- Two Banksy Rat Peices, one at 4 times the estimate, one at more then 3 times. an ape peice at a little more then 3. plus two kid peices for 100+ hes clever, but not that clever. (Faile, who i like a little better then Banksy is also pulling those prices, so graff revival)
- Peyton's drawings are better then her watercolours, but the prices dont reflect that
- YBA's are in the middle of their estimates, but they arent going for nothing, at least in london prices seem to be settling. (cf a decent Opie portait and one of Perry's pots)

karl benjamin a la hard edge abstractionist/sort of conceptualist, has been revived by dave hickey (the great thing about him, is how inelegant he is, the forms are awkard, the colours are garish and often clash, the patterns don't quite repeat like they should, but it manages to function as a formal object at teh same time)

Its about the war in iraq, about celebrity culture, about the public, about shock aesthetics, though he is young and american and from brooklyn, it continues a tradition of conservative satirists that england produces so much better then anywhere else. it is more auberon waugh then it is john stewart.
but maybe it isn't satire at all. the Britney Spears sculpture he did, was a genuine, revelatory and erotic ode to the act of creation, and also perhaps how the act of creation can destroy. the pop goddess as kali. it seems prophetic now. the paris hilton sculpture was a monument to the crassness of fame unearned, and watches her downfall with schadenfeude.
& now he comes to the young prince. i think edwards takes old fashioned values like honour and family at face value. he thinks that soilders should fight in wars, and the leaders should be accountable for their actions. the generals who live in the bases should be in the trenches if there were trenches. the war came home, and harry drinks, is this a stiff upper lip or a callus disregard?
i think also of the historicism of the pose. how edward spenser at the funeral of harry's mother made her diana the godess of the hunt, the victim of the hunt, the parrellism of a high class education, and how this one (though made of bronze not stone) looks like the norman grave markers still at new westminster--and how also, she was a matyr to fame, and if he goes over, if he gets killed, then he will also be like that--and how well how that seems to be imporatant to engalnd, vital to see him live or see him die perhaps...

moyra resigned from exposure because of our insensitivity to trans-gendered issues. i dont know if she was wrong, i dont think that we were sensitive enough, but i think the fulcurm issue she wrestled with wasn't the most impt one. donna rose, an impt figure in the american transgendered community resigned from the board of the hrc because they did not push gender onto the recent hate crime leg--and she wrote this about her desecesiopn. because sex/gender is such a liquid, personal, thing--to expect group cohesion, even among people of similar tastes, is difficult, combining dialectics of gender, race. class, and their own intersections with the state is incredibly unstable--even w. a common enemy. rose's letter is a crie d'couer for gays and lesbians to fearlessly examine how they construct gender, and how they absorb the implications of gender into their own private and public prcatices.
these four new prints from edition copenhagen, by ryan mcginness, have a great colour sense, and are much more literal/linear then his earier work, but still ask questions like:
is it graphic design
is it art
what the fuck is the difference.

cara phillips still lives of medical instruments work really well. they are not clinical, but elegant, and not reductive but taxonomic. her photos of medical carts are singular, i havent seen anything like them, and i think that their odd lighting and off composition work against the expectation of the viewer. the problem, by adding clunky titles, obvious portraits, and not knowing when to end (ie dont include the lipo book with the picasso repro in the middle of a tour of surgical instruments, it doesnt work) she completely undermines her skills.
kisok is a store of vernacular finnish design, a little over priced for actually buying anything, but with some really gorgeous things that you might really really want. the best thing though is the quirky, charming and often amusing paragraph long descriptions of the objects
at last a bredder evagenical sex scandal, richard roberts wife likes to dirty text young boys, adn over spend (the problem with her over spending is its so obsessive and pedestrian (a red apaprently she spent 39k for clothes at chico where a jacket goes for $100. i mean if you were going to spend 39k a year for clothes--go to nordstroms.) (the story also mentions that the architecture of oral roberts looks like disneyland's tomorowland)
tony kaye's new doc lake of fire, about abortion, features footage of a termination in a clinical setting, and of one done by a women herself.

pat hobaugh's still lives are delicately and carefully painted, with open light, and carefully crafted details. the attention she pays to surfaces, and the compositon that are not crowded, but have a luxury of sparseness, amuse and delight. knowing that she is dutch, and that she is making fun of the history of dutch still lives, the politeness of dutch ornament, and the reputation that the dutch have for a kind of sexual wantoness, make the paintings even better.

