is like a balm in Gilead.

From The Annual Nashville Scene Poll, a rookie and already 2 comments published, out of about 20!
rest here
1.      Allyson Mitchell Lesbian Sasquatches Paul Petro Toronto
Walking into the narrow spaces at Paul Petro, the three eight foot
sasqutches, the fake fire, and the elaborate wall hangings seduce with
well-crafted oddness. Thinking about the work fully, one realized the
epic theory about gender, history, sexuality and personae that exudes.
Best one-two punch of the entire year.
2.      Justine Cooper. Trophies, Online at
http://www.kashyahildebrand.org/newyork/upcoming/exhibition014.html
There is a certain thrill in the whole behind the scene shtick, w. its
moody, theatrical lighting dramatizes cold museums. That is a
relatively easy thing to do. The best thing about this one photo
though, with its dozens of stags and sheep trophies, is how it refuses
the differences between sports and science, the implications of
taxonomy, and the aesthetics of death that permeates these places. It
also makes it look like some kind of pagan temple.
3.      Paul Freeman MFA Show, FAB Gallery. Edmonton
His repurposing of kitsch decorative elements, into transhuman horrors
are politically and aesthetically radical.
4.      Sammy Harkham—Poor Sailor
A small, smart, comic. Features Farmers, Pirates, Amputations and Axe
work, exciting and solemn in equal measure, with some of the best uses
of blankness and silence in recent memory.
5.      Tabloid Photos, Daily Mail, Kate Moss
Amidst all the sound and fury about her as a bad mother, and the
obviousness of supermodels doing drugs, critics forgot three things.
a)      The photos themselves were well composed, with the coke in the
middle, and Kate hovering over it, had enough of a crowded/blank,
light/dark chicoursou. It was almost classical.
b)      The lighting, and the lo-fi paparazzi aesthetic, had a skuzzy
charm, made even better with thoughts of ubiquitous surveillance
culture.
c)      The triumph of vernacular, digital photography. When camera phones
and amateurs do the best celeb shots, there has been a seismic shift
in the way of looking at the famous.
6.      Christian Patterson's Blog
He is an emerging photographer, in the Shore/Eggleston vein, but one
of the strongest of that sort. His blog regularly updates, but has a
stern editing process, that doesn't overwhelm with thousands of things
that look the same.
7.      Mark Chamberlain Batman and Robin
The best thing about this work is that it is a fine art history of low
art eroticism. Batman and Robin fucking has been a staple of the
Tijuana bibles a few years after the first image, and there has been a
concurrent shadow history of this eroticism ever since. Chamberlain
comments on the clichés, the mirror stage stripping, and the tension
of  these two thoughts.  A law suit made him famous, but the work is
stronger then that.
8.      Personal Alphabet No.3 by Jose Parla
A garish, sort of ugly, high end area rug, made of scrawled graffiti.

The bad thing was that it was in the ersatz gift shop. The best thing
about this winding rainbow is how over the top camp it was—Sol LE
Witts move away from minimal rigor is stranger and stronger—and this
is the wildest yet. Looked like it belonged on a teenage girls
bedroom, to complete a unicorn and pink ruffle motif, and that is a
good thing.
10.      Danielle MacDonald, Ceiling Paintings, Toronto
A painter in her fourth year at OCAD, her functioning between sign and
signifier work without the usual pomo theory claptrap. How she
exchanges meanings between photographs and paintings, her colour
sense, and her realism pushed into hyper-drive, made me excited about
painting in a new way.

Art I Saw:

Antartica
Stephen Bulger
A-

Some of the most haunting photos of the scott and other early antarctic exhibitions, a slection of tight curratorially wise prints, some contemparary reprints, some documentary, some obv chosen on aesthetic grounds. Two mani fotographers, Herbert Pointing for Scott and Frank Hurley for Shackleton. In addition John Meers, nat geo standard penguins and epic ice shit, really cliched, really not worth anythnig. But the pointing and the hurley--photograms (black on white) of ships caught in ice, silver geltains of ships sailing and the ships abonded, three on a wall from the top--butch adventure, happy and excited, next one down tight grins, slight dread, the bottom, exhaustion, paranoia, fear--the kind of look of a mine who cant go back home, who will die...there were others, a guy hoisting shit on his back, with 200 foot ice cliffs towernig over him, people starving, the folds of calving bergs, etc...i think they were the oldest photos ive seen in berg, but amongst my favourites.
i
Fantasy Island
Drake Hotel

mostly kinky but dull, post pop, working dirty, and not working clever...paintings, works on paper, some video, soem photographs (the outsider/insider cant draw but tries easthetic popular) but 3 worth while--super creepy taxideremd/fowered sculptures made form organic and plastic components (ie feet, tooth molds, wax, fabric, and real flowers, toys, etc) looks standardly pretty, but placed at foot level, means looking down, looking down one realises the polite menace of the work. also a mandala like photo work, with geomoetric patterns in rigous geomeotries, seperate, with lots of white space, closer up they are busby berkleesque recreations of americas favourite sluts (cheerleaders) not sure if it was cheap and misogynyst or clever and femminist, but it looked hot.

