2. As expected Darwin was a 19th century man, enlightened about the possibility of a kind of liberation, but also suspicious of women's progress. Often his language was constructed in the absence of women. (use eks idea of homo-sociality) (also quote louise michelle newman's discussion of darwin as a father to daughters)
   
3. The 19th century struggle for and against a variety of liberations was pragmatically political, and those who were engaged in it used the language of sexual selection for and against their own and other people's liberation (including the tensions b/w the exterior presentaiton of ST race and gender, Havelock Ellis' seeking of normalcy, but advocating for an extension of that desire, and the later eugenic discourses of suffergettes like Stanton (who seemed to throw WOC under the bus); and Emily Murphy (who believed the Eugenic movements arguements)
4. These arguements were disemmiated by populist material culture, expanding them for previously unseen needs.
5. To simplify then Darwin as a member of his time, of his own prejudices, but also of his own searching ambiguity, had his intricate arguements extended against what he might not have believed.
