Saatchi put Snow up in a Piccadilly hotel along with his friend and fellow New York artist Dan Colen. The pair decided to make a "hamster nest" within their hotel room – shredding phone books, blankets and curtains for "bedding" in which to curl up and take a cocktail of drugs. The experiment ended with them evacuating the hotel room in the middle of the night to escape arrest. Typical of Snow's infusion of his excess into his art, he then set up the NEST installation with Colen at Deitch Projects in New York, where two thousand phone books were destroyed over five nights.

i think that the first hamster nest, the private one, wiht it's desperation, and its sadness, and its obsessive seeking of comfort, of creation and destruction, is not new, and it deft. is druggy in a really obvious way, but there is something moving in it's desperation--the conversion of a private and intimate act into spectacle, from two phonebooks to two thousand, from a hotel room to a gallery, is a nice metyonomy for the LES from the mid 80s to the present's tedency to make public that which perhaps should be kept private, and that this dichtomoy b/w different kinds of intimacy was funded by the same guy who payed for Sarah Lucas or Tracey Emin, suggests an intertextuality that Saachi must have been aware of.
