Tyler Greene of Modern Art Notes asks others to list their top five american buildings, because the AIA list has a flawed methodology and is therefore kind of crazy. since five is way too little, i am making 5 lists of 5: domestic, institatuional, religious, monumental, and transporting. his list is here

Domestic:
Winchester Mystery House, Sarah Winchester
many of the examples that are used, are examples that were made in an auter style, famous architechts working thru their own ego, trying to make something genius instead of functional, i think the winchester house, and other examples of outsider buildings remind us that there are other reasons to build. its also a really great example or working thru of any number of american ideas and issues, the archtype of the haunted house, that work can distract, that creating chaos and confusion leads to a kind of liberation, and that liberation is vital--its almost a mad american literalaztion of benedicts maxim. (also that one person could do all that work for many)

Peir Koenig, Case Study House 21. 1956-1958
The irony, of course, is utopian housing for middle americans becoming idealised housing for the v. rich is well dictated, and there are examples of it in houston and SF that said, every thing in this house, the angles, the lighting, the placement, the furniture, the lighting, whispers: this is new, this is the future, you arent afraid of the future, are you? for something pure, it pops up amongst the decadents w. fair frequency (ie the anniversary party; where the truth lies; that cocktail party shot by julias sherman

The Houses of Memorial Bend,50s and 60s, Houston, William Floyd Norman
There used be a whole web page of these, but it seemed to have died a sad death, Houston was one of the first to extend the possiblities of vernacular modernism, and the post war chic of these is a great example of how local sensiblities could transform a similatry of forms. This is a blog by someone who loves them:here

Vanna Venturi House, Robert Venturi, 1962
I like the radical geometry, the statement on ornament in the 20th Century, the playing with Loos and his children, and i like how the mother liked the house, how she enjoyed living in it, or seemed to enjoy living in it. I love, however, the giant stairway (i always like the basic mechinchals made into visual statements)

This Nantucket Victorian

Institutional
Kirkbride Hospitals
it seems ironic that 120 years after the fact, after the failure of commuinty care, and pysch wards, that the most humane attempt at treating the mentally ill, was this experiment, mostly because of the building, the thinking of how the building worked with people. This one is in buffalo an desinged by William Hobson Richardson in the 1870s later inventor of Richardson Romensque.

Louis Kahn, Center for British Art, New Haven, CT
So Fucking Pretty. (couldnt find a proper pic on line)

Louis Sullivan, National Farmers Bank, Owatoona, Minnesota.

it looks like he forget everything but the top, the balance, and geometrical skills are all there, it is a perfectly formed building, with a seductive ornamental rytyhm, and excellent uses of colour and form, plus glass, etc but also kind of batshit.

Slaters Mill, Pawtucket RI, 1792

i like how agricultural it looks, like a fancy hog barn.

Kresge Auditorium, MIT, 1953 Eero Saarinen

Saarinen reminds me of a time where the future was all curves and glass and pure sunshine. (how do they play sports in this one, wouldnt balls and such breaks the glass?)

religious
Radner Meeting House, 1718

No real difference here, b/w a house and a meeting house, the reductive simplicity, means that people come close, and forget spectacle

Crystal Cathedral Complex (Cathedral--Johnson, Aborteum--Neutra, International Center for Possibility Thinking--Meier)

That they got three of the best american architechts of the 20th century to create this proably says more about capital then anything, and that it is so modern, so outrageously, campily modern, suggets some kind of working out that failed to work, is amusing enough, but it does give you that swirl in the belly, looking up and feelign the awesome nature of god, that said , teh grounds are filled with statues of pure kitsch, mostly b/c the parishoners felt so isoalted by the grounds and b uildings (there has to be something to be said for churches that are desingned not for the parish, but to look good on television)

Shaker Barn, Hancock, Mass.

Circle, because of the infinite, and much larger then the neighbours, because livestock for a community needs more space then livestock for a family, the merging of metaphysical and qautidian tasks, the idea of farm work as a sacred unifying act, is written about commonly in shaker theology, but this makes it clear.

