the assumption that "supressing active political thought" (in the words of the editor of harpers) is done through the apathy of the viewers is wrong headed, the low voting rates and the lack of discourse is an indication of a corrupt and fatous system that is no longer working for its citizens.

he does talk however, about an accidental conspiracy that wants to remain in power, and talks about the lack of populist voice and sites of resistence (zines, the web, blogs, college papers, universities, and general global communication that has been democratized needs to be acknoweldeged as a way to get this power, but will not by lapham, because he is traditonally in the media.
