top five reasons
1) the formal, ritualised posing--how there are spec. rules that come with the different animals--indicating status.
2) the costuming, emerging from a contradictory fuctionalism (ie the other hunters cant shoot us so we should wear clothing thats really bright, the animals cant find us we must wear camafaluge.) it reminds me of the tension of the dress/battle uniform of soilders.
3) how in hunting pictures (not sport--hunting!) from the neolitihic onward, have shockingly similar poses, etc.
4) what it means to pose wtih dead animals. in the sense that those who hunt for food do not photograph like those who hunt for trophy--but i bet money that everything but the boar and the wolf of these photos, is v. much used for meat.
5) there is a homosocial nostaliga of a world w/o women, in these magazines--which might explain why it is so liked by the conserative power of our country.