San Diego LDS Temple, Kenneth Moeller, 1988-1993

For something so much directed in the past, it screams past the future, like if the masons who did chartes decided that fighter planes were next (also one of the last lds temples to be created before the stake center area started)

Islamic Center, Dearborn Michigan,2005

Dearborn Michigan has the largest per capita population of muslims in the united states, the population grows larger, as communities gel. This is an icon of post mdoernity then, populatiosn deciding on the tradtions of needs of their communities, and creating instutions that reflect them, regardless of geography, that this was done after 9/11 makes it stronger.

San Pedro Square Rosicrucian Museum, San Jose, CA, 1927

Where Deco interest in Egyptology match 19th century interest in the oblique sciences, hugel well crafted grounds, include theological instutite, library, cafetria, musuem, and planterium, kind of kooky, but geniunely beautiful and not at all outsidery. (think of it as a serious, holy remake of those 20s cinemas or Wrights Mayan house)

side note:
here is the mies chapel for the illinois institute of tech, it amuses me greatly, b/c there are no signifers at all of any purpose of this building, the shadowed bird there is not the holy spirit descending like a dove, it is to prevent birds from flying smack dab into the middle of it.

Monumental:
STatue of Liberty,New York Harbor, Base:Richard Morris Hunt, Sculpture:Frederic Auguste Bartholdi

the great thing, is that the base, adn the concrete island go out of their way to make it seem like a statue that large, in the middle of the harbour is a normal, everyday occurance, they sort of fail, but they do make the work more liveable, and less opressive.

Sleeping Beauty's Castle, Anaheim, Walt Disney, 1955

(Image by Arbus, A Dark Castle in Disneyland, 62)
The central image for the whole park is one that is symbolic of feudalism and of an eternal sleep, and the castle lords over this artifical utopia like some kind of paropticon.

Brooklyn Bridge, Roebling, John Roebling, 1883

O Keefe, 49
Cause it reminds me of a Cathedral to the Machine Age.

Grand Hoover Damn, 1928-1940, Colardo River

mostly, i think, because of how functional it is, how well it does the job of holding that much water in, and how if we didnt have it, we wouldnt have vegas or la or any number of other cities, but also, because of the smooth walls, the wide size, the windows, they made sure that not only functionaly, but aesthtically, it would work.

Vegas Vic, Las Vegas, 1950

Transporting
Union Station, Los Angeles, John and Donald Parkinson, 1939

I have always been impressed at how large they can scale up colonial revival architechture, and i also like how it dovetails nicely into deco

T and P Station, Marshall Texas, 1912

Port of Seattle, Seattle,

Its the Red Colour! (they all look the same, but those container ship cranes are a highlight of new archtiecthual and transportation systems, and seattle intergrates it into the harbour and skyline in a really aesthetic way)

TWA Terminal, Eerio Saarienen, 1956-62

The ventalation grills, starways, resturants, all of the auxilalry stuff, that is added afterwards, is considered as important as the causeways, and the curves swing and fly, in an age of airbuses, and security concerns, the theater of flight as been groudn itno the theater of paranoia, and work this integral cannot be made again, maybe the inability to add secuirty meant that jet blue said no to revising it.

16th and Mission Terminal, BART, SF,
intergrates into the shopping plaza above grond and below ground, scandvian style tile, adn a dramatic roof.

Ricahrd Chai for NY Fashion Week

Wednesday, February 07, 2007

I am a finalist in the Silver Skate, Winter in Edmonton Now competition. So one of my photos will be hung at city for two weeks, from Friday, Feb. 16th to March 2nd. Mine will be the bleak garage in Norwood with the sea foam coloured garage door. Not sure I will win, but it will be there.
Enter the Religious Right with an array of services and support that could no longer be found elsewhere. For struggling families, the support churches offered was an oasis in the desert, everything from home-cooked meals delivered to women and their families after a new child was born to free maternity clothes, baby clothes, and furniture, a supportive community of willing babysitters, women's gatherings during the week, book discussion groups, men's and women's aerobics, food and clothes bank programs, weekly meetings in homes for Bible study and "fellowship," men's basketball and softball teams, choirs, worship orchestras, child and adult musical and drama presentations and "living Christmas tree" projects, grief support, and a host of programs for people of all ages. Best of all? It was all free....This level of support in a society lacking even minimal support for young families can be hard to resist.

