but it was at the chapel at the illinois instuite of technology
and the building itself started extremely pure
with huge windows and expanses of marble and empty rooms 40 feet by 40 feet, and maple panelling
just intensely absent
but in the last 40 years,
both the chapel and the other buildings on the campus
filled up
with computers, and furniture, and art, and people
and signage, and unofficial material
and the same thing is with the chapel
the chapel began as singular and absent
with just this sqaure room
and a communion rail and a big cross
and a travertine altar
but it filled up
with cheap chairs, and card tables, and hymn books and a piano
and i sat in the chapel and thought that this was metaphor
i was moved almost to tears
but im not sure that the metaphor was about

you have mastered the greys, the images are sombre and elegaic, your empty or near-empty public spaces convey a great sense of solitude.
