I was reading somewhere last week (it might have been the g and m) that High Modernism was a snobbish reaction to popular literacy, found in the broadsheets and educationary social reforms of the mid to late 19th century. While this may have been true, Wyndham Lewis's anthology The Stuffed Owl, that collects the worst poetry of that time, proves that even if the works "instruct and delight", doesnt make them any good. (new edition released, article on it here )
