Durer, Abuduction of Proserpine on a Unicorn, 1516, ETching

I like it, because the unicorn is angry and viscious and ray like. found in the musuem of fine arts, boston, catalog for Durer:Master Printmake. the book has two versions by durer, on different paper (you cant tell the difference in repro) and a version by the wonderfully named Hieronymus Hopfer (which i like better, because its cruder, and more manic, the paper size is smaller, the horse is turning in the other direction, and the scene is more concentreated centrally, so the picture looks that much scarier) and much detail of early 16th century etching techniques, and general formalist concern, but little about why this was printed, how it sold, what the story was, etc, which is frustrating.

(does anyone know a good social history of the market in 16-17th century prints, who bought them, who sold them, who shipped them, and any ideas of intellectual property et. al?)

looking thru the ctalog is oddly outsider, b/c of all the varation, the insane details, and the ocd level line work, its so precise, and so delibrate, i mean it fills a page like tintoretto or carraci, but its too clean and precise, and almost colourless...might be t he difference b/w the right and left.

(h hopfer was the son of daniel hopfer, also a print maker, from what i can google, his entire career seems to be ripping off durer.

i also want to know if there was an angry unicorn meme?