Edward o Day, middle of a group show install, but some really nice potraits from duane handle, including a photo realist, chalky white skull on a blue black background, large and lightly distended, like an attempt to correct the deaths head in holbeins the ambassodors, and some cahterine heard lace paper creations, delicate, impossibly crafted, sinsiter, and beautiful.

retro at angell had a really nice paul butler (from the series i want to do with him n harcourt), a 6 foot animontronic mickey hand, some goodbad painting, heard's russian dolls, made like she was stripping skin, the last doll a small perfectly craved human heart--like what a prisoner would do w. too much free time.

also saw a brilliant, 60s death metal pop painting, 6 feet high, 4 feet across, of a satanic mass, with naked woman in black cape, pentagrams, inverted crosses, naked babys (one on the altar), but no matter how evil it looked, it just failed (it had this gimmicky, poppy, mel ramos edge)

york quay gallery
brilliant stephen shoreesque, photo show, clean, concise, perfectly sized, well coloured, sqaure cibrachromes of arch(typal) canadiana, in BC mostly--taxidermys, wolf shots, deer (one which might be good for stag show), and then female sasquatches, trailers, rocks in cottage country, etc--hot!

power
on kawara (the gallery is white, gray, black and outside is the granite benches to the lake ontario, it was pissing rain, and windy, so everything had this victorian death hue--making kawaras work even stronger/stranger) the wall panels are interesting, they come in 8 sizes, 6 were shown, and the date was painted in the ocuntry he was in (showing the international nature of the art world) and some of the work was not strictly black, but had brown or navy tones (from the decay of the paint, from another concept) they were uniform in painterly techinque though, and strangely moving...as well, a series of his telegraph work, form the mid 70s to the late 90s, where he told people that he was till alive (what happens when he is dead--is that the central question of kawaras work, what happens when he is dead?) there were also 10 binders, also black, with columns of numbers typed, a million dates, 500k from the future, 500k from the past, facing each other in hermetic glass cases.

also saw a film work by javer tellez, double screen (v. filimc, red velvet curtains to get into the spacE) one was showing dreyers joan of arc, interposed with chalkboard comments, the other was showing interviews with autralian pysch patients--talked hugely but obliquely, about the culture of pysch depections, the role of martyr/saint, the implications of holiness, what it means to be committed, and all of that--intense

a retrospective of art from the old cold city gallery, mostly useless but the discovery of garry neil kennedy--a conceptual painter and poet, who currates the names of paint chips (into the middle east, first nations themes, midatlantic seaboard, seasons, etc) lingustic and vencualur, with a hard minimalist charm

i will write more about brokeback mountian later, but when i saw it on the big screen, it had a a huge effect one me, at cumberland, ray, colleen and pat watched it w. me, at the final scenes, in the last 20 minutes or so, the claustraphobia, the lack of options, the desire denied, the love and affetion becoming simple in its refusal, the claustrophobia of societal expectations and being a prarie queer myself, lonley and looking for a love that i am afraid i will never have it, i broke down, weeping, sobbing, racked w. tears--and i thot to myself, as the hip toronto crowd was streaming around me, that sirk (and his antcendents) had the same afect on women, for the same reasons...and was reminded that movies are often not about what is on screen but what is in us, away from looking...

TwoArticles on the poltical and social implications of philosemitism and anti semitism, approached every few months, but these are more cogent then most, and better constructed. and its an ongoing story, for example: 60 million evangelical "disneyland" built in Iseal

book well worthbuying. Tom Varis took 44 photographs of people duct taping and then spray printing words like spoiled or rotten or no home on left over fridges--i think that these are the most moving photographs i have seen from katrina, b/c they deal with language--the literal (this food is spoiled, this food cannot be eaten) and metaphors (this poltical system is rotten, we havent been eating for a long time) and larger more symbolic desires of language (all of the biblical metaphors b/w eating, language, sufferage and desire for justice) amazing.

speaking of symbolic connections b/w food and language--at Gitmo americans have forced tubes thru the noses of hunger strikers, in order to make them eat.

Anglo poco critic Kwame Mckenzie talks about the sticky implications of peter jacksons aesthetics and poltics of race, making us wonder why he choses properties that have really awful subtext (thinking about this, and the tender strangeness of his early films, the satire, the sex, the loyalties that are mixed and intractable...i wonder if we can get that jackson back)

Hour long radio doc and photo essay by christopher sims, about fort bragg and a miltary family who are waiting for their families. humane, manganging to avoid obvious politics, the sentiment about noble heros, the anti war nonesne, the red state exoticism, he is just here, a silent witness to real lives, the photos are sort of artless, too which is deep artifice, and fashoionable--so maybe i am seduced by them, as deeper and more neutral then they are, tell me im wrong...

