Evel Keinevel jumps oevr some shit.

Tom Papagordge long lost essay interacting Robert Frank's The Americans, with Walker Evans American Photographs. He makes an argument that Franks book is an explicit counterpoint to Evans, that he shot for shot interpreted and reconstructed the narratives of Evans 35 years earlier, and Frank admits this. I knew that Frank connected himself closely to Evans, but it ws interesting to see how the two texts interlaced.

the American assoc. of civil engineers has a critical infrastructure blog, and the entries are chilling.

172 minute 1972 documentary on the Manson family, from American Pictures International. The doc won the Oscar, but the most interesting thing about it, is that the whole thing has a psychedelic aesthetic, with odd splits, coloured lenses, and other camera tricks, look at the kaleidescope lens segment with the three men, two women and a horse, it looks like ken kesey directing equus. (the matching of manson's aesthetic and the film producers aesthetic, leads to some really interesting questions about the connections b/w politics and form)

I like this one better, for its scaling, its almost imperial grandeur, its sly wit, and its refusal to engage in the usual wall writers ideas of property and public/private space.

Mitt Romney talks about the church, b/w the commercials on an Iowa radio show. one of the more interesting deferences of his faith, well thot out and explicit. it will lose him the election, just as gulliani's new york lifestyle will lose him his. more on romney here

vladimir zrimaov's woodcut illustrations of gogol are sufficiently Russian and bleak.

I have posted this before, but its getting some mileage, b/c of the Flavin LACMA show, so here it is again.
monument 4 for those who have been killed in ambush (to P.K. who reminded me about death), 1966
(the permanences of the idea of monument and the ephemeral nature of the material, being in the corner of a room, like a shock, like an ambush, the four bulbs, simple and explicit one-one connection and the almost religious literalness of the red, undermined by the conversational parentheses, and the initials, its clarity becomes inscrutable at that point)(i think that tension, and the cold, technocratic machine feel of the work as well, makes it so profoundly against not only vietnam but how we conduct war post-dresden)

iraqs power grid is beyond fucked, for a variety of reasons, some not the americans fault.

gorgeous hand drawn graphic design, with an excellent website.

Jerome Lebling, South Saint Paul, 1962. From his book on Minnesota.

more info on the thesis that Neanderthal breed into homo sapiens, and did not make themselves extinct, i've always been fond of this theory, so its good to know the physical evidence is encouraging it.

WeeGee, Infrared Photo of Lovers on Long Island Beach (similar to the infrared work he did at movie theaters)

waissa has applied to be part of the exposure photo show, and i don't want to get into any trouble, but it would be an honour if we had him, his work combines interests in vintage technique and the difficult v
varragicies of isreali history, into gorgeous and haunting (important) work. (esp. his polaroid transfers, which decay and fall apart into abstract landscapes, like the lacunae of people, of memory has phyiscally imprinted itself onto the text, like words on the body.

22 photos of Chicano murals, from orange county, in disheartening states of disrepair, peeling in the california heat. these works of history, art, and racial conciousness should be perserved as landmarks.

stephanie dearmond's cermaic textual peices are femmey, and kind of sweet, in an interestingly crafted way.

pfizer has released the first anti-hiv drugs in years, spec. for people with drug restient infections. looks like good news.

Glen Murphy rising star in the young republican, likes mansex, resigns (he's also basically a rapist, which is why he should resign)

New PJ Harvey, live at Copenhagen. Much less out there and angry then her earlier work, but the unique voice and vocalizations.

imagine if that catholic heart of christ thing looked like a muppet and happened to a sad indie boy in love, you have the gist of the video here. the song is awful.
