Film crit for me is about usefunction, in case of writing about it, or seeing a movie, so i go to reference books, and the odd website, when i am looking for info, i do not go to crit for crit's sake. that said: a) the bfi seires of small volumes; nathan lee esp. in film comment, and the two big dave thomas books.

Death Proof. Explotation films often hate women and fags, vanishing point is an awfully, violently homophobic text. So we get three women to replay it, to fuck with it, to seek revenge for all of those women who were beloved and destroyed in previous films--and then you o it in a way that is both really exciting (the car chase on the suburban highway), intergrates a wide variety of low trash, and is formally innovative. that it tells it's tales via absences is interesting.

Kramer vs Kramer has the only performance by Streep I like, and i think that her self actualization and her isolation from childhood is radically unsympathetic.
