- her vocals are protean, deepening, turning into a flotilla of electronics, thining and thickening, they are occasionally contained by the production, often overwhelmed by the production --but the listener is always aware of the production. this album ends the transition from oops i did it again, with he perfect american bardot breathiness to the harsh, angular and almost atonal toxic.
- this is the first album where she is not credited as a song writer, only as a producer, and much of the album is about the creation and destruction of images--combined with dated ellen van unworth photographs, it suggests the common wisdom, that she is not listening to anyone who can help her, is wrong. the opposite is true here--even with out writing any of the songs at all, she has too many people to listen to. the more people surrounding her, the less control she has. which means the album is an anthology of late post millennial trends in popular music, an inadvertent, already dated time capsule.
- she mentions her self twice or three times a song in the third person, and the first words are this is britney bitch (the only swear in the britney corpus, the only swear in the harry potter novels---btw). all of this third personing does not provide much needed critical distance, it makes her sound dissociative.
- its also an album of paranoia--but the weird thing, is that everyone is looking at her, attacking her, so the paranoia is the wrong word, its more of an accurate example of her life, her chaos, her mental health, etc, but most importantly, her pleasure. addictive personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, its the first album made crazy not by coke or booze but an over dose of fame.
- but the going out is documented, the songs careen wildly, crash into each other, change tempo, vocals, and instrumentation, producers and what is produced. harmonies are dropped, added, mixed in and mixed out, it becomes polyphonic and then singularlly driving in a matter of seconds. it is almost a folk work--like what harold finster would do if he had a capacity for clubbing and a taste for bisexual tail. (which is my round about way of saying, it is intended as an album, a statement, a document that is 60 minutes long, ambitious for someone who's genius came previously in 3 minute bites)

Gyllenhall, Testino, 2007, from his new book. (the image is sleazy enough, and does remind one sort of 70s porn, but it isnt raunchy, not enough hair, or enough fat, and the look on the face is a little too actory, nto nearly enough of the little boy lost he is going for. Testino's attempts at raunch never really go far enough) though the cropping of the photo and the closed eyes sorto f whisper blow me.

mid 70s, anon found porn.
kaelfa senah review in the nytimes of blackout hints at what most critics have sort of been saying about it--that it is good, but that her unique (both authorial and musical) voice is so hidden that the album becomes an act of taste making, selecting producers and curating sounds then creation (not that any of those acts are not creative in/to and unto themselves--but the thing that was so vital about britney, is her autonomy, which maybe she has lost--though talking to david allen a couple of days ago, he pointed out the most interesting thing about the whole thing was that she was expected to make a spirtual and personal come back album to deal with all of the trauma that she has experienced with fame, and she made what is basically an iconic or semi iconic disco work) (ie its the avant garde bitch) (and for further proof, a brilliant cabaret reworking of oops i did it again by max rabbe, cabaret like hollander, weimar era.

the left is all over this but i think tht kirkpatrick under estimates the power of the religious right, and their connection to capital, and the compromises they used to fund power. IN EVENT OF MOON DISASTER:Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.
These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.
They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by the nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.
In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.
In ancient days, men looked at the stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

I imagine the piece to be divided into five parts, not including an introduction and a conclusion. Part one would be a discussion of leather culture in New York in the 70s, its popularity, and the creation of a highly codified, highly ritualized, subculture who’s highly visual signifiers created a simulacra of masculine portrayals. Part two would be how Friedkin, a straight male filmmaker from Los Angeles insinuated himself into that world, and how his portrayal of it worked as a documentary work as much as a work of fiction. Part two would be a discussion of Pacino’s method acting in the film, how he used his body to work towards and against assimilation, how his sexuality becomes an act of great ambiguity, purely from his own corporeal choices. Part four would be a discussion of how the film became loathed among certain queers, and how this loathing was a explicit and political move towards mainstreaming. Also, how this mainstreaming or lack of, was the flashpoint that lead to fights in gay culture about AIDS, bath houses, marriage, and media depictions. I want to talk especially in this section about Victor Russo’s dismissal of the film The Celluloid Closet and Russo’s later biography. Lastly, I want to talk about how leather in 1980 was taboo, but it itself became mainstreamed as an aesthetic fashion, and so the images of sexuality depicted in cruising become less then shocking. Here I want to talk about Mapplethorpe and the culture wars, Foucault’s tours through the bathhouses in the late 80s and Zizek’s essay on fisting. In conclusion, I want to discuss what was lost when both Cruising and cruising (the text and the act) became taboo.

