one of the best things about flickr, is that collected, almost random ephemera, can be easily adni mmediately seen by millions, and sorted electronically, with much ease. This collection of 19th Century Shipping Labels is a perfect example. the sheer level of detail, in the drawings, the fonts, the over packed concentration of competing visual signals really talks about what the continued modernist history of stripping ornament was about. (from Loos to Helevetica), and also, how the reclaiming of this kind of aesthetic in the 70s, ignored the wonderful use of colour, esp, the blues and greens.