The way the Dylan folkies in the film react to his ‘betrayal’ of the Woody Guthrie–Pete Seeger acoustic tradition reminded me of how you [Haynes] in Velvet Goldmine characterize David Bowie's betrayal of glam and the spirit of Oscar Wilde. He’s an opportunistic hollow man who doesn’t care what his Ziggy Stardust image meant to people — adolescent gays and bisexuals — whom the movement liberated. The Bowie figure is so unsympathetic that in the end he’s even revealed to have had plastic surgery and allied himself with an Orwellian Fascist culture.
So why does Bowie’s shifting persona represent the ultimate sellout and Dylan’s the mark of a pure spirit?

top five visual things i saw in calgary:
1) the glenbow collecting vintage neon, including but not limited to a 30 foot tall rocket, with a pink top and red clouds on the bottom
2) geoffery hunter, everybody knows, at paul kuhn. mishmash of textures and colours, swooping lines, hard scrabble backgrounds, delibrate, and well constructed, without being cautious, including elbow room, with its baby shit brown, lipstick red and fuschia loops, some blackened to dimness, some v. v. bright an folkways studies 3, which is mostly a dusty prussian blue, but with rough ochre gamboling around the lower third of the canvas.
3) Jason de Haan, Where the Ocean Meets This Guy, basement,stride gallery. he has spent the last 3o days building a 20 foot sailboat in this tiny room, the scale envolping and unwelcoming, the white and wwhite like the elephant in the room of modernist thot.
4) red eye, film and video from first nations, art gallery of calgary--dont have the list with me, but includes group of seven inches, with its queer peril of pauline subtext, and watching hockey in northern Ontario, which makes public the frustrations of audience, the breakages and noise (visual/auditory) of brakhage.
5) Marie Lanoo, 3 acrylic monochromes, deep almost digital pools of too pure colour, in the dusk/bruise range, humanised by the inadvertent dust.
worst 4:
1) show upstairs at stride oil on canvases of some womens lab (dog), badly painted, with no sense of humour about her work and earnestly self important
2)dean drevers brass knuckles
3)the cowboy prints in the washroom of the round up center
4)subpar early castings of farfard's horses, just look a mess.
jury still out:
janson nagle, whos early polarid transfers were dark, forboding and deeply in love wiht t oronto at the same time, an almost passive agressive discussion of what it meant ot be urban. his tow new ones, both at newzones, are large, v. large (25 feet diptych for one) of people at a baech, all washed out, but slick, they kind of remind me of a heavily rasterized version of testino's beach scenes, or a sirk movie, but not that busy, and oddly formalized.

hung out wiht some of the old boys tonight, and its weird--they dont view it as negative at all, as positive, and i dont know, if it was wholly negative, or not.
the photos of the hike, of the canoe trip, of town breaks and of homme d noir and the end/beginnings all seem idyllic, young bodies doing what young bodies do best, and i keep wondering if its just works for some people and works not for others--and tolling up the number of inmates, addicts, uni flunkouts, etc that came out of my class, i wonder if its a question of sample size?
i wonder if its easy to blame sjsa on the trauma of my latter lives, my vices becoming the effects of one easy singualr cause, and i wonder how much of my memories have become party fodder, well constructed narratives that contain moral lessons or sweet anecdotes or jokes or something darker.

think of a joke, any joke, and it’s probably got better legs than Prince’s unfunny "joke paintings."

the point of the joke paintings is that they are unfunny on purpose, the hackish, the misogyny, the boredom of play boy "class" is violently taken apart, the visual and analytical desire against nostalgia.
the nadir of desultory Princedom is the "Nurse" series, pages of ads from medical journals soaked in puddles.
the best thing about the nurse paintings, is that it attaches the pulp of flesh to the pulp of text. the work of the nurses, with its choler, its blood, its soaking messes, is made mute by the titles and the white perfection of the uniforms. plus, prince doesn't use medical journals, he uses nurse novels.
(plus the marlboro men are really fucking hott)