Its not as a good as Yr Man, or to put it more bluntly, Yr Man turns me on, and Firecracker doesn’t.
Maybe its because Yr Man works better formally, the tone of the music literally matches the tone of the music---when he sings put some music soft and low—the music is soft and slow, its seductive in a soulful kind of swagger, but one so smooth that the first impression is one of fidelity, of married couples making love, when it is a song of explicit eroticism with out being ribald, each proposal comes with its own safety catch —“where alone now, you don’t know how long ive wanted to, lock the door and turn the lights down low”, or “lets go over what I had in mind” or “I’ve been thinking of this all day long/never felt a feeling quite this strong” or “aint no body loves me the way I love you” The conversational negotiation of what is desired and what will occur, of the desires of a lover and the commitment of a spouse.
The privacy, the intimacy, the tenderness of the delivery, all suggest that a song made for radio is almost too intimate to be played there. I think it is a song that seduces the audience, a text that manages in a singular fashion to be a song to marry too and a song to fuck too.
This dual working thru of a singular purpose is absent on Firecracker, though its as well written, and it’s extended metaphors work well with in the blues/rockabilly tradition of dirty double entendres, I just don’t believe him---I might believe him if someone else sang it (well its almost too tame now, it might be believable if someone ca 1950 sang it—it would have been perfect for Carl Perkins or Wanda Jackson or Little Richard or Jerry Lee, people who might have done some damage with their voices) Also, Turner is too tame, he of the slow voice, the croon, the basso profundo, who has a certain moral core, cannot bring the fire necessary, yr man requires a smoulder, this requires a flame.
It starts with a yea—it goes fast but not fast enough that the lack of control that the song requires, it doesn’t have the dominance or the fight for dominance that lines like “son of a gun she’s fun to handle, she packs a punch like a roman candle or we might not oughta to roll in the hay because we might burn down the barn one of these days. Plus, by calling her both a firecracker and the light of his life, means he lacks commitment to the impermanence and the sheer destruction of the women in question. (Also if she’s so hot, isn’t burning the barn down a good thing, and isn’t going out in smoke what fire crackers do?) The sheer anxiety of losing control makes a song safe, and a song about arson, and coded references to female orgasm should be anything but safe.
50 years ago, this year Wanda Jackson sang “I’m a fujiyama mama/about to lose my top” and you believed her—that when she finally got what she wanted, cataclysmic destruction would occur. Turner should keep with the ambiguous odes to marital hotel room sex or take lessons from Jackson.

- Really conserative, marketable work, Weston Nudes, early Frank roadtrips, Imogen Cunnigham flowers, all selling for mid 5 to low 6 figures
- Breakfast Room by Evans, for 192, might be the best deal. (though Wessel's portfolio of Suburban Real Estate, 25k for 20, would also count--the only conceptual work in the auction)
- One work broke 1m, Nautulius, gelatin silver print, original printing, not a great photo but iconic (another nautlius, 6 years later, for 250)
- One of the better Avedons, from the Western seires , went unsold
- The one Mapplethorpe, literally classical, unerotic
- Sternfeild also went unsold (the pumpkin one)
- A shitload of Siskind, all for decent or good prices, might make him the American Atget Afterall (10 or 15, b/w 40-70k)
- Well curated, some nice work from Chicago or from Harry Callahan match wel with urban new york work, the black and white fucntion as a unifier w/o being samey
- Adam Fuss, from 1997, looks remarkably liek the expirmental abstractions that were made in the 40s and 50s
- The two Weston's she owned both featured dead bodies
- Two warhol's look out of place with this collection, which explains why they went for so little, a fright wig study for 20k, a polarid of a hadn for 8.
- Best buy, three james welling prints for 3750