dissent wonders wehre the english lefts hatred of isreal intersects w. polite anti semitism. i wonder about this w. the radical french engagement with islam in the 70s, genet in lebanon, foucoult in iraq, after reading said on genet in late works, its not easy, esp since said is remarkably unreflexive in his critique of post colonial writers (reading ferguson in the same place as said is a really interesting juxtoposition, because the lefts position on palestine is a little schizophrenic, in the sense that the radical muslim who pays for and provides a foundation for most of palestines activitys, is not only in favour of the destruction of isreal, but in favour of the destruction of he jews, both in the ancient grudge sense, and in the sense of being the only secualr leftist democracy in the region, and you look at the ultra orthodox realtionship to women, mdoesty, sexuality, authority, god and the state, and aside from the prophet, there is a v. large intersected middle, i think if the left is going to be honest w. itself, its gotta say, fuck palestine, shape up isreal (i dont know how to solve this, i dont know how to protect isreal, respect muslim culture, be a good queer, and a good modernist, how to say huntington is wrong and isreal is wrong and hamas is wrong and hezbollah is wrong and the europeans are wrong and the americans are wrong and jesus is sort of right but in a really moderate non offensive way)

weird article on the parnoid tin hat brigade and the more visonary edges of the pentagons future weapons department

haggard decalres himself completely heterosexual (he was never really gay, and surely not queer, but enjoying being pounded in the ass by a hustler on meth, and pounding yr wife to holy babydom doesnt exactly make you straight, and no matter how you construct it, and declaring anything is under control never really seems to work out) (i dont think we are born gay, and i dont think that we choose to be gay, but i do believe that if you find out that you like the cock, there is no need to deny it, i mean i love meatloaf, i feel no need to say, meatloaf is evil, i will never eat meatloaf again)

Jesus is starting to put me back together. I have spent so much time in repentance, brokenness, hurt and sorrow for the things I’ve done and the negative impact my actions have had on others. That sadness continues as my family and I, along with so many others, go through the painful consequences of my actions. Jesus and his followers, though, have saved my life. As part of New Life’s efforts to help me, they sent Gayle and me to Phoenix for a three-week psychological intensive that gave us three years worth of analysis and treatment. We all wanted to
know why I developed such incongruity in my life. Thankfully, with the tools we gained there, along with the powerful way God has been illuminating His Word and the Holy Spirit has been convicting and healing me, we now have growing understanding which is giving me some hope for a future.

Gayle and I have decided to move from Colorado Springs to go back to school. We love Colorado Springs so much, and will always regard the believers at New Life Church as family, but we have to go in order to let the church determine its own course and for us to retrain. We haven't decided where we are moving but so far have been offered two places, one in Iowa and one in Missouri. We are both planning on getting our masters in Psychology so we can work together serving others the rest of our lives. Since we are taking our classes on-line, we can live anywhere that’s affordable. Then we’ll travel to location for short in-class requirements.

Thank you so much for your love and prayers during this horrific time of transition in our lives. For the last three months, I’ve not been communicative because I’ve been paralyzed by shame. But as God and people like you forgive me, the sun is starting to rise in my life. I look forward to communicating with greater ease.

God bless,

Ted Haggard

“We are Easter People.”

i wrote alot in an essay that will be published in june, about this idea of sexual brokenenss, and the first sentence moves me deeply, because i think "Jesus is starting to put me back together. I have spent so much time in repentance, brokenness, hurt and sorrow for the things I’ve done and the negative impact my actions have had on others.", i think that jesus and i are working on the project together, and i think that my sexuality is one of the least broken things about me, i think that the central message of xianity, that we are broken, that we can be healed, hope for those lost, that central line in amazing grace i once was lost and now am found, or that god is working on me, forever, deeply in a transtional often violent way needs to be spoken of. i think that haggard was broken. it wasnt his desire for male sex though, it was his dishonesty, his damage to his child and his wife, his denial and his seeking in dark corners. i think it must be incredibly difficult to fuck for obligation and fuck for pleasure, and combine those two instincts in one man, that was what broke haggard. i hope to god, literally to god, that his wife and his children will be healed, and he will learn how to fuck men with honesty, nobility, genuineness.

