francois alys found a copy of a lost portrait of St Fabiola. he saw other copies, over the last decade, in Germany, Spain, Paris, Belgium, Argentina, and London. he kept painting them, over and over again, for a decade. The paintings, now at the hispanic society of new york have much to say about cultural memory--one can lose the original,but copies extend the verbal and visual memory of an object maybe forever, the lost/found of historical searching is made clear here. i find the effort holy.