Peaeable Kingdom by Edward Hickman, early american qauker--the thing i didnt notice about this work, before, is the europeans riding in from ships in the top left corner--so the work is basically saying America was a paradise before we came there, we are responsible for a 2nd fall, the presence of white men ruins paradise for the rest of us...ties into the idea that america was eden, literally or symbolically (and by absence refuses to talk about first nations people) (im ignoring the babes playing with the wolves and lambs, as it is part of the illustration from isiah that this work illuminates, of cours, but also because i think that children, infants, are not encorprated as people in Hickman's corpus) (ie europeans not mentioned in isaiah, kids are)

Jessica Simpson's "The Sweetest Sin" is still one of my favourite singles of the decade, though I imagine if anyone heard it and was turned off by it, they'd mostly be turned off by how "mature" it sounds. It's sort of an aching, grand piano-driven, bombastic elegance, a sound that, if it even exists in pop these days, I assume it would exist only in places like Josh Groban (places I assume I probably wouldn't care to visit)--much moreso anyway than in "teen" music. I can't think of a current pop song that less resembles Jessica's sister and Kelly Clarkson and Hilary Duff (or anyway, the little that I've heard by them). Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but I agree with the point about teen-as-AC.

essay and extensive pictures of the Kirkbride asylums, a method of containment in the last 19th century, that was both humane and solved a number of needs for a number of patients--qouting the site:
Dr. Kirkbride envisioned an asylum with a central administration building flanked by two wings comprised of tiered wards. This "linear plan" facilitated a hierarchical segregation of residents according to sex and symptoms of illness. Male patients were housed in one wing, female patients in the other. Each wing was then sub-divided by ward with the more "excited" patients placed on the lower floors, farthest from the central administrative structure, and the better-behaved, more rational patients situated in the upper floors and closer to the administrative center. Ideally, this arrangement would make patients' asylum experience more comfortable and productive by isolating them from other patients with illnesses antagonistic to their own while still allowing fresh air, natural light, and views of the asylum grounds from all sides of each ward.
almost all of the kirkbrides are no longer in use, and in various states of disrepair--instutional buildings (prisons, asylums, hospitals) tend to avoid being saved by heritage foundations, for mostly superstitous reaons, which is a real shame, the pictures have a tragic eerieness...

Manassas "Virginia restricts households to immediate relatives, even when the total is below the occupancy limit". The law is essentially racist, intended to elimanate new immigrants, and Latino/as, who are more likely to live with extended families

Ten Americans, by Ray

10. Richard Cheney
Dick has become the epitome of all that is wrong with America - corporate greed, technocratic power, obsessive secrecy, manifest destiny, public lies, personal betrayals, illicit profit, and a sense of entitlement to all of these. His political lineage goes back to Nixon, he moves in all the right circles, and has become the shadow emperor he has always dreamt of. First on my list of those I'd like to see nailed to the wall.

9. William "Boss" Tweed
Boss begat and perfected the machine that grips America to this day, and made Tammany Hall into the blueprint for the nation. Curse his corrupt and blighted soul, if he ever had one.

8. J. Robert Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer built the bomb in whose shadow we live today, and worse, he knew what he was doing.

7. Henry Ford
Ford found a new way to build things. He built them well enough, and built so many, the rest could do nothing but emulate him. He also hated Jews, and hated unions, and hated anyone who did not subscribe to his particular version of how the world should work, and spread his hate with his methods. Also, Fords suck.

6. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr.
Joe was everything an American is supposed to be: a banker, a politician, a millionare, a moviemaker, a whiskey smuggler, a dynastic figure. He bent and dodged rules, used insider info, sold short, bought and sold and threatened people, and refused to let the inconvenient death of his intended heir stop him from constructing a president.

5. Ulysses S. Grant/Robert E. Lee
The first was direct and brutal, the second elegant and graceful. One almost won the war, the other did. Both fought for the wrong sides. One was a corrupt president, ushering in the era of corporate domination and almost destroying any chance of reconciliation. The other fought entirely on principle, and freed his few slaves upon his death. The two were the snake and mongoose that very nearly made the Civil War a permanent affair. (And perhaps, in some ways, did.)

4. Lyndon B. Johnson/Robert S. McNamara
These two also worked only as a pair, both enslaving themselves to their concept of duty and nearly destroying their country in the process. Johnson fought Hoover and won, fought the segregationists and won, fought the hawks and lost. McNamara fought the old ideas and won, only to realize afterwards that his victory was the more devastating alternative. Both exemplified the American affliction of technocratic power that destroyed what it was supposed to save.

3. Richard Nixon/Henry Kissenger
As with Johnson/McNamara, but subtracting loftier ideals and adding paranoia, secrecy, higher body counts and a fervent belief that the populace must be lied to constantly. Nixon was Shakespearean in his hubris and his conflicts, being a warring Quaker and an untrusting person who wanted to be trusted. Kissenger questions every theology of redemption ever devised.

2. J. Edgar Hoover
Hoover was the most successful spymaster since Francis Walsingham in the court of Elizabeth. He knew everyone and almost everything, and his schemes infected American politics for forty years. He hated himself and everyone else. Still, he made the FBI into something from nothing, and American lawmen into something besides sherriffs. And until Cheney, there was no better example of a shadow ruler. Machiavelli would have smiled, then wept.

1. Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson's fundamental contradiction between man and myth, between who could be free and who should be, between the words that still stir many a heart and Sally Hemmings fucked in a back room is the basis for the schizophrenia of what should have been the greatest nation on earth.