(i also think the church is wrong here, they basically said get the fuck out of town, and dont even think of preaching for christ. i think that haggard had a vocation, and i think that those with vocations cannot give them up with any ease, and i think also that christians are obligated to welcome the broken, those that hurt them, into the sanctuaries. they welcomed the hustler and talked to him, they should welcome haggard)

some thots:

1) syrianna isnt v. good, but i find it intruiging, watching it again last night, the structure has no cohesion, the acting is quiet, the work is underlit, the concentration is on things other then the people, on architechture, on details in stone or rugs on what is behind chairs, on street signs and raquet ball courts. i find the concetration on surface details as signifer of political and personal charachter overdone, and the meandering structure means we have trouble finding one story. but the complexity and refusal towards neatness strikes me as oil works, the spaghetti mess of capital (like those images of the la freeway)
2) matt damon, chris cooper, jeffery wright, tim blake nelson, george clooney are a collection of actors who have refused the method of stainvasky and for it, have decided to disguise themselves, make the work be about how quiet and "natural" they can be, how they evade the cameras in a desire to show that they are above film acting almost, its a neat trick, and i think makes more enjoyable films then actors who decide that near mad ranting is the only way of finding their way thru a script (this is one of the reasons why i want to see the good shepered, b/c it combines the three styles of american film acting that seem dominant right now
a) the suffer for yr craft yell at the heavens work orignated by deniro, etc and perputated by people like sean penn and leo decaprio (as put forth by deniro directing)
b) the fuck me im a star glacial sliding thru scenes, not interacting on a physical level (angelina jolie)
c) the ignore me im an actor digging into scenes, interacting on every level i can find, but not v. loudly (damon)

(i think thats why the depature failed, because the two movies, the one with whalberg/damon/etc fought against the one with nicholson/dicaprio)
(i think maybe damon saying i just want to work, thats all i want to do is work, let me work, which might mean the roles he deserved oscars for, he isnt getting oscars for. (ie in the last 6 years:
departed
syriana
confessions of a dangerous mind
gerry
all the pretty horses)
this american conserative article on the rise of the evangelical left, denies that the idea of a monolithic left or right is no longer on the table for most people, adn a balance of issues is becoming more and more common. which might explain why fewer people are voting. it is a good article from the position of confused ideolouges though.

for example this evangelical baptist church in australia putting up jesus loves osama signs, which might be a xian vs islam thing or a radical desire to forgive thing or something else.

Christopher Wool makes slightly naughty, graphically clean, acts of fairly obvious graphic design, in a way that seems more abstract then it is. The words ae just pop, or just political or just naughty enough to make people think that they are working on a poetic goal, instead of someone who knows how to play the market--i mean black white no surface depth really big, and with a font that is high slumming low, they are intended and succeed in working the market to millions, i dont think his work is any good, and i dont think its worth the millions people pay for it, but that said, they do have a brilliant eye feel, they make me feel pure and modern, and who doesnt want to feel pure:

(plus they punk pogo, pogo+fosse!!)

dike blair paintings are formal and gorgeous and sort of photo realist, or a more painterly, less photographic recontextualiaztion of what photorealism's goals are. his sculptures are great installations of commonly found materials, and concenr themselves with figinuring out how to use space, how to mannifest amongst the horizontal and the vertical, at the same tiem, the colours are gorgeous, the forms are immersive, the found elements are clver, and i am sort of impressed. (think of it as a glammed up, high gloss remake of noland) (most of them feature electronic elements, so cords are kind of relavent, and so its really interesting how he keeps them out in the open, snaking among the other elements, to tie the spaces together, and a material fetish for uncloseting how to...like look how he uses that saftey orange w. the blue here:
