as a man thinketh a seires of paintings by andrew brandou, about jim jones, are unsettling, combining lo fi aesthetics, mexican graphics, golden books style illustration styles, and funny animal comics into a narrative about jim jones. it seems an obvious way of presenting the narrative, but it really seems to be an updating, of the instincts of people like hicks, imn a deeply critical, cynical way, saying that the formal/aesthetic choices of american outsider faiths lead to disaster as much as the theological choices.

Peter Hugo photographs hyena man, a collection of native healers,showmen, and mystics, in lagos. they also train and maintain snakes, monkeys and hyenas. the site includes an essay about their role in nigerian culture and an artist statement by the photog. i try realy hard not to exoticise other cultures, but having a whole group of people who regularly walk hyenas on leashes seems pretty exotic to me.

My mom still wants an alpaca. Or, rather, two of them. Even though it appears as though most people get alpacas so they can shear their wool and sell it, and that's in violation of what what our neighborhood's (loose) association has stated can go as far as residental properties go. Sourpusses.
It's too bad that some architects don't believe in designs that work on a real life basis. I'm sure that the great majority of them are aware of what needs to be done to make their designs feasable and strike that delicate balance between form and functionality.
Those wedding photos are insane! I love them.
And unfortunately a lot of people who get involved with payday loans do live within reasonable distance of banks. (Here in S.A., banks aren't averse to going into poorer neighborhoods so long as they're in high traffic locales; e.g. I've seen a Citibank in the deep West side.) Unfortunately, what gets a lot of people into these payday loans is the simple fact that they find themselves suddenly in the middle of the week with an emergency of some kind and no sufficient funds to pay for it. So they get into a payday loan, and from that moment get trapped in an endless cycle to pay off that one payday loan.
I think it would be reasonable for the feds to put a cap on the total amount of interest any group doing lending or involved in credit/financing would be able to charge, something like 50%, which is a lot more workable than the approx 200% the payday loan companies charge. And it would easily satisfy all of the reputable people. (Even some of the dodgier credit card companies in the early 2000s wouldn't charge more than 25% interest, which sounds insane before you compare it to those payday loan people.)
